An hour after sunset, Cora and Dwayne stood in front of the
Emerson house. With one whole side of
the house destroyed, Lucy, decided Phoenix wasn’t so bad, even if her
ex-husband was there. Michael and Sam
packed their belongings in record time, with help from Star and Laddie, and
were loading the car when they saw the two vampires.
“I was wondrin’ when you’d be back…” Grandpa Emerson called
across the cluttered lawn, and stepped into the darkened interior of his
house. See, he said when, not if…
Cora elbowed Dwayne’s ribs as they followed the old man into the
kitchen.
Opening the door and reaching into the fridge, Grandpa
grabbed a root beer, popped the top and took a long pull from the bottle. “Ahh!”
He smacked his lips, still propping the fridge door open. The two vampires watched him in weary
interest.
“You knew. All this…
you knew about the vampires…about us…”
Cora glanced at Dwayne as she unconsciously rubbed the Bands on her
wrists. She looked back to Grandpa, and
he nodded, turning to reach back into the fridge. Reaching under his labeled shelf, he flipped a knob and pulled
the drawer out, revealing a hidden compartment.
“Yeah, I knew. You
can’t live this long and not know.
That’s part of their problem,” gesturing toward the teenagers outside,
“No respect for the past, for their elders… had one of them come to me…” He shook his head and sighed. “But what do I know? I’m just the crazy old fart, stuffing dead
animals for the Widow Johnson.” He
winked at them, and pulled out what was hidden in a secret compartment inside
the fridge. “Here, this might help with
some of your questions.” He handed Cora
a leather-bound journal, vellum pages brittle and yellowed from age.
“How did you know about us, and us not know about you? Did you know the whole time? We’ve been here… almost 100 years…” Dwayne’s
questions petered out as Grandpa moved out of the kitchen to his workshop. Opening a trap door, he led them down to an
underground library. They were
surrounded by shelves and shelves of books.
“The histories of your race… journals, diaries, scrolls,
legends. It’s all here, catalogued and
studied. This has been here since
before you moved your pack into the area.
Just dumb luck that you settled here, where we could keep a close watch
on you.” He looked at Dwayne. “Your father and the men that sailed with
him were not the only ones who survived the purges in Europe, or shared their
secrets. As some of the Templar Knights
were gifted and lived in darkness, there were others who watched over them, in
the light.”
“No, I’m not one of the original Templars…” Grandpa saw the
question written on their faces. “No,
the Brothers in Darkness were gifted with immortality. The Brothers in Light were only gifted with
longer life spans, immunity to disease.
Really helpful, that one. One
hundred fifty, two hundred years at most.
They had to protect their counterparts, the Shadows, yet remain in
society. But with those gifts came with
heavy burdens. The Shadows had to
survive on the blood of others and were banished from sunlight. While the Lights were responsible for their
care. It doesn’t sound very equal, but
it was. Still is.”
“So, I take it you’re a Brother of the Light?”
“Yep. And I still
got at least another 50 years to watch over you… I’ll be needin’ help with the walls.” He nodded up with his chin, ending the question and answer
time. “I’m an old man. Can’t do it all by myself.” Grandpa grinned and winked at them, turning
to head back up. Half way up, he ducked
down and turned his head toward them.
“Of course, you’re welcome to come here anytime. Read through them. Learn about the others… about yourself.” He pointed at the journal Cora held. “That one will be of a particular interest
to you. More legend and prophesies than
anything. But there’s some truth in
there.”
“Why was it kept apart from the others?” Dwayne asked.
“That… let’s just say it’s older than the rest. And it can have an effect on things…”
Cora opened the journal.
“But, wait, it’s in Latin…”
“That’s okay. I got
it…” Dwayne looked over the fading script and sketches. When he looked back to the stairs, Grandpa
was gone.

Dwayne and Cora stood side by side, holding hands, and
looked over their new bedroom with pride.
The Emersons weren’t the only ones who packed up and moved out. Cora and the Boys took over Max’s old house,
after a major overhaul. Gone were the
eccentricities of a delusional, power hungry vampire. Thorn had also disappeared.
Good riddance. Never did like that flea-bag. Dwayne chuckled at his mate. His woman.
His love. His.
The whole house smelled of new paint, new furniture, and new
carpets. Their room was no
exception. It was painted in a creamy,
off-white shade, carpet to match. When
no one was around to object, Dwayne went into their room and painted gorgeous
murals over three of the walls. The
sunlit meadow where he took Cora in their dream was on the wall across from the
door. Behind and across from the bed,
he’d painted the walls a matte black.
In a different finish, he’d painted erotic scenes. Couples, that mysteriously resembled Dwayne
and Cora, in various positions and stages of love making leaned against the closet
door, floated on the wall, and sat on the floor molding. He’d done the same to the ceiling, only it
was white and the erotic images were in the textured swirls.
The huge bed was the centerpiece of the room. Four heavy, reinforced square pillars of
dark mahogany marked the corners.
Wrought iron scroll work decorated the head and footboards, and wound up
and around the pillars. At the end of
the bed, they placed a small matching chest.
A toy chest. Dwayne growled as
his eyes locked on it, flickering blue.
Images of them ‘playing’ with what was inside entered his mind. It was Cora’s turn to chuckle. All
good things come to those who wait…
“Tease.” Dwayne
looked down at her with the corner of his mouth lifting, and a playful glint in
his eyes. He leaned in to kiss her.
“Jesus! Guys, get a
goddamn room!” David walked down the
hall, stopping at their door.
“We are in our room, if you hadn’t noticed…” Cora rolled her eyes. “And it’s not like we were actually doing
anything.” Yet.
“Yeah, ‘cause I’d’ve had a front row seat.” Paul yelled from the couch in the downstairs
living room.
“Okay, Boys… and girl.
Feedin’ time!” Marko yelled from
the front door. His only answer was the
sounds of four vampires stampeding up the stairs. Now that they had working toilets, they could actually eat and
enjoy real food. Sure, they didn’t need
it, but it still tasted good. Tonight
was pizza. Greasy, cheesy, pepperoni
pizza. Paul was the first one to reach
Marko and the food.
“Dude! Where ‘ya
been? It’s been like, two whole fuckin’
hours…”
“Do you how hard it is to find a pizza joint open at four in
the morning? I volunteer Paul for the
next run.” He set the boxes on the
kitchen counter as Paul flipped him off and Cora pulled out some paper plates.
“Wow. You’re really
pullin’ out all the stops tonight.”
David’s voice was dripping with sarcasm.
This coming from the
guy who sucks down Chinese noodles from the carton. “Hey.
You wanna do the damn dishes? Go
right ahead.” Cora waved her hand at
the dish cupboard. David scrunched his
face up in distaste. “Yeah. Didn’t think so. Besides, it’s pizza. You
don’t use Grandma’s china for pizza.”
“Fight nicely, children.”
Dwayne was constantly getting between Cora and David. He knew their bickering wasn’t going to get
nasty or physical. Cora and David
argued because they both liked to argue.
Plain and simple. Even if it did
get nasty, he knew David was in for a whoopin’. That wasn’t the point.
Any threat to his mate, even an innocuous argument with one of his
brothers, set off his protective instincts.
He wrapped his arms around Cora as she picked up a slice,
careful not to let any of the toppings fall.
Folding the pizza, Cora lifted it up to Dwayne’s mouth. He bit off a chunk. When Cora brought the pizza down so she
could have a bite, the toppings, still attached to the bite in Dwayne’s mouth,
slid off the dough. The cheese and
pepperoni slapped against Dwayne’s chin, splattering the sauce.
“Hey, man. That’s my
cheese!” Cora pinched the cheese
between her fingers and pulled. She put
the cheese back on the pizza, and took a bite, careful to bite through the
cheese. She stopped chewing when she
felt the rumble of a warning growl roll out from her mate. Looking up to the three Boys across the
counter, their faces were several shades of red as they twitched and tried to
hold back their laughter.
Cora looked back up at Dwayne. Red sauce covered his chin and throat where the cheese slapped
against him. Biting the inside of her
lips to also hold back laughter, she let out an amused snort, bringing his
attention to her. The warmth in her
eyes melted his irritation at the others as she swallowed her pizza.
“Not quite right… but tasty all the same…” Cora ran her tongue along his chin,
remembering the last time she laved his face.
His eyes closed at the sensation of her tongue. She pulled back. Suddenly, Dwayne was smacked in the face with the rest of the
pizza in Cora’s hand. He heard her bubbling
laughter over the Boys’ snickers as she smeared it all over.
With pizza sauce stuck in his eyelashes, Dwayne fixed his
annoyed stare on her. Stepping closer,
he pressed her into the counter, placing his hands on the flat surface behind
her. The amusement left Cora’s eyes as
he crowed her. With hard eyes boring
into her, he reached behind her.
Grabbing the slice off of Paul’s plate with preternatural speed, he
smashed it all over her face.
“Hey, man! That’s my
pizza!!” Paul grabbed a slice out of
the box. Making to throw it at Dwayne,
he switched direction; hitting David square in the face; starting a war.
**********
Clean, Dwayne lay on his back, propped up on a couple
pillows. His arm was around Cora,
holding her to him with her head resting on his chest. Puffs of warm air ruffled the springy hairs
in front of her face. She traced
invisible patterns over his chest and abdomen with the pad of her finger while
he read the old journal over her head.
“You should read this, Cor.
Some of this shit is fuckin’ bizarre, but the rest…” He shook his head and carefully turned the
page.
Cora lifted her head.
She looked from the pages in front of her back to Dwayne’s face. “Babe, I can’t read Latin. I know I took it in high school, but that
knowledge is long gone, and verb conjugation wouldn’t help anyway.”
“Then, I guess I’ll just have to read it to you.”
He kissed the top of her head.
“I’ve got a better idea…”
She sat up with a Cheshire Cat grin, looking at him through lowered
eyelashes. Twisting away from him, Cora
crawled down to the end of the bed, giving Dwayne a nice view of her perfect
ass in cheeky lace panties. He reached
over and set the journal on the bedside table.
She stopped when her hands reached the foot of the bed, and turned her
head back to Dwayne, grin taking a lascivious cast. Reaching down over the footboard, Cora flipped the toy chest
open.
“Mmm… I do love the way you think…”

I had a hard time wrapping this one up, since I’m already getting exited
