Chapter Sixteen - Plans
and Plots
They were drunk. Having found a
wheelbarrow in the only slightly singed garden shed, they had sweated and
cursed as they lugged the rum up from the cellar dumping it into the barrow,
before making their careful way down the steep winding road, back to Selena’s. Several trips up and down the stairs and the
wooden crates were stashed in the corner of Jack’s sitting room. It had seemed like a good idea to uncork one
of the dusty old bottles. Jack had been
wanting to talk, like Will had never known before, it seemed like the
floodgates had opened, that the sharing of that one huge secret had unlocked
all the others. At times Will had
laughed until he had almost cried as the stories behind some of the legendary
tales of Captain Jack Sparrow were confided.
But it had not just been Jack telling secrets Will had talked too of
what he could remember of his mother and of what had happened with Elizabeth. One bottle of rum had become another and
then another, at some point Selena had knocked at the door a tray of food in
her hands. She had raised her eyebrows
and pointed a finger at Will.
“Don’t you be coming to my bed drunk and for God’s sake I don’t want the pair
of you rolling downstairs and scaring my guests.”
“ Of course fair Selena” Jack had bowed
with a flourish almost falling over and having to grab onto the table to steady
himself. Will had found that extremely
funny, the expression of resignation of Selena’s face even funnier.
“Bloody Pirates” she had left slamming the door on their laughter.
“So what do you think I should be doing with my sister?” Jack asked not long after the watch had
called midnight.
“Well never having had a sister, let alone a half wild sister, I could not rightly
say Jack, you can’t leave her here though, someone knows about her.”
“ Aye” Jack nodded “I have been having
some thoughts..” he looked in his glass it was empty and he sighed. “Why is the glass always empty” He stood up
and staggered “oh yes perhaps that is why…another Turner?”
Will nodded, he could no longer feel his toes but that seemed no reason to stop
just yet.
Jack fumbled around in the crate, sneezing at the dust that he had disturbed;
he brushed the cobwebs off two bottles and stood grinning. Swaying back across the room, he thrust one
into Will’s hand removing the cork on the other with his teeth.
“Your thoughts..” Will prompted as he
prised the cork out of the misshapen glass bottle raising it to his lips and
drinking deeply.
“ My thoughts yes..” Jack began to speak, hand waving outlining
his plan for Bella.
There was something about it that Will thought she would not like but just now
he could not really put his finger on it.
Perhaps it would become clearer later but just now Jack was wanting to
sing. Now that seemed like a grand idea.

Bella wiped her sword on the shirt of one of the bodies that littered the deck. The fight had been short and brutal. The Spanish pirates had been shadowing them
for days, they had appeared on the horizon not long after the crew of the
Silver Gull had successfully boarded a merchant ship, then they had followed
them for the better part of a week finally attacking in the middle of the
night, not far from Hispanola. Curiously
they had not been interested in the cargo, they seemed to be looking for
someone, a woman, their Captain had been shouting about taking her alive, that
much she had understood. Bella had some
fluency in Spanish as did most of the crew, one could not help but learn a
number of languages living in Tortuga. The
fact that there were so many women on board seemed to confuse the attackers and
the crew of the Gull had fought back viciously. In fact when the women realised that the pirates were looking for
one of them they had fought like demons.
Many of them had suffered at the hands of men before; there was no way
in hell that they would let it happen again, not without a fight.
Taken aback by the fury of their intended victims the survivors had fled back
to their own ship, raising sails swiftly.
Some of the crew had wanted to follow them, to take revenge but
McGuiness had shouted at them to stand down.
So they stood watching as the other vessel fled.
“Strange” Tess had come to stand beside her, absentmindedly handing Bella a rag
to wrap around the cut on her arm. “You
heard what they were saying?”
“ Aye” Bella wiped the blood away and
inspected the wound; it was shallow and would not need stitching. “I wonder who they were after.”
Tess shrugged, “we will probably never know, is your arm alright?”
“ Just a scratch” Bella tied the
bandage off, tightening it with her teeth.
“What does the Captain think about it?”
“Not sure but he has given the order to make for home.”
“ Home…” Bella looked at Tess her heart sinking, she had hoped that they
would be staying out longer, but on the other hand the earlier that they got
back the less likely it would be that Jack would discover what she had been up
to. She was not looking forward to
facing up to Sam and Maggie, but better them than Jack.
“ Aye home Bella, we have done well
this voyage, he is thinking better to be cautious, he doesn’t like things that
are not easily explained. It unsettles
him that the Spanish are crazier than usual.”

The Captain of the fleeing ship looked over his shoulder and scowled. He had not expected a crew with so many
women or for those women to fight so furiously, he had no idea if the one that
they had been sent to find had been on board but he had been told that she was
not in Tortuga. His orders had been to
board any vessel that was known to sail from the pirate port, if any of the
women on board resembled the picture that he had been given by his employer, he
was to bring them back to La Habana, for what he had not been told. But a lot of gold was at stake, so if he
found any that seemed likely he would follow instructions.
But he would not be resuming the search for the girl, not until he had more
crew. He shouted the heading to the
first mate, they would be returning to Cuba.
Perhaps the man who had employed him would have more information now,
rather than this fools errand of boarding every ship they came across.

In an old city of Spain a lean dark haired man sat alone, in his long fingered
hands rested a small portrait. He
stared at it for a long time, his lips moving but he spoke no words. Finally he rang the bell that rested at his
side. A few minutes later a manservant
bustled into the room.
“You require something my Lord?”
“ I do, send for Captain Martinez I
wish to speak to him again.”
“ At once sir.”
He did not watch the servant leave the room, his eyes instead going back to the
faded picture in the silver frame.
An hour later a man of military bearing entered the room.
“My Lord, you wished to speak with me.”
“ Yes I did, you spoke to me of an
uncanny resemblance that this pirate” his lip curled “had to someone that we
both once knew. Were there others with
you that noted this?”
“ Yes My Lord, there was some
discussion between some of the more senior staff.”
“ and are you aware of anyone taking
any action, action that may cause some difficulty to me in the future?”
“ I have heard that your cousin has
sent word to associates in La Habana, and that the English, a Commodore
Norrington I believe has been asking some questions.”
“ Si, that is to be expected the
English they are meddling again, and my cousin well that man is a dog.”
There was a long silence and then the seated man spoke once again..
“ Prepare your men Carlos; two ships
are to be dispatched to search for this pirate. A third must be sent discreetly to Cuba, in the event that my
enemies are more successful.”
“ As you command my Lord.”
