There was no body crumpled on
the deck, not yet, but there would be soon if they, no if he, did not get her
down from there. The spar she had been standing on dangled, entangled in the
sail and she was struggling to claw her way through the fabric before all
dropped to the deck.
“Take it” Jack pulled Anna Maria to stand at the wheel, removing his coat even
as he strode to the main mast.
“Rope” snapped at Gibbs who tossed him a neat coil, he slung it over his arm
and began to climb, ignoring the creaking, groaning, cracking of timber around
him. He was not going to let her bloody die on his ship.
Finally he was level with her, could see her clinging to the shattered mast, he
needed to be higher but he needed to explain.
“Maia when I swing you jump”
“No” she was shaking her head, “I will climb down, not jumping.”
“Don’t be a bloody goose, the whole mast could come down, you want to die girl
or you want to live?”
“And you’ll catch me?” he could hear the doubt in her voice.
“I will catch you luv” he could feel her looking at him, into him, but he did
not know if she found what she was searching for, because again she shook her
head. “Just trust me Maia, for once in your bloody life trust someone.”
“I can’t”
There was no time to be having this conversation, every second could be the
last but still he tried again, she had to jump, there was no way he could swing
through that tangle to grab her, she had to jump clear, out, over and then he
would catch her. He had to catch her.
“Trust me, please.” He was pleading now “I will not let you fall.”
She never said a word out loud, but he heard them in his head as clear as a
bell. “I trust you” and then again, shouted, “I trust you Jack, I trust you.”
A click, a jolt and he saw her eyes register shock, then something else and
then he felt it, her, a ball of jagged, raw emotion, fear, anger, despair and
so few small moments of joy, he wanted to weep at the pain, but instead he
clenched his teeth, nodded and climbed higher.
Quickly now, no time to think, one cast and the rope was secure around the
highest spar, he took a deep breath, wiped his palms and then wrapped the hard
line around his wrists. He jumped. He spun in the wind, swinging around the
mast, close to her, closer and he could see her green eyes now.
“Jump!!”
There was no hesitation, but her eyes locked with his. She jumped, legs pushing
herself off the timber, leaping, almost diving as far as she could, beginning
to fall as he spun once more around the mast, one arm reaching, seeking.
He caught her, one arm grabbing her around the waist, even as she wrapped her
arms around him. The physical impact knocked the breath from the both of them
and then she looked into his eyes and he almost let go of the rope. He could
feel and he could see, no barrier, no wall.
A shocked moment, then they both gasped for breath, filling empty lungs,
breathing deeply, slowly until there was breath enough for words.
“Hello Luv”
“Hello Jack” what he would have termed a shy smile.
“Shall we start this again Star of the Sea?”
“Start what”
“This” his lips were inches from hers a question in his eyes.
“Yes…please” even as their mouths touched, wind and rain unnoticed, the jagged
edges softened just a little.

“What in all the saints is Jack doing?” Gibbs was craning his neck, peering
upwards, through the flapping fabric, the driving rain, suddenly realizing and
shaking his head in disgust.
“The Captains kissing the witch…” the whispers started, and they all stared and
Gibbs groaned.
A sharp gust swung them around the mast, twisting the rope around his wrist and
he winced, she felt it, he saw the concern in her eyes and nodded. He let the
rope slide through his hands, slowly lowering them to the deck, his boots
hitting with a solid thunk, a second later her feet meeting solid planks. He
released her, patting her on the backside, her eyes narrowed and he smirked and
winked before turning to the crew.
“Back to work you lot, show is over” but he was grinning even as he shouted.
The crew rushed to their stations, casting looks over their shoulder at their
Captain and then Maia who stood back, not really knowing quite what to do next,
to do now everything felt so strange.
She could feel every thought, every bump, cut, graze on Jacks skin, this not
just a sensing, this was a knowing, a feeling and she could see that he could
feel it too, he looked at his hands, frowning then over at her, shaking his
head when he saw her bloody palms.
“Anna tend to Maia’s hands.”
She did not want to go. Not now. Now that she had found what she had been sent
to find. What she had needed to find.
Trust.
She spoke the word over and over in her head, so simple, so difficult. She
could truly say that she had never trusted, even as a child, not even her
teachers, she had always expected the worst. So now she could trust, she did
and it was him, of all the people, of all the men, Jack Sparrow. Calypso would
be watching, she was watching, she could sense the Goddess but did not need or
want to look for her. Just knowing that she was pleased and oddly amused enough
for now.
He looked up at her, from his place at the wheel, his kingdom and his eyes were
deep, thoughtful.
“Go on the wind will drop any minute now” he did not know how he knew it, but
he did, was it magic, perhaps, and if it was he wondered why he had ever
worried about it, she was magic after all and she trusted him. Understood him.
Long did she look, then she smiled and nodded turning to follow Anna Maria even
as the rain ceased and the wind died.
