James waited impatiently trying not to look to interested or concerned as
he sat at his desk writing a letter. He was having difficulty concentrating
considering he was waiting on a certain person to come around to his office that
was due a while ago but had not come yet.
Finally their was a knock at the door and James looked up anxiously but
paused deciding it was better to continue to look rather busy and dipped his
quill in the ink going back to writing. “Yes?” He said indicating that they
should enter. In came the doctor that he had been waiting for and he put his
quill aside as the man shut the door.
“My apologize Admiral Norrington. I realize we had an appointment
earlier but something came up that couldn’t wait.” James gave a nod. “I
was curious as to why you didn’t want me to go your home instead? This seemed
a bit unusual considering Lady Norrington isn’t here.”
“We have some things to discuss first I think.” James said rising
from his seat as he walked around his desk. “If you’re going to remain her
physician, her privacy is going to be a concern.”
The doctor looked down a moment as this wasn’t the first time the
Admiral had addressed him since Lord Beckett let it slip he knew about
Aislinn’s miscarriage. “Admiral Norrington, I’ve apologized 1,000 times
over, and I swear to you that it won’t happen again. Anything to do with Lady
Norrington’s health will remain strictly confidential.”
“I hope so. Because I promise you that you won’t even practice
medicine in a butchers shop should your tongue go wagging about again. It’s
irritating enough that Lord Beckett is going to most likely be informed of my
own health, but I have a feeling that is going to happen no matter who is
looking after me. He does not need updates on my wife. It is not his affair nor
anyone else’s by my own. Is that understood?”
“Yes Admiral.” The doctor said obediently.
“Good. Then you may come by this evening. I’m afraid that you won’t
get near her when she’s healthy if I’m not present.” He said stepping back
around his desk retaking his seat to go back to work.
The doctor cocked his head curiously. “May I ask then, what this call
is for if she isn’t ill?” He questioned.
James sighed a bit. “Mostly an informative visit I should think.” He
held his quill between his fingertips. “She has some questions that I don’t
quite have answers to.”
The man paused a moment wondering if there was more to it then that but
James didn’t seem in a hurry to extend more information. “About what
exactly?” The doctor said finally curious as to what the circumstances were.
Norrington realized that as uncomfortable as the situation was for him to
talk about it allowed it was going to have to be discussed. Aislinn couldn’t
go into it blind and he really couldn’t expect her to. “The subject of
children has come up. Aislinn would like to know more about the subject in
greater detail so that she may be . . . so that we may both be prepared for it .
. . should the occasion arise that we have need for knowledge in that area.”
“Ah. I see.” The doctor said having a better understanding of the
situation now. “Do you think she might be expecting now?” He inquired.
“No . . . no I don’t think so. We have discussed the incident that
occurred when we first arrived in Port Royal . . .” James said in a low voice
after a brief pause, “I believe she’s wanting to try and become as educated
on the matter as possible in an attempt to prevent anything similar happening a
second time. I think finding herself to be so ignorant on the subject that she
wasn’t even aware she was with child frightened her a bit.”
“That’s understandable.” The man gave a nod, “Of course. I’ll
drop by this evening after dinner?”
“That would be fine.”
“James!” Aislinn said in horror as they walked into his study. “How
could you!” She exclaimed. “How could you tell another soul that I . . .
that we . . . that . . . James!” She was unable to finish a sentence or form a
rational thought being far to upset.
“There is no reason for you to be so upset about this Aislinn. If there
is anyone who can answer your questions, he can. I can’t answer them. I’ve
tried but I simply can’t because I don’t know!” He said following after
her as she paced the room turning away from him each time he caught up with her.
“This is really the sort of thing that you would ask a mother, or an older
sister about. Or some female relative, but neither of us have any here in Port
Royal . . . and I doubt your comfortable enough to go to any of the ladies who
have had children of their own to ask these things.”
“If you didn’t want to talk about it why didn’t you tell me to stop
asking! I would have stopped! I promise I would have! I didn’t know that I was
bothering you so much with my questions.” She said turning and looking at him
with panic in her eyes.
“Asilinn, calm down!” He said reaching out putting his hands on her
shoulders. “There is no reason to upset yourself like this. He is a doctor.
This is the same man who cared for you when you were ill, you don’t have to be
afraid.”
“Why on earth would you want me to talk to a stranger about such
matters? James he’ll know.” She said leaning closer in a soft voice almost a
whisper. James arched a brow looking at her.
“Know what?” She sighed as a bright red blush came to her cheeks.
“What will he know?” Aislinn stepped a little closer and whispered in his
ear. Norrington smiled and wrapped his arms around her hugging her tight before
kissing her cheek. “Darling, I think most people have figured that out. It
tends to be something that married persons engage in.” He chuckled.
“Aislinn.” James said sitting on the bed next to a pile of linens and
bedding. There were two hands on top of a pillow smooshing it down over a
humiliated and utterly embarrassed head. “You can’t stay buried in there
forever. You have to come out sometime.”
“I can, I shall . . . and never.” Said the muffled defeated words
from under the feathered pillow. Norrington arched a brow as he began to pull
back the covers to dig up the young woman. She was dressed for bed but when he
came in she found herself overcome with embarrassment and felt it best to make
herself disappear. He managed to uncover her for the most part but when he tried
to pry the pillow from her head it seemed like an impossible task.
She lay on her belly, and her fingers had a death grip on the pillow.
“Aislinn . . . it wasn’t that bad. I promise you that no one will ever hear
of it. Ever.” He said leaning down over trying to speak under the side of the
fluffy object but she quickly pulled the edge down. “Come on, come out of
there.” He said taking a hold of her sides trying to turn her over. “There
isn’t anyone here but me now. So come on, come out of your shell.” He
demanded.
James turned her over reaching up and pulling her pillow back finally
getting a view of her face, which was still red, embarrassed at what had
transpired. “There is no need for you to be so embarrassed darling.” He said
swiping the hair from her face that almost completely obstructed his view as he
leaned over her looking into her eyes. “Your questions were answered weren’t
they? He was discreet as could be wasn’t he?”
“Until he started making suggestions!!” She exclaimed. James had to
suppress a burst of laughter at the look of utter horror on her face and her
reaction. He cleared his throat and nodded forcing a serious look.
“Your absolutely right. He was completely out of line. How dare he
refer to me in any way shape or form.” Aislinn frowned feeling like James was
making fun of her now. Norrington smiled at her a little. “Alright . . . I’m
sorry. Boundaries on what ought to be discussed by third parties and what
shouldn’t could have been set in place before hand.”
“It was horrible enough that he talked about . . . bits of me . . .
like he did, but when he started talking about you . . . was it really
necessary?” She said looking at him. James smiled a little more.
“Oh I don’t know. I rather liked the bits of you he talked about.
They are mine you know.” Aislinn’s went wide and her jaw dropped a bit in
shock as she started to say something. However James quickly cut off any further
argument by consuming her mouth and wrapping his arms around her.
James was standing on the deck of a ship that was pulled into port for
some fittings looking over the plans with the officers and the carpenters
discussing the changes and repairs that were to be made. However their meeting
was interrupted by the sounds of catcalls, whistles and howling that would wake
the dead. The higher ranking men looked over to see the Admiral’s young bride
standing on he dock frowning as she looked about at the working men making the
noises at her looking over her as if she were a piece of meat. Instantly the
bosons and officers scolded and yelled at the men for their inappropriate
deviating from their work and acting like a pack of animals.
Norrington sighed as he dropped his head shaking it a bit. Of course it
was Aislinn. Who else would it be? “Here, see to these will you?” James
instructed handing over the blue prints to his second. The lietuniet nodded and
pulled the officers back into their discussions knowing the routine as the
Admiral departed the company making his way down the gangplank.
“Get on about your work!” He roared at the men who quickly did as
they were told. James sighed as he approached Aislinn taking her arm and walking
her back up the docks. “Aislinn . . . we’ve already had this discussion.
I’ve told you that you are not to be this far down the docks. Women are not
allowed past the cargo crates at the end there. It gets rather hot during the
summer months and the men work without their proper uniforms otherwise they drop
from exhaustion like flies. If you wish to speak with me then send someone for
me.”
“I tried to send a messenger, but no one would come. I ask Lord Beckett
if he would be good enough to send a boy for you but that was this morning, at
it is well after noon now. As you can see he did not hold true to his word.”
James sighed as they came to a stop and he looked at her.
“Well? You have me now, standing before you. What is it you wanted me
for?” He questioned. Aislinn reached inside her coat and pulled out a letter
handing it to James. Norrington took it from her and opened it seeing that it
had been addressed to her reading it. Arching a brow he turned it over looking
at the date before looking at her again. “It doesn’t mean anything Aislinn .
. . there are a thousand reasons that he . . .”
“He says that he was coming to Port Royal to see us in April James . .
. this is June. He’s two months over due.” She took the letter back looking
at it feeling a little flighty and a rush of panic just thinking about all the
possibilities. “Where could he be? What could have happened? Why did I get
this only today?”
“The fact that you got this letter only today is even more reason not
to worry darling.” He said reaching over and turning it as he stood beside her
showing her the date. Do you see here when it was written? In January? Six
months ago. It took six months to get here. Which means that something may have
come up shortly after he sent it to you to prevent his plans from taking place.
I’m sure there is another letter in transit telling you of his reason for not
being able to come.”
Aislinn frowned. “But . . . my father . . . he said he was coming to
see us . . . to stay for a while. See?” She said taking the letter and
shuffling a few pages. “He’s never not done what he promised he would do
before. What if something terrible happened?”
“It’s far to soon to start worrying about this now, dear. Your father
is a very important man. If something had happened to him, we would have heard
about it already. You mustn’t upset yourself so. Word will reach us quickly if
something happens to Walter Bartley let me assure you of that. All of England
will be in an uproar and we will most certainly hear of it. Alright?”
Aislinn didn’t feel well at all and she looked at the pages shuffling
them about again looking at her fathers hand writing. James could see that she
wasn’t going to stop worrying about this, and tried to think of someway he
could help ease her worry. “Here. Does he say what ship he was going to be
traveling on?” He questioned.
“Yes. Yes here.” She said shuffling to the last page handing it to
James. “He says the name of the ship and he says that he knows the Captain.
That they are old friends.” Norrington nodded a bit.
“Alright. I happen to know this ship and it’s Captain. They trade
with Port Royal, and they do come through here every few months. I promise you
that as soon as they come in, I will ask why your father canceled his voyage if
he is not on it.” Reaching out he took her by the shoulders. “But you
mustn’t upset yourself until we have some hard fact about why he did not
come.” She nodded a little. “Good. Now no more coming down the docks and
distracting entire crews away from their duties. You have no idea how much it
irritates me to know that my wife is going to be gracing the fantasies of at
least 100 men tonight.”
Aislinn blushed and looked away when he said that and he smiled hoping he
embarrassed her enough to take her mind off her father for a few moments. “Go
on. I’ll see you at supper.” He said kissing her forehead. Turning around
she walked back up the way and onto the path. Norrington’s smile faded a bit
as he looked at the page with her father’s handwriting. He wished a bit that
he had written to him instead of Aislinn, but perhaps it was only natural that
he would write to his daughter instead of her husband. And has Geoffrey said, he
couldn’t protect her from everything forever. It wasn’t his place, and
that’s not what a marriage was.
Drovers
Aislinn sat in the kitchen with the cook while she prepared dinner.
“You know your husband won’t approve of you keeping me company miss.” The
cook reminded her. “But I won’t tell him. Just afraid he might come home
early and you might get into trouble again. It seems he’s always scolding you
for one thing or another.”
“I know. But he can’t honestly expect me to just wonder around the
house by myself all day when there are others to speak to can he?” Aislinn
said with a sigh as she ate her apple. Improperly as James would say since she
ate it out right without cutting it up or using a fork.
“I think that Admiral Norrington was hoping you would host some
gatherings with the officers wives and other ladies.” The cook walked over as
she began to kneed the dough for the bread, Aislinn looked down.
“But they are all so . . . boring.” She half mumbled knowing that was
probley rude to say. “And it feels like they are constantly judging me . . .
and think less of me because I don’t know as much as they do. They make me
feel inadequate. As though I’m not . . .” She fell silent.
“Not what?” The cook asked curiously as she turned the dough and
began to kneed that side covering her hands in flour.
“Not as good as they are. They are so much better educated then I. So
much more proper then I am. It seems like I’m always embarrassing James
somehow . . . doing or saying the wrong thing.” Suddenly she felt like crying
a little. “I must be great entertainment for them . . . and James is cursed
with a wife that hardly compliments his office.”
“Now don’t go saying things like that about yourself. I’ve seen the
way that Admiral Norrington is with you, and he cares for you very much. True,
he’s under a lot of pressure, but who wouldn’t be in his station? He helps
you along, but I think you help him more then you realize too.” Aislinn looked
up at the cook.
“You really think so? I always feel like I’m such a burden to him.”
She said looking down a little.
“More of a blessing I’d say. Just imagine if he had to work all day
and then come home to one of those nagging ninnies on top of it? At least with
you he doesn’t have to worry about someone whose already got her mind set on
things and wants to pull and push him in a direction she’s already chosen.
You’re willing to follow instead of fight with him for the lead. I’m sure
that’s more of a relief then being in a marriage with one of those baggage’s
that you fear look down on you so.”
Aislinn smiled a little at the cook. She was the first one who didn’t
seem to mind that she and James were married and actually seemed to approve of
their match. “Then . . . you don’t think that our age difference is to
much?” She said softly. “ . . . strange?”
“Why should age matter? He’s a man, you’re a woman. Once your
husband and wife age is sort of a moot point isn’t it.” The cook stopped
kneading the dough for a moment and leaned over the counter looking at Aislinn.
“The good part about having an older man for you is, he knows what he’s
doing. You’re the lucky one here. The worst thing in the world is having some
young boy using you for practice.” She stood up and started kneading the dough
again. “True, men of all ages will never be experienced in all things.
They’re still going to be ignorant in some of not most areas. But there are
others, were practice does make a difference.”
Aislinn just smiled at her not having a clue at what she was talking
about. But she thought it best just to let her talk finding it most interesting
and just glad to have someone talk to her like she was another human being and
not some lower life form.
Suddenly there was a knock at the front door and the housekeeper went to
go answer it. Aislinn and the cook scrambled to get her out of the kitchen in
case it was someone who would tell James what she was doing.
Aislinn raced through the dinning room and into the hallway keeping her
composure as she closed the door behind her as though she had just been
strolling along. The house keeper hurried up to her. “Lady Norrington, Lord
Beckett physician sends word. It’s Admiral Norrington . . .” She said with a
grave look on her face.
