Disclaimer: I do not own The Mummy movie series, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
Morningstar: The
Med-jai will have their say about the relationship in the sequel,
that I' ve already started to write. But up till
now, they only see Rick and Ardeth as friends. I would never dream of
hurting Jonathan...not too bad, anyways.
Chapter 16 – The ritual
Jonathan struggled
against the bonds, that tied him to the mirror's smooth surface. The
air was heavy with smoke as Nefertiri burned incense
and other herbs as an offering to the gods. She was dressed in an old
Egyptian robe and chanted in old Egyptian
the whole time. The book of Isis lay open in front of her, it's
golden surface illuminated by the candles that decorated the room.
Since his language
skills were a bit rusty, Jonathan didn't understand everything she
said, but the bits he did understand caused him to worry. He could
only hope, that Rick would somehow get him out of this shit, like he
usually did.
Suddenly he screamed,
when the mirror under his back started to glow, sending strange
tingles through his body. It felt as if invisible hands reached for
him, trying to draw him into the mirror. The hands felt cold as death
as they slithered over his body like snakes. Gulping in fear,
Jonathan listened as Nefertiri continued her chant.
“Oh, Osiris, great god of the
underworld. I call you in the name of your esteemed
wife, the great goddess Isis. I beg you,
grant me your blessing and allow me to use your mirror. I am your
servant. My body, my blood and my soul belong to you.”
Jonathan struggled
harder as he saw the gleaming jewel-encrusted dagger, that she drew
from her golden dress. Lowering it to his chest, she cut away his
shirt, although she was careful not to
break the skin. Jonathan was unable to follow the next part of her
chant, since in was spoken in the most ancient of languages, but what
he finally managed to understand again, made the blood freeze in his
veins.
“I give you the blood of this
body, the blood of my own kin. Accept my servitude, oh Osiris, let
his soul, sinking into your realm, be the payment for my dreams. Let
my dreams be fulfilled like the goddess
Maat gave them to me. In the name of Isis I beg you to accept my
offer.”
When the mirror shone
even brighter, the light hurting Jonathan's eyes, Nefertiri smiled.
It was such a cold expression, so foreign on the face of his beloved
sister, that Jonathan shivered. 'Now would be a good time for someone
to rescue me.'
He screamed, when
Nefertiri's blade started slicing his skin, marking it with
ritualistic hieroglyphics. The blood, that
flowed from his body sunk into the mirror and vanished as the hands
on his body grew stronger and bolder, trying to draw him into the
mirror.
As Nefertiri raised the dagger for a last time, pointing it
towards his heart, Jonathan closed his eyes. But instead of feeling
the pain he had anticipated, he heard the clang of metal hitting
metal.

Arriving at the temple, Rick, Ardeth and Alex immediately stormed
inside. The scene that presented itself to their eyes was horrible.
Jonathan bound to the mirror, bleeding from countless
cuts. Rick would have liked to cover Alex's eyes, but there was no
time, since Nefertiri had already raised her dagger, ready for the
final strike. Grabbing a sword from one of the statues, Rick lunged
forward, catching her dagger with his blade, before it could touch
Jonathan.
Enraged Nefertiri focused on him,
drawing a second dagger. Barely fighting back her furious onslaught,
Rick yelled at Ardeth and Alex: “Alex, grab the book and get
out. Ardeth, get Jonathan and then leave.”
The Med-jai hesitated for a moment and wanted to protest, since he
was unwilling to leave his beloved behind. “Go. This is my
fight.”
Finally reacting, Ardeth severed the bonds, that held Jonathan to
the mirror. He pulled the weakened Englishman up and dragged him
towards the exit. Alex had already grabbed the book and was headed
outside. With a last look back, Ardeth followed him. He knew, that
Rick had to beat Nefertiri to get over their past together, but it
felt wrong to leave his lover behind.

Nefertiri lost one of her daggers as she ducked away from Rick's
sword. But with a quick backwards movement, she brought herself close
to a statue, that held a sword. Now equipped with equal weapons she
attacked her former husband, using all the skill she had learned in
ancient times.
“You fools. The ritual was almost complete. You can not stop
me from fulfilling my destiny.”
Barely dodging her sword, Rick replied: “I don't think so.
Your sacrifices are long gone.” Then his eyes softened slightly
as he asked: “How could you do that to your own brother?”
Nefertiri's answering laugh made the blood freeze in his veins
with it's unbelievable coldness. “Why would I care for the
brother of this meaningless shell? This body will be of no
significance when I become the god queen of
Egypt. And from Egypt my rule shall expand to the whole world.”
Shocked by her insanity, Rick was momentarily unguarded, which
gave Nefertiri the opportunity to kick his sword away. Frantically
searching for a new weapon, Rick moved backwards, but she had him
cornered.
Laughing cruelly, Nefertiri took a swipe
with her sword. Blood started pouring from Rick's chest, where the
blade had sliced his skin. The wound wasn't deep, but the pain made
him sink to the ground. Not one to give up, Rick tried to get up, but
a kick to his stomach made him kneel again.
Nefertiri lifted her sword, ready to strike, when she heard Rick
whisper a single word.

“Ardeth.”
Alerted Nefertiri blocked the sword, that was swung at her head
just in time. Ardeth stepped back, drawing her away from Rick.
Casting a worried look at his lover, he furiously swung his curved
sword at Nefertiri.
“Rick get out of here.” Ardeth had been shocked, when
he had returned to find his lover, bleeding on the floor. Attacking
Nefertiri again, the two of them circled
around the mirror.
The mirror's glass surface still gleamed, when the temple suddenly
started to shake and rumble. Ardeth and Nefertiri tried to stay
upright, while still keeping their fighting distance. Suddenly a loud
booming voice could be heard.
“YOU HAVE FAILED TO BRING ME A SACRIFICE. TASTE THE WRATH OF
OSIRIS.”
The earth started shaking harder. Rick tried to haul himself up at
a pillar, while he screamed for Ardeth, who was close to the mirror
and Nefertiri. Suddenly the mirror's surface exploded, shards flying
everywhere. Blinding light flooded the room and Rick had to shield
his eyes.
When he was able to see again a gaping hole had replaced the
mirror. Ardeth and Nefertiri where nowhere to be seen. “Ardeth.”
Throwing all caution to the wind, Rick ran to the hole looking down.
Both Ardeth and Nefertiri hung on a small ledge barely holding on.
Underneath them a black mist swirled, hands reaching out for them and
trying to pull them down. The walls of the pit were lined with mirror
shards, cutting both Ardeth and Nefertiri.
Rick was about to reach out to Ardeth, when he suddenly heard
Evy's voice call out to him. Looking over at Nefertiri, he saw that
her features had softened, once again resembling the face of his
beloved wife. Confused Rick halted in his movement.
“Rick. Rick, please save me. I love you. Have you forgotten
me?”
'Evy? Is that really her?' Hearing his beloved wife again, cut
Rick to the quick. But he also looked at Ardeth, who had become his
lover just two nights ago. He knew, that he had to choose, but it was
so hard. He didn't want to loose either of them, but he had to
decide, since the ground was shaking harder and he could see both
their grips slipping from the ledge.
Looking in Ardeth's eyes he saw love, but also a resignation
there. Evy once again raised her voice, calling out to him and
reminding him of their past. Looking over at her, Rick made his
decision.
