Chapter 3.4 – Fairytale: Yuki-Onna (evening day 28, 2000)
At 1950, Tomoe returned to the Fett’s apartment to tuck Boba in. To Jango’s delight, she dropped off a change of clothing in the bathroom for her later use… and whatever she had planned with that rope?!
“Tonight, I would like to tell you the legend of the Peony Princess …” Tomoe started her story.
“Uh… not another princess-story, Mom. Don’t you have one with some action?”
“Such as…?”
“How about the origin of you stage name, ‘O-Yuki’ …was it?” Jango proposed
“My my, aren’t we in sinister mood tonight? I’ll do my best…” Tomoe sat back and started her story of the snow bride:
“Once upon a time, two villagers, a master and his apprentice journeyed to a forest, at some distance from their village. It was a bitterly cold night when they neared their destination and saw a cold sweep of water in front of them. They had planned to cross this river by boat, but the ferryman had gone away, leaving his boat on the other side of the water. As the weather was too inclement to admit of swimming across the river they were glad to take shelter in the ferryman's little hut.
The master, Mosaku, fell asleep almost immediately when he entered this humble but welcome shelter. His apprentice, his name was Minokichi, however, lay awake for a long time, watched the fire they had started while listening to the cry of the wind and the hiss of the snow as it was blown against the door.
Minokichi at last fell asleep, to be soon awakened by a shower of snow falling across his face. He found that the door had been blown open, and that standing in the room was a fair woman in dazzlingly white garments. For a moment she stood thus; then she bent over Mosaku, her breath coming forth like white smoke. After bending over the old man for a minute or two she turned to Minokichi and hovered over him.
“I was about to deal with you in the same way I relieved the old man over there…” Minokichi tried to cry out, but the air was suddenly too icy to breath. “But you are so beautiful; I cannot bring myself to take your young life just so,” her fist closed in front of his face with a snap and he almost fainted, “But if you ever dare to mention me to anyone, or speak about what you have seen, your life will be gone like this,” she opened her fist again, blew over it and the last flames of their little fire in the middle of the hut were extinguished.
The breath of this woman was like a freezing blast of wind within the dark.”
Boba pulled the blanket higher. By now, he had the experience to imagine the place and its dangers. He had been lucky to arrive there in late spring, when the weather was mild… and his mom had taken good care of the boat and everything.
Jango got the feeling that Tomoe was exaggerating the sardonic act a bit, maybe she needed to blow off some steam? Just when he started thinking how to make up to her, she dropped the act again. Her warm, caring attitude returned instantly as she continued to tell the story:
“Then Minokichi called out to his beloved master, "Mosaku, Mosaku, wake! Something terrible has happened!" But there was no reply. He touched the hand of his master in the dark, and found it was like a piece of ice. Mosaku was dead!
During the next winter, while Minokichi was returning home, he chanced to meet a pretty girl by the name of Yuki. She informed him that she was going to the provincial capital, where she desired to find an employment as a servant. Minokichi was charmed with this maiden, and he went so far as to ask if she were betrothed, and hearing that she was not, he took her to his own home, and in due time married her.
Yuki presented her husband with ten fine and handsome children, fairer of skin than average. When Minokichi's mother died, her last words were in praise of Yuki, and her eulogy was echoed by many of the country folk in the district.”
“Ten? We have our work cut out then, hm.” Jango managed to make it sound like a proposal for later.
Tomoe dismissed with a smile, “To be honest, today I felt I’ve ended up with ten times ten.”
“One night, while Yuki was sewing, the light of a paper lamp shining upon her face, Minokichi recalled the extraordinary experience he had had in the ferryman's hut.
"Yuki-san," he said, "you remind me so much of a beautiful white woman I saw when I was eighteen years old. She killed my master with her ice-cold breath. I am sure she was some strange spirit, and yet tonight she seems to resemble you."
Yuki flung down her sewing. There was a horrible smile on her face as she bent close to her husband and shrieked, "It was I, Yuki-Onna, who came to you then, and silently killed your master! Oh, faithless wretch, you have broken your promise to keep the matter secret, and if it were not for our sleeping children I would kill you now! Remember, if they have ought to complain of at your hands I shall hear, I shall know, and on a night when the snow falls I will kill you!"
Then Yuki-Onna, the Lady of the Snow, changed into a white mist, and, shrieking and shuddering, passed through the smoke-hole, never to return again”
Tomoe flipped her folding fan closed and pushed it underneath the belt straps of her pants and kissed Boba good night. “Sleep well. I’ll see you in the morning,” she bowed out.
“Apparently, their kids never had to complain,” Boba pouted, still wide awake, “what happened to ‘mine all day’, dad? You’ve given Tom’buir other jobs most of the day.”
“She must assume command of the company whose sarge she got killed last night. Once that is cleared, she will fit you into her schedule. Until then, you enjoy the privilege of training with me and the ARCs.”
“But the Alphas are almost as bad as the Nulls!”
“I truly hope so. Aside of the growth acceleration, they are your genetic copies.”
“Aside?!”
“Which means that you have twice the time to learn. Which you won’t need given equal intellect.” Boba shook his head. Discussing things with dad was impossible. “Go to sleep anyway. I have to call a meeting in a few, doing my own preparations for that exercise. It will just take half’n’hour or so, no running around.”

Jango kissed his son good night, donned his helmet and locked the apartment from the outside to be safe. Isabet and Llats were already in the designated meeting room, haggling who would do the shipping for the two opposing companies.
“I’ve been tasked with Gamma’s shipping out. Why don’t you do your job?” Llats tried to brush off Isabet’s change request.
“You should stay on jetty five, but let’s move Devil dog Company there. Look at Priest’s shipping list. He’s taken all the heavy machinery available. It doesn’t make sense to move that from the garage two stories lower half around the city to jetty eleven. The more air-support oriented logistics of Gamma Company should go on jetty eleven which was run by me so far.”
“Not looking forwards to work with Priest anymore? You volunteered for this two weeks ago.” - “Back then we didn’t have an equipment breakdown.” she waved the flimsy with the shipping list at Llats. “Just making a sensible proposal.” – “Any reason I should know of?” Llats poked. – “You just want to get around the dirt Priest will kick up on your jetty.” Isabet imputed.
“Whatever, keep it private.” Fett put his foot down. “I expect you all to work together like the professionals you are.”
“But if a little dirt worries you, I can switch to jetty five in the evening, do the clean-up for Priest.” Isabet proposed and Llats agreed.
Fett nodded. Clean-up for an infantry –based company was the least popular job around. If Wards got around that, he could be happy. “Wards: jetty eleven DD-company, Bralor jetty five for Gamma. Bralor runs the logistics for supervision from jetty nine,” he completed the schedule and greeted the other Cuy’val Dar he had invited.
