Chapter Eighteen - Secrets at last Spoken
“Bella” Jack pulled her through the door, arms closing tight around her
crushing her to his chest. “God, I thought you were dead” He was squeezing her
so hard that she could hardly breathe, but then she was hanging on to him just
as tightly. The fear that she had felt when he had not been waiting for her
still fresh, her mouth still dry, the only way to reassure that he was alright
was to touch him.
“Jack, I’m sorry” tears were pricking now, and she tried to swallow the huge
lump in her throat burying her face in his shoulder, her arms wrapped around
his neck.
“Sorry” he had pushed her away now to stare into her face, he seemed to be having
trouble speaking “sorry, fucking hell Bella do you really think that sorry is
going to fix the unholy mess we are in.”
“What mess, you are safe and so am I. Maggie and Sam and the baby are alright”
she hesitated “they are? Aren’t they?”
“Yes they are safe” he spun to glare at her “how can you be so dense, have you
not noticed that our home has burnt to the ground.”
“I saw Jack, was it a spark from the fire?”
He looked at her in disbelief “no Bella it was not an accident. There were men
with guns waiting for those who tried to escape the flames.”
“Guns…why..who?”
“Oh for Christ’s sake I thought that you had a few brains. How many times have
I told you to keep to yourself, to stay in the house.
But no you go gallivanting around the Caribbean are you trying to get yourself
killed, to get your friends killed?” his hands were on her shoulders and he was
shaking her.
Bella stared at him, he had told her to stay close to the house, but he had
never told her why. No one had ever told her anything other than to be careful,
not tell anyone who she was, stay close to the house, don’t
wear the locket. But they had never said why and now Jack was shouting at her
as if she was supposed to know.
“Stop shaking me” she hit out at his hands, swinging one arm over and twisting
her shoulder so that she broke his grip. “Maybe you should have told me what
you so obviously know. But no instead you keep bloody secrets.” She was
shouting now “the mysterious Jack Sparrow always with his secrets, well if you
had told me why I was supposed to stay in the house then perhaps I would of. I
just thought that the sun had cooked your brain on that island and that you
just wanted to make sure that I never had a life.”
“That you never had a life…” Jack was shaking his head his voice rising as well
“You little goose I was trying to keep you alive.”
Bella was crying now, shouting and crying so angry that she was almost
incoherent. “For the love of God Jack, stop yelling at me. You
and your bloody secrets.”
*
Will hesitated his hand on the door knob; he could
hear shouting, from the rooms directly above, a female voice, Bella. Curiosity
had him linger a moment trying to make out what she was yelling, something
about Jack and secrets was all he could understand. Feeling slightly
uncomfortable to be eavesdropping he opened the door and stood looking at the
room that he shared with Selena. One side of the bed was a picture of feminine
neatness; the other looked like a mini armoury. He
should try and tidy up some, while he had a little time. Selena had been
muttering about tripping over swords and that she feared for her own life, lest
she fall over and stab herself through the heart in
the middle of the night. About as subtle as canon fire, but he had got the
hint. He began gathering up the various weapons that had been left where they
had fallen when they had tumbled into bed that first afternoon. Once they were
stacked neatly in the corner, he lay down on the bed arms crossed behind his
head.
Jack had asked him to let Tess know that Bella was
safe, sure that she would have been wondering about her friends disappearance
from the docks with some strange woman, so after he had set in motion the plan
to get Bella safely to Jack he had gone looking for Tess.
She had been at her family’s home and had been about to set off looking for
Bella, without letting on too much he had assured her that all was well. He had
also taken a note for Captain McGuiness, Angus had read it and frowned but had
nodded his assent. Jack was planning on calling on him later that evening, to apologise for his wayward sister’s deception, and to speak
with him about Captain’s business. Will had not told McGuiness of Bella, that
uncomfortable task being Jacks.
The shouting from upstairs seemed to be getting louder. Jack had said that
Bella had a temper; he had thought that his mate had been exaggerating, but it
seemed that this was one thing that was Jack had not unnecessarily embellished.
It sounded like she had an absolutely foul temper. Jack had also said that she
was spoiled and stubborn; sailing with Bella was going to be rather
interesting. Will was also slightly uneasy; she might very well assume that it
was he that had told Jack what she had been up to, that would be uncomfortable.
He also could foresee a rather fiery reaction when Jack saw fit to enlighten
her of his plan to keep her safe. He only hoped that she did not decide to take
an axe to the Pearl….There was a loud crash and Will winced, it sounded like
the furniture was being thrown about. Selena would not be happy if any of her
precious antiques were damaged.
Perhaps he would go downstairs for a bit, talk to old Mac the fiddle player, maybe have a spot of rum until the appointed time.
*
Jack hesitated, one of the reasons he had not told her was so that she would
not live in fear, the other that she did not go racing off on some harebrained
quest. Although from what he had heard she had already started that one.
He looked at her long and hard as if measuring her and somehow finding her
wanting. All of a sudden he seemed to notice what she was wearing. He choked on
whatever he was about to say and looked away as if he had been stung.
“For Christ’s sake Bella cover yourself. What
possessed you to wander around Tortuga dressed like that?”
“I think that this is Selena’s idea of a disguise.”
Jack spluttered looking at the ceiling, the floor, anywhere other than at her.
“It was not quite what I had in mind..” he stamped
over to the corner of the room. He seemed to be looking for something for Bella
to cover herself with, rifling in a chest that sat on the floor, discarding
shirts and breeches.
“Jack for God’s sake bugger the dress, you have seen breasts before.”
“Aye but this is not right…” he had gone into the other room and she could hear
him thumping about.
“Jack, Jack don’t suddenly decide to change the
subject, come back and tell me this mess that we are in and why. Jack!!!” she
stamped her foot in frustration, and kicked a chair. It toppled with a crash.
He reappeared in the doorway a length of silk in his hands, “Poseidon’s plums,
if you break Selena’s furniture you will be paying for it from your ill gotten
earnings. Here” he tossed the fabric at her and she caught it draping it around
her shoulders so that her upper body was covered.
“We will get a new dress” Jack said after a moment able to look at her again
“or you will be fighting off drunken pirates until we are ready to sail.”
“To sail?” Bella looked at him eyes shining “I am
going to sail with you, on the Black Pearl.”
“Aye” Jack’s face was sour “and don’t be looking like you just found a chest
full of treasure. Sit down and listen, this is the story or at least what I
know of it.”
She sat quickly, all smiles now and prepared to listen to what she had been wanting to know for so long.
Jack sighed then went to the wooden crates in the corner; he found two full
bottles of golden rum and brushed the cobwebs off them. Uncorking one he handed
it to Bella, the other he looked at for a long moment before prising it open and taking a swig.
“Almost twenty years ago our Father pulled a small boat from the sea………
*
The tale was finished and Bella sat quietly. Jack kept
looking at her out of the corner of his eye as he steadily drank. She had taken
the locket out of her belt pouch and was studying it, running a fingertip over
the engraving on the back of it. Finally she looked up at Jack.
“Why would someone I don’t know want to kill me?”
“I don’t know luv, but they certainly weren’t coming
to take you back to the welcoming arms of your family.”
“But…” her eyes were bright with tears.
Jack felt his heart clench at the pain on her face and he shook his head “Bella
don’t cry please. They were assassins, killers Bella, men with guns and knives,
both times.”
She sniffled and said something that he could not understand.
“Come here, come on” he held out his arms and she half staggered, half fell
towards him, crying great shuddering sobs. He pulled her up onto his lap so
that she was sitting cradled on his knees and held her tight while she cried.
“You are my sister, mine” he whispered fiercely “We are family, no one could
love you as much as I do. No one.”
He sat stroking her hair until the storm of weeping gradually lessened. With
one hand he fished a square of cotton out of a pocket and wiped her nose and
eyes. She gave a weak smile and took it from his hand blowing her nose. He made
a face and waved a hand.
“You keep that luv”
Bella laughed “I love you Jack” she kissed his forehead.
“I love you too” he grimaced slightly “er, do you
think you could get up now, you have grown somewhat since the last time you sat
on my knee…”
