Chapter 17 – The calm before the storm
As soon as Ardeth had
left them to meet with the other Med-jai leaders Rick and Alex headed
in the direction of their own hut. The tension of on-coming battle
was almost palpable in the air around them, the whole village filled
with hushed voices and rushed preparations.
Entering the cool
interior of their hut Rick sat down on his
bed, a weary sigh escaping his lips. He knew that their chances in
the battle were better now that they had Sekmet's blessing, but he
was still worried for his loved ones. Especially for Alex and Ardeth,
although he also wanted Jonathan to be save. As annoying as his
former brother-in-law could be he was still a good person at heart.
Rick was shaken out of
his gloomy musings when the bed shifted next to him and Alex placed a
hand on his shoulder, speaking up. “I think it will be okay,
dad. The Med-jai already defeated the army of Anubis and I'm sure
that they will win again.”
Looking up at his son
Rick spotted hope and certainty in his eyes, but also a maturity that
was far greater than what a boy his age should possess.
Alex had already seen and experienced too much, loosing not only his
mother but also a lot of his childish ignorance.
And now he was not only
faced with danger once again, but also had
to come to terms with the fact that his father had decided to be with
a man. There had to be some anger or resentment on Alex's part that
Rick was certain of, since he believed that he would have been angry
with his parents if they had caused so much chaos in his life. Not
than being completely abandoned by them had been much better, but at
least they had never involuntarily put him into danger.
Feeling the need to
clear things up with Alex before he went to a fight of which he
didn't know the outcome Rick spoke, absentmindedly tousling his son's
hair. “You know, I didn't want you to find out about me and
Ardeth so soon. I wanted to give you a little more time to mourn for
your mom. I...”
He didn't quite know
how to continue, unable to put the changes that had taken place in
his heart while they hunted for the keys to Isis' book into words.
Alex was silent for a while and Rick wondered if Sekmet hadn't been
right with what she had shown him, if his son really resented him for
being with Ardeth.
“It's ok, dad. I still miss
mom and wish that she wasn't dead, but I'm not mad at you for being
with Ardeth. I like him.” It was astonishing how mature his son
thought and behaved, urging Rick to pull him into a tight hug, glad
that his fears hadn't come true. “Dad, you're smothering me!”
The sound of
mock-outrage was quite clear in Alex's voice so Rick let him go, a
slight smile spread over his face. For a short moment he had almost
forgotten the war and what it meant for the next day. But it swiftly
came back when Ardeth entered the hut, the expression on his face
filled with worry.
“Rick, we will leave as soon
as the warriors are ready.” Seeing the puzzled look on his
lover's face the Med-jai quickly explained: “We'll move to a
small hill about an hour's ride from the village.” He didn't
elaborate further, but Rick could read the answer in his eyes anyway.
It'll give them time to run if we fail.
Casting a quick glance
in the direction of his son Rick answered: “I'll be there, just
give me another minute.” The serious expression on Ardeth's
face was replaced by a slight smile for the fraction of a second
before he nodded his head and left the hut again.
Seeing that Alex was
about to speak Rick quickly lifted his hand, motioning his son to pay
attention to what he had to say. “You and Jonathan will stay
behind and there won't be an argument about this. I need to know that
you are relatively save, otherwise I won't be able to concentrate on
fighting.” His tone became even more serious as he continued.
“Alex, if the worst should happen the village will be informed
by a falcon. I want you and Jonathan to lead the women to Cairo. Our
house there is large enough to shelter them for a while and the
Lock-tai won't find you as easily there.”
“But dad...”
“No, I love you Alex, but I
have to go now. Please for once just do as I say. Will you promise it
to me?” Rick could see tears gathering in Alex's eyes as a
whispered “I promise.” fell from his son's lips. Trying
to not show the fear and doubts he harbored himself Rick pressed a
kiss to Alex's forehead before quickly
leaving the hut.

The Med-jai warriors had already gathered in the middle of the
village and although they were impressive in their black robes,
sitting high atop their majestic horses Rick couldn't help but worry
even more when he saw how small their numbers really were. Their
faces were mostly covered by black cloths, but as he walked past them
he saw fear in some of their eyes.
The only one to radiate complete confidence and strength was
Ardeth, his face proud as he waited for his lover to arrive. As soon
as he caught sight of Rick a tender
expression flitted over his face, displaying his whole love for a few
precious seconds.
Walking up to his Med-jai leader Rick mounted the horse that
Ardeth had brought for him. Their eyes locked, speaking without
words, reassuring each other of their love. Rick didn't need to tell
the other man that he was worried, since Ardeth could easily read it
in his gaze, quickly reassuring his beloved. “The Goddess
will help us through this, Rick.”
Rick only hoped that Ardeth was right, his confidence in their
divine ally not quite as strong. But even if he wasn't certain of how
much use it would be he wore the Goddess'
amulet around his neck and if he looked closely enough he saw a small
gold chain glimmer around Ardeth's too.
Raising his hand in the air Ardeth addressed
both his warriors and the women, who had gathered around them,
reassuring them of their save return. And with a shouted order they
were off, riding into the desert, towards a
war that Rick would rather have run from.

It had had taken them about an hour to reach the high sand
dune that Ardeth had chosen as their line of defense.
Swarming out the Med-jai began to set up tents and prepare a small
camp that would shelter them until the next day.
Rick was sitting in front of the tent he shared with his lover,
gazing up at the stars and wondering if the happiness he had acquired
since he had become Ardeth's lover would still be there the next
night. He desperately hoped so, but he also remembered how happy he
had been when Evy had returned from the dead and how swiftly that
happiness had ended.
A strong hand descended on his shoulder as Ardeth's voice shook
him out of his musings. “We should rest, Rick. We'll need our
strength tomorrow.” Nodding
his head Rick accepted the hand that Ardeth offered to get him up off
the ground, letting himself be pulled into a strong, reassuring
embrace. Their lips met in a tender, desperate kiss, yearning
for more and yet knowing that they couldn't, that they needed to save
their strength for the next day.
Both of them lay down on the blanket covered ground inside the
tent, their bodies entwining as close as possible. Pressing another
kiss to Ardeth's lips Rick allowed his tongue to delve inside and
explore the taste he so desperately wanted and needed.
Desire was stirring in his body, even though it wasn't the frantic
passion that he had felt after they had completed their trials, but
rather a calm, lustful need for closeness.
He could feel the same need in Ardeth's body, his awakening erection
pressed against Rick's leg as their tongues tangled together.
Slipping his hands underneath his lover's robes Rick began
stroking his hard cock, drawing a slight moan from Ardeth's lips as
their kiss ended. Their eyes met, communicating need and love and
Rick felt Ardeth's fingers open his trousers and slip inside,
skillfully stroking his erection.
Absolute familiarity with each other brought them closer in that
moment, each knowing what the other needed. Their lips met once
again, their kisses only broken by quick pants for air as their hands
sped up, bringing them closer to relief.
When Rick's orgasm finally swept through him it wasn't the
screaming ecstasy he had so often
enjoyed under Ardeth's ministrations, but rather a deep calm that
spread through his body, luring him into the arms of sleep while he
muttered words of love against Ardeth's shoulder.
