Chapter 14 – Tables Turned
Oria struggled again as his hand pawed at her breasts delightedly with a crow of delight. A shot rang off and the man slumped over her dead, she tugged her hands free and scrambled backwards away from him her eyes wide. A second set of hands grasped her and dragged her upright, on instinct she struck out with fear till she was crushed against a familiar body and she wrapped her arms around it tight.
“Bloody bastard.” Jack whispered against her ear as she clutched him desperately, that had been too close for comfort, far too close. He held her just as tight and glared at the offending dead body. His grip tightening all the more as he thought about what could have happened. He had never been worried about leaving her on her own before always assured by the strength he knew she possessed. He leaned back slightly and checked her over assuring himself that he had got there just in time and not too late.
“I didn’t think you’d come in time. I thought…” He brushed away the one stray tear that had escaped her iron tight control and smirked so there was some human fear in there. He couldn’t decide whether he was glad it was there or petrified that she had the strength to brush it aside so easily.
“I’m Captain Jack Sparrow love. I ain’t going to let anything happen to you that’s within my control.” She smiled faintly and leaned back against him resting her head on his shoulder as he ran his hands over her back soothingly, “I promised I would never let anything happen to you long ago and that’ll always stand as long as I live.” Slowly they headed back to the bed and he curled up on it with her, he knew he couldn’t leave her tonight, wouldn’t be able to leave her till she was strong enough once again to look after herself.
:/
The sun dawned late in the day but the Pearl was already on its way with a full crew and set destination. Jack glanced at Gibbs, he was still worried about the trip, the arrival, the deal, the leaving, all of it but he was still more worried about the consequences if he didn’t do something, “It’s the right decision Captain, the best one available till she’s right again.” Gibbs spoke comfortingly as Jack worried his lip.
Jack nodded slightly and glanced down at Oria, she was back to her old personality after last night’s events and appeared unaffected. He doubted she would have been the same if the man had gone through with his intentions and he couldn’t take that risk again. A pool of jealously and unrivalled anger spread through his veins that anyone but him could touch her in that way, “I hope so Gibbs but somehow I don’t think it’s going to sit quite right with her.” Gibbs smiled faintly.
“Aye, well I’d rather not tell her either, she might not be as strong as usual but I bet she’s got a mouth on her when her muscles fail.” Jack nodded slightly.
“I think we’ll be finding out anyway.” Oria glanced back at them, she knew they were doing something, she could read the direction from the stars and she knew they were going in the direction of Port Royal. She just didn’t know the purpose yet, either way it probably wouldn’t intrude on her long term plans, she drew out the piece of material with charcoal drawing and smirked. It was almost ready, that last stage, all she needed was the messenger and the ball would begin rolling. Davy Jones demise would come and Jack’s fate would be decided.
:/
The port was within sight and Jack lowered the long boat into the ocean as he scanned the deck for Oria and found her stood next to him. She smiled faintly and scrambled into the boat, he followed her swiftly after whispering instructions to Gibbs. She watched him settle into the boat suspiciously, he picked up the oars and rowed without meeting her gaze.
“What are we going to Port Royal for?” Jack glanced into the distance instead of meeting her gaze.
“I thought we might go and give Will a visit… tell him the news about Sara.” He trailed off and glanced into the bottom of the boat. He hated keeping things from her, hated doing something that he knew she was going to hate him for, but what he hated most of all was that it was the right thing.
“You’re a bad liar Jack.” She whispered as her gaze trailed over the ocean and she rested her chin on her palm as the mists off the ocean coiled about them in the chill of the night. The boat grazed the sand quietly; Jack clambered out swiftly and helped Oria out before he tucked an arm about her waist as he led her through the side streets to a small town house next to the black smith’s. The moon lighting their way and casting eerie shadows down the side-alleys making it look as if the entire Navy sat glaring out at them.
He rapped smartly on the door next to the blacksmith’s and footsteps approached slowly, the bolts slid across and Will peered out suspiciously through the crack, “Jack?” Jack grinned weakly, this was not going to be fun and motioned for them to be let in. Will sighed and opened the door to let them both pass through casting a suspicious eye over them both. He locked the door swiftly after the pirates fearing the Navy would already be on their heels. Jack glanced about the small room with a discriminating gaze. A warm fire glittered in the corner, a couple of beds neatly made up the only other furniture but for a single chair and table and a couple of shelves.
Oria stepped free of Jack and glared at him already suspicious of his plans, he avoided her gaze and turned his attention to Will, “Came with some bad news I’m afraid. Sara was killed about a week ago in a fire so she won’t be returning to lodge with you I’m afraid.” Will nodded and brushed the upset crumpling of his brow swiftly. He’d grown fond of the kid always being there, it had been lonely since she’d left and Elizabeth hadn’t visited anywhere near as frequently when she’d gone.
“I knew you shouldn’t have asked for her to join you.” Jack and Oria glanced at each other but decided not to enlighten the boy, it would take weeks for him to understand, he stoked the fire quietly.
Jack braced himself for the request fully expecting violent reactions from both, “Will, we’ve… I’ve got an ulterior motive to this little… meeting.” Time for the plunge, Jack braced himself for the explosion, “I need you to look after Oria for me for a couple of weeks.” They both stared at Jack in disbelief and he winced at the glare from Oria. So far so good, at least there was no blood yet.
“Jack I do not need babysitting!” Oria hissed furiously as Will stared dumbly between the two. He didn’t quite understand what was going on and decided it would just be simpler to say so.
“I don’t understand.” Will whispered scowling in confusion, Jack turned to him.
“Oria was injured and she’s not got her usual strength or even anywhere near it really. It’s too risky to keep her on a ship full of desperate men especially when they find out she’s got no more strength than an ordinary woman! There’s already been one attempt…” He trailed off as Oria shot daggers at him, he hadn’t expected this kind of reaction, violence yes but silent glaring. Well he wasn’t going to complain, damn sight safer if it was just glares.
“Jack she can’t stay here, what about Norrington?” Jack winced at Will’s mentioning of the name, this was the cherry on top of the cake and he braced himself for the explosion that was sure to come from Oria. If she hadn’t exploded before she would now.
“She’ll have to stay in your house all the time till she’s fit enough for her to resume her position on the Pearl.” Oria stared in disbelief at Jack who discreetly avoided her gaze as best he could and winced at the ice tipped tone as she spoke in a very deadly voice.
“Jack Sparrow, I am NOT staying here. I belong on the ocean on a ship! Not trapped in some house like a common… common woman!” Jack glanced at Will pleadingly and slowly he nodded both realising there was never going to be any consent from Oria.
“All right, she can stay here until she’s better. When will you be back for her?” Jack sighed with relief, he could have hugged the boy, he wasn’t going to though, just in case the boy got the wrong idea. After all he still wasn’t sure on the boy’s ‘status’, another reason why Oria would be safe with Will. He was too much of a gentleman for her to seduce and escape from, he had a head on his shoulders… occasionally. Either way Oria wouldn’t be able to deceive Will in her usual way.
“A fortnight. Thank you Will, I’ll find some way to repay you… How about a nice hat?” Will smiled fondly, he had to like the pirate, he was just a character unto himself. Jack turned to face Oria, he hated the look in her eyes, not quite betrayal but something akin as well as the down right fury, “I wouldn’t do this unless it was absolutely necessary. You know that don’t you?” Her gaze didn’t soften.
“A cage. You’ve put me into a cage Jack.” He smiled faintly and nodded.
“I know and I’m sorry but it’s for the best till you’re well… you again. It’s just too dangerous.” She nodded slightly but the glare didn’t ease up.
“Then I’ll stay. Just don’t expect me to be happy about it.” Jack grinned and headed for the door brushing past Oria slightly, he paused and glanced back for a moment with one hand on the handle before nodding at them both and leaving swiftly.
