Aislinn didn’t even bother to dawn her cloak and ran as fast as she
could from their home down through the town making her way to the East India
Trading Company’s main office building. A few of the officers, Mr. Mercer, and
Lord Beckett were standing in his office when she rushed in. “Where is he?
What’s happened?” She said out of breath as those who were sitting quickly
rose to their feet when a woman entered the room.
Lord Beckett walked over to her seeing the panic in her eyes, “Lady
Norrington. Now, calm down I don’t want you to get upset.” He said holding
his hands up. Aislinn’s eyes looked around the room seeing all the faces
looking at her.
“What’s going on? Where is my husband?” She repeated becoming even
more anxious by the minute when her question wasn’t answered.
“Aislinn, please calm yourself let me try and explain.” Explain? Why
couldn’t he just tell her what she wanted to know? Beckett reached up putting
his hands against her shoulders, and that was the point where she decided she
wasn’t going to get what she wanted from him. She reached up pushing his hands
away quickly moving around him scanning the room.
She saw another door that Mercer was standing next to and grabbed her
skirts lifting them slightly so her feet wouldn’t get tangled and rushed over
to it. Mercer started to step in her way but she reached up shoving him aside
and bursting through the door. Pausing only a moment she saw a physician and his
assistant standing beside a small bed were James was laid out. He was pale,
sweating profusely, and seemed to e almost delirious. There were black and red
circles around his eyes, and he muttered in incoherent noises and words. Two
other men were trying to hold him down while the doctor was trying to administer
something to him.
Aislinn was dumbstruck, he looked like death warmed over. “James?”
She whispered her eyes wide. The doctor looked up to see her standing there, as
did the other men. She started to take a step towards him, but just as she did
Mercer stepped up behind her and wrapped his arm around her middle to take her
out. “JAMES!!!” She screamed wanting to go to him.
The sound of her screaming his name set James off even worse and he began
to struggle even harder swinging out and managing to strike one of the men who
was holding him down. “GET HER OUT OF HERE!” He doctor roared. James kicked
and stuck out again feeling as though he and Aislinn were being attacked now and
that he had to defend them both. Mercer dragged her out, as she kicked and
fought on her own. Then the door was slammed shut behind them
Mercer stood next to Aislinn who had been seated in a chair, as a silent
threat that she was not to move from it. The other officers had left over an
hour ago and all that was left was Mercer, Beckett, and two others as they
waited for the doctor and his assistants to emerge from the room.
Aislinn starred at the floor. She was tired and her body ached from her
struggles and having cried for a long time until she cried herself out. Now all
she could do was wait until some word of what was wrong with James came. Beckett
looked at Aislinn wishing that things hadn’t unfolded like they had but it was
to late now. If James was dying, he would be leaving her in a difficult
situation indeed.
Finally, the door of the room opened and the assistants that had been
holding James down stepped out. Aislinn stood slowly from her chair, having
calmed down from her first arrival and wanting to know what had happened. She
was also terrified to find out at the same time, why those men were leaving and
not staying to look after James.
Beckett approached the doctor as well and they stood there waiting to
find out the diagnoses. “The Admiral is resting right now. It took some doing;
he was delirious . . . in hysterics.”
“What’s wrong with James?” Aislinn asked wishing to God someone
would just give her a straight answer. The doctor sighed pausing a moment.
“He’s contracted a sickness . . . I have no idea what it is. Some of
the symptoms are familiar but . . . others aren’t. They don’t seem to match
up with any one particular illness. No one else has any of these symptoms so as
far as I can tell it’s not contagious. It could have been something he ate,
something he drank, something he touched . . . I don’t know.”
“Is he going to get better?” She said feeling a knot in her throat,
almost feeling light headed at the question.
The doctor paused for another moment. “I’m treating all his symptoms
with what I have. With how I know how to treat them with.” Beckett looked at
Aislinn.
“He’ll have the best care, and will be looked after around the
clock.” The young woman felt sickly and tears started to come to her eyes and
she swayed a little bit. Beckett reached out to catch her but she steadied
herself on his arm and then moved it away as politely as she could.
“Can he . . . can he be taken to our home? He would be more comfortable
there.” She said trying not to cry.
The doctor nodded. “Yes. I think that would be best.” Aislinn nodded
and bit her lip. “You can see him now if you would like.” She nodded again
and looked towards the door before quickly going to it.
Lord Beckett came to Norrington’s front door at his Physician’s
request and knocked. The housekeeper opened it and looked a bit worried that he
was there. “May I come in?” He requested.
“Lady Norrington has been very strict sir . . . she has said no
visitors . . . especially . . .” She blushed a little and looked down.
“Anyone . . . sent by Lord Beckett.” She almost mumbled knowing that was
rude.
“I am Lord Beckett.” Cutler said a little annoyed. Before the
housekeeper could argue anymore he pushed his way past her and handed her his
hat and coat. “Where is she?” He demanded to know.
“Upstairs. With Admiral Norrington.” Lord Beckett’s eyes shifted
upstairs as he sighed in annoyance and started up the stairs at a swift pace. He
remembered the tour that James had given him a few weeks after he arrived and
they had finished furnishing the house and went to the bedchamber were they
would most likely be. Just as he came to the door, Aislinn opened it to come
out.
When she saw him she looked surprised and then frowned a bit, “Lord
Beckett?” She said as she started to step out a little further pulling the
door somewhat closed behind her. “What are you doing here? I don’t recall
inviting you into our home much less up to our bedchamber.”
“Lady Norrington . . . I realize that your husbands fatal illness has
driven you into a state of fear and anxiety over his impending demise because
you do not wish to be left alone here in port royal . . . but dismissing my
physician, and flinging objects at him each time he has tried to re-enter your
home is only going to speed your husbands departure into the afterlife.”
“Shhhh!” She scolded. “How can you say such things! I have been
told that those in the aristocratic class are the model of good manners and
grace but you are disapproving that myth as we stand here!” She said looking
through the crack in the door hoping that James didn’t hear that. Then she
looked back towards Lord Beckett, “As for your Physician . . . I sent him and
his barbaric notion of medicine away because if I didn’t, he would have most
likely finished James much more quickly then the disease would have.”
“You have lost your mind! Step aside!” Lord Beckett demanded. Aislinn
couldn’t believe this. Before she could say anything Beckett reached around
her and started to push the door open but she wasn’t so quickly moved. Cutler
narrowed his eyes and pushed his way passed her bursting into the room.
When he did, he stopped cold finding James propped up by some pillows in
bed reading a book. Norrington looked over at him quite surprised when he saw
Lord Beckett having entered his room so abruptly and Aislinn following after him
looking so incredibly irritated. Apparently, Cutler half expected to find him
almost expired, or completely dead already. “James?” Beckett said in
disbelief not sure if what he was looking at was real.
“Lord Beckett. I didn’t expect to see you.” James said indicating
that he was somewhat out of sorts. Putting his book aside he sat up a bit. “Is
everything all right?” He questioned looking at the two.
“Apparently, much better then expected.” Beckett confessed.
“How can you say that? When you come barging into someone’s house and
then their room uninvited!” Aislinn exclaimed. James arched a brow looking at
Aislinn who instantly quieted and lowered her head.
“I already told you my reasoning, Lady Norrington. If you had not
dismissed my physician and assaulted him by throwing objects with lethal intent
at his person then I would have not had to make a personal appearance on his
behalf!"
James raised his brows at this news and looked at Aislinn, “You did
what?” He said in surprise. He crossed his arms as he looked at her, “I was
informed that the Physician felt you could care for me with better skill so he
left it to you to look after my recovery. Of his own will.”
Aislinn looked as though she had been caught and wrung her hands together
slightly twisting her fingers, “Well . . . it was partly true . . . I could
care for you better.” Beckett looked at Aislinn with narrowed eyes. Lady
Norrington threw her hands up slightly, “He wouldn’t leave! You were getting
worse, and he wouldn’t listen to me! What was I to do! Simply allow him to let
you die because it would have been the polite thing to do!” She said looking
between the two men.
“Will you excuse us please Lord Beckett.” James requested keeping his
eyes on Aislinn. “Perhaps you could return this evening when we would be
properly expecting you.”
“Yes. I suppose that would be the civilized thing to do.” He
said making sure to put extra emphasis on civilized as he looked at Aislinn.
Then he turned and left the bedchamber as he said he would to return at the
later time. The young woman frowned as her eyes turned downcast and she looked
at her fingernails twisting her fingers about again nervous as to what James was
going to say for her lying to him.
Norrington motioned for her to come to him silently and Aislinn hesitated
looking towards the door wondering if it would be more prudent in the interest
of self preservation to run away. Looking back at James she straightened her
dress and put her hands to her side, walking over to him with the resolve of
someone walking to the gallows who had decided to take responsibility for their
crimes.
When she got close enough, James reached up and grasped her hand pulling
her over with one good pull onto his lap. He rested his hand on her thigh as he
wrapped his arm around her waist and looked up at her. “So . . . my young
bride . . . you finally showed some initiative of your own hmmm?”
Aislinn looked from left to right not sure what to say. James didn’t
seem cross and if she didn’t know any better, she could almost swear he was .
. . happy? There was a brightness in his eyes and almost a small smile on his
lips. That was hardly the reaction she was expecting. “Did you really fling
objects at Lord Beckett’s physician because he wouldn’t leave?” James
asked in a low voice a bit amazed knowing that he really shouldn’t be amused
or impressed that she had done such a thing. But he was actually a bit excited
to find that she did.
The young lady bit her lip and hung her head as she nodded a little. “I
asked him nicely first when he just ignored my suggestions and seemed to just
want to make you comfortable and wait for your . . .” she stopped not wanting
to continue the thought much less the sentence. “and wait.” She looked up
feeling as though she had once again done something that was only going to cause
James more shame, “What was I to do? I knew of things that would help your
condition and no one was listening to me. It seemed like the only thing that I
could do was to make him leave so that I could help you myself.” She said as
tears filled her eyes.
James own eyes were sparkling a bit as he looked at her in awe. The fact
that she had taken control of the situation when he was unable to help her made
him realize that she wasn’t as helpless as he had always feared. Reaching up
he gently stroked her hair before letting his hand slide behind her neck, then
he kissed her deeply looking into her eyes. Once again Aislinn wasn’t sure how
to respond. This was not the reaction she had been expecting.
“You made a good decision darling. Perhaps ruffled some feathers doing
so, but . . . considering that you
saved my life . . . I can safely say, to hell with those ruffled feathers.”
Aislinn’s cheeks blushed and her eyes turned away at his language. “Don’t
worry. This time, you did the right thing. I’m not ashamed of you . . . I’m
quite proud of you.”
Aislinn’s eyes lit up as she heard his words and looked at him. He
smiled and kissed her again. An excited smile graced her own lips as she wrapped
her arms around him and hugged him tight. James winced a little still a little
sore from his illness, but he hugged her back despite the pain.
Aislinn sat on the floor in James study by his desk with a blanket
wrapped around her, a candle on the floor shivering at the horrible sounds
coming from outside. The cracking of lighting, the roar of thunder, and the
sound of an angry sea all about making her shutter from head to toe barely able
to keep herself from screaming in terror. The door of the study slid open and
the cook came in carrying a cup with her.
The young woman looked up hopefully, “Has James come home yet?”
“No, afraid not. He’s still down at the fort I imagine. Directing the
storm precautions and procedures. They have to take in those in town who don’t
have shelter and such. But knowing your husband, they were in before the storm
hit.” She assured her. “He’s very good at his job you know.” She placed
the cup down beside Aislinn. “Here miss, drink this. It’ll help your
nerves.”
“James must come home soon. He must.” She said worriedly. Just then a
thunderous chorus of noises came crashing all about the house causing both women
to jump at the sounds. Aislinn shook as her breathing became erratic and she
clutched to the blanket around her.
The cook sighed and shook her head. “I don’t know if I’ll ever get
used to these noises. Always feels like the skies themselves are crashing down.
But they never are, not really.” She tried to reassure Aislinn. “Try not to
worry, miss. I’m going to make sure all the windows are locked up tight.”
She said before turning and leaving the room. Aislinn didn’t want to be left
alone but before she could say anything the woman was gone.
The young lady clutched the blanket tighter and wrapped it around her
looking towards the top of the window where she could see a flashing. The
lightening wasn’t just white here. It was different colors. White, purple,
blue, even green colors . . .sometimes all at once. She shivered and pressed
herself harder against James desk closing her eyes and covering her ears trying
to block out the noise but it was no use. The house shook all about her a tears
started to flow down her face.
Her heart started to flutter faster and faster, and her breathing became
more and more erratic. Aislinn curled up in a ball trying to keep calm but it
was no use. She was to frightened, and she hated being alone. Even worse, James
was out there in that horrid nightmare. Who knew what was happening to him, or
even if he was hurt or needed help. Her imagination started to run away with
her, and she imagined all sorts of terrors, and terrible things.
Suddenly, a tree branch broke and slammed against the wall of James
study. It was simply the last straw and Aislinn jumped to her feet flying out of
the room running for the front door. The cook was at the top of the stairs
seeing the young woman and started to call for her. “Miss! Lady
Norrington!!” She called. When she saw her unlocking the bolts on the door her
eyes went wide and she gathered her skirts hurrying down the stairs.
“AISLINN!” She almost screamed. “STOP!” But her calls went unheeded. The
door flew open and slammed against the wall as Aislinn flung herself out into
the storm.
James was making his rounds about the fort making sure that everyone was
doing their duties and not shirking them as some of the soldiers had a tendency
to do at times. He was pleased to see that this wasn’t the case in the face of
a crisis situation and everything was running smoothly and everyone was being
seen to and taken care of. After coming out of the quartermaster’s chambers
making sure that their supplies were going to hold out without needing to do any
extreme rationing he found himself almost knocked into a wall by a woman running
at full speed.
“Admiral Norrington . . . has she come? Is she here?” James stood to
his feet to find his cook with a panicked look in her eyes looking all about.
“Martha? Why are you not at the house keeping Lady Norrington’s
company?” He questioned.
“I was there trying to keep her calm, she was so frightened. I left her
for only a moment to make sure all the shutters upstairs were secure. When I was
coming back down the stairs I saw her run out into the storm . . . I assumed
that she was coming to the fort to find you!” She said in a panic.
“What!” James exclaimed. “How could you let her go out in this
weather!” Looking around he reached out and grabbed an orderly, “You take a
squad of men and have them spread out to search the fort for Lady Norrington.
Find out if she might have come in unnoticed or if anyone has seen her.” The
orderly saluted and nodded as James shoved him away. “Martha, get back to the
gate and give the guards her description, find out if they’ve let her in and
where they directed her if they did.”
The woman nodded and turned on her heel to do as she was told. James
stepped into the next room. “MARINES!” He roared.
