Chapter 16 – Sekmet's amulets
Strange. Rick didn't
remember putting silk sheets on their bed and yet he felt the cool
material sliding over his skin, a stark contrast to the warm body
curled possessively around his back. But the form was familiar
enough, so Rick relaxed again.
He had almost sunk back
into sleep when the reality of their current
situation crashed down on him. There were silken sheets on their bed
because they weren't at the house in Cairo. His eyes shot open,
blinking into the dim light of the chamber as he remembered the
trials and the terror at seeing Ardeth fall.
The peaceful
happiness he had felt for the short moments before the memories
returned was completely gone now, replaced by the wish to just go
back to sleep with Ardeth curled around his body and forget about the
last trial still awaiting them.
Rick hadn't even
noticed that his body had tensed as he thought about the next task,
but he relaxed again as Ardeth pressed a soft kiss on his neck and
pulled him a little tighter to his body. Closing his eyes the
American turned in his lover's embrace, pressing his lips to Ardeth's
and for the blessed moments that their tongues tangled together he
could forget about the goddess and their
tasks, about the Med-jai and the oncoming war.
But his peace was
short-lived as a bright light suddenly shone in the room, a lioness
stepping out of the golden beam. Like the ones before her she was
dressed in Egyptian garments, richer than those of the ones before
her. In her clawed hand she held two amulets, gleaming in the
sourceless light that suddenly filled the room.
Breaking away from each
other Rick and Ardeth sat up in the bed, their lower bodies hidden by
a bed sheet and their shoulders still
touching each other. Even though the two warriors couldn't read it in
her face the goddess was internally smiling
at the two of them, delighted in the wealth of love her chosen
emitted.
They had both proved
themselves worthy, even if they didn't know it yet, uncertainty and
worry radiating from their postures. They waited for their last task,
not knowing that they had already completed it.
“My chosen,” Her voice
was a deep, resonating sound that easily filled the chamber with her
divine presence. “You have completed the last task and have
proved yourself worthy of leading my army.” The goddess'
amusement increased even more as a look of puzzlement spread over the
blond human's face and in a rare show of sympathy for human
obliviousness she explained.
“In the last task I would have
demanded of you to prove the love you feel for each other. But not
even the coldest of hearts could have ignored the love you've shown
for each other last night and so I hold your task fulfilled.”
Ardeth couldn't help
the slight blush that spread over his face as he listened to the
goddess. Not that he was ashamed for being
with Rick, but she had still intruded on an extremely intimate
moment. But his embarrassment was pushed
away by relief almost immediately.
They had completed the
last task which meant that they could return to the tribe victorious.
Ardeth only hoped that they wouldn't be too late since he had no idea
how much time had elapsed since they had entered the goddess'
temple.
Stepping a little
closer to the bed the goddess extended her
hand, dropping the two amulets she had held
onto the bedspread. “Wear them while you fight and when the
right moment has come my army will emerge and bless you with victory.
Have faith in your strength. Goodbye, my chosen.”
With these words she
was suddenly gone and Ardeth and Rick found themselves in the temple
again, fully dressed. The amulets were lying on the ground in front
of them and the Med-jai picked them up. Handing one over to Rick he
pulled the amulet over his head before examining it a little closer.
It didn't look like it
contained the key to a goddess' army. A
simple golden lion head, it's eyes inlaid
with sapphires. The expression on Rick's face was skeptic
too, but he just shrugged his head in answer to Ardeth's unspoken
question. They just had to have faith.
Pulling Rick into a
quick kiss the two of them headed towards the temple exit.

Alex nervously paced
next to the temple entrance, not leaving the spot out of his gaze for
even a second. The sun was already sinking below the horizon and his
dad and Ardeth hadn't returned yet. Obviously he wasn't the only one
who was worried since the other Med-jai were frantically talking
amongst themselves.
His Arabic wasn't good,
but he understood enough to get that they were torn between staying
where they were supposed to be, going in to look for their leader and
returning to the Med-jai village. They were worried that the battle
would begin sooner
than they had thought and that they would be needed there.
The only one who didn't
seem to care was his uncle, who ever since they left the chamber had
endlessly complained about the amount of gold he wasn't allowed to
take. True, Alex loved his uncle completely, but sometimes even he
was annoyed by the constant meaningless chatter.
Especially at the
moment while he was afraid that something might have happened to his
dad. Understanding that the woman who looked like his mom wasn't her
had been hard enough and her death was still painfully close to the
surface. His dad just had to be alright.
Alex had just turned
around to resume his pacing in the other direction, when an arm
reached out of the hole in the ground and Ardeth climbed out.
Squatting down next to the entry he reached down and helped Rick up,
causing relief to spread over Alex's face. Not bothering to give his
dad time to prepare for his assault Alex hugged him tightly, almost
pushing Rick down with the force of his attack.

Ardeth was surprised by
the fact that not even a day had passed since they had entered
Sekmet's temple. While they had been caught up in the trials time had
seemed meaningless, passing by unnoticed.
But now that they were back he needed to know how long they had
before the Lock-tai would attack.
The ride back to the
Med-jai camp had been swift, worry urging them to drive their horses
through the soft desert sandas fast as possible. Rick had been at his
side the whole time, but now Ardeth had left him at his hut, giving
his lover a little time to spend with his son.
Judging by the frantic,
rushed activity that had broken out all
over the village there wouldn't be much time left before the battle
started. His face set into a confident stony mask of determination
Ardeth entered the meeting hut, finding all of the tribe's leaders
gathered there.
Not bothering with more
than the necessary niceties Ardeth sat down in his chair before he
addressed the council. “How long do
we have until the Lock-tai arrive?”
Muhammad immediately
rose to answer his question, his expression grim. “We sent out
falcons to estimate their current position. They will arrive
at around noon tomorrow. We have to be prepared to face them then.”
Mulling the situation
over for a few minutes Ardeth spoke. “Gather all your warriors.
We will be riding towards them and set up camp an hour's ride away
from the village. If our defenses fail that will give the women and
children a chance to escape.”
The voice that suddenly
broke the silence after Ardeth had finished was filled with
unconcealed loathing. “So, you think our defenses will fail, my
leader?” The last two words had been delivered with sarcasm, a
mocking expression spread over Rashid's face as he stared at Ardeth.
His anger was almost
instantaneous, but Ardeth kept his temper in check. He needed
Rashid's tribe and he couldn't risk loosing their support. Holding up
the amulet Sekmet had given him he answered. “The goddess
Sekmet has assured me our victory as long as we believe in it. With
Allah's and her help we will win this battle. Now go and gather your
men. We will set out as soon as possible.”
The other leaders
nodded their approval so Ardeth strode out of the hut, intend on
finding Rick and informing him of their plan.
