Chapter Nineteen A week had passed and Madison had only managed to get Tyler to bring her to his family home in order to browse the Simms’ library for old books. His mother was very sweet, and his father was away from home at the time, but Madison had not found anything old that belonged to the Popes. Tyler looked entertained at her interest in the books since Madison wasn’t normally much of a bookworm. He tried to distract her after awhile, due to his own boredom, with suggestive comments and caresses. Sarah had been able to search Caleb’s home last weekend. Caleb had even took her to the old caretaker’s house where there were even more books. And though she had returned to the dorms with a stack of old spell books, she had been unable to find anything belonging to the Popes as well. Only a week and a half left until winter break, Madison worried as she sat in her English Literature class, biting on the eraser end of her pencil. What if she never found the Pope family Bible? The bell rang and she rushed out into the hallway, almost bumping into Sarah who was looking for her. “Madi! Come on,” Sarah said, pulling Madison away from the passing crowds and just outside on the porch. It was a bitter cold morning and both girls shivered. “What is it?” Sarah smiled. “I think I may have found something.” “What?” “In one of Elizabeth’s journals, she wrote of ‘preparing the ropes’. It was a task she couldn’t do herself. Apparently she had a servant, Oscar, who had to ‘fetch the herb from the ship in order to prepare the ropes’.” “And?” “I think she was talking about the ropes they used to bind the warlock. They did something with the ropes and a herb. So… I started looking for anything concerning a herb that might having power-dampening ability.” “What did you find?” Madi asked. The bell rang. “Shit. O.K. I think it’s an herb called Rue, otherwise known as Witches’ Bane. People use to use it to ward off witches.” The girls walked back into the building, knowing they were going to be a few minutes tardy to their next classes. “Can you order some online?” Madison asked. “I would do it… but…” “Yeah, I understand,” Sarah nodded. “I’ll take care of it. And I think we should get some rope made of hemp, like they would have had in those days.” “I’ll order the ropes,” Madison agreed. “Think Caleb would let you test them out on him?” she laughed. OOOOOOO That evening, after dinner, Madison’s father called. She had been walking back to her room with Tyler when her cell phone went off. “Hi, Dad.” Hi, Sweetie. Looks like your friend, Reid, was a man of his word. I just received a job offer from a bank in Ipswich. It pays almost twice as much as I get now. “Really? Oh my God! That’s great, Dad!” Madison exclaimed, smiling at Tyler’s puzzled face. “When can you move here?” I was thinking of coming up on Saturday to look for a place to rent - since Marish House won’t be ready yet. “That would be great!” Madison chirped. She felt so relieved that her father would be in Ipswich - under Caleb’s protection. Now there would only be the matter of keeping Raina and Ben safe somehow. “I can help you look. And you can meet the rest of my friends.” She squeezed Tyler’s hand. Sounds good, sweetheart. I’ll call you Friday night and we’ll make a plan. “O.K., Dad. I’m so happy for you. Congratulations.” After she hung up, she told Tyler the good news and asked him if he could take her to Nicky’s where Reid was. “I want to thank him,” she added. “I suppose I won’t to see you ‘thanking him’, will I?” Tyler asked ruefully. “If you’re going to get all jealous on me, then, no, you don’t want to see it. But there was a time you didn’t mind sharing…” “Oh, I minded, I just didn’t say anything because I didn’t want to be an asshole.” “Tyler…,” she laughed, hugging him. “I’m too happy right now. You know I love you, don’t you?” “Yes.” “And I’m introducing you to my father on Saturday - as my boyfriend.” Tyler smiled, feeling a bit better. “All right, I’ll take you to Nicky’s.” OOOOOO Reid Garwin was deeply engaged in his pool game, letting the other person think he was winning. He was saving his skill for his end game. It was a common strategy, but still people fell for it time and again. He was about to miss a shot on purpose, when he glanced up and noticed Madison striding across Nicky’s straight for him with a huge grin on her face. Something was up. He stood straight and waited, watching her as she rounded the table and leapt onto him, wrapping her legs around him and making him step backwards to maintain his balance. She kissed him fully on the lips, causing cat calls of approval from the other guys in the vicinity. When she stopped kissing him, she said, “You are the absolute best! I love you so much!” And then proceeded to kiss him again. “Hey, isn’t that Tyler’s girl?” They stopped kissing and Reid put her down on the floor again. He looked at the guy who asked and said, “No, man, it’s her twin sister.” Everyone laughed, making Madison blush. Reid turned to his opponent and said, “I forfeit. Got more important things to do.” “Obviously,” the man replied, scooping up the bet money. Reid took Madison’s hand and led her outside into the parking lot. “What’s this all about?” “You,” Madison smiled, excitedly, wrapping her arms about his neck. “You got my Dad a job in Ipswich.” “My motive was completely selfish, Madi. I didn’t want you to have to go to Boston all the time. I had no idea it would make you so happy.” “Well, it does make me happy - very happy. This is the best Christmas present you could ever give me.” “What a daddy’s girl you are,” Reid laughed. “But I’m happy you feel so beholden to me. However shall you repay me?” Madison smiled sexily, “Any way you wish. But I don’t want to go back to the dorms. I’ve never been to your house before…” “So you want to besmirch the saintly image I have with my parents, by having sex under their roof?” “Saintly image? How many phone calls do they receive from Spenser regarding your saintly image?” “Good point. My reputation is trashed. Let’s go. I’ll even fuck you in the family library, since I know you’ll want to check that out while you’re there.” Madison looked at him in surprise. That was one of the reasons she wanted to go to Reid’s home, but she wasn’t aware he knew of her recent interest in the old books. “Oh, yes, I know,” he added, when she looked surprised. “I notice everything, Madison. Only thing I’m still working out is why.” Madison felt a little exposed. “Like I told Tyler, I just want to find ways to defend ourselves from Chase.” Reid nodded. “I understand that. But what is the urgency?” “Pogue’s birthday is next month, isn’t it?” Reid shrugged. “Yeah, guess so. Don’t worry so much, Madi. He won’t catch us off guard this time. Let’s go.” OOOOOO She met Reid’s parents, who were very kind to her, though her father greeted her from across a room, looking wary. “I’m sorry, my dear,” he said. “It’s best I keep my distance.” Madison remembered that Mr. Garwin was also a warlock. But the thought of doing anything intimate with men her father’s age was a real turn off, not to mention the weirdness of the father-son thing. She hoped her presence wasn’t causing him too much suffering. He did give them permission to look through any of his books and even had a servant bring in some more from various rooms in the house. As soon as the door of the Garwin library were closed, and locked, Madison turned and jumped on Reid, knocking him over onto a large, leather sofa. He laughed as they tumbled back, holding her against him. “You know… I’ve never brought a girl home before,” he told her. “Seriously?” “Yeah. My father use to tell me that I can only bring the ‘keepers’ home.” “The keepers?” “The one’s I’m serious about. So far, that hasn’t happened.” “I’m here, though.” “You’re a keeper. You are always going to be in my life, Madi.” “Hmmm… but I probably wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t who I am.” Reid shifted them so that she was on the bottom and he was pinning her down from the top. “Shut up, witch. I’m the one who wouldn’t be here for long if you weren’t who you are. I couldn’t stop using like my dad did. It’s too much fun.” Things became very heated as they kissed and explored each other with hands and mouths, discarding their clothing within minutes. Happily no one disturbed them as they made love for over an hour, though Madison was very conscious about not making too much noise out of respect for Reid’s parents. After they were well sated, Madison made her way to the stacks of books, skimming over the titles. Nothing looked remarkably old. Reid walked up behind her, wrapping his arms about her from behind and kissing her shoulder. “What, exactly, are you looking for?” “Really old books,” she replied. “Anything that might have been in possession of the original families.” “That stuff is hard to read. Most are written in a type of Old English.” Madi turned her face to look at him. “You’ve seen them? Where?” “Not here, that’s for sure. Most of the old stuff is in the crypt. The crypt is the best place because of all the protection wards on it.” She turned in his arms. “Can we go there? I want to see them.” “Tonight? It’s getting late, Madi. We’ve got class tomorrow.” “After school then?” “Sure, babe, anything you want.” OOOOOOO Tyler came along with Reid and Madison to the crypt the next day, looking for books long forgotten. Some were so old that Madi feared they’d fall apart if she touched them. The boys, however, gently levitated the volumes down for her to look through and Madison sneezed as the undusted tomes floated down. Reid had been right. So many were in Old English. Madison had to really concentrate on each one, trying to wrap the strange wording around her tongue. “So, why exactly do you need something from the original families?” Reid asked. “Actually, one family in particular - the Popes,” she replied. She knew what the next question would be and she had already prepared an answer a day ago. Her explanations had to be believable as possible. “Why?” “For a spell on Chase’s bloodline,” Madison replied. “Got to have something of the Popes for it to work.” “Would be easier just to find something that belonged to Chase himself,” Tyler mumbled. “Why does it have to be a book?” Madison opened a cover of an old book and pointed at some writing. “Look, people use to write in the cover of their books all the time. Sometimes it would be to show ownership, or to record events. Sometimes it would be notes or a few words to someone they were giving the book to. Something that old would cover Chase’s whole bloodline going back all those generations - including the father who willed him his powers.” Madison hoped her story sounded plausible. She made sure not to look directly at the boys as she spoke her lies by keeping her eyes down at the books she was browsing. It seemed she was successful as they asked her no more questions. She hated lying to them, but it was for their own safety - and her father’s safety too. She would need this book, if all of her other plans failed. It could prove a useful bargaining tool. They had finished looking through all the shelves on the walls and Madison wanted to cry. She had really thought the best chance of finding the Pope family Bible would be here. She plopped down on a chair, sighing with disappointment. “I’ll never find it,” she despaired. Tyler stood beside her, putting a hand of comfort on her shoulder. “It’s o.k., Madi. We’ll find some other spells to use against Chase. You really have me thinking that we should brush up on all this stuff. I guess our powers have always been enough for us. But they’re not when we are going up against someone who has learned the old spells.” Madison put her face into her hands. There was only Pogue’s house left to search, and then what? This was beginning to seem impossible. “Come on, baby,” Tyler said, caressing her back, “don’t be sad. Let’s get out of here and go to dinner, maybe catch a movie. You need to get your mind off of this stuff for now.” Madison nodded and slowly stood, feeling wiped out. The three of them began to make their way to the stairs that led out of the crypt when Reid said, “What about the inner sanctum?” Tyler stopped in his tracks, frowning at Reid. “You know Caleb said we should never go down there. The tunnels have been collapsing for decades. It’s too dangerous. We‘ll find other spells.” “No, wait,” Madison piped in. “I want to see it. Please, Tyler, lets go there. We’ll be careful not to touch the walls.” “Madi, we are not risking your life for a fucking book,” Tyler stated. Madison glared at him, then turned to Reid. “You’ll go with me, won’t you? I know you will.” Reid shook his head. “Tyler’s right. We won’t risk you. I’ll go myself.” “That’s fucking stupid, Reid, don’t be an idiot,” Tyler snapped. “Have you even looked down those tunnels? You’ll have to move stuff out of your way in order to pass and you might just loosen up the ceiling doing that, then BAM, you’re dead.” “O.K., I didn’t know it was that dangerous. Forget it. I don’t want to risk you either,” Madison said. Reid came before her and looked her straight in the eyes. “How important is this book to you, Madi?” It was the hesitation in her answer that told Reid it was very important, even though she finally said, “You are more important.” He smiled, mischievously. “I’m going. Besides, I always wanted to check it out, but over-protective Caleb would always stop me.” “Damn it, Reid,” Tyler swore, frustrated. “Fuck!” He felt tied between wanting to call Caleb to stop Reid and wanting to help Madison get her book. “Fine! But I’m going to watch your back. If things start to fall, I’ll do my best to keep them from hitting you.” “Keep them from hitting us, Baby Boy,” Reid said, slapping him on the back. Tyler rolled his eyes as he made his way toward an old door with a bar across it. They removed the bar with their powers and unlocked it the same way. “Madi, wait here,” Tyler ordered, more serious than she had ever seen him. “Do NOT follow us. I promise, if we find some books, we will bring them all back to you. Just stay here, all right?” “I got it,” she frowned. “Please be careful, you two. If it starts getting too dicey in there, just come right back.” The two boys grabbed some lit candles for light and began to enter the passage. “I can’t believe we doing this crazy shit,” she heard Tyler grump. Madison paced back and forth inside the crypt, startling at every sound, hoping she wouldn’t hear a cave-in. She began to feel more regretful of letting them go down there as every minute passed. Finally she had to sit down, her head in her hands. If anything happened to them, she’d never forgive herself. She thought for a moment that Caleb might show up, sensing the use of their powers and wondering what they were up to. He would be so pissed off if he knew those two were risking their lives for a book. But then Madison remembered that the crypt was protected from anyone sensing power, which was one of the reasons Chase had never found out about the place. It seemed forty nerve-wracking minutes had passed before Madison finally broke down and wept. What had she done? Why didn’t she stop them? Oh, God, Reid and Tyler… She would stop sobbing and then begin pacing again, repeating the pattern over and over. How much time had passed? She took out her cell phone and looked at the time. It had been over an hour! Should she try calling them? Or, what if she did call them and they were distracted from something and then got killed? She paced, undecided. What to do… What to do… Finally, she couldn’t stand it any longer and pressed Tyler’s number. The phone began ringing, but he wasn’t answering. “Come on, answer…” “I would, except my hands are full of books,” a voice sounded from behind her. She whirled around, seeing two very dusty warlocks, each holding a stack of books in the entrance of the passages. “Oh my God!” she exclaimed, running and slinging an arm around both their necks, pulling them both in for awkward hugs. “You’re safe! I was so worried.” “Yeah, it was longer than we thought and tight in some places, but we survived,” Tyler said. “My heroes,” she teased, kissing their cheeks. “Thank you so much.” They set the books down on the altar table and Madison looked them over after spreading them out. These were by far the oldest books she had seen and some looked to contain positively evil drawings. But, after all that trouble, she did not see a Bible. Her disappointment must have shown, though she really didn’t want to seem ungrateful after all the boys had went through for her. She was thinking of what she could say to them when she noticed Reid giving Tyler a conspiratorial glance. “Oh, Madi, I almost forgot,” Reid said, smirking. “There is one more.” He walked to the doorway of the passage and bent down. “It must have fallen from the top of the stack.” Madi’s heart sped up in excitement when she saw the words “Holy Bible” stamped into the old leather-bound volume in Old English. “You are so bad for teasing me,” she scolded, but she was too hopeful to be angry. She opened the front cover and saw the word POPE written at the top of the inside page and below it two columns for births and deaths, each name with dates next to them. They had found it. Her father and friends would be safe. Madi couldn’t help weeping with relief. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
