Elizabeth’s stomach twisted as bile rose up her throat. She groaned and then heaved before retching out the contents she’d eaten. There wasn’t much. She’d practically puked all of her breakfast out already.
She flushed the toilet and then leaned against the bowl as she waited for her stomach to settle. Behind her, she heard a little whine of concern.
“I’ll be fine,” she said with a wave of her hand.
Thomas didn’t leave. And she shouldn’t have really expected him to. He rarely left her side. At first, it made sense. He couldn’t let her out of his sight. What if she escaped? Perhaps he still worried about that. But, there was something else she realized. He was lonely. Sure, he had his family, but no stranger, other than her, had given him attention. No stranger had been kind.
That’s what got you here in the first place, she thought. Didn’t matter. That was in the past. She cared about him. No, she loved him. As strange as it was. His protectiveness of her, even from herself, had won her heart. Although, there were times he was just a little bit overbearing.
Thomas’s clear anxiety seeped into her skin. She felt him shift his weight and heard his clothes rustle. With a sigh, she got up. She would rather just lay there for a while. Bask in the misery that her stomach was putting her in, but she didn’t want Thomas to grow more concerned.
Most of the time, she didn’t mind Thomas being glued to her side. With him around, she knew she was safe. Not that Hoyt had tried anything in a long while. And the ladies had never tried to harm her before. But still, it was nice to have him just in case.
However, there were those moments, like today, when she would rather be left alone. But there was no way to truly explain to him that she just needed some alone time.
She half-turned, making sure to plaster her fake reassuring smile for him. She had to lean back slightly and tilt her head up. He stood directly behind her. His large frame made her feel so tiny sometimes.
He reached out, then hesitated before placing his hands on her shoulders. His eyes searched her face as he gave her a slight nod of worry and a sound of concern.
“I’ll be alright,” she repeated, patting his hand.
He leaned in to kiss her.
Her reaction was automatic as she shirked away from him in horror. Her hand quickly clamped over her mouth. Hurt flashed through his face from her rejection. She couldn’t blame him for constantly doubting her feelings toward him. Strangers had been rejecting him all his life. But, in her case, he won her over. He just didn’t realize it. Or maybe he still couldn’t believe it.
Blood rushed to her cheeks from embarrassment. She reached out her free hand and grabbed his wrist while shaking her head.
“I just puked. I need to brush my teeth,” she said, keeping her mouth covered. She needed to reassure him. Let him know she just didn’t want to kiss him with the taste of vomit still in her mouth.
His eyes widened slightly and then he let out a soft chuckle. He leaned in again. She froze and waited as he planted a kiss on her cheek. Her shoulders relaxed. It was still an automatic response. He had never once hit her, but there was a part of her that knew he was capable of violence. A part of her that still feared that maybe one day he would.
He straightened to his full height, making her raise her gaze again. His fingers gently stroked her cheek and she leaned into his hand. His skin was warm but rough. His hands sported the callouses to show he was a butcher by trade.
A butcher. She swallowed back some saliva and pulled away from him.
“I’m going to brush my teeth,” she said.
Reaching the sink, she glanced at him through the mirror. There was a puzzled frown on his face as he examined her. Before she could ask him a question he abruptly turned and walked out of the room.
Just your imagination, she thought. She quickly busied herself, putting toothpaste on her brush. She couldn’t exactly tell him why she had gotten an upset stomach.
It was easier said than done. Being “okay” with his way of life.
A shudder ran through her body.
She was pretty sure she heard a scream the night before. Man? Woman? Animal?
She’d woken up in a cold sweat. Her heart pounding wildly in her chest and Thomas was gone. She wasn’t sure how long she waited. A few minutes probably, although it felt much longer. She’d stared at the bathroom door, stupidly hoping he was in there, despite the fact that the door was open and the lights off.
She shouldn’t have done it. Shouldn’t have gotten out of bed and walked down the hallway to investigate. What did she expect to find that would calm her down?
Thomas.
She had foolishly hoped that seeing him would just give her the answers she wanted. That, maybe he had gotten up in the middle of the night for some mundane reason. Maybe the scream was that of an animal.
Elizabeth turned on the faucet and spat out the toothpaste.
She had only made it down two steps before hearing a commotion coming from the basement. There was an odd feeling about the whole situation. Almost as if Thomas didn’t want her to know that they had a person down there. That didn’t make sense though. Why keep that a “secret”? He’d brought her down there once and showed her Jason.
Elizabeth shuddered.
She had stayed in the hallway, just close enough to hear their words, but deep enough to make it back to her room before anyone saw her. Hoyt’s clearly pleased and delighted laugh echoed in her mind. Didn’t last long though. Thomas was quick to shush him. Not wanting to wake her up? Whatever Hoyt said after was far too low for her to make out. Did it really matter? The two came from the basement. It was the middle of the night. They had someone alive down there.
Or still down there and slowly being killed.
Elizabeth splashed her face with cold water.
Jason had been kept alive in that basement for a while. They had slowly cut him up until she killed him. Killed him to spare him any more pain.
She grabbed the face towel and slowly pressed it against her skin.
Whatever answers she was looking for she wasn’t going to get. She had quietly made her way back to her room and into bed. How she managed to fall asleep before Thomas came back was beyond her. And when she woke up, it felt almost as if it were a dream. Thomas’s arms were wrapped around her. He didn’t act any differently. Didn’t act as if anyone was down in that basement.
Breakfast was normal. Just like any other day since she started living with them. Hoyt complimented Luda Mae on her cooking. Monty mumbled something about lack of salt. And Thomas made sure to add some extra meat onto Elizabeth’s plate. That wasn’t unusual either. It always bothered him how little meat she ate. And it always pleased him whenever she tried to eat more.
She wasn’t lying when she told him she didn’t like eating meat. It was any kind of meat. She hated the taste and texture. But the Hewitts were not going to allow her to have an all-vegetarian diet. Not even Thomas, who was making a genuine effort in getting the items that she liked, would budge on that. He always watched and waited for her to start eating whatever meat dish they had. He’d reward her with a small nod of approval before digging into his own food.
Today was sausages for breakfast.
Elizabeth’s stomach twisted on her again at the thought of those sausages.
Could have been pork. She had actually seen Thomas butcher a pig once. The family’s shop did sell meat after all, actual animal meat, much to her surprise. He had come home all excitedly, taking her to the side of the house where his little butcher workshop was. She hadn’t even realized it existed. It was a little bit of a relief to know that they kept their human butcher workshop and animal butcher workshop separate. He had slaughtered the pig quite easily in front of her. He clearly just wanted to show off his skills. It was only the one time. Perhaps he saw how pale she’d gotten that day. Or noticed how her body wouldn’t stop trembling. Whatever else he killed was not at home. Although, he did bring back meat with him to prepare and take back to the store the next day.
But, she wasn’t a fool. There was no way this was the first time she was served potential human meat. There was little doubt in her mind that she ate some part of Jason. If not before he was killed most likely after, despite Hoyt’s anger and claim that she’d “spoiled the meat”. But, if she had eaten any human meat the family was oddly extremely discreet about it. They had yet to have a meal where it felt that they were eating something “special”.
Elizabeth looked at her reflection. Had there been other victims during her time there?
She’d been successful in avoiding the thought of where the meat came from. Successful in keeping her mind carefully blank whenever she bit into a sausage or meatloaf or stew. But, the moment her teeth sank into that first sausage this morning she heard that scream. It played in her head over and over and there was nothing she could do to get her mind off it. She couldn’t stop thinking about how the meat could have been a person. A person who had a family. Mom. Dad. Siblings? Kids?
Somehow, she managed to finish her food. Fat lot of good that did. It refused to settle. She tried her best. Tried to get her thoughts on what was planned for the day, instead of what she’d just eaten. All it took was one last whiff of that meaty smell for her stomach to revolt.
Taking in a deep breath, Elizabeth slowly let it out.
“This is your life, Liz,” she whispered to her reflection. “Get used to it.”
Her thumb absentminded rubbed the engagement ring on her finger. Her silent vow to him. God, it would have been so much easier to handle him being just a rapist. Life had to go and tack on him being a cannibal with the rest of his family. A family who had yet to show any care toward her besides her potential of having babies.
A small smile crossed her lips. She had thought that Thomas told his family everything. But, apparently, he didn’t discuss his plans to propose to her with anyone. The look of shock on Luda Mae’s face, as Thomas excitedly showed her the ring on Elizabeth’s finger, was unexpected. The older woman was quick to cover up her surprise with a smile of happiness. Yet, Elizabeth couldn’t help but feel that Luda Mae was not happy about it.
Elizabeth looked down at the ring. Yes. She wasn’t happy. If anything, Luda Mae looked almost alarmed. But, this was what she wanted, wasn’t it? Give Thomas a wife, willing or not. Get grandbabies. Why did it feel like now that Elizabeth was starting to settle and accept her role that Luda Mae no longer wanted her?
“You’re being too paranoid,” she said to herself. It was hard not being paranoid. Thomas was still the only one who made any effort to know her. Perhaps Luda Mae was waiting for her to get pregnant to really “seal the deal” that she was a part of the family.
Elizabeth shook her head. She wasn’t ready for that yet. She needed them to accept her first. She needed to be a part of the family first before she’d be comfortable bringing in a baby.
She looked at her reflection again. “Well,” she said to herself. “Guess you’re a cannibal now.” Her stomach twisted again and she clenched the sides of the sink as her world spun slightly. Easy to say, hard to mentally commit to the idea.
She waited another moment, taking in and letting out deep breaths. Finally, when she was sure she could move without wanting to puke again, she left the bathroom.
Elizabeth smoothed her clothes around her stomach and slowly rubbed it as she made her way down the stairs. It was going to be a rough day, she could tell already.
She paused midstep. The wood creaked with her weight.
Luda Mae and Thomas stood by the front door, clearly discussing something. Or at least, Luda Mae was whispering something to Thomas.
The two stopped and looked up at her.
“What?” she asked, making her way down the rest of the stairs.
Thomas’s eyes went from her face down to her belly then back at her eyes. Her eyes widened at the implication.
“I’m not pregnant,” she quickly said, moving her hands away from her stomach. “The food just didn’t sit right with me this morning.”
“Just the same, dear,” Luda Mae said. Her face beamed with happiness. “I think it would be best for you to see the doc.”
There was a look in Thomas’s eyes. Hope? He took a step toward her and then reached out, placing his hand on her belly. She grabbed his hand and shook her head.
“Don’t, Thomas,” she said. She looked at him with desperation. She couldn’t have him hope. He’d be so disappointed. “I’m not pregnant,” she said firmly.
“Can’t be too sure about that, dear,” Luda Mae said. “With you being irregular. I’m going to ring the doc up. See if he can’t fit you in today.”
“I-”
Luda Mae walked away before Elizabeth could put up more of a protest. Thomas’s hand pressed on her stomach and his lips twitched up slightly.
Her heartbeat picked up. “Thomas?”
He raised his eyes and his smile grew larger as he looked at her. Then he slowly frowned and cocked his head. Raising his hand, he brushed her cheek and let out a little cooing sound. As if he were trying to reassure her that everything was going to be alright.
Damn it! She should have figured that sooner, rather than later, she’d end up seeing the doctor. Two years was just too hopeful of a number.
She gave him a stiff smile. “I.. I guess I’ll go get ready,” she murmured. She didn’t wait for him to answer and quickly ran up the stairs and went back into their room.
She shut the door behind her and wait. “Not good,” she whispered. Standing up straighter, she started to pace.
She needed to tell him why she couldn’t get pregnant. Her doctor had warned her that nothing was 100% safe. But the chance of her actually being pregnant was so small it would be considered a miracle.
Tell him? She gulped as her body went cold. What would she lose? Her life? Doubtful. But probably any form of freedom she’d been given. His love? She wasn’t sure. Probably not. His trust though. Yes, that she would lose. And she’d worked hard on getting him to trust her. To trust that she wasn’t just playing a part to please him.
Tell him. She needed to tell him. Get ahead of whatever shitstorm was about to happen. He needed to hear from her. Hopefully, her honesty, even though it was kinda late, would curb his feelings of betrayal somewhat.
Swallowing back her fear, Elizabeth made her way back downstairs.
“Thomas?” she called out.
He appeared, stepping out from the living room.
“Thomas, can we talk?” she asked as she placed her hand on his arm.
His eyes glistened with happiness as he gently ran his fingers through her hair. She placed her hand on his and he nodded his head.
“Lizzy dear,” Luda Mae called out. “I just spoke to the doc. He said he had time to see you, but you gotta be there in thirty minutes.” She walked in through the dining room and then let out a chuckle shaking her head at them.
Elizabeth’s eyes widened. “I don’t think it’s that urgent,” she said as she looked at Luda Mae. She couldn’t help but tighten her grip on Thomas’s hand.
“Nonsense, child,” Luda Mae said as she walked over to them. “Doc has an opening. No use in wasting it. Besides, you two have… well, let’s say I’d rather we be sure. I wouldn’t want you overexerting yourself unnecessarily if you have a wee-one in ya.”
Elizabeth’s heart pounded in her ears. Things were moving too quickly.
“Alright,” she said, with a nod of her head. “But, I’d like to talk to Thomas first.”
“Drive to the doc is twenty minutes.” Chills ran through her body as she heard Hoyt’s voice. “Ain’t got the time for a quickie.”
“That’s not what I want Thomas for,” she snapped as she turned to look at Hoyt. She hadn’t heard him come in. He leaned against the doorframe of the living room, his back to the front door.
He smiled at her and shrugged his shoulders. “Don’t matter. Ain’t got the time. Let’s go, Lizzy dear.”
Thomas let out a groan of annoyance, while Hoyt gave Elizabeth a lopsided grin. There was clearly no arguing.
She let out a sigh, butterflies filled her stomach, but she followed behind Hoyt. Perhaps she could tell Thomas while they were waiting for the doctor. Not like she could tell him in the car with Hoyt to listen. Yes, at the doctor’s office. There was always that period of waiting for the doctor and there was no way in hell she’d let Hoyt join her in that room. She’d make an exception for Thomas. Hopefully, Thomas would be too stunned to make a scene and then later in bed, she’d explain. He’d understand… wouldn’t he?
Hoyt opened the front door to his squad car for her, motioning for her to get in. She frowned and turned.
“I think Thomas should-” Her heart stilled.
Thomas stood at the edge of the porch with Luda Mae by his side.
“Oh, I’m sorry, dear. I need Tommy to help me with a few things. But don’t worry. Hoyt’s just gonna take you to the doc and bring you right back,” Luda Mae said.
“But I’d-”
“Ain’t got all day, Lizzy dear,” Hoyt said as he grabbed her arm.
She automatically started to struggle. “Don’t touch me!” she yelled, jerking her arm away. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Thomas start to walk down the steps toward them.
“Tommy, she’s fine,” Hoyt quickly said as he shot her a look. “Didn’t mean to frighten you. Just, get in the car. The sooner we get there the sooner we can come back.”
Thomas quickly reached them. Hoyt raised his arms in surrender and took another step back.
“Don’t worry, Tommy. You know Hoyt will be able to protect her in town if he needs to. Not like she’s gonna run away, isn’t that right?” Luda Mae asked.
Thomas leaned in and ran his hand along her cheek. For the first time, she saw fear in his eyes. Fear of going out there?
Elizabeth shook her head. “I’m not going to run away, but Thomas-”
“Okay, you heard her. She’ll be fine. Besides, you’ve got some important chores to do before you can spend more time with your Lizzy,” Hoyt said. "Unless you wanted her to help you out."
Thomas’s eyes widened with alarm as he looked at his uncle then down at her.
She turned her attention to the ground. Chores. Maybe this was a good thing. Let him clean up that basement, get rid of the evidence while she’s away. She let out a sigh. Rising onto her tiptoes, she planted a kiss on Thomas’s lips.
“I need to talk to you when I get back. Something important. Okay?”
He nodded his head. She swallowed back her fear and smiled at him. Glancing at Hoyt, she squared her shoulders and went to his squad car. It was easy to slip in and sit down. She pulled her feet in then looked up to see Thomas standing next to her. He made sure she was all inside before closing the door for her. Her heart pounded in her chest but she nodded her head in appreciation and mouthed 'thank you'. There was still a part of her that desperately wanted him to join them.
“Mind what your mother says, Tommy,” Hoyt said.
Thomas pressed his hand on the window and smiled at her. She didn’t have time to react. Luda Mae grabbed his arm and pulled him away. As the good obedient son that he was, Thomas didn’t fight his mother and followed her.
The driver’s side door slammed shut, causing Elizabeth to flinch. It wasn’t long before they were on the road.
