********** Egon hadn’t felt this miserable since the last time Rebecca Venkman had unexpectedly dashed out of his life. He’d barely slept, opting to get up and work in the lab instead. When the phone rang downstairs he ignored it. Sundays they were closed. After four rings an automated service picked up. When the upstairs phone rang, he was obligated to pick up. Only emergencies or personal calls came through on that line. "Dr. Spengler speaking." He answered, hoping it was something big. He could use the work to take his mind off of the night before. "Dr. Spengler! This is Aiden Reynolds... Mom’s in trouble! Please, you have to get her down!" The teenager’s deep voice trembled and it made him sound far younger. "Down from where? Let me speak with her." Egon replied. "She’s on the ceiling, and I can’t get her to wake up! The whole place is trashed, please, you have to help her!" "I’ll be there as soon as I can. Is there somewhere safe you can go? A neighbor’s maybe?" "I’m not leaving my mom!" "All right, but, if there’s furniture moving, I need you to at least stay out of the room. She has no control over it, and people have been hurt by moving furniture." Egon explained. "I... I’ll wait in the hallway, but I’m not letting her out of my sight." Aiden compromised. "All right, I’m on my way." Egon assured him. As soon as he hung up, he called Ray. By the time he got to Linda’s Ray was waiting for him. "So what exactly is going on?" Ray yawned. "It’s Rebecca. Her son called. She’s unconscious and levitated to her ceiling. He can’t wake her or get her down." "Is Aiden okay?" Ray asked, suddenly alert. "He’s very worried for his mother. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is subconsciously contributing to her own PK outbursts." "We should separate them." Ray suggested. "That may exacerbate things. He was very adamant about not leaving her." Egon speculated. When they arrived at the apartment the PKE meter was useless. The residuals alone were off the meter. Egon decided he’d have to upgrade it. "Hurry! She’s back here!" Aiden said, pulling them inside. The place looked trashed, but he really wasn’t concerned with that right now. Ray put a hand on Aiden’s shoulder. "It’s all right, we’ll help your mom. Try to relax a little. We need to keep things as calm as possible if we’re gong to help her." Ray explained. Aiden nodded his head, and Egon walked past both of them and into the bedroom. She looked like a mythical goddess as she hung from the ceiling. Her hair hung down at least a yard from her head, and a blanket draped her. The closer he came to her the more he could see. Beneath the blanket she was completely nude. He felt a twinge in his groin at the sight of her, but his worry for her superceded the lust. He stripped off his pack, pulled off the gloves and unzipped the boots. Carefully, he stepped up onto the moving bed. "Careful, Eggy." Ray called out. Standing on the bed he was able to reach her. He folded the blanket around her, took hold around her waist and began pulling her down. The PK field was strong, but he was making progress. When he had her low enough, Ray grabbed around her ankles, and together they hauled her down. "Aiden, we need some sheets to anchor her to the bed." Egon told him. The feel of Becca in his arms was an exquisite torture. Last night he had thought she was receptive to being with him, but then things had started going wrong. He should be able to find a way to nullify the PKE emanations let out by a human being. It was easy to contain ghosts, but how could he contain the emanations without harming Becca? He’d yet to find a solution to that problem. As Aiden and Ray secured her feet to the footboard, his mind scanned the types of solutions he’d tried in the past. None of them had worked, or they’d been detrimental to the health of the affected person. He felt uncharacteristically inadequate, and he marveled that she had always had that effect on him. He’d never felt good enough for her, so why did he still want to be with her so badly? He looked down at her sleeping face. Even with her brow knitted she was beautiful. He smoothed her hair from her face, and she turned it into his hand. "It’s okay, Becca. I’m here, and I’ll find a way to help you this time. I promise." He told her, hoping she could hear him. He eased out from under her as Aiden and Ray secured a sheet around her waist. He tied down one of her arms, and Ray tied the other. Her body still tried to levitate, but she wasn’t going anywhere. "I think she took some of these. She’s not hooked on them, but she took one the other night." Aiden said, looking at a pill bottle. He poured the pills out into his hand, counting them. "The bottle says she filled them three months ago, and there’s four pills missing." "She must have taken them thinking it would make the PKE emanations stop. It’s only made them stronger. We need to wake her up." Egon said. "I’ll get the medic bag from the Ecto." Ray volunteered. "Take Aiden with you." Egon said. "I’m not leaving her." Aiden said defiantly. "Aiden, your mother has a history of RSPK incidences. It’s possible she passed the trait on to you." Egon said. "You think I may be causing this? I wasn’t even here! I spent the night at my friend’s apartment. I came home to find her like this!" Aiden argued. Egon put his hands on the boy’s shoulders. He wished he could protect him from this. He was so much like Rebecca. Egon was becoming attached to him. He was starting to see the boy as an extension of her. He squeezed his shoulders in a reassuring manner. "I know you aren’t causing this, but you may be exacerbating the situation unintentionally. Your mother has no control of this whatsoever, being upset can cause it to flare up. If you have the same ability being upset may trigger it. There’s too much PKE in here to use the meters. If you go outside with Ray he can sweep you for PKE emanations. If you’re clear you can come back. If not, you’ll only be hurting her by staying." Egon fully explained his reasoning. Aiden’s shoulders slumped, but Egon could tell he understood. He cupped the back of the boy’s head and pulled him into a hug. "She’ll be okay. I promise you." Egon said, releasing him. His Adam’s apple bobbed, and he nodded. "Come on, it’ll just take a minute, Sport." Ray said, slinging an arm around Aiden’s shoulders. Egon watched them leave the room, and he took a deep breath. Something very strange was going on with his emotions. He had no idea how to figure it all out, but he could help Becca. He turned back to her sleeping form and stroked her hand. "I’ll help you, Becca, and I’ll make sure Aiden is safe, too." He vowed to her. ********** As Ray rode down the elevator with Aiden he couldn’t help but feel sorry for the kid. He was finding out fast that, despite his age, he still needed his mother. He still couldn’t believe that neither Aiden nor Egon had realized their relationship to one another, but, as he watched Egon try to comfort the boy, he could tell Egon had feelings for Aiden. It was really sweet to see, and he couldn’t wait to tell Rebecca about it. When they got to the Ecto, Aiden’s eyes widened. Ray smiled. Maybe later he’d take him for a ride in the Ectomobile. "You want to get the PKE scan done with?" Ray suggested. "Yeah." Aiden nodded, still staring at the car. Ray unclipped the meter from his belt and waved it around Aiden. It gave off a minimal reading, which was normal for anyone who’d been in an area of high PKE emanations. "You’re clear, which is a good thing. We’ve been trying to help your mom with this problem for fifteen years. Hell, it’s what got us all interested in parapsychology. The last thing we need is someone adding fuel to the fire. It used to be just your grandfather that brought about the occurrences. We thought her problems died with him, but apparently not. Of course she disappeared after the funeral, and none of us has seen her since." Ray rambled on, hitching the medic bag over his shoulder and locking the Ecto back up. "Mom promised me last night that when she’s feeling better she’d tell me everything." Aiden said glumly. "Don’t worry, Aiden, she’s going to be all right. She’ll get the chance to tell you everything." Ray tried to reassure him. When they returned to Rebecca’s room nothing had changed. Egon took the medic bag and pulled out the smelling salts. Ray clamped a hand on Aiden’s shoulder in a comforting gesture as Egon used the salts to awaken Becca. She coughed and gasped at the noxious odor, and her eyes fluttered open. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
