Chapter Nineteen
I Don't Regret, Part Two
Boedog came back to me in one piece, although the welcoming he got wasn't what I had had in mind. Throwing myself at him as soon as I saw him to try and get out of stapling a young girl together definitely wasn't what I had in mind. Before that whole mess happened Otic threw me over her shoulder as soon as she got a communiqué from her brother and we headed out on her fastest ship, medical supplies in tow. Apparently Thaiden had met up with the ship Tox and Boedog were on and there was some trouble, enough trouble that I had to bring the whole supply of blood I had been storing for emergencies. Before Otic told me about the human I was wondering why she wanted me to take my type 'O' blood. After she mentioned the girl she was the second most important thought in my head, the first being Boedog.
Everything went by in a complete blur, even as Otic brought in the limp and bleeding mess of a human girl. After that whole fiasco with the staple gun my brain shut down and tried to block out everything, the blood, the smells, the feeling of slick hands trying to staple flesh together…I was definitely in shock from the gruesome scene and even threw up when Tox showed me her mutilated nose.
Putting those thoughts aside I buried myself in Boedog as much as I could on the ride back and again when we settled back in on the planet. I was ecstatic that he was alive and mostly well, along with Tox. Boedog did have a few cuts and bruises from his latest hunt but he was none the worse for wear. He was distant, though, and I attributed that to shock after what Tox and Thaiden had told me. It all sounded very traumatizing and I sympathized with him.
Patiently I waited for him to come around, and he did, eventually. It only took him a few days, coming out of his funk much sooner than I expected. Once he did everything returned to normal. Well, as normal as it could have been.
The girl Thaiden brought back, Jasmin was her name, was in a very sorry state and needed to be monitored constantly. Tox took on the responsibility of taking care of her but I still visited when the others slept during my awake time.
"I wish you had come here under better circumstances," I told her while tucking a light blanket over and under her feet. "It would have been a lot more pleasant and no one would have tried to kill you," I continued with a smile. Talking to her made me feel normal again, like I was back home visiting a friend in a hospital.
But, I didn't know her. Thaiden and Tox had told me everything they knew about her when they felt well enough to and she already amazed me. She was tough and merciless. Her dedication to keeping Thaiden safe spoke volumes about her. I was looking forward to meeting her when she was awake but until that time came I just talked to her.
"After a while I stopped regretting getting taken on this joy ride," I said spreading my arms wide. "I didn't know what I was going to do after college. I had no plan, no real ideas, just a few half hearted thoughts. I didn't even have a job in mind." Slowly I leaned against the edge of her bed making sure not to disturb her too much.
"At least you brought back my mate with you-" I paused suddenly catching myself. I had just called Boedog my 'mate', something I had never done before out loud.
A loud sigh escaped me as I covered my eyes then looked at the ceiling.
"I've been with him for seven years. Seven years," I explained to my silent audience, "and I still can't admit that I love him," I finished gently. "I don't know if I will ever be able to tell him."
I turned around and leaned over the bed looking at Jasmin's relaxed face. She looked at piece, even with her nose covered in a bulky sponge.
"One thing I can admit, though, is that things are going to be very, very different when you wake up."
