It was back to Save the Citizen again. This time, all of the seniors were in the stands while Lash and Speed were in the arena waiting. Save for Stronghold and Warren, the two thugs were still undefeated as a team. Both of them were under close watch by Principle Powers herself as well as a few other teachers watching from the side. Coach Boomer in his usual referee stripes was on the usual chair to watch. The safety barriers went up to the ceiling this time to enclose the arena completely.
As it was, the two Villains had their pick of those in the crowd. Since he had been successfully avoiding both, Warren was hardly surprised when Speed picked him out. Rising smoothly enough, he made his way down the stairs to head into the changing room to get suited up. That was likely why he missed the name of the other one called by Lash. Not that it took him long to change as they had all gone through the flash-change class all Heroes and Sidekicks had to take.
Stepping into the arena in the body armor, he turned his head to glare at the two at the far end where the Citizen would soon be suspended over the death-trap. It would be a good deal harder as the ways the Citizen was suspended had also been changing.
"Hey, Firestarter."
Turning, there was a hint of surprise to see Crystal stepping into the arena behind him. She had taken her glasses off. It was still rare that she ever participated in the game but she had said there were reasons for her absence.
"Ready to kick ass?" he asked.
Crystal smirked and casually flicked her ponytail off one shoulder. "Always."
Warren smirked and turned to look back at the two they would be facing. He had a strange feeling about this. That meant he would have to be on his toes. Unfortunately, Speed had picked him meaning that the chunky guy had something in mind. As for Lash picking Crystal...he would trust her to worry about that. They waited for Coach Boomer.
"GO!"
Speed took off but both Warren and Crystal were already moving forward. A strike caught Crystal who had already been ready to flip. She used the body-slam to twist around and kick off a safety barrier to land on top of the mailbox and attack Lash. He instantly turned toward her. By then, Warren was focusing on dodging Speed so only kept a side-track of what his partner was doing. He had beaten the punk twice, he would do it again without help if he had anything to say about it.
Lash and Crystal's fight crossed into Warren and Speed's every so often. The clock was against them however. Despite his best efforts, the idiot was faster than the shots of fire. Calculations took over, allowing Warren a cold focus as fire licked along his arms and wound about his upper body. Each shot came closer to the last but Speed was just playing with him. It was fueling his anger.
"Jump!"
He moved without thinking. Jumping straight up, he barely missed a tripping swipe of one of Lash's hands. A blast of wind came as he landed. Dropping into a somersaulting roll more on instinct than anything, Warren barely missed getting struck by a flying body. Yelps and hard thuds signaled that Crystal had used Lash to catch Speed and get both off his back. Not wasting any time, he lunged from the crouch forward toward the spot where the Citizen was suspended.
No wonder Crystal had not used the wind to free the dummy. The frame that the Citizen was trapped by would likely collapse if she used her power and they would loose. From the thumps behind him, and resulting rushes of air, he could guess Crystal was keeping both of the villains occupied. He had to figure a way to get the Citizen out without bringing the frame down on him as well. It was tricky really and he had to move fast.
"Warren!"
The shout came an instant too late as Speed slammed full-force into him. It sent him flying hard into the safety barrier. Hitting the floor, he coughed and forced himself to breathe before getting up. Moving fast was the key here. Compared to Speed however he was rather slow. Another hit and he was flying into the prop light-post. It broke and crashed to the floor. Crystal barely managed to leap aside in time to avoid it. Lash wound up being tackled by her motion and they went tumbling.
Unfortunately, the set-up was perfect. Even as Warren kicked the lamp post off and rose, Speed had come back. Another hit and he was thrown to the floor in the open. Fire leapt back to life as he got up for another shot. Speed however had another idea. He shot forward, dodging the fireball thrown at him and began to run in circles around Warren once more. His speed had increased just as Warren's powers had in the past year or so.
As the air was suddenly pulled upward, Warren felt his heart hammering harder. Instantly he attempted to get a shot off. It only sputtered and died before it could even leave his hand. He remembered what had happened when it was him and Stronghold. Fear gripped him again as he felt the force of suction stealing even what little air he had left in his lungs. Mouth opening in a futile effort to gasp, he strained to get air as his body became aware of the danger. His flames were sputtering and dying. It was as if a great hand had caught him, squeezing his chest.
It was just like before. There was no air, no way he could move. Gasping, he fell to his knees, lungs straining as he fought. Not again...not again. The fear was choking him just as surely as the vortex was suffocating him. His hands met the floor hard as his head spun and his vision began to grow bleary then gray. He had to breathe. Unable to even call for help, he tried desperately to get another breath as his ears roared with the rush of blood from the pounding of his heart.
Help...help...not again.....HELP!
Suddenly, something slammed into him from above, sending him sprawling to the floor. It hit him hard enough to force his lungs to expand and air to rush in with enough force it felt like a kick. Air! He gasped as the wind continued to force itself in and out of his lungs. Blackened sight began to lighten as his oxygen-starved body began to recover. Hands clawing frantically on the floor, he tried to force his body to slow down. His chest hurt, his head was throbbing but the regenerative powers were not to be controlled. Sweet, cool air. The roaring in his ears began to die away.
He felt oddly light. Managing to get his eyes open, he pushed his body's natural regeneration powers forward so he could see again. What he saw was Crystal literally send Speed flying across the arena due to a flying spin-kick. The guy yelled as he realized that he was heading straight toward the frame holding the Citizen. He hit it hard and it instantly collapsed. But Crystal made a sharp motion with one hand and the dummy shot free while Speed wound up caught in the non-lethal spikes of the trap.
"HEROES WIN!"
The wind continued to circle as Crystal turned around. She had a rather deep cut along her left cheek that was bleeding but that was not really the first thing his oxygen-starved brain picked out. There was a wild look in her eyes...which were literally flashing with blue. He continued to gasp even as she seemed to glide forward across the floor assisted by the wind to offer him one hand. Taking it, he found himself lifted rather easily to stand.
Wavering, he stumbled as the cyclone died away. Crystal was suddenly there, catching him in her arms and holding him upright. Dizzy again now that he had no support from the air, he found himself beginning to black out once more. As he drifted out of consciousness, he heard her say something that helped the lingering fear vanish.
"Easy, Firestarter. It's okay. I've got you."
