Kayla didn’t think she would go through mood swings or
morning sickness since it was an unusual pregnancy. She experienced everything.
Ga’gan was so patient with her. On days when he felt himself getting angry he
would go spar with his brother. Kul’vir was always ready to spar. Since Stef'na
learned of her pregnancy she refused to have sex with Kul’vir for pleasure.
Kul’vir could tell Ga’gan was having just the opposite problem. Kul’vir never
said anything else to Maha'vin but he did bid farewell to Ne’el. His anger and
pain was deep and the only one he ever talked to about it was Kayla.
“Would you like to go for a walk today?” Ga’gan
encouraged her as Kayla snuggled up to his warm body. “Maybe play with the
children on the ship. For some reason they like being around you.”
“No,” she sighed. “I decided that it wasn’t a wise
decision. When they are ready to hunt they may prefer to walk up to their prey
and start talking.”
Ga’gan laughed at her. “Yes you do have a point, but they’re
still kids. They will learn later.”
“After my nap you can have me if you like.” Kayla felt
on his chest and Ga’gan just sighed. She sighed in return and scooted away from
him. Lately, his usual answer to her advancements was a sigh. Kayla didn’t know
why she even bothered.
“Kayla your sexual appetite is far surpassing my own,”
he never thought he would hear himself saying that out loud. “You are due
anytime now and really, I don’t want to hurt you.” He grazed his mandibles over
her large belly. He could smell her excitement and got out the bed. Kayla
sighed in frustration as he started to get dressed. Kayla turned to look out
the window. As Ga’gan got dressed he wanted to curse at himself, for making her
cry, yet again. Kayla didn’t understand his concern for her pregnancy and he
grew tired of trying to explain.
Ga’gan walked slowly over to her and kneeled down. He
wiped her tears away before he rubbed his cheek with hers. “You’re not
attracted to me any more Ga’gan?”
“Of course I am,” he stood up and looked down at her.
“Maybe you should see Pahel today. We just woke up and you are talking about
napping. I will inform Kul’vir to check on you since he is off today.”
When he left Kayla managed to wake herself up long
enough to take a shower. When she walked out Ga’gan was standing near the
window. She kissed his back softly and he growled. “So you changed your mind?”
“I’m not Ga’gan,” Kul’vir growled as her scent hit his
nose instantly. He cursed at himself for not wearing nose plugs around her
anymore.
“Sorry,” Kayla backed away. Since he work out more
Kul’vir grew quickly. He and Ga’gan were about the same size. Even their locks
were the same length. Kayla didn’t want to offend them, but from the back they
all looked the same. “Normally you don’t come into my sleeping area.”
“Ga’gan told me to check on you,” Kul’vir turned to
look at Kayla. Even with the towel wrapped around her body and her large
stomach sticking out from it she was still extremely attractive. “I was just
looking out the window. We are approaching the end of the Andromeda galaxy.”
Kayla gasped as she looked out the window with him. It
was indeed a beautiful sight. “How often do you go back to your planet,” Kayla
questioned.
“Once a century,” Kul’vir told her. “You will really
like it. It’s very beautiful. Large colorful pyramids and trees taller than you
could ever imagine. One large red sun and a small yellow sun is what our planet
orbits around and two moons. The sky during the day is a lavender color and at
night it’s a deep rich purple. And the gas balls, you can see them just as
clear as your looking at them now. This will be my first visit. I’ve seen many
images of it. You are very fortunate to join us at such a miraculous time.”
“It sounds very beautiful,” she smiled as she thought
of the stories her father told her. He and Kul’vir described the planet exactly
the same way.
“Ga’gan told me the way the sun caresses your skin
softly it makes you yearn for the daylight. That’s why we don’t sleep much. Our
days are much longer than our nights.” Kul’vir moved his mandibles slowly as he
thought about his home world. “We will stay long enough to acquire more
servants, another ship and new weaponry.”
“Then you’re off to fight again,” Kayla sighed as she
laid back down.
“Of course, that’s what we live for,” he growled with
excitement. Over the past few months he and Ga’gan went on short missions
together. Neither one wanting to leave for too long with vulnerable mates on
the ship. Kayla learned to show excitement when Ga’gan returned with heads of
species she never heard of. He knew she was faking, but it tickled him every
time. Kul’vir sat next to Kayla, jarring her away from her thoughts.
“How
is Ne’el?”
He sighed, “Still no word. I am very worried for my
brother.” Kul’vir looked at her and gave her a warning growl before she
mentioned Maha’vin’s name. Kayla took the hint.
“One thing I never expected was for your species to be
so talkative,” she laughed. “You just look like the big silent type.”
“I can be silent,” Kul’vir stared at her. “I can speak
with my body, but you’re not my mate.” He shook her chin softly making her
smile. “Communication brings ideas and intelligence. That brings new
technology. Yes we talk and share ideas often.”
“I’m so sleepy,” Kayla yawned. Kul’vir reached under
the sheet and under her towel. He placed his hand on her stomach. He started to
purr loudly and the baby started to kick in response. Kayla laughed. “Ouch, and
it hurts,” she smiled.
Kul’vir chuckled, “Ga’gan has never done this? I do it
to Stef'na all the time. Your baby kick is really light.”
“He never made the baby move. I didn’t know you could
do that.”
“Are you afraid?” he asked as the baby playfully
kicked at his hand. He pressed on Kayla’s stomach softly so the child wouldn’t
hurt her.
Kayla nodded her head yes. “I’m afraid of what is to
be expected of my baby. What if it looks more ooman than Yautja? If it’s a girl
will she have to fight like I did to be accepted and will he or she be expected
to hunt other ooman’s?”
“I failed to protect you once,” Kul’vir said as he
thought of what Maha’vin done to her. “I will never fail your baby.”
When Kul’vir removed his hand it brushed softly
against her sex. He quickly stood up. “Kayla I’m thinking about taking on a
second mate,” he told her. “I haven’t talked to Stef'na about my decision. I
don’t want her to know until she has the baby.”
“Why?”
“She's driving me insane,” he growled. “I’m starting
to smell you even when you’re not in heat. She refuses to mate with me until
she’s in heat again. Do you know how long that will be?” Kayla shook her head
no. “Almost another year, unless she just happen to take pity upon me.”
“That’s funny,” Kayla yawned. “I’m in heat all the
time and yet Ga’gan seems to be afraid to touch me. I swear it’s like there’s a
tiny piece of seba in my food everyday. I want to
attack him but I don’t have the energy. When I do have enough energy, he tells
me no.”
“Ga’gan and I should switch mates,” he trilled at her.
Kayla eyes closed slowly. “You would be perfect for me
Kul’vir.” He looked at her and tilted his head. She looked like she was asleep
already.
“Speak your words to no one,” he whispered as he
touched her face softly.
Kayla woke up in the medical lab. Kul’vir was holding
her hand. “What happened,” Kayla felt groggy. She noticed a tube in her arm.
Pahel looked her over again running his instruments across her stomach.
“Maybe we should wait for Ga’gan,” Pahel said softly
to Kul’vir.
“What’s wrong with my baby?” Kayla asked frantically.
She tried to sit up and felt dizzy. Kul’vir rubbed her arm softly making her
lie back down.
“Calm down Kayla,” he purred. “You fell asleep and you
wouldn’t wake up.”
“Kayla, the baby is weak,” Pahel said softly. “The
baby will die if you don’t eat more protein. Have you been eating any raw
meat?”
She shook her head no and Kul’vir growled at her. She
quickly looked at him. “I didn’t know it was mandatory. I thought you were
suggesting it.”
“We need meat to grow,” she could tell he was trying
to be patient with her, but he was very angry.
“I have never eaten raw meat,” she said softly. “I can
get sick.” Kul’vir pushed his chair away from her and walked out the room.
“Kayla I’m administering you a protein synthetic to
help the baby,” Pahel said while reading a monitor. “It’s helping but it’s not
enough.” He noticed her pulse rate went up. “Please lie back and rest ok?”
Kayla nodded and closed her eyes. A moment later,
Kul’vir came back with a plate in his hand. Kayla looked at it. To her it
looked like raw steak mixed with raw beef liver. “Eat,” he growled at her.
The smell was disgusting and Kayla felt her stomach
turn. “That will make me sick.”
“A moment of sickness or a dead baby?” he barked at
her. Kayla sat up as he sat in front of her. He held up a piece. “If you get
sick you won’t have to go far,” he tried to joke with her to ease the tension.
Kayla held her breath and opened her mouth. The taste
was worse than she thought. She started to cough but put her hand over her
mouth so she wouldn’t cough up the meat. “You are doing well,” Kul’vir
encouraged her as she ate another piece he held out to her. “In a moment you
will get use to the taste.”
“Never,” she coughed.
“Kayla, are you alright?” Ga’gan rushed in. He looked
at Kul’vir. “What happened?”
Kul’vir explained everything that happened and Kayla
told them both what Pahel told her. “Why weren’t you monitoring her food
intake?” Kul’vir growled at his brother.
“Why are you so concerned about my mate,” Ga’gan said
angrily. Kul’vir stood up. They both stared at one another.
“Someone has to be concerned about her, it’s obvious
you are not,” Kul’vir sat the plate next to Kayla and looked at Ga’gan. “Lately
you have been holding onto a combistick more so than
Kayla!”
Ga’gan roared at him. Usually Kul’vir would walk away
if his brother was really angry, but instead he roared back. Ga’gan didn’t know
what to do. Kul’vir never roared at him in such anger before.
“Please stop,” Kayla said softly. They both looked at
her as she tried to eat another piece of meat. “I think I’m getting sick.”
Pahel came in and looked at her.
“I want you to try something,” he said softly. “Take
the plug out and breathe our air normally.” Kayla changed her plugs once a
month. She tried breathing in their air once and felt like she was suffocating.
Pahel handed her a tissue to blow out her plugs. Kayla breathed in deeply and smiled.
“I’m ok,” she laughed.
“The baby needs to breathe our air,” Pahel explained.
“Since you and the child exchange DNA and blood you should have no problems
breathing now. My only concern is your vomeronasal
organ is now enlarged like ours.” Kayla looked at him but shrugged her
shoulders. “It’s nothing really,” he assured her. “You may be able to smell the
different pheromones. It may go away after the baby is born.”
“Pheromones are odorless,” Kayla said knowingly. She
thought of perfumes, but wasn’t to sure if it had anything to do with it.
“Is that what you think?” Ga’gan chuckled.
“Well it maybe odorless to ooman’s,” Pahel said to
Ga’gan.
She took another deep breath and Ga’gan trilled softly
at her. Kayla reached out her hand and he walked closer to her. She sniffed
softly on his neck. “I can smell you now.”
“Oh?” he tilted his head to the side. “What do I smell
like?”
“Smell like you need a shower,” Kayla smiled.
Ga’gan laughed at her. “Well I just finished sparring.
I will go shower and come back to check on you.” While Ga’gan was walking out
he looked at Kul’vir. He shook his shoulder and nodded. Kul’vir did the same.
Pahel left the room as Kayla ate more meat.
“It’s not so bad anymore,” she admitted. Kayla offered
him some but he shook his head no. “Come here.”
“What do you want,” he pretended to be annoyed with
her as he walked closer.
“I want to smell you too.”
He sighed and chuckled at her as she put her arms
around him and sniffed on his neck. Kul’vir placed his hands on each side of
her and leaned closer. Her smile slowly faded as she pulled him a bit closer.
Kayla closed her eyes and sniffed his shoulders, down to his chest and slowly
back up. His smell was so intense. She took in deep breaths as she smelled on
his neck. Kayla was instantly attracted to him. For a moment she completely
forgot about Ga’gan. Kayla opened her legs slightly and pulled him closer. He
started to growl at her as his mandibles grazed her neck and his arms encircled
her waist. He suddenly backed away from her and looked away. Kayla didn’t know
what to say. She too tried to look away but she found herself starting at him.
“I’m so sorry,” Kayla sputtered. “I don’t know what
happened.”
“Kayla, I can smell you,” he said not looking at her.
“I can smell you too,” she said softly. “Is this how
you feel…”
“Every time I don’t have my nose plugs in,” he
continued for her.
“When was the last time you wore them?”
“The night I first mated, when you told me to remove
them,” he said before leaving the room.
Kayla tried to shake the feeling and his scent. She
slowly ate more of the raw meat.
She had to stay in the medical lab for a few days.
Ga’gan stayed with her. She hadn’t seen Kul’vir since she smelled him. She felt
guilty because for those few days it was all she wanted to smell. Ga’gan
carried her back to their quarters.
“How do I smell now?” he teased softly.
Kayla sniffed his neck. It was an attractive scent but
it wasn’t Kul’vir’s. “You smell very good,” she smiled. “I would say I want to
attack you, but I know that’s out of the question.”
Ga’gan was silent the rest of the way. He gently laid
her down in the bed. “Kayla I don’t…”
“Want to hurt you,” they said in unison.
“You heard Pahel,” Kayla said. “I’m fine. The baby is
healthy now. I’m not falling asleep every hour.” Kayla stood up and looked out
the window. “My goodness Ga’gan I never thought I would have to beg you for it.
I’m in heat. I want to mate. If you can’t help me, maybe you should have
someone else do it.”
“Like my little brother,” he growled at her. “Is that
who you want?”
“Why are you angry?” she questioned looking at him. “I
thought it was ok in your clan to help each other out.”
“When feelings are not exchanged,” he yelled at her.
“My brother is almost ready to kill me for you.”
“No he isn’t,” Kayla shook her head in disbelief.
“Kul’vir just feels like he has an obligation to protect me.”
“His obligations were supposed to end when you and I
mated,” he said angrily.
“I know your appetite,” Kayla sat next to him. “Has
anyone been fulfilling my obligations?”
He turned and looked at her angrily. “Are you accusing
me of mating with someone without your permission? Do I really seem
dishonorable to you?”
“No,” she said softly as she felt guilty for even
thinking such a thing. “Sorry.” Ga’gan shook his head softly and left. Ga’gan
had never walked out on her before. Kayla didn’t know what to do. Ga’gan’s
distance had grown over the weeks.
“Let me guess, you had to save Kayla again,” Stef’na
said sarcastically to Kul’vir. He growled at her before sitting down. They
argued constantly since her pregnancy and Kayla was always the main topic. His
mother told him that mates stay together permanently, but at the moment he
didn’t understand how.
“You used to understand me Stef’na,” he looked at her
as she rubbed her stomach. “You knew of my commitment to ensure her wellbeing
on this ship.”
“She has Ga’gan for that.”
“What happened to you Stef’na?”
“What happened to you Kul’vir,” she growled at him. “I
remember when I used to walk into a room you would look at me and groan. You
always sought after me. I didn’t mind Kayla helping you out when we tried to
conceive, but were feelings exchanged?”
“No Stef'na,” he stood up and walked over to her. His
mandibles moved softly against her neck. Stef'na quickly pushed him away. “I haven’t
seen Kayla in weeks. I was sparring with Ga’gan and trying to find my brother.”
“Still no word?”
“Ga’gan is thinking about going out to find him. He’s
waiting for Kayla to have the baby.”
“Tell him no need to wait she has you.”
Kul’vir growled at her. “Do not talk to me in such a
disrespectful manner.”
“Stop disrespecting me with Kayla!” she roared at him.
“If you want to take on a second mate then fine, but you can’t take one that
has a mate.”
“Feelings we not exchanged!” he yelled at her. “This conversation
is over Stef'na. You are due and I don’t want you to disturb the baby.”
Stef'na grabbed his wrist. Yautja females couldn’t
sense heartbeats and pulses as well as the males can. They can tell when
someone is lying by feeling on their pulse. “Tell me feeling weren’t exchanged
with Kayla.”
Kul’vir stared at her before responding angrily in a
slow, low tone, “Feelings were not exchanged with Kayla.” He snatched his hand
away from her and left.
“You lie,” Stef'na said softly as she felt on her
stomach.
Kul’vir walked to Ga’gan and Kayla’s quarters and
stopped in front of the door. He hadn’t seen Kayla in weeks since she last
smelled on him. He wanted to go to her. He missed talking to someone that truly
listened to him when he felt like talking. He touched the door softly.
“Kul’vir,” Kayla said standing up and walking towards
the door. She looked in the room where he normally surprised her but he wasn’t
there. She walked to the door. Kayla could smell him on the other side. She
closed her eyes and inhaled deeply. His pheromones were rich in the air. Kayla
concluded that the only reason her sense of smell was so strong was because of
the baby. She hadn’t seen Kul’vir in weeks. For days she would find herself
looking in the other room to see if he was there. Kayla missed his friendship.
Even when he went on missions he would call her more than Ga’gan would. For
Ga’gan it was about the hunt. For Kul’vir it was about making sure the females
were safe. She blushed when he told her that one day. For the sake of proving
Ga’gan wrong she backed away from the door.
Kul’vir could smell her from the other side. He
thought it was due to her pregnancy that her scent was so strong. He knew the
state she was in she would be too vulnerable to converse with. Instead he walked
away.
Kayla got dressed and went to see Pahel. “Are you
feeling well?” he questioned as she walked in slowly.
“No I don’t think so,” Kayla sat down. “Do you
understand patient confidentiality?”
Pahel tilted his head to the side and grumbled as he
tried to understand her. “Do you mean can I keep a secret about you?”
“Yes,” she sighed. He nodded yes. “I smell Kul’vir and
I want to attack him. Pahel I could smell him on the other side of my door. Is
this normal?”
He looked at her and laughed. Pahel turned to see
Pa’ram walk in. “Pa’ram you have to hear this,” he laughed. “Kayla had to
remove her plugs for the baby and now for the first time her vomeronasal organ is working.”
He laughed along with Pahel. “You silly ooman,” he
chuckled. “Who is she attracted to?”
“I don’t like being laughed at,” she yelled before
Pahel could open his mouth.
“Ok, ok I will not discuss it with anyone else,” he
chuckled, “Kayla there is a structure that sits in the nose that is linked to
pheromone perception. I’m now assuming ooman’s never had a use for it. That’s
what attracts us to females and vice versa. Though I’m sure yours is now linked
to both species since you are pregnant.”
“So you can smell Pa’ram?” she questioned. Pa’ram
growled at her.
“Males are only attracted to females,” Pahel helped
her up. “There is nothing to be concerned with. What you feel is perfectly
normal.”
“I feel sorry for you though,” Pa’ram butted in. “We
learn to control our scent at a young age. It’s hitting you all at once. You
have to be going crazy.”
“You seem to be enjoying it,” she snapped. Kayla
looked back at Pahel. “Can I put plugs in my nose when I’m around him?” she
questioned softly as he walked her to the door.
“Not good for the baby,” he reminded her. “No worries
Kayla, when you deliver it will go away.”
“Well what do I do in the meanwhile?” she asked as he
turned to go back into the medical lab.
“Avoid him,” he said dryly.
Kayla walked back to the elevators slowly. She
understood why Kul’vir was able to perform better during his ritual. She felt a
little embarrassed because all this time other males were able to smell her.
She never knew it was this strong. The doors started to close but someone
stopped the elevator.
“Kul’vir,” she said before she saw him.
He stared back at her. She started to feel weak and
quickly gripped the rail next to her. “Are you alright Kayla?” He stepped
closer to her but she put her hand up.
“Please stay away from me,” she begged. He stepped
back. “I’m going to wait for the elevator to come back.” She tried to walk past
him but he grabbed her arm and pressed the button for the doors to close. When
it started to move he stopped the elevator.
“I’ve wanted to talk to you for weeks now,” he blurted
as she stepped away from him. “But Stef’na…”
Kayla tried pinching her nose together, but it was too
late. “I smell you and suddenly feel like I’m on seba,”
Kayla said cutting him off. “Ga’gan barely touches me. My body is on fire.” Kayla
couldn’t believe she was admitting all of that to him, but she had to say
something. She thought if he knew maybe he would try to stay away.
Kul’vir touched the side of her face softly, trying to
calm her down. He could feel her pulse racing. She closed her eyes and moved
her face softly against his hand. Kul’vir stepped closer to her and she moaned
softly. He growled at her, “You are still my friend right?”
“Of course,” She said softly sniffing on his chest.
He gently pushed her away. “We need to go see my
mother.” Kayla nodded.
Nam’rah chuckled as Kul’vir explained what was
happening to Kayla. “Her species isn’t used to such powerful aromas,” Nam'rah
touched Kayla’s face to get her attention. She had been glancing at Kul’vir
since they had come to see Nam’rah. She walked her son to the door. “Leave her
with me. I do wish for you to return so we can talk about you and Stef’na...”
“Mother…”
“I know what’s going on,” she growled at him. “You
never take on a mate you can barely smell boy.”
“Kayla did not want me,” he whispered to her. “I asked
her before Stef'na.”
“Kayla smells you for the first time and she’s going
crazy like a female who’s never mated,” Nam’rah snapped. “I know you wore plugs
in your nose out of respect for her but your respect has now gotten you a mate
you seem to not want to be with. Too bad son, deal with it. You will never be
with Kayla.”
“I know.” Nam’rah could see the sudden disappointment
in her son eyes. “Help her mother. I don’t want Ga’gan to be hurt.”
“Ga’gan thinks you want to kill him,” Nam’rah
chuckled.
Kul’vir trilled softly before answering her. “I lost
my perspective for a moment,” he admitted. “But I would never harm my brother
for his mate.”
“Maybe you should tell him this.” Nam'rah touched
cheeks with her son before he left. She walked back over to Kayla and sat next
to her.
Nam’rah walked back over to Kayla. “Your scent is
comforting Nam'rah. It’s so calm and relaxing.”
“All mothers carry this scent for at least a while
after you first have your child,” She told her.
“Of all the males on this big ship I seem to be
smitten with the ones in your family,” Kayla said softly. Nam’rah laughed at
her.
“Your nose is smitten with one and your heart with
another.”
“I care for Ga’gan, Nam’rah,” Kayla said softly. “As
for Maha'vin, well, when someone tries to kill you, you somewhat lose
interest.”
Nam'rah let out a loud laugh. “I will help you control
your scent.”
Ga’gan slowly walked to his quarters. The last thing
he felt like doing was pretending like everything was ok with him and Kayla.
Kul’vir was waiting at Ga’gan’s door. “We need to talk Ga’gan,” he said softly.
“I agree brother.” They shook each others shoulder
softly before walking inside. Kul’vir explained where Kayla was and why. “So
she’s attracted to you?” Ga’gan asked in shock as he sat down slowly. “I, I
thought you had feelings for her.”
“She’s not attracted to me Ga’gan,” he tried to
explain. “I talked to Pahel, she’s attracted to my scent. The same way I was
attracted to hers. There’s no feeling, just a mutual attraction to mate.
Besides, we both seemed to be in heat and neither one of our mates chose to do
anything about it.”
“That’s all?” Ga’gan laughed. “Why didn’t she say
anything?”
“I don’t know, embarrassment I guess. You know how
modest she is.”
Ga’gan leaned back and folded his arms as he looked at
his little brother. “Do you wish to relieve your sexual tension with her?”
Kul’vir shook his head softly, “Of course. She’s
beautiful and her scent is breathtaking. Just like other males on this ship I
would be lying if I said no, but I would never be with Kayla again. Besides,
Stef’na is a little jealous. The only thing I want from Kayla is my friendship
back, but I don’t want that if it consists of my brother being jealous of our
relationship.”
“Not at all Kul’vir,” Ga’gan walked over to Kul'vir
and he stood up. Ga’gan laughed. “Since when did you get tall enough to look at
me eye to eye?”
“When you were too angry to look at me,” Kul'vir
joked. Ga’gan did something he had never done before. He hugged his little
brother. Kul’vir was hesitant but he hugged him back.
“I need a favor from you Kul’vir,” Ga’gan said softly.
Kul'vir stared at him until he continued. “I’m going to go find Ne’el. I want
you to be Kayla’s acting mate until I return…”
“No,” Kul’vir responded without thinking the question
over. “Ask anything else of me but do not ask me that.”
“You’re just down the hall Kul’vir, please,” Ga’gan
pleaded. “I will return shortly.”
“What if she has the baby while you’re gone and then
goes into heat again?” Kul'vir snapped.
“You know the rules,” he reminded him. “You do
whatever it takes to keep our clan strong. Of course I would raise your child
as if it’s my own. I don’t have a problem with that. It’s the challenge I would
have to face if I were to ask someone outside the family to be an acting mate.
I have a problem with that. You know when I return I would be challenged for
her if you don’t uphold this responsibility.”
Kul’vir thought for a moment and shook his head.
“Fine. Just hurry home.”
When Kul’vir left Ga’gan’s room he leaned against the
wall and sighed.
