Chapter Seventeen
They Are Returning
The comm link went dead as I said farewell to my younger brother, Thaiden. He had just let me know that he was in danger along with a few others. He had run into his two students, Tox and Boedog, on their way back from their hunt but, there was a problem. A Bad Blood had taken over the large hunting ship, killing everyone else. He was planning on taking my brother's ship and running, as far as he knew.Even though it was bad news I was happy everyone I cared about was alive; the mention of a Bad Blood brought up mixed feelings of hatred, rage and curiosity. Being an Arbiter for most of my life meant with dealing with Bad Bloods and every time I encountered one after my mate's death I always wondered if they were the ones that did it.
Quickly I contacted my two daughters to get my fastest ship ready. They were stationed at the orbiting space station. My eldest, Ti'nai, wanted to be an Arbiter someday like I was and there was no better chance for her to put what she learned so far into practice. Leen'a, daughter of my deceased mate, was just an extra set of hands I knew I was going to need.
"Tobias," I barked into my wrist comm. "Meet me in the med room, start to gather supplies for burns and lacerations," I said in my tongue. He was a human but had been living in my brother's pyramid for several of his years. He knew my language well enough but I didn't want him to know I could speak his. It was just part of what I was, I couldn't 'spoil' myself to speak his language because he was a prey item.
A prey item that came in very handy on several occasions. Never did I think of him as prey but it was customary for Matrons to not dwell with lower statuses than her own. I made an exception, though, so that I could have an established place along side my brother.
"Mind telling me what's going on?" the small human asked me in his tongue. I had had no time to tell him anything, only that he needed to gather as many medical supplies as he could, including all of the blood he had packaged for emergencies.
"Thaiden is returning with Tox'ru and Boedog. My brother has found another human but the situation is complicated."
"How?" he asked, suddenly frozen and stunned.
"It is not the human, there is a Bad Blood aboard the clan ship and he plans on taking Thaiden's ship and running. I expect injuries if not casualties," I told him then picked him up and put him on my shoulder. He had already gathered the supplies but he was too small to carry them all. I, on the other hand, was nearly twice his height and much stronger. It only took a few moments to gather everything and head down to where my ship was waiting.
"Status," I asked my daughters as I set Tobias down in a seat near the back.
"Ready to go," Leen'a responded and fired up the engines. I took the head of the ship and punched in an estimate of the coordinates. I knew where the last transmission came from but they were most likely moving and if not I knew exactly where they were.
I waited until after we were in space and cruising at top speed to turn around and explain the situation to everyone.
"This is very serious," I told them, "I don't know what is going on over there but, there is a Bad Blood and he is dangerous. Thor'nak's ship held forty-eight hunters, himself and a doctor. All but Tox'ru, Boedog and the Bad Blood remain."
"Why didn't they do anything?" Ti'nai snapped suddenly. Her passion was great but hardly held in check by anything.
"Circumstances," I said guessing. "Thor'nak was very old, past his hunting prime. Even as wise and experienced as he was he could have overlooked the whole thing in favor of finding himself and honorable death."
My brother's old friend was the traditional sort and he was older than even I was. His time was short and he was not long for our world much longer. I numbered his days when he set out on the hunt expecting him to not return. The fact that he was blinded by his need for an honorable death did not surprise me but I will still upset. I at least thought he would have kept all the hunters safe.
"What ever has happened our boys have survived this long, lets get them home safely."
"What about the human?" Tobias chimed in from the back. We all turned our eyes on him making him shrink back.
"I know nothing other than there is one," I said with a shrug.
"Male or female?" he asked with a hint of desperation but I wasn't sure if I wanted to tell him.
"Thaiden said 'female'," I responded then watched as he tensed. We all knew that he and Boedog were a couple. Bringing a female back would cause him great tension, especially if she found him attractive.
"The others are fine, as far as I know," I said answering his next question before he asked it. He nodded settling back for the long ride. I didn't bother mentioning that Thaiden was injured because I didn't want to worry anyone. He looked a little worse for wear when he called but he was stable and active.
I took the time to make several plans for different scenarios. If the Bad Blood saw us coming then we'd have a fire fight on our hands. My hope was that Boedog or Tox was piloting the large ship instead so we could slip in undetected.
"Coming into range," Leen'a said as her fingers danced over the controls. I double checked them and found only the large clan ship. It hadn't been very long since we left and our ship was fast.
"They must have docked Thaiden's ship," I said to everyone and received nods.
Hailing the ship was a risky move so I waited until we were right up next to her. If the Bad Blood was at the helm he didn't make any indication that he saw us.
"Incoming hail," Ti'nai said just as I was about to send my own.
Bringing it up I was greeted with seeing Boedog looking relieved.
"Hurry and dock, Beira is in the meat locker with Thaiden and Tox."
"Will do, I will send Leen'a up to pilot the ship once we are aboard."
"Acknowledged," he said then cut the transmission.
Quickly and deftly I docked our ship in the belly of the clan ship then decompressed and opened the doors.
"Take Tobias to the med room on your way to the bridge," I told Leen'a and she nodded before gathering all of the supplies and heading out, Tobias jogging after her.
"You're with me, stay back just in case things don't go in my favor," I told Ti'nai as we headed for the meat locker. It was a fitting place for the Bad Blood to be, he most likely had Thaiden chained up there and was torturing the human girl if he hadn't killed her already.
Coming upon the door deep within the bowels of the ship I paused and listened. There was a crack of a whip then the noise stopped. I overrode the lock on the door and strode in, Ti'nai waiting behind. The Bad Blood, Beira, had just drawn a knife, the human girl was dangling from his other hand.
Just as he was about to thrust the weapon forward I grabbed his arm and bent it sharply and far enough back to break it in one smooth motion. He dropped the girl allowing me to take hold of his belt and hurl him into the nearest wall, his body leaving a dent before falling unconscious to the floor.
Ti'nai rushed past me to get to Tox'ru and unchain him from the wall without my asking her. She was fond of the large male, having a 'crush' on him ever since they had met. Tox'ru didn't know it, though, as much as I wanted him to, because I believed they were a good fit. His calm demeanor could even out my daughter's great and sometimes blinding passion.
"I'm cold," the human girl said from the floor causing me to look down at her. Tox'ru quickly crawled to her and gathered her into his arms. I helped him to stand then took the girl from his arms.
"He's yours," I said before quickly leaving the room and heading to the medical facility. I knew Ti'nai would help my brother and that he would want me to help his new charge. The girl was bleeding badly from giant lacerations on her back, her face was a mess and she was unconscious by the time I was in the hallway.
"Tobias," I said urgently to my wrist comm, "make sure you have a transfusion kit ready to go, the girl has suffered heavy damage. Get bandages and the staple gun. Make sure there is a bed ready for her when I get there."
"Acknowledged," he said shakily before I broke into a run. The old, run down ship had the same classic configuration as what my parents had owned making it easy to find my way. The halls were eerily familiar as my feet carried me to my destination threatening to bring back memories and get me distracted.
Making it through the door I saw Tobias, bandages in hand standing next to a bed that looked far too tall for him. "Get blood going right away," I said putting on my mask so I could scan her. I set her down on her stomach and got a good look at all the cuts. There were dozens but none were deep enough to do any permanent damage to her spine. I wasn't a genius when it came to first aide but I knew enough to try and stop the bleeding first.
Quickly I packed her back then turned her over so Tobias could fit her with an IV. My hands were much too large for any other task and I regretted having to dictate to him.
"Help me stop the bleeding," I said and he did, face drawn and ill looking. He took several bandages and pressed them to her face before handing me more to pack on her leg. It seemed like hours as blood leaked out of her just as fast as it went in.
"Where is she?!" rang loudly into one ear as Tox'ru shouted.
"She's in the med room, condition critical," I answered. "She has dozens of lacerations on her back, a large gash on her leg and her left arm was almost torn off." Tobias looked even more sickly as I described the girl's situation and even took a few steps back to catch his breath.
"Pack her back with bandages and let her rest on them, her weight will keep the pressure it needs. Wrap her arm tightly with a splint then stop the bleeding on her leg. Did you bring the staple gun?"
"Yes."
"Hold her skin together and have Tobias use it once the bleeding has stopped, I'm on my way." The comm went dead as I looked to Tobias. He didn't look well, bent over with his hands on his knees.
"I'm sorry, Tobias, but I need your help," I said taking up two small pieces of metal. He looked very reluctant but there was no one else in the room that could help me.
"Unwrap her arm to check to see if the bleeding as stopped," I instructed and he did so. The bleeding hadn't completely stopped but it looked good enough to close. Gently I set the splints on the girl's leg then took up her arm and held the skin together.
"Staple around the wound," I told him urgently but his hands started to shake.
"Focus," I told him quietly but he remained still.
"Mei-hswei!" Boedog called distracting Tobias from his task. The human male nearly ran to his partner and threw a hug around him.
"Not now," I growled at them getting their attention. "He needs to staple her wounds closed," I told Boedog and nodded them both over to the table. Boedog gently cooed to Tobias easing him through his reluctance to help me, though when he did start to staple it was erratic and sloppy.
I didn't really care if it was sloppy, if it held then it was good. We moved to her leg once he was done and he stapled it, doing a much better job.
All of a sudden Boedog jerked to her torso and started to look panicked. I finally noticed what was wrong when he yelled, "Heart's fading!"
"Charge," Tox'ru grunted urgently coming into the room. He limped heavily to her side as Boedog rummaged around for the defibrillator pads. "Lowest setting," he told his comrade then stepped back once the pads were on. "Clear!" he shouted and we all leaned back as the girl jerked upwards with the shock.
"Next setting," Tox'ru said quickly when there was no response. "Clear!"
"Still no response," Boedog said, panic just on the edge of his voice.
Tox'ru suddenly leaned over the table so he was close to the girl's face. "Fight!" he growled low at her. "You're a warrior so fight! Clear!" he shouted again and when her body settled for the last time there was a faint heart beat and a small gasp for air.
Once Tobias heard that gasp he fell back immediately to a table across the room. I decided to join him knowing that he felt awful. He looked very ill, worried and stressed. Blood covered his hands but the staple gun rested at the foot of the large bed. I could tell he wanted to be anywhere except where he was.
I put a hand on his back and started to purr to him. It certainly wasn't a good first impression on the girl's part to be introduced to Tobias. She had died right before his eyes, her blood covered his hands and she still had a long way to go before she would recover from her injuries.
Without saying anything I lifted the poor male onto the bed to relax and got a bowl of water to clean his hands off in. Over the last several months Tobias had grown on me considerably. I liked him very much and found his company, even if he was silent, very pleasant. It helped that he had a sense of humor and wasn't afraid of me, which was very refreshing. Seeing him in the state of shock that he was made my heart ache for him.
"Help me with him," Ti'nai said coming into the room. Thaiden was draped over one of her shoulders, limping badly and bleeding in several areas. Without a second thought I went over and took him up in my arms and carried him to a bed where I eased him onto it.
"Is she alright?" he asked Tox'ru. I looked back to see him come to my side.
"She is stable, for now. She needs blood, fluids and needs to be monitored. If she pulls through the next several hours she should be fine."
My brother nodded and clasped his student's shoulder before leaning back. "Thank you," he said full of gratitude. Tox'ru nodded then headed back over to the girl. His limp was definitely heavy and his knee had swollen from a blunt trauma. I watched as he finally looked at her face and saw the bandage across her nose.
"Forget to tell me something?" he asked Tobias. The human sat up and looked at the girl, the bandage on her face had been removed and her face was a mess.
"Oh, shit, yeah, sorry," he said getting off the bed and heading over. I got to witness just how ill Tobias felt when Boedog grabbed a receptacle and went to his partner letting the small male empty his stomach into it. Boedog cooed and rubbed Tobias's back until he could get him on the bed again then I returned my attention to my brother.
He looked at me with hard, determined eyes. I took my mask off and gave him a relaxed smile. I wasn't going to do anything to anyone, yet. I was planning on interrogating everyone after we had returned home to let some of the shock wear off. There was a plethora of data that the clan ship held, anyways, and would keep me busy until we returned.
"You've seen better days," I said quietly to him. Ti'nai was busy watching the others work to repair some of the damage done to the girl, ignoring everything else.
"I've felt better," he answered sadly. He deflated entirely, closing his eyes and sighing heavily. I could see the weight of the small girl's fate on his shoulders. Thaiden had a tendency to be too soft when it came girls; he had always wanted a daughter of his own but had only had sons from all of his many wives. It was considered fortunate to have so many sons but he gravitated toward my daughter more and more when he realized that his latest and youngest wife wasn't going to bear him a daughter, either. Ti'nai indulged him whenever she could but more often than not she was somewhere else to avoid the attention.
"She will live, brother," I told him and put a hand on his shoulder. He only nodded to me before closing his eyes.
"Ti'nai," I said gently, snapping her out of her daze. "Go help Leen'a with the ship, I'm sure she could use it." She gave me a slight nod before leaving, casting one last glace at Tox'ru.
I took a seat next to my brother's bed waiting for the two males to complete their work. With such extensive damage I was surprised the girl had survived, even if it had been just barely. She was, so far, resilient, a good trait to help her in her knew life on Ru-ut'telta with my brother and his students.
When they finally finished patching the girl up I watched as Tox'ru hobbled to a bed then hopped on it. His knee looked worse than it had before and he wasn't about to tend to it. I could see just how exhausted he and Boedog really were so I took it upon myself to tend to him.
"Let me take a look at that," I said going to him.
"I'm fine," he said gently laying back.
"It's the size of your head," I said flatly and left him to get a syringe of an anti-inflammatory medication. When I came back he held still as I stuck the need into his knee and pulled it out.
"There, that should help." I patted his leg satisfied that the swelling would go down and he would be able to walk normally in a few hours.
"Who's flying the ship?" he asked suddenly. I was already back at Thaiden's bed looking over his latest injuries.
"Leen'a is," I said over my shoulder then bent down to look at barely healed burned skin on his leg. The wound was rather severe and it made me wonder how he tended to himself with a human running around on his ship.
"We should arrive at the station in a few hours," Ti'nai reported coming back into the room. The clan ship was much slower than the one we had taken from the planet. I turned to glance at her and everyone else. They all looked very, very tired and needed to rest until we got back, the trip would do them good.
"I want a full report from everyone," I said turning to the males. I received nods then headed out with Ti'nai to help pilot the ship and let the others rest.
The trip back made me fraught with concern. Thaiden had brought back another human making two too many but, it was his call. I knew he wanted to use them as teaching tools for his school, to build more culture and tolerance among the young people. I was in favor of it even though some of my old traditional ways didn't agree with him. My daughters needed to be well rounded, especially Ti'nai, if they were going to make it in the universe. Our society had become mostly stagnant and needed individuals to start working toward a better future. Thaiden's school was the first step in the right direction and my two daughters would be among his first set of actual students. My hope was that they would be able to make our lives better and to lessen the numbers of those who wanted to cause trouble.
Before the memories of my deceased mate plagued me I pushed the thoughts aside and focused on getting us back in one piece.
