Chapter 18 – Sekmet's army
The morning had come
swiftly, far too swiftly for both Rick's and Ardeth's tastes. Waking
up in each other's arms Rick would have liked to stay in the tent and
just forget about the world outside, but Ardeth had pressed a quick
kiss to his temple and had untangled himself to get up.
Since he didn't have a
choice anyway Rick followad his lover's example and readied himself
for battle. Strange how a few years ago he would have relished this
day, the danger that came with it. But back then he hadn't had
anything to loose.
They Med-jai had
assembled on top of the sand dune and Rick took his place next to
Ardeth, exchanging a quick glance with his lover. It looked as if
Ardeth was completely focused on the plain that spread out before
them, confident and assured of their victory. But knowing his lover
as well as he did Rick easily looked behind the mask, finding a more
worried expression hiding there.
Ardeth turned towards
his lover when he felt Rick's fingers graze his arm for a few
seconds, a small touch that was reassuring none the less. The smile
that had spread over Rick's face was very small and shaky, but the
Med-jai couldn't help but return it.
His mood not really
lifted but still somewhat lightened Ardeth focused back on the plain,
ordering one of his tribesmen to get him a telescope as he spotted a
dark shadow on the horizon. Taking the telescope that was offered to
him he focused on the dark spot, the horde of Lock-tai warriors
suddenly clear to his eye.
Getting up from the
ground he instantly raised his sword in the air and called out to his
troops, getting the warriors' full
attention. As soon as all eyes were trained on him he began to speak:
“The Lock-tai have reached the end of the plain, they will be
upon us shortly. Prepare yourself to defend your tribe and your
honor. May Allah and Sekmet grant us a victory.”
The troops
cheered him on as he mounted his horse, Rick getting on his own right
beside him. Leaning over to him Ardeth caught his lips in a fiery
kiss, startling the American. He briefly allowed his tongue to trace
the contours of Rick's mouth, but he had to draw back then. They
didn't have time and there were things he needed to say. “Rick,
stay at my side.”
A firm nod from his
lover was all he needed, so he turned back
to his troops. The Med-jai had formed a long attack line, similar to
the formation they had used when they had fought Anubis' army. The
other leaders were standing in front of their own tribes, waiting for
Ardeth to give the order to attack. The Lock-tai were clearly visible
now, stirring up the sand as they galloped over the dry land.
Once again raising his
sword Ardeth bellowed at his men: “Until death.” And as
they answered like a single person he gave the signal to attack,
hundreds of hooves suddenly thundering over
the ground and filling the silent air with the roaring of battle.
While his horse
charged towards the enemy Ardeth felt the amulet of Sekmet resting
around his neck, wondering when the Goddess would send her support.
He hoped that it would be before their numbers were decimated because
their tribes couldn't afford to loose a single man.
The thought had barely
passed his mind when the amulet suddenly
started to glow, burning his skin with the heat it emitted.
Startled Ardeth looked over at Rick, just to find that his lover
emitted the same otherworldly
glow and had an expression of disbelief spread
over his face.
The light spread
outwards from them, enveloping their whole bodies before it expanded
like a spider's web, reaching out to each of the Med-jai warriors.
Ardeth would have expected that the light would disturb their sight,
but his senses seemed to grow stronger, the sound of the hooves
suddenly louder in his ears.
And then as the light
had finished enveloping the men a tingling sensation spread through
his body, racing along his veins and infusing even the tips of his
fingers and toes. Ardeth couldn't help but stare at his hands in
fascination, watching as a light fur appeared all over his skin, his
hands transforming into clawed paws. He also felt the hair on his
head growing, changing into a lion's mane while his teeth sharpened
and his canines increased in length.
After having completed
these changes the tingling stopped abruptly and the light vanished,
allowing Ardeth to cast a quick look at his transformed lover. Rick's
eyes had changed to the color of molten gold, his teeth bared in an
animalistic snarl as he pushed his horse forward. His golden hair was
changed to a long mane, almost reaching down to the middle of his
back.
Before he knew what he
was doing Ardeth heard himself roaring, sounding exactly like a lion
that calls his pack to a hunt. Answering calls were sounding from
everywhere around him, fierce and primal in their strength.
The armies had almost
reached each other and Ardeth thought he could already see the
expressions on the Lock-tai's faces. Cocky confidence that suddenly
turned to sheer horror as they came close enough to see the Med-jai's
faces, see the lions they were up against. But they still didn't
stop, pushed forward by the will of their leader and their own lust
for battle.
Clouds of sand
enveloped everything as the two armies crashed into each other.
Swords clashing against steel and claws.
Ardeth rode through the
lines of his enemies, his teeth bared as his sword sliced through
their bodies, always casting quick glances to reassure himself that
Rick was still at his side. But a sword that was thrown in his
direction forced him to turn his horse around quickly and when he
turned back Rick was already out of his sights.
His short moment of
inattentiveness almost caused him severe injury since a Lock-tai used
it to attack him. But his newly-heightened
senses allowed him to turn around just at the right moment, giving
him a chance to deflect the blow. The force
with which their swords clashed together was still enough to throw
him off his horse, but he quickly got back up on his feet.
His opponent had also
fallen off his horse so they faced each other on even ground.
Ardeth's sword flashed forward with inhuman speed and strength, but
his opponent was lucky and deflected his blow. But his next attack
was even fiercer that the first one,
throwing the Lock-tai to the ground.
His blade was swift in
beheading his enemy, but as he straightened back up to face the next
opponent a frantic cry from behind him caused him to whirl around.

Damn it. Rick had
turned back around after defeating one of their attackers and Ardeth
had vanished from his side. But for the moment he had no time to look
for his lover, who was perfectly capable of fighting for himself
anyway.
Rick easily deflected
the swords that were aimed in his direction, marveling
at his animalistic strength and speed. What disturbed him a little
was the urge to roar in triumph every time his blade cut down one of
their foes, but the noises that could be heard over the clashing of
swords told him that most Med-jai didn't hesitate to let the cries
out.
Blood splattered on his
face as he cut another Lock-tai off his horse, blood as red as the
clothing of the man he was now faced with. Although Rick had never
seen him before he knew this man to be the Lock-tai's leader, his
strange lion senses warning him of the other alpha.
His teeth bared into a
snarl of their own volition as he jumped off his horse, mimicking the
action of the Lock-tai. The other man looked remarkably like the dead
Lock-nah and Rick couldn't help wonder if they had been brothers. But
the musing was quickly drained out by his more animalistic thoughts,
the wish to kill the one who dared to intrude on their territory.
A roar broke from
Rick's lips as he attacked the other man, their swords clashing
together fiercely. And amongst the noise of the battle a purring
voice filtered into his thoughts, cheering her champion on and urging
him to attack with even more strength than
he was already employing.
Listening to the
commanding voice Rick once again thrust his sword forward.
