Chapter Summary: Darry and Trish are still at the mercy of
the Creeper until unexpected help arrives!
Note: Sorry for the delay in posting this! I’ve
had some problems recently, which shouldn’t be an excuse, but I offer it none
the less. Plus I’m close to finishing this story and am kind of sad about it.
“And He said that it isn’t worth it to lose the kingdom
and gain the world!” the man with a
gravel voice proclaimed across the airwaves.
“No it doesn’t do my children!”
Trish, her body aching from being hurled away from
Darry and into a wall, watched as the Creeper screamed, its hands brought to
its head and obviously in pain. She briefly contemplated how strange it was
that Darry turning on the stolen car’s radio to some crazy preacher talking
about salvation and damnation had been the very thing that had finally made her
know what the monster was after. The thing that Darry possessed and she
didn’t. She had been looking at the
answer all along, staring into it and receiving comfort: His eyes. She should have known it she scolded
herself. Darry’s eyesight had always been better than her own. He had been able
to hold that fact at least over her anytime she made him feel that she was superior
to him in every way. While she needed to use glasses or contact,s Darry was
free from such a hassle.
It should have been obvious to her. Wasn’t it his
eyes she missed so sorely when he was gone?
Just one more chance to look into them had been one of the greatest
motivations that had led her on this crazy quest.
The monster still screaming, shaking the whole
abandoned factory with its anger, Trish forgot his presence entirely. Her eyes
were solely on her brother. He was still crying . His hands were holding his
face in pain. It was an agony to her that she had had to cause him this pain.
But she had done it to save him. What were his eyes compared to his life?
She crawled towards Darry. The Creeper either did not
see her, lost in its own frustration, or it simply didn’t care. The woman placed a gentle hand on the young
man’s shoulder, fearing he would throw it away. He didn’t. Darry let his sister
hold him, taking him in her arms and kissing the top of his head.
As if finally remembering them or sensing the love
that was so much in contrast to its hate, the Creeper stopped its wailing to
look at the couple embracing on the floor in front of it. The thing breathed
heavily not liking what it saw. It didn’t like that the children were together
when he had meant to tear them apart. It did not like them alive when one of
them was meant to be dead and lost forever.
Realizing it could still change this the Creeper
shrieked drawing the children’s attention to it. The boy could no longer see but the girl could. And the look of
fear in her eyes was enough to satisfy the beast.
Trish stroked her lover’s back. He was still crying
but he looked to the sound of the monster’s cry. He could not see the anger in
the Creeper’s eyes and Trish was grateful for this. Better for him to die
without that horrific sight. She
however was not spared. The revelation was a wound that though she had saved
her love from the fate he had suffered in one reality he would still die. But
at least they would be together.
Trish kissed Darry’s head once more and the Creeper
was stunned as it saw the look of fear in the woman’s eyes turn to one of
triumph. He raised his hand to grab the
girl and wipe that look forever from her face when another sound broke the new
silence.
The sound of furiously flapping wings disturbed the
horrible calm of the factory. The Creeper looked back just as the crow flew at
it. The claws dug into the monster’s
flesh. Tearing it apart in its fury. The Creeper cried out again. Trish eagerly watched, knowing that the crow
was her own.
It had come to save her. The bird’s claws remained enclaved into the Creeper’s face. Though it tried to pry free it was
unsuccessful. The Creeper was no fool
however, it grabbed onto the bird and broke it’s neck. The sound was a cruel
one and Trish’s heart broke. Still
strangely the sound of flapping wings did not go away. It was becoming louder.
The young woman, still holding onto her lover, saw
the birds approaching. There were thousands of them. The Creeper having finally
mangaged to pull the crow from its face was soon greeted with the sight of it
being replaced by a thousand more crows. They landed on it covering the monster
like a black ebony cloak.
Knowing that this was an opportunity which would not
be offered again, Trish got to her feet and pulled Darry to his as well.
“We’ve got to go,” she whispered.
“What’s going on?” Darry asked. “What’s that sound?”
“Don’t ask stupid questions Darry! If I say go we
go!”
The young man needed no more encouragement. He
entrusted his life to his sister.
She led him back through the factory, watching in awe
the steady steam of birds flying towards where the Creeper lied. It’s screams
muffled past the birds still covering it.
Trish found the window where the Creeper had entered
and as she did she saw even more birds entering the factory. Thanking God that it wasn’t too high, Trish
placed her brother’s hands on to the rim and pushed him up. The birds stopped
their entrance as he did this and also when the girl followed. She dropped onto the earth beside her brother
and watched the line of birds resume it’s flight inside the factory.
Pulling Darry to his feet once more, the girl ran
with him to the road. She turned back
once to see the factory. It was midnight, turned to black in a blanket of
crows. Trish did not know if Darry was
lucky not to see the sight or if he was robbed somehow. It was a thing of
beauty. The birds had been their saviors. Taking a deep breath she started to
run as far away from the factory as she could, dragging Darry along with her,
who although still in pain was grateful for the feel of his sister’s strong
hand within his own.
