Chapter 19
On the next
morning they left Savannah with a light carriage, drawn by a friendly, palomino
coloured horse. Marge had offered to borrow them both and they had gladly
accepted.
It took them
a while, lots of laughs and a few missed junctions until they got used to
steering the carriage. They had calculated about three days for the journey and
it turned out that they were right. As they knew the money they had still left
would not last forever, they stayed overnight in small inns. None of the rooms
had the privacy and the comfort of their room at the Sycamore Hotel, so they
reluctantly postponed any kind of intimate actions for later…
On the
third day they reached the small town of Hopewell. Will had noticed that the
closer they got, the more silent Jack fell. He knew he was lost in memories and
sat silently by his side, waiting until Jack stopped the carriage near the
first houses.
“Are you
fine?” he asked softly.
Jack took a
deep breath. “Yeah. It´s just so…” He laughed helplessly. “It all looks so
small! And all the memories come back…”
Will rubbed
his shoulder. “Where are we going now? To the plantation?”
Jack shook
his head. “No… First we will visit our old family lawyer. He is the trustee who
looks after the plantation. Although… Well, he was quite old when I left the
town. I am sure he´s dead by now…” He pressed his lips together. “We´ll see.”
They
fastened the carriage in front of an old elegant house on the main street. A
brass plate said “Copeland, Lawyer”. “Hm… Still the same name…” Jack said. The
door stood open so they walked in.
They
climbed up the stairs and came into a large office. One of the walls was
covered with huge bookshelves, filled with books up to the ceiling. A ladder
was leant against the shelf, and on the ladder stood a man, about Jack´s age,
on his tiptoes, trying to reach one of the books that was on the highest shelf.
He had not noticed his visitors yet but was fully occupied with holding his
balance on the ladder.
Jack looked
at him for a long time. Then he grinned.
“Terence,
in the end you will fall down and break your arm like you did when you tried to
steal one of your Granny´s cookie jars from the top of her kitchen cupboard.”,
he said aloud.
The man
startled, his foot slipped from the ladder and he nearly fulfilled Jack´s
prophecy. In the last moment he managed to hold on to the shelf, stumbled down
to the ground. With his eyes wide open he stared at Jack.
“Who are
you? And how do you know…” He scratched his chin. “I told everyone I fell down
the stairs because I tripped over the cat… Only one guy knew… The one who
talked me into stealing the cookies…” He narrowed his eyes, shook his head. A
smile formed on his face.
“No… You
can´t be… Jack? Jack Wentworth??”
Will
wondered how many more last names he would get to know from Jack, but he didn´t
say anything.
Jack
laughed. “Yes… Yes, it´s me… And this here is Will, Will Turner…”
The other
man still stared at him, his mouth half open.
“Oh my
God!” He walked over to them with fast steps, hugged Jack tightly, shook Will´s
hand. “I can´t believe it! It must be… Over twenty years ago?”
Jack
wiggled his head. “Yeah, something like that…”
“You
disappeared! Often we thought you were dead, but from time to time we heard
that someone saw you somewhere in the world…” Terence laughed. “I remember
George Winterbottom, that crazy guy, he insisted he met you in some rotten inn,
said you looked like a pirate… Always had a vivid imagination…”
Jack raised
an eyebrow. “A pirate… How funny…”
He looked
around. “So now this is your office?”
Terence
nodded. “Yes… Took it over from Grandpa… He never wanted to retire and died
here at his desk at the age of 81…”
He walked over
to a small bar, poured Whiskey into three glasses, handed them two of it. “To
your health!”
He grinned
at Will. “This guy here was the wildest kid you could think of.. Always had
some ideas in mind that would get us into trouble…”
Will
chuckled. “I believe every single word you say…”
Terence
sipped on his drink. “But you surely did not come only here to nearly giving me
a heart attack?”
Jack shook
his head. “No. Mostly I came… Because of the plantation.”
Terence
groaned. “Oh finally, finally… I am having such a hard time because of your
land… Angus McMillan, your neighbour, always tries to talk me into declaring
you dead so that he can put his hand on the plantation… He wants it as long as
I can remember, offered me lots of money… His daughter married a few years ago
and they would love to move there. I hope you don´t mind – to keep him at least
a bit silent I rented out your meadow and stables for him, for his horse
breeding…”
Jack was
silent for a while. Looked up and smiled. “He can have it. I want to sell it.”
Terence
gasped. “Really!”
He was not
only a talented lawyer but also a good businessman. A few minutes later he
organised an errand boy who brought a dispatch to Angus McMillan´s house. They
did not have to wait long for a reply, half an hour later the boy came back,
panting, saying that McMillan would arrive soon.
Will stood
up, put his hand on Jack´s shoulder. “I´ll leave you alone so that you can talk
a bit about old times… And I think…” He did not know how to say it – he just
had the feeling that the negotiations were something that Jack should do in
private with McMillan and the lawyer.
Jack
nodded, smiled. He understood. “Why don´t you just take a walk, look a bit
after the horse… And we meet downstairs in about, let´s say, two hours…”
Will squeezed
his shoulder. “Right…”
He wandered
around in the beautiful little town but could hardly concentrate on what he
saw. In his mind he was with Jack, hoping that everything would go as they had
planned…
He stood
outside the lawyer´s house, stroking the horse´s nose when Jack came out,
Terence and an elderly, distinguished looking man at his side. And by the way
they smiled, shook hands, Will saw that indeed the negotiations had been
successful.
Jack
climbed onto the carriage. “Come”, he said quietly. “Let´s drive a bit away so
that we can talk.”
A few miles
outside of Hopewell he stopped that carriage at a small road under a willow.
Took a deep breath, looked around. No one else was there. Then he took Will´s
face between his hands, kissed him.
“I did it…”
Will looked
at him with large eyes.
“And… You
don´t regret it? You are happy?”
Jack
nodded. “Yes… Finally I can leave the past completely behind. McMillan´s
daughter and her husband will take over the plantation, move in, and surely soon
a family will fill the house with life, with laughter, with kids… That´s a good
thing. And we have now…” he shook his head in disbelief. “We have so much
money, Will, we could buy three ships now…”
Will stared
at him. “The house was worth so much?”
“Not so
much the house, but the land that belongs to it. It is a lot.”
Will
caressed his hand. “And you don´t want to go there? Take a last look?”
Jack shook
his head. “I don´t think so.” He kissed Will´s hand. “It´s getting late. We
should drive back to the town and look for a nice hotel.” He laughed. “A cheap
one, as long as we don´t have at least some of the money in our hands.”
They turned
the carriage around, following the road to Hopewell. Jack was silent. But when
they were nearly there, he stopped the horse.
“You´re
right. Come. One last look.”
It was a
long and winding road until they had reached it. The abandoned plantation
looked ghostly in the light of the full moon. It was an impressive white house
with many columns, a wide porch, surrounded by huge old trees.
Jack put
his head on Will´s shoulder. “So strange to be here again…” he whispered.
Will held
his hand. “You want to go inside?”
“No…”
His `No´
had been a firm one, and Will was now sure that coming here was the right
decision. But that it was not necessary for Jack to go inside.
“No, Will…
Not all my memories are bad ones. I also have happy memories of this place. But
to go inside now, where everything will surely be dusty… And changed… I want to
keep it in my memory as it was all the years ago.”
Their horse
snorted faintly and then they heard it, too – from one of the stables came the
faint sound of whinnying horses. Jack laughed. “Ah yes, we are not alone… I
forgot that McMillan has his horses here…”
They walked
over to the stables, looked inside. About five of the boxes were occupied by
beautiful horses, a huge pile of hay filled a separated area. It was warm and
peaceful there.
Will turned
around. “What do you think… Would someone mind? We could just stay here
overnight… Put the blankets from the carriage on the hay… And our horse would
have some company, too…”
Jack looked
around. “I am sure nobody will come here tonight, so yes… Why not…” He bent
forward, kissed Will´s neck. “I would not mind spending some time with you… In
the hay…” he mumbled.
Will
chuckled. “I knew you would say that…”
They had
lit some of the hand lanterns that were hanging at the stables, had put the
blankets on the hey. Now they were lying close to each other, hugging and
kissing. Jack´s hand wandered under Will´s shirt, caressing his skin.
“Don’t
worry, from tomorrow on we can afford a better hotel…” he whispered.
Will
stretched in his arms. His hand moved down to Jack´s pants. “I don´t want a
better hotel… It´s wonderful here…” He licked Jack´s earlobe. “By the way –
what´s your name now? Sparrow?
De la Montez? Wentworth?”
Jack
chuckled. “Wentworth is my family name. My father´s name. But I think I´ll keep
to de la Montez now.”
He opened
the buttons of Will´s shirt. “Come…”
Piece after
piece of their clothing was thrown aside and soon they both were naked, kissing
and stroking. “It must have been a trying day for you…” Will mumbled. “So I think
you might like this…” He rolled over to his bag, reached inside and pulled a
small bottle from it. Jack recognised it at once. “You naughty boy, you stole
the oil from our bathroom…” Will smiled. “Borrowed it… I´ll put it back when we
are at the hotel again…” He kissed Jack´s ear. “How about a massage…?” he
whispered. “Turn around…”
Jack´s eyes
were gleaming in the flickering light. “Yeah… I could need that…” he whispered.
He was
lying face down on the soft blanket while Will straddled his thighs, warmed the
oil in his hands and began to spread it on Jack´s back. Slowly and gently he
massaged it into his skin, caressing his shoulders, his back, his arms. Jack
sighed. “Oh this is wonderful…”
He closed
his eyes and simply enjoyed the touches and the kisses Will placed on the back
of his neck.
Will took a
deep breath. The scented oil made him feel dizzy, the feeling of Jack´s body
under his hands excited him more and more. He let his fingers run up and down his
back, then moved his hands a bit lower. He took more oil, caressed the firm
buttocks. Jack moaned silently.
Will´s
heart was beating fast when he let his finger follow the line of Jack´s spine
down… Further down… He dared to move it between Jack´s buttocks until he felt
the tight opening… When he touched it, Jack´s body trembled.
“Will…” he
whispered.
Will bent
forward until his lips touched Jack´s cheek. “Yes…”
Jack turned
his head. His eyes were nearly black, showing arousal, but also vulnerability.
“It is
easy, Will…” he whispered. “Just do it… If you want to. You won´t hurt me…”
Will
swallowed hard. “I have never…”
Jack
smiled. “I know… Don´t be afraid… Just do it the way that you think feels
good…”
Will´s
heart was pounding fast inside his chest now. He took more oil, coated his hard
erection. He felt how Jack relaxed under his hands, then he heard him whisper
his name again.
“Will…”
“Yes…”
Jack took
his hand, kissed it.
“Just do it
slow…” he whispered. “I want to savour… Every moment…”
Then he opened
his legs, let Will move between them. With trembling lips Will leant forward,
put the tip of his cock between Jack´s buttocks. Hesitantly he pushed slightly
forward. His head was spinning from the unfamiliar, exciting feeling. “I am
still afraid to hurt you…” he whispered.
Jack shook
his head. He squeezed Will´s hand. “I told you… You won´t hurt me… And even if
you would… I would love it…”
He sighed with
pleasure when Will pushed deeper. Will sensed that something very special was
happening. Special for both of them. A wave of love and lust ran through him
when he took Jack deeper. It was an exciting feeling, and when he finally dared
to move, pull back and push in again, it was nearly too much for him. And he
found out that Jack was right. He remembered how Jack had made love to him,
remembered what had felt good and right, and just did the same.
He
pleasured Jack slowly, kissing the back of his neck, kissing his shoulders, his
face. Jack´s eyelids were fluttering. “You are wonderful, Will…” he whispered.
“Don´t stop… Feels wonderful…”
Will´s
heart felt like it would burst with love. He pressed his body closer to Jack´s,
continued to make love to him.
Then he
breathed in deeply, moaned. “I´m… Coming…” He let his free hand slid under
Jack´s body, and in the moment he touched him he felt his hand get warm and
wet. He trembled. “Oh Jack…” and then he came, too.
Wrapped in
the warm blanket, still overwhelmed by what had happened, they laid together in
the soft hay. Jack caressed Will´s face with his fingertips.
“I think I
have to tell you something”, he said softly. “You remember, when I told you
about Jonathan… The first man who made love to me.” Will bent forward, kissed
him. He pulled Jack tighter into his arms. “Of course… I remember every single
word…”
Jack took a
deep breath. “After he died… Later, there were others. Other men. I was with
them for months, sometimes only weeks…” he laughed. “Sometimes only hours. And
whatever they did with me, or I did with them…”
He looked into
Will´s eyes. “In all the years I let never anyone of them take me the way
Jonathan did. Never. Until tonight.”
Will stared
at him with wide eyes. “Why… Didn´t you stop me…”
Jack
smiled. “Because I wanted you to do it…
I wanted to feel you… Inside of me… Because I love you… I love you so
much…”
Their lips
met in a long, tender kiss.
It was late
at night when they finally fell asleep in each others arms.
