Chapter Nineteen - A Blue Door
Will was about to knock again when the door opened beneath his fist.
“You are needing the surgeon then…” he stopped
suddenly it was not Jack in the doorway, it was Bella and she looked very
different from the last time that he had seen her. Her eyes were very bright
and her face slightly flushed, her hair was piled on her head curls escaping
down the side of her neck, he had a sudden urge to touch one of the wayward
locks and clenched his hand to his side. He looked down and wished that he
hadn’t, Jack would kill him if he seen that glance, the dress that Bella wore
was tight, low cut and clung like a second skin.
Bella looked where he had been looking and blushed, she had left her length of
silk with her boots when she had got up to open the door, she crossed her arms
which only accentuated rather than concealed and glared at him.
“Bella” his lips twitched “you are looking rather different from the last time
I saw you.”
She scowled and her eyes flashed “I am Flora, Mr Turner.”
“Ahhh a disguise, I see that you have dressed the part as well, very clever, no
one will be looking at your face.”
Bella snarled and Will smiled, then winked at her; she
gaped at him, fighting to control the flush that she could feel rising on her
face. She gave herself a mental shake and clenched her fists telling herself
that she would like to wipe the grin off his face.
“Bella you left your cover up thing on the floor” Jack called out “Turner don’t
you be looking at Bella’s disguise, she is my sister mate and I would hate to
have to take steps.”
Bella looked at Will “thank you Jack” her voice was very sweet as she narrowed
her eyes “keep your eyes aloft mate.” Her fingers flexed slightly moving
towards her waist, no knife was on her belt but it was obvious that she usually
carried one.
“Come and have some rum William” Jack called out “we were just discussing my
forthcoming visit with Angus”.
*
Jack made his meandering way through the streets of Tortuga, pausing here and
there to admire some trinket in the market, admiring how the jewel looked in
the stall holder’s mirror, smiling at his reflection while his eyes flickered
behind, checking if he was being followed. Content that he was not being
watched he wandered a little more, stopping to chat with people that he had
known all his life, old friends of his mother’s, wrinkled faces creasing in
smiles when he stopped and kissed them, first one cheek then the other.
Charming with honeyed words, so that they giggled like young girls before
swatting his bottom and telling him that he was still a naughty boy.
At last he came to a long low stone building with a brightly painted sign, a
creature of legend painted in yellow so bright that it dazzled the eye. The Golden
Dragon, from within he could hear low voices and the sound of wheezing
bagpipes. He pushed open the door and the pipes made a loud braying noise, as
if the player had gasped in surprise at the man who stood in the doorway. Well
it was not Jack’s usual haunt that was certain but it was only because he chose
not to socialise here, it was a trifle staid for Jack, he preferred the
excitement in some of the more earthy taverns. The dozen or so Captains that
sat around the room looked at him, some faces registered surprise, others mild
amusement, and several frank curiosity but they all nodded in response as he
raised his hat.
McGuiness was seated at a table in the far corner, tucked back in the shadows
he did not get up as Jack walked over just watched him, not speaking until Jack
stood in front of him.
“Jack Sparrow” he nodded at a chair “I am curious as to what could be so
important to warrant the charade I went through to meet you.”
“You followed the instructions that William bought then…I was not sure if you
would” Jack hesitated “some people think I am half crazy you know, or a bit too
fond of the bottle.”
“Aye some do” McGuiness looked at Jack long and hard “I knew your father
laddie, some said he was mad but not Angus McGuiness. So what is so urgent
son?”
Jack took a breath, he had thought of a hundred ways to do this but now that he
was here all the rehearsed phrases had vanished from his head, he remembered Angus and his father together now. Two big men
sitting talking in that room just off the kitchen, the one his mother liked to
call the parlour, they had argued and laughed, then often argued some more. How
could he have forgotten something like that?
“It’s about my sister Angus.”
“Your sister, didn’t you send her off to England or something some years back,
young Tess my girl was very sad when the lass left.”
“She never left Tortuga Angus, I let everyone think that she had, her and my
mother both but they were here all the time, up in that big house on the hill.”
Angus looked at Jack shrewdly “the one that took it upon itself to burn to the
ground in the middle of the night?”
“Aye that one”
“So where are your Ma and Sister then laddie?”
“My mother died a while back and my sister…my sister Bella”
McGuiness’s head shot up and he frowned “Bella did you say.”
“Aye Bella, well I am thinking that you are putting two and two together Captain, Bella was with you.”
Angus’ face darkened and he thumped his tankard on to the scarred table “I
don’t like being made a fool of Sparrow; I suppose you were smirking under your
moustaches every time I set sail with that wee girl on board.” He was turning
red now his face almost the same hue as his flaming beard.
“I don’t like being made a fool of either” Jack said quietly, so quietly that
the other Captain had to lean in to make out what he was saying.
McGuiness stopped mid bluster; he gave a loud humph and took a swig from his
tankard.
“Go on then young fella, I am listening, I am not sure I am going to be liking
what I hear but I am listening”
Jack let out a sigh, time to apologise; he took a long draught from his own cup
and leaned back in his chair. No theatrics now, just the truth as much as he
knew of it anyway, he was sure that Bella had omitted a few things here and
there.
*
Bella was pacing the small room that was her home until they departed. She was
bored. Jack had not said where they were to be sailing just that they would be
leaving in a few days and that they would go where the wind took them. She was
excited but slightly nervous, it would be different from the playing on boats
that they had done as children. But she knew she was a good sailor so she was
not too concerned about that part of it, what was vaguely unsettling was the
fact that Will Turner would be on board as well, he made her feel jumpy.
Perhaps it was just that him and Jack were such good mates, she was too old to
be jealous about something as silly as that.
Bella yawned, she was itchy, and wondered if there was a tub near by that she
could have that long anticipated wash in. Getting to her feet she decided she
should go ask Selena, Jack had pointed out the blue door of her apartment; if
she needed anything she was to see her. She had almost asked how Jack knew
which room was Selena’s but had hastily shut her lips on the question flushing
as she realised the most likely way that Jack would have known.
She knocked on the blue door, she heard soft voices and a woman’s laughter and
swallowed hard, Selena had a guest, she would most likely not be happy with
Bella for disturbing her. She was about to turn away when the door opened,
framed in the late afternoon sunlight was probably the last person that she had
expected to see. William Turner naked to the waist his hair tangled about his
face.
She gasped unable to prevent the words that flew from her lips, her voice a
shocked whisper “You, but you love Elizabeth Swann you are betrothed, how could
you?”
“Who is it darling?” Selena’s husky voice drifted from within the room.
“Elizabeth is none of your concern” Will’s whisper was harsh and his eyes were
flat, the hand that he raised to brush his hair back from his face shook
slightly, and Bella thought that it was anger that made it shake, her certainly
looked as if he would have liked to have hit something. He looked back into the
room and raised his voice, his tone disgusted “Just that new girl, Flora I
think her name is.”
“What does she want” Selena sounded irritated.
“Yes what do you want?” Will looked down at her and Bella coloured, flushing
even redder when she noticed the scratches on his shoulders and the love marks
on his neck.
She looked at the floor “I just want to know where I can take a bath” she
mumbled shifting her feet, wishing she was anywhere but standing in front of
that open door.
Will gave her curt instructions that she was to use the tub in Jack’s quarters,
and added that she should have thought of that herself before shutting the door
firmly in her face.
*
Selena stretched out naked across the pillows the late afternoon sun golden on
her skin. She had her arms open to him but he stood seeming not to see her..
“What’s the matter Will?”
Selena raised her head to lean on her elbow, Will had shut the door on the
Sparrow girl, but instead of coming back to bed he had stood seemingly lost in
thought.
“Matter…nothing” he seemed to give himself a mental shake coming back to sit on
the side of the bed.
“Will..” this was not going as Selena had anticipated, she had hoped to make
love again and then to talk, Will had been seemed a little distant these last
few days and he seemed very thoughtful. This was the most time that they had
spent together since that first night he had stumbled into her establishment
fresh from Port Royal, full of despair, she had seen that in his eyes the first
time he had come to her bed. He had told her odd things here and there, the
rest she had wangled from Jack and Gibb, she knew all about Elizabeth and how the young
lady had broken off the engagement. How Will had come
to Tortuga looking to join Jack Sparrow’s crew, Jack
had known his father he was a tenuous connection to a family lost.
He had been unlike most other men that she entertained, gentle and with an
inner goodness, a pure soul Jack had said once and she agreed with that
observation. Certainly Will had changed these last years, he was not as naïve
as he had once been, she knew that he had sought solace in rum and women, but
when in Tortuga he always came to her, the loss of Elizabeth seemed to be
easing with time and until recently she had hoped that one day he might just
want to make things a little more permanent. Several of her girls had married
in the past few months and sharing in their excitement she had realised that
the love she had for Will was nothing like the all consuming passion that
possessed her friends, a type of love for certain but in all honesty was very
much the same way that she loved Jack. Certainly they were delicious
encounters, one or two breathless nights before Will sailed again, she would
occasionally think of him while he was away, but he did not fill her every waking
thought. This week had been lovely, but she now was looking forward to him
sailing so that she could have her independence back, it had been rather
empowering to suddenly realise that she did not need a man to shelter and look
after her or to make her happy. She allowed herself a small smile at the
thought of the woman that she had been, the woman who had felt that Tortuga was her only
escape, who would have thought that she would have become so strong. She looked
over at Will again, it would be a little sad to say goodbye but she liked her
freedom and she really wanted her room back. Boots and swords everywhere got
rather irritating once you had tripped over them once or twice.
She sat up and put a soft hand on his shoulder his muscles were rock hard, she
could see that his jaw was clenched.
“Whatever did Bella say to you?” she asked kneading gently “you are all tense..”
Will hesitated a moment then told her of the words just exchanged, Selena
sighed softly, “oh Will, Bella is very young, from what Jack said she has been
rather sheltered, he would have told her grand stories about you and Elizabeth
and well it takes a while to realise that the world is not always happy ever
after. I am sorry that she upset you.”
Will took her hand his fingers softly running over her palm “Selena…” he
hesitated again, all the words that he wanted to say, the regard he had for
this woman who even in the lowliest surroundings seemed somehow regal were
inadequate “I am sorry too, for speaking of things past when we are..well….”
“hush” she put a finger over his lips “I know what you are going to say my
darling William, I am very fond of you too, once I thought that I was in
falling in love but I can assure you my heart is quite safe.”
The relief on Will’s face was almost comical, and she suppressed a chuckle as
he leaned forward to kiss her forehead. “You are an amazing woman Selena.”
“Mmmm, I get told that quite often”
He gave a soft laugh; his mouth was on her neck now, trailing kisses down
across her shoulder, his hands moving in smooth strokes down her belly so that
she arched up towards him. His lips claimed her mouth, his body fit to hers,
and she wrapped her legs about him, kissing his shoulder as they moved together.
