Kayla spent a few hours with Nam’rah. Unlike the males
on the ship, the females were complete opposite. They were strong among each
other. They shared so much of themselves. They watched each others children and
nursed them like it was their own. Females had a say so over everyday events
but everything went through their mates.
When Kayla walked into her room Ga’gan was standing
there waiting for her. “What’s wrong,” she questioned walking past him. He
stopped her and held her from behind.
“I talked to Kul’vir,” he said. He felt her pulse race
when his brother’s name was mentioned. “It’s ok Kayla. I’m sorry for neglecting
you. I’ve been bombarded with my own thoughts and feelings and completely
forgotten about yours.” Kayla shrugged her shoulders as he walked her to the
bedroom. He started to take her clothes off but she backed away.
“You don’t have too,” she said shyly as she took her
own clothes off.
“But I want to Kayla,” he purred.
“After all these months?”
He growled at her softly, “Let me make it up to you.”
“Maybe tomorrow.”
“I won’t be here tomorrow. I’m going to go find Ne’el
and Maha'vin.” Kayla turned around and looked at him.
“You are just now telling me,” she asked getting
upset. “Can’t you wait until the baby arrives?”
“I talked to Kul’vir and he will be there for you in
every step of the way. He is your active mate. You do understand if you go into
heat while I’m gone it’s ok. I gave Kul’vir permission.”
Ga’gan started taking some of his things out of the
drawers as Kayla wiped her tears away. “Kul’vir has his own family to worry
about Ga’gan and I just want mine.” Kayla sat on the bed slowly. Ga’gan sat
next to her and placed his hand on her knee. Nothing was said for a moment as
he listened to her soft sniffles.
“I want mine as well Kayla. That’s why I have to go
find my brother and Uncle.” He stood back up and started placing some things in
a large bag.
“Please stay with me tonight,” Kayla pleaded softly.
“I can’t bear to see you leave me Ga’gan.” He nodded and walked over to her.
She started to undress him slowly but he stopped her.
“Kayla I have to leave tonight,” he said softly. “I
can only stay for an hour. A few hours ago there was a distress signal coming
from Ne’el’s ship.” Ga’gan finished packing and walked over to her
“I understand,” Kayla tried not to worry him. “You go
ahead and go. Just hurry back to us ok?” Kayla placed his hand on her stomach.
Ga’gan pulled out his knife and cut the tip of his
hair. “By the time I return the baby will be born,” he placed the hair on the
bed. “When I return I want to know if I’m raising my son or my cousin.” Kayla’s
mouth opened but she was too stunned to speak.
He was about to walk out. “Ga’gan you said it didn’t
matter,” Kayla said in shock. “Is this your reason for being so distant with
me?”
“Kayla please, we will discuss it when I return.” He
didn’t turn back around. Kayla walked over to the pillows where her and Kul’vir
would sit and talk. Her soft sobbing finally put her to sleep.
When Kayla woke up Stef’na was sitting next to her. “I
put a blanket on you,” Stef'na said softly. “You were trembling in your sleep.”
“Thank you,” Kayla whispered as she sat up. Neither
one of the females said anything to each other for a while.
“Ga’gan will be fine you know,” Stef’na assured her.
“Kayla I know Kul'vir wishes to mate with you and if you’re in heat I really
don’t mind. Since my pregnancy I don’t have any particular attraction to
Kul’vir. I thought feelings were exchanged the last time between you and him.
He explained to me what he told Ga’gan yesterday. I can understand the scent
attraction. You know Sh’lok?”
“Yes I used to train with him,” Kayla said softly as
she looked over at Stef'na. Her mandibles moved softly as she trilled with
excitement.
“His scent makes me go crazy,” she laughed. “Every
female I know goes to him when they’re in heat so he can prepare them. Of
course, with the females without a mate, he does more than just prepare them.
I’m sure he has a few little Yautja’s running around here.”
“So some females don’t know who the father of their
baby is?”
“Of course they do,” Stef'na said. “It’s a bragging
rite.”
“My babies father is an honored class warrior,”
Stef'na tried imitating some of the females as Kayla laughed. “My baby comes
from Sh’lok.” Stef'na waved her hands in the air. “DNA tests are performed all
the time. The males don’t really care unless of course they have a mate and
they think that mate may have been with another male. Even then they are
willing to raise the child as their own.”
“But you and Ga’gan didn’t mind when Kul’vir mated
with me, yet we have life mates,” Kayla turned to look at her.
Stef'na looked a little uneasy about the conversation.
“Mating is fine Kayla as long as you don’t exchange feelings. Starting to feel
for someone else’s mate when you already have one is equivalent to betrayal and
disrespect.”
“Cheating,” Kayla said softly.
Stef'na tilted her head to the side. “I have never
heard that word used in this way, but yes I think you would call it, cheating.
Any male will tell another male if he mated with a female who has no permanent
mate. Like Sh’lok. It’s during the mating, no feelings are exchanged. He’s
simply creating life. A mating ritual is when the feelings become the same.
That’s why the rituals are special and encouraged for us to see.”
“But Kul'vir said the ritual was like a training.”
Stef’na laughed, “To the males, of course. Females see
it differently. You are declaring to the clan that you
choose to protect, and care for this person for the rest of your life. A sexually charged negotiation among two people. Mating is
what we live for. It keeps our clan strong.”
“Mating and war,” Kayla laughed softly then started to
cry again. Stef'na scooted closer to her and rubbed on her back as she emitted
a soft purr noise. “He will be back soon,” Stef'na assured her. “He took a good
team of warriors with him. He insisted on his brother staying to watch over
us.”
“You know who my mate is supposed to be if something
happens to him,” Kayla wiped her tears away. “Pa’ram. He hates me. The first
time we met he wanted to kill me.”
Stef'na made a noise of disgust. “Pa’ram’s
social etiquette is lacking. I thought his scent was a little off. At his age
he should have had offspring by now.”
“So how many children does Maha'vin have?”
“Just ten. The last is from Ka’mya. Maha'vin’s is really picky.”
He told me none, Kayla thought. “And Ga’gan,” she asked slowly.
“None,” Stef'na patted her knee and laughed. “Him and Ne’el are gone so much they have never had time to
even sniff a female. Though, I know some females that wanted your head as a
trophy when they got word of the ritual.” Kayla smiled.
“Why did you choose Kul’vir?”
Stef'na shook her head softly before answering. “Well
he’s the elder’s son. That’s honorable enough. His lineage consists of
honorable warriors. He is destined to be great. My mother encouraged the mating
and Kul’vir used to groan softly every time he saw me. He was attracted to my
scent, but he never craved it. Like the females crave Sh’lok’s scent, Kul’vir
craved yours. It’s what drives him to mate and I’m completely
fine with it.”
“I understand,” Kayla said softly.
“Well there’s something I wanted to talk to you
about,” Stef'na began. “Why don’t you move in with us until Ga’gan comes back?”
“No,” Kayla said quickly. Stef'na’s eyes had a look of
bewilderment. Nam’rah tried to show Kayla how to control her scent by focusing
on something else, but she wasn’t ready to live with the person who’s scent
drove her crazy. “Really, I will be fine here. If I need anything I can call
you or Kul’vir on my com.”
“Well he is assigned as your active mate while Ga’gan
is away and our bed is large enough for three.” Kayla started to fluff a
pillow.
“What is an active mate?”
“Everything except the feelings. So if you happen to go in heat and have his baby it’s
perfectly fine. It’s like taking on a second mate without the ritual and it’s a
temporary status. So you might as well move in with us.”
“Well why not give Pa’ram the pleasure of just taking
me in,” Kayla joked.
“It can cause a challenge if Pa’ram decides to keep
you for himself once Ga’gan returns,” Stef'na explained. “So a male usually
chooses someone within his family. There’s always a higher honor and respect
among family members. Kul’vir will gladly let Ga’gan resume his duties when he
returns.”
“Well, I thank you for the offer but really I will be
fine. Here comes Kul’vir.”
Stef'na laughed, “Wow you can smell him like I can
smell Sh’lok.” Kayla concentrated on just smelling the fruit in front of her as
Kul'vir walked in. Stef'na walked over to him and gently nuzzled his neck. He
purred softly.
“Kayla, are you ok?” Kul’vir asked.
“Yes I’ll be fine,” She said looking at the fruit.
“Do you wish to come and stay with us?”
“No, Stef'na already asked me. I’ll be ok alone.”
Stef’na looked at Kayla strangely. “Why is she talking
to the fruit?” Stef'na asked.
Kul'vir shook his head as he spoke to Stef'na softly.
“She’s trying to concentrate her scent on something else.”
“I can here you talking about me,” Kayla turned around
to look at Kul’vir. His arms were folded and Stef'na was holding onto one of
his biceps tightly. Kayla felt herself wishing it was her. She quickly turned
back around and looked at the fruit. Stef'na started to laugh at her.
“If you need anything Kayla please let us know.” When
they left she closed her eyes and laid back down.
She didn’t see anyone for over a week. Whenever the
servants left she locked her door so neither Stef’na nor Kul’vir could walk in
on her. She called them daily to see if they heard anything from Ga’gan. She
walked out the shower to see a freshly made bed. Kayla cursed at herself for
forgetting to lock the door. She hadn’t slept in the bed since Ga’gan left.
Instead, Kayla would take the sheets off the bed and sleep on the pillows in
the other room. She took the sheets off slowly and locked her door. Suddenly
she froze. “How long have you been here?” she asked, not looking in Kul’vir’s
direction.
“Long enough to see the servants make your bed,” he
answered. “How long have you been sleeping on these pillows?”
“Since Ga’gan left,” she sat across from him and
stared at the fruit.
“Over two weeks?”
“I thought it’s only been a week or so.” Kayla refused
to look at him.
He started to laugh at her. “Kayla you don’t have to
stare at what you’re concentrating on.” Kul’vir stood up and sat next to her.
Kayla didn’t look at him. Kul’vir turned her head so she could look at him.
“Now think about the fruit. The smell and taste of the
orange-lokea.”
She tried to think about the fruit, but all she could
smell was him. “Kul’vir it’s not working.”
“I can tell,” he answered. He growled when she touched
his face. “Kayla…”
“I’m sorry,” Kayla blurted but she didn’t remove her
hand. Instead it trailed down his chest and to his stomach. His scent was
getting stronger. Kul'vir purred softly but suddenly stopped. He hesitated as
he removed Kayla’s hand from his body.
“I don’t think I can do this,” he looked at her as she
got on her knees beside him and sniffed his neck softly.
“It’s so strong,” she murmured. “Is this how you felt
during your ritual when you could smell me? Was I this strong?”
“Yes,” he started to breathe a little harder as Kayla
roamed her hands over his chest. He placed his hand on her waist and touched
her cheek softly with his before nuzzling her neck with his mandibles. Kayla
straddled his lap and he growled again at her. She knew it was a warning but
she completely ignored him. Kayla put her hands around his neck and rested her
head on his shoulder as she closed her eyes.
“I should be worried about Ga’gan right now,” she
whispered. “I should be upset that he’s not here with me but all I can think
about is mating with you.” Kul'vir grabbed her arms and pushed her back on the
pillows.
Kul’vir tried to concentrate on making his erection go
down.
Kayla finally caught her breath and looked at him.
“I’m, I’m sorry. I don’t know what came over me.”
“I didn’t harm you did I?” he asked standing up. “I
didn’t mean to push you off of me in such a ruff manner, but...”
“No, I’m fine.”
Kayla stood up and started to walk away. When she reached the bedroom Kul'vir held
her from behind. She immediately thought of Ga’gan. “Please don’t touch me like
that.” Kul'vir turned her around and looked at her. “It reminds me of Ga’gan.”
The door com startled them both. Kayla went to the bathroom and Kul’vir
answered the door. It was one of the communication officers. He greeted Kul’vir
with a nod.
“We made
contact with Ga’gan,” he told him. “He wishes to speak with his family. I will
route the communication to his room in fifteen minutes.” He handed Kul’vir a
pilot communicator so he could speak with Ga’gan.
“Make sure it’s on a private channel,” Kul’vir said
before closing the door.
He sat on Kayla’s bed as he waited for her to come out
the bathroom. Kayla walked out fully dressed. She looked at the strange object
in his hand. Before he could explain what it was she heard Ga’gan’s voice.
Kayla put her hands over her mouth so she wouldn’t scream. Kul’vir trilled at
her softly.
“Hello brother,” Kul’vir said. “Have you found Ne’el?”
“I’m not even on the planet yet,” he responded. “But
the distress signal is stronger. It will be a few more weeks before I’m able to
reach them. How is Kayla?”
“I’m fine,” Kayla laughed as she wiped her tears away.
Ga’gan laughed at her. “When will you return?”
“Kayla I do not know,” he sighed. “Kul’vir let me talk
to her alone.” Kul’vir got up to leave but Kayla stopped him. She shook her
head no.
“Ok,” she said softly. “What do you wish to talk to me
about?”
“Did you do the DNA test?” he questioned. Kul’vir
looked at her strangely. She never told him about a DNA test.
“I thought I should wait until the baby was born,”
Kayla said feeling a little uneasy about the discussion. “Ga’gan you said it
didn’t matter.”
He was quiet for a moment. “I just don’t understand
how you accepted an answer of it grew,” he blurted. “Kayla I’ve always sensed
that maybe it was a mutual decision.”
“What… what,” Kayla shook her head in disbelief. She
looked up at Kul'vir whom was gripping the bed tightly. He watched as Kayla’s
eyes started to water. “I told you what had happened Ga’gan. It wasn’t mutual.
I though it was you.” Kayla felt a pain coming from her stomach. She held her
stomach tightly. “It was over a year since I last saw you. I did not know how
quickly or how often your species body grew. I told you all of this!”
“I just want to know if it’s my child,” he raised his
voice slightly. “This will be my first child Kayla. I have that right to know.”
“You will know when you return Ga’gan,” she said
feeling another sharp pain from her stomach.
“Have you mated with Kul’vir since my departure?” he
questioned. “You were in heat when I left.”
“I’ve been in heat since I been pregnant,” Kayla shook
her head in disbelief. Kayla looked at Kul'vir as she thought about what
happened. “No.” She looked out the window.
“Ok,” he answered. “I must go. I miss you Kayla.”
Kayla made a huff noise. “What was that?”
“That’s an ooman expression,” Kayla sighed. “It
translates to I don’t believe you when you say you miss me.”
“Kayla,” Ga’gan said, but Kayla didn’t respond. She
walked over to the window. She heard a computer voice say ‘end transmission’.
Kul'vir was silent as he watched her wipe her tears
away and hold her stomach. “Maha’vin tried to kill me,” Kayla said breaking the
silence. “I would never voluntary sleep with him.”
“I know,” Kul’vir said. “I believe you.”
He stood next to her. Kayla shook his mandible softly
and smiled. “Thank you.” Kul’vir growled and playfully swatted her hand away.
“Does he always talk to you that way?”
“We have not been too close lately,” Kayla explained.
Kayla felt another sharp pain and held her stomach.
“Are you in labor?” he asked calmly.
“I don’t know,” Kayla said as she leaned over from the
pain. “I don’t know what labor feels like.” There was a loud continuous bang on
the door. Kul'vir lifted Kayla and walked her to the door.
“This is not happening,” Kul’vir sighed as he looked
at Stef'na. Kul'vir called one of the guards over to carry Kayla to the medical
lab. Kul'vir gently picked up Stef’na.
“You smell pretty good,” Kayla said to the guard when
they were on the elevator. Stef'na couldn’t help but to laugh in between her
pain. The guard nodded at Kayla and continued to look straight ahead.
“Tell me they’re not both in labor,” Pahel groaned.
“If I told you that I would be lying Pahel,” Kul'vir
sighed. Kul'vir sat in between both of them and held their hand.
Sh’lok walked in holding his side and Stef'na started
to purr. Kayla smiled at her but Kul’vir growled. “Wow Kul’vir now I see why
you haven’t been sparring,” he teased. “I’m jealous.”
“Shut up,” Kul'vir said in annoyance.
“Hello Sh’lok,” Stef'na smiled as her mandibles moved
softly.
“Hello Stef'na,” he nodded slowly. “Hello Kayla.”
“Hello Sh’lok,” she tried to sing like Stef'na. He
laughed at her.
“You know my mate is attracted to your scent,” Kul'vir
growled. “Will you please get away from her while she has the baby?” Kayla
tried to smell him but she could only smell Kul’vir. Sh’lok laughed and left
the room.
Kayla was in pain for hours. Stef'na was actually very
calm until she had to push the baby out.
“Kayla you have to push soon,” Kul’vir said softly. He
rubbed Stef'na’s hand across his cheek as she howled from the pain.
“Have you seen how big your species head is,” Kayla
growled as sweat poured from her body. “It’s impossible.” Kul'vir growled at her
but Kayla growled louder.
“She's right,” Pahel sighed as he looked in between
Kayla’s legs. “She's only dilated enough to have an ooman baby.” Kayla screamed
as a pain surged through her body. Pahel did something to the machine she was
connected to before she passed out.
Kayla woke up slowly as Pahel stared at her. “Are you
the only doctor this ship has,” Kayla mumbled.
Pahel laughed at her. “There are five fully trained
doctors and twenty assistants. You will be just fine. Your incision will heal
in a matter of a day or so. I need you to nurse your little girl.”
“Is she ok,” Kayla smiled as he picked up the baby
that was bundled tightly.
“You mean does she look like you or me,” he laughed as
he placed her in Kayla’s arms.
Kayla smiled when she looked at the baby. Her head
looked like that of a Yautja but her face was human. Her skin was a pale color
with slight hues of a rusty red color. When she opened her eyes they reminded
her of Ga’gan’s eyes. Kayla laughed softly. When she nursed she looked around to
find Stef'na. Kayla could see them in another room. Kul'vir looked so happy.
Kayla laughed when she watched him pat his chest softly with his fist. His
victory pat, Kayla thought. For a moment she felt slightly jealous of
Stef'na. She also felt slightly angry at Ga’gan for not being there. Kul'vir
looked in Kayla’s direction and she quickly looked away.
Pahel and Kul’vir approached Kayla at the same time.
“May I leave?” Kayla asked Pahel as she tried not looking at Kul’vir.
Pahel looked at Kul'vir then back to her. “Actually
since this is all new to us I would prefer you stay here for a few days so I
can monitor you and the baby,” Pahel said sitting next to her. “Kayla we never
did an image scan on you because I always heard just two heartbeats. You and the
baby, but you had twins. The little boy didn’t make it. Our clan has never
produce two children at the same time. This was new for me. Maybe if I checked
you thoroughly…”
“It’s not your fault,” Kayla whispered as she wiped
her tears away.
“He was small so it had to happen during the first few
months,” Pahel concluded. Pahel got up and left. Kul’vir sat next to her.
“Is her skin ok?” Kayla asked softly.
“Her skin is perfect,” Kul’vir purred. He reached for
Kayla’s baby. “May I?” Kayla nodded and he held the baby gently. When Kul'vir
purred she immediately responded by purring back, Kayla started to laugh but
Kul'vir looked at her as thought something was wrong.
“What’s wrong?” Kayla said looking at him as he handed
her the baby.
“Nothing,” Kul'vir said looking
down at her. He then looked at Kayla. She could tell he was visibly upset. He
shook his head softly. “She's very beautiful.” He walked away from her. Kayla
knew there was more but she didn’t understand why he was lying to her.
