Warren snapped into awareness suddenly, bolting upright with a gasp. A hand came in almost instantly to capture the back of his neck.
"Woah! Calm down. You're okay, you're fine."
The voice was about all that kept him from striking at the touch. Crystal was there then. Slumping, he did not bother trying to focus as he sagged back onto the cot. Yes, he could figure out where he was due to the faint medical scent and the fact Nurse Spex was talking in another room. The hand left his neck and he felt fingers brushing across his face, flicking hair aside.
"Hey, you all right in there?"
He opened his eyes slowly, blinking until the faint blurriness was gone. Crystal was sitting on a plastic chair beside the cot and looked a little worried. Nodding, he took a slow, deep breath and released it again.
"Yeah, fine. Little light-headed is all."
Nodding, she drew back and rose. He caught her wrist before she could move away. For some reason, he did not want her to go. She turned back and looked at him before smiling.
"Relax. Just going to get you something to drink. Sounds like your throat is pretty dry."
She was right. A little reluctantly, and rather embarrassed that he had grabbed her, he let her arm go. Crystal just turned away and moved to the door. Letting his head fall back onto the pillow, he stared at the ceiling and tried to remember just what had happened. It was all blurry.
"Nurse Spex said that once the light-headed feeling has passed, you can go. There's nothing else wrong."
"Crystal...just...what happened?"
He took the cup of water she offered him and pushed himself up a little to sip at it. She was right, his throat had been dry and a bit sore.
"Well, Speed caught you in a vortex...I'm pretty sure you remember that. I saw it just when Lash managed to throw me into the car. I got free and tried to get to you. Lash got in my way. I saw you fall and...I kinda lost it. I just remember wanting to get to you. Next thing I know, Lash was on the other side of the gym under the car, I could see you begin to breathe again. Then I wanted Speed. I was suddenly there and he was flying. I barely remembered that the goal was to get the Citizen."
She looked down and he saw her twisting the Sky High class ring she wore on her right hand.
"I was scared when I saw you on the floor. I saw your mouth moving...and I could read what you were saying. Gave me a real scare."
Before Warren could think to say anything, the pillow was ripped out from under his head and he was smacked hard by it. Yelping in surprise, he pushed himself back up to stare at her. Her eyes remained worried but there was a little smile on her lips.
"You ever do that again and I'll kill you."
Tension was eased a little as he smiled. She gave him the pillow back and he drank a little more.
"Um, what happened to Speed anyway?"
"Nurse Spex is working on him. He got a little scraped up from the spikes but nothing serious. Lash is being un-knotted later."
Remembering something, Warren pushed himself up and swung his legs over the edge of the bed to face her. Crystal looked at him as he leaned forward and reached out to almost hesitantly turn her head to the side. Sure enough, there was the cut. It had scabbed over. Frowning, he lightly trailed the length with his thumb. A slight twitch of her eye told him enough.
"Was that Lash?"
"Yeah, from the car. No big deal though, I heal fast. In a few days there won't be a mark."
Lowering his hand, he nodded once. The room wavered but at least it did not spin again. Closing his eyes he just let everything go still and settle. He sensed Crystal leaning closer more than anything else.
"So, Firestarter, one of your powers is regeneration."
"What?"
She met his eyes and smiled. "Trust me, I caught you in the arena and I pulled your padding off to make sure you could breathe easier. You had a busted rib. It was healed before we got you here because I felt it."
He hesitated before nodding.
"You're lucky really. Don't worry, I won't be announcing it. If no one else has figured it out by now then why try to enlighten their weak minds?"
Rising once more, Crystal glanced at him before offering one hand. He accepted rather easily and used it to stand. His legs were still a bit unsteady and his balance was off. Still, he could make it. Warren started to say something else when his arm was drawn across her shoulders and hers slipped around his waist.
"Don't argue."
Well, he had not been about to argue...maybe protest. But having her pressed so close changed his mind about that. And maybe he did need the support just to get his bearings again. Moving with her was easy actually. She helped him into the nurse's office and gave a shout to Nurse Spex that they were leaving. Even if he did not accept help often, he supposed that this sort was not all that bad.
"So..."
She looked at him.
"...a cyclone...to counteract a vortex."
"It worked didn't it? Sure the effects kinda busted the gym up but it'll be fixed by next week."
Warren smirked and fell silent for a moment. Glancing at a clock in passing, he saw that it was half past five. He had been out that long?
"Um, we missed the busses."
"Don't worry about it."
By the time they got to the lockers, he had gotten his equilibrium back. She left him there to head down the hall a little and reach her own locker. In a few moments, they both had their bags--Crystal had apparently gotten a list of the assignments from their teachers for Warren--and were headed toward the front doors. The place was empty and it seemed a bit unnerving from what he was used to.
"Here, you'll want to put your pack completely on your back."
Regarding her for a moment, he saw that she had already slid her free arm into the hanging strep of her pack. After a moment, he did the same. Following her to the strip where the busses landed and took off, he wondered just what she was planning. Stopping on the pavement, she glanced back and extended her hand. He took it.
"Whatever you do, I suggest you hang on."
Warren had no time to ask before he was being pulled along with her into a run. The wind suddenly picked up as they raced to the edge. Crystal leapt...and he followed. Suddenly the wind was there and grabbed him, almost tearing him away from her. Squeezing her hand harder, he struggled for a moment. The pull eased then vanished as the wind spun around them in the now-familiar cyclone.
Crystal's laugh came to his ears and she turned her head to look at him, glasses gone. He used his arm to pull himself up closer beside her and adjust his grip so that he was holding her wrist and she had ahold of his. Looking around, he glanced up to see the school already a shrinking dot in the sky. Glancing down, his breath left him at the view. They fell through the clouds at what felt like an uncontrolled speed.
"You asked me if I ever flew!"
The laughter rang out again and suddenly he found himself joining her as he realized she was not just falling, they were both flying down to the ground. His hair whipped around his head but never into his face. Just like her ponytail was whipping and dancing. No wonder she never wore her hair down if this was how she came and left school! But the exhilaration of falling was too much to let him think of such things for long.
It ended far too soon for him. The thrill, the pure and simple freedom of the flight was very addictive. Granted, he could now see why she had such a passion for flying a jet. They had hardly been going that fast. At least with a fighter there was something that helped to keep the wind from burning skin and deafening ears. Crystal had kept enough control of the wind he could still hear but his skin was tingling with cold and the rush of wind. They landed lightly in his back yard.
"Wow."
"Yep. Now you know why I don't take the bus."
She released his numbed hand to push stray strands of hair out of her face. Even tied back, the wind had torn a lot free of the band. He would likely find any number of tangles in his own hair. It was worth it though.
"Here's the list of assignments you missed. I'll see you in school tomorrow."
"Sure. And thanks for the ride, Whirlwind."
