Chapter 17
-oOo- The concussion should have been loud, but it was oddly muffled by the strange air. Both Regis and Danilo were tumbled to the ground by the shock, Regis' communicator flying from his hand. Catriona alone was unaffected, her eyes shut as hot debris showered towards them. Burning metallic fragments struck the laran shield she had raised above their heads and disintegrated into atom-sized fragments. “You've been wanting to do that, haven't you?” said Regis as he scrambled after the communicator. “Remind me never to vex the Hali'iym,” Danilo gasped. “Look! There's another ship! It's heading for the tower! Catriona!” “We will destroy it the same way,” she replied, her voice reflecting Ysabet's briskness instead of her own. -oOo- Counts of Serenno did not gulp. Especially ones who had taken the precaution of using Force Illusion on their own ships, appearing to be no more than a windy patch of air. However, not even Tyranus possessed the skill to extend the illusion to his escorts, one of which was now hot shrapnel on the Darkovan landscape. “Fire at the tower!” he stormed at the droid pilot of Red Two. “Land immediately,” he shrilled at his own pilot. “Release grapple droids the instant we're down!” The Tulak Hord plunged. Captain Norbaoth was a good pilot, for he dropped the interceptor behind a copse of trees to give them cover, and only slowed when he had to, the last hundred feet. The counterthrust was so forceful it sat Tyranus down on the deck as they braked. While the Sith lord was getting to his feet again, the lower hatch thumped to the scorched grass and the deployment of grapple droideka clambered down the ramp, their three legs tramping in a manner Tyranus thought painfully slow for their current situation. But once down they balled themselves up and rolled through the trees. Tyranus' pleasure was short-lived. The uneven turf overcame the droidekas' gyroscopes and they kept flopping over. “Why haven't you invented pavement, you cretinous bumpkins! Droidekas, switch to march step, maximum speed.” Cursing, Tyranus raised Inculcare on his wristlink, because he had the bad feeling he was going to be down to one ship soon, or none. Inculcare did not give Tyranus time for a salutation. “Are you in over your head already? If my eyes are not mistaken, that burning on the horizon is—excuse me, was--one of our TIE fighters. What did you do? Or rather, what didn't you do? You remembered your orders to assault the tower, correct?” A distant, ominous boom interrupted them. Both men paused to listen. /Blast and damn,/ thought Tyranus. The flash through the Tulak Hord's windows wasn't the happy disintegrative crunch of rock being blown to pieces by a turbolaser. It was a ship's engines detonating. “I see another fireball,” Inculcare remarked. “I presume that was your other escort going up. Can't you take out a primitive piece of stonework without losing an entire fleet? Very well, we're coming to join you. The Ragnos will show you how to level an enemy properly.” -oOo-While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error. The AFF system includes a rigorous and complex abuse control system in order to prevent improper use of the AFF service, and we hope that its deployment indicates a good-faith effort to eliminate any illegal material on the site in a fair and unbiased manner. This abuse control system is run in accordance with the strict guidelines specified above.
