“Oh my,” Abe says in a hushed voice.
The agents finally open their eyes, look up and stare in a combination of wonder and surprise. They’re standing in bright sunlight without a cloud in the sky above them and the air is still and calm while the storm they were trudging through rages a few feet away. Standing before them is a cliff that’s as high as a twenty story building and looks like a giant stone that’s been polished smooth. At the base of the cliff is the strangest sight of all, there’s a pair of metal doors gleaming in the bright sunlight. They look behind them and they can see the storm they were walking through raging just beyond an invisible barrier.
“Everyone cut your ropes now!” Abe orders as he puts action to words.
“What’s going on?” Evans asks as he fumbles for his pocket knife.
“It’s nearly noon, the ceremony has probably already begun,” Abe answers, panic tingeing his words.
“Ah crap,” Hellboy growls as he simply grabs the rope around his waist in both hands and snaps it without any real effort.
As soon as he’s free, Hellboy bolts across the clearing, dropping his packs as he races towards those gleaming brass doors bringing his right hand up, ready to strike as soon as he’s free of his burden. Abe is free a second later, but instead of following his friend, he goes down the line of men and helps cut them free as most of them can barely feel their fingers and are struggling to just get their knives out. The sound of stone banging against metal reaches their ears moments later, but none of them bother looking up to see what’s happening.
As soon as they’re free of the rope, the men follow Hellboy in order to give him backup, shedding their packs as they go. Abe finishes getting Evans free at the same moment as John manages to cut himself free and the three of them take off at a dead run also relieving themselves of the burdens on their backs. They’re about half way across the clearing when Hellboy finally batters the doors down. Not bothering to see if anyone’s following, Hellboy goes charging into the cavern on the other side of the doors.
Abe puts on a burst of speed and leaves the two men with him behind with very little effort. A few seconds later he catches up with the other men who are following Hellboy and passes them almost as if they’re standing still. Abe runs along the smooth stone corridor, torches lighting the way, the agents following as best they can in his wake.
Following Hellboy isn’t difficult since he’s making enough noise to wake the dead. Before Abe can warn him that making that much noise might not be a good idea, the merman catches up with the demon standing in a chamber with four corridors leading off of it. Hellboy takes a look around and then draws a large breath.
“This way,” Abe softly says as he runs past Hellboy.
Hellboy immediately gives chase as Abe sends mental instructions to the humans trailing behind them. They twist and turn through the maze of passage ways, Abe constantly keeping in communication with the agents and never encountering anyone along the way. The fact that there are no guards to slow them down has Abe worried but that’s the least of his concerns when the corridor they’re running down opens into another chamber with another pair of brass doors on the other side.
Abe has no time to admire the artistry of the doors depicting the god Agni in all his glory as Hellboy begins wailing on the things with his right fist. The sound of his banging is deafening in the small chamber, but fortunately it’s brief as the doors were really meant for decoration, not for keeping out a rampaging demon on a mission. Hellboy is through the doors before they even finish falling, knocking people aside as if they were nothing more than bowling pins in his quest to find Liz.
More than a dozen men attack Hellboy at once only to find themselves splayed out on the floor before they even know what hits them. Some of the men come after Abe only to find a fist in their face and their worse nightmare suddenly becoming reality in their own minds. A second later, the human agents arrive and after taking a second to assess the situation, they put away their guns and join in the fray with the unarmed men.
“LIZ!” Hellboy yells at the top of his lungs as he throws another Agni worshiper at a bunch of others coming to join the fight.
“RED!” Liz screams back, fear very evident in her voice as it echoes through the cavernous chamber.
Hellboy lets out a bellow like angry wild animal as he throws the last of the worshipers away as if they were rag dolls. He charges through a clearing of bodies towards the next wave and charges through them like a bull in a china shop sending people flying as he does. Abe keeps up as best he can and once he’s clear of the men attacking them he can see Liz.
On an elevated platform, a nude Liz is chained onto an altar with her arms above her head and her legs spread open wide. She’s fighting her bonds, though it’s obvious that it’s doing her no good and a look of horror and something else is on her face. Her naked body is engulfed in blue flames and standing almost between her legs is none other than Agni himself.
He’s at least ten feet tall, engulfed in red flames, his skin is completely red and has a face on each side of his head. He’s reaching for Liz with all seven arms as his three legs carry him closer to her prone body. His cock is sticking out from under his robes and is at least as long and as big around as Hellboy’s left arm. Hellboy lets out another roar of anger as he charges towards the dais, drawing Agni’s attention away from Liz and the god doesn’t look amused if the anger in his black eyes are anything to go by.
*WHO DARES DISTURB MY MATING WITH MY CONSORT!?* Agni demands, his voice reverberating through the cavern and while he doesn’t speak English, everyone can understand him.
“I DO!” Hellboy shouts just before he launches himself up onto the platform, landing right next to Agni.
*BE GONE, DEMON!* Agni snaps as one of his arms lashes out and backhands Hellboy the width of the chamber, slamming the demon into a nearby wall. *THIS WOMAN IS MINE!*
“LIKE HELL SHE IS!” Hellboy screams back as he picks himself up off of the floor and starts to run back towards the dais.
Abe can see that this can only end in disaster if he can’t figure out how to stop Agni. He holds his hand out with his fingers hyper extended again, only barely aware that the fighting around his has subsided as everyone is stopping and watching the battle unfolding up on the platform. It takes only a few moments for him to find Agni’s weakness but by that time Hellboy has gotten back up on the dais, picked up by Agni and thrown the entire length of football stadium sized cavern.
Hellboy, aim for the ruby in his chest, Abe silently instructs his friend. That’s how he’s staying in this plane.
Abe knows Hellboy heard him because he sees The Samaritan get drawn out of its holster as Hellboy runs back down the length of the chamber, worshipers roughly getting pushed out of the way. Hellboy launches himself up into the air as Agni kneels down between Liz’s legs and she’s struggling to get away, screaming for all she’s worth as her blue flames mix with Agni’s red ones. As the arc of Hellboy’s jump brings him over Liz, he levels his gun at the ruby and fires, shattering Agni’s dick into about a million pieces.
The firing of The Samaritan is nearly as loud as Agni’s howl of anger and frustration. Hellboy starts coming down feet first with the intent on knocking Agni away from Liz. Instead, he finds himself grappling with Agni’s seven arms as they both land with a bang that can be felt through the stone floor. The angry god is intent on ripping Hellboy limb from limb and has a hold of each of the demon’s appendages and his head in each hand as he rises to his feet.
*BEHOLD! THIS SHALL BE THE FATE OF ALL WHO DEFIE ME!* Agni declares as he hoists Hellboy above his head to have a good look at his audience while his arms start to pull apart, causing Hellboy to bellow in pain.
Aim for the ruby, Abe calmly instructs the other agents as they all take out their guns.
Seven guns are aimed, seven clips are emptied. By the time the last echo from the gunshots fades away, Agni is a stone statue once more and the ruby has been shattered. Hellboy is still trapped in the statue’s raised arms, but only for a few moments. After making sure that the statue of the god will never come to life again, he rips Liz’s chains free of their moorings and she eagerly wraps her arms and legs around him.
Liz fiercely kisses Hellboy as her flames leap around them and he gladly holds her close, relief pouring through him for her safe recovery. As the two lovers become oblivious to the rest of the world, the worshipers start coming out of their shock of watching their god pounded into rubble by a demon. Suddenly, one of them dressed in rather rich and elaborate robes yells something and the worshipers that are still able to fight, attack Abe and the agents.
With no time to reload, they resort to fists and pistol whipping their enemies. The worshipers quickly learn that letting Abe touch them is a really bad idea since those who do end up on the floor screaming in fear. Soon, spears and swords are brought out and Abe and the agents quickly find themselves on the losing side of the battle.
Hellboy, a little help please, Abe tersely sends his friend.
Unfortunately, Hellboy seems to have his own problems with a rather erotic twist. Liz is clinging to him like a barnacle and is currently trying to kiss him senseless while her fire dances around them. Between her rubbing her naked body against him and her whimpering and moaning, he’s starting to get aroused despite the fight he hears going on below. It doesn’t help that Anung un Rama is screaming for him to take her right then and there.
“Sweetheart, I’ve got to go fight the bad guys now,” Hellboy gasps when he finally manages to break their kiss.
“Don’t leave me,” she begs as she rains kisses along his cheek, chin and neck and he moans as he feels his blood heading south.
“Abe and the others need me,” he moans as she begins to nip at his neck and it’s not helping that Anung un Rama is going nuts that he’s refusing to do her right then and there.
“I need you more,” she whimpers just before she latches onto one of his ears and starts sucking on the lobe.
Hellboy, we need you now! Abe yells into his mind. We’re losing agents!
Let them die, Anung un Rama hisses.
Abe is so startled by hearing the demon’s voice that he’s distracted for a moment. Those few seconds is all a worshiper needs to send his blade past Abe’s defenses. The merman barely manages to move enough to avoid a fatal blow, but the sharp edge still manages to slice through Abe’s suit and leave a six inch gouge in his side. Abe’s yell of pain is heard both physically and mentally by everyone in the chamber.
With a groan, Hellboy holds Liz tighter and stumbles over to where The Samaritan was dropped near the back of the platform. With a great deal of difficulty, he manages to pick the weapon up and stagger back towards the front of the dais. Liz is completely oblivious to what he’s doing as she continues to assault his senses with her kissing, nipping, licking, rubbing and moaning.
“Who do I shoot?” Hellboy asks the thin air, knowing he’ll be heard.
The one in the fancy robes, comes Abe’s answer, his mental voice tinged with pain.
Hellboy looks around in a bit of a daze as Liz increases her attack on his sanity. It takes him a few moments to locate the guy in question, but it’s pretty obvious who the ring leader of this lot is. He’s standing behind the others, screaming something at the top of his lungs that Hellboy can’t understand and waving some kind of staff. Quite frankly, Hellboy could care less what the guy is saying as he levels his gun at Mr. Fancy Pants, rolls his eyes in pleasure when Liz bites into the large muscles on the side of his neck and fires.
The silence following the last echoes dying after Hellboy shoots is nearly as deafening as the shot itself. Holding the gash on his side, Abe watches in amazement as the worshipers start looking around them in dazed wonder as if they’ve just come out of a long sleep. Abe quickly realizes that’s exactly what’s happened and would breathe a sigh of relief if he used his lungs for that sort of thing as the men start to drop their weapons. A quick glance over at the ring leader shows that there’s now a gory mess where the man once stood.
“Either target practice worked,” John gasps, holding onto broken off spear in his thigh. “Or he hits things better when he’s not really trying.”
Abe looks up at his red friend and sees that Hellboy’s turned his attention back to Liz. They’re passionately kissing again and Liz has managed to strip him of his duster already. There’s no doubt in Abe’s mind what those two plan on doing, so now it’s time to get everyone out of there and to leave those two in peace.
The men still whimpering in fear are relieved of their nightmares with a touch from Abe while the agents, who can still walk, help those who can’t leave the area. After everyone is out and accounted for, Abe sends Evans, who by some miracle is the only one of the agents that doesn’t need stitches, outside to retrieve the packs they dropped. He returns several minutes later empty handed.
“The storm’s moved it,” Evans states, shaking the snow from his parka. “I can’t see more than a couple feet in front of me and the way it’s coming down, the packs are good and buried by now.”
“Very well,” Abe says as he heads for the exit. “I’ll be back shortly. Try to administer first aid to those who need it.”
Holding the compress one of the braver former worshipers gave him firmly to his side, Abe steps out into the blizzard to retrieve the packs. He goes out into the raging storm five times to bring back all of the packs and by the time he’s done he’s exhausted. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have time for the luxury of sitting down and resting, instead he gathers his pack from the others and returns to the men waiting for him.
By the time he returns, one of the agents is already dead. While saddened, Abe isn’t surprised since Slate got run through the gut with a sword. With a sad hum, he pulls a sheet one of the former Agni worshipers provides over the body.
Abe looks around a room that would have to be a combination dining and sleeping area with sleeping pallets on one side and tables and benches on the other and while it’s nowhere as big as the ceremony chamber, it’s still a fairly good sized room. Most of the men who aren’t agents are still in a state of shock and are just sitting around with stunned looks on their faces. A few of them are trying to help the injured men as best they can and a couple more are over by the fire heating up something in a big pot.
Evans hovers by Abe, not sure what to do next since he’s treated everyone to the best of his abilities. Abe gives the agent instructions to help sew up the gash in Abe’s side and while Evans looks like he’s about to lose his lunch, he follows Abe’s directions to the letter. As soon as Abe’s wound is tended to, the merman turns his attention to the people still in need of medical attention.
While the other agents have scrapes and bruises and a couple have some nasty cuts that will need stitches, the first on his list is John with the spear head still stuck in his leg. After lying John out on one of the tables and washing his hands as carefully as possible, Abe starts to work on him.
After removing the boot and cutting away John’s snow pants, Abe carefully examines the wound and then gives the agent a shot of pain killer. Within moments, John visibly relaxes as the drugs take effect and Abe proceeds to carefully clean the area with iodine. Once he’s sure it’s safe to, Abe surgically removes the spear head from John’s thigh with Evans help. Fortunately no major blood vessels have been hit so it’s simply a matter of sewing the agent up, giving him a shot of antibiotics and then bandaging the wound.
Abe and Evans move John to one of the sleeping pallets and make sure he’s comfortable before moving on to the rest of wounded. One by one, the remaining three agents are patched up and then given pain killers and antibiotics. As soon as the last of the agents are taken care of, both John and Evans wearily sink onto one of the benches.
A bowl of something steaming is pushed into each of their hands by one of the former worshipers and Abe barely examines it before he gratefully sips it. Evans is too tired to question it and follows Abe’s lead, finding that while it’s not the best tasting stuff in the world; the broth is warming and filling at the same time. After drinking nearly half the bowl, Evans looks around at the people in the room.
John is sleeping but the other agents are sitting nearby each with a clay bowl in their hands, all of them sipping their broth. The former worshipers come in two varieties, those that appear to be shell shocked and those that are seeing to the comfort of the agents and their fellow country men. Evans watches them as the helping men all look strained and are barely holding it together, but they continue to make sure everyone is warm and fed.
“What’s the deal with these guys?” Evans quietly asks Abe. “One minute they’re fighting us, the next they’re feeding us. What’s up with that?”
“The man that Hellboy killed was controlling their minds, forcing them to fight us,” Abe softly answers. “Once his control over them ended, they immediately stopped fighting.”
“So, they didn’t know what they were doing, huh?” Evans questions.
“I’m afraid they knew exactly what was going on, but were helpless to stop it,” Abe sadly replies. “To make matters worse, these men are the husbands, brothers and fathers of the women that were killed. They watched their loved ones die horrible, painful deaths and were helpless to stop it. And to head off your question about why some of them are staring into space and the others are helping us, they’re all in shock, it’s just some of them are handling it better than others.”
“So what exactly happened in there?” Evans inquires. “Why did shooting the ruby turn the god into a statue?”
“That wasn’t truly the god we saw, but a statue of him,” Abe responds. “The ruby was charged with mystical powers that allowed the essence of Agni to come through from his plane of existence into ours and inhabit the statue. By destroying the ruby, we severed the portal Agni was using to be in this world. I’ll know more when I have a chance to examine the remains of the high priest and the statue. I’m sure there’s probably some ancient text lying around here somewhere, but for now it will have to wait. Once you’re done, I want you to lie down and get some rest.”
“What about you?” Evans asks and then drinks the last of his now tepid broth.
“I don’t need to sleep as much as you do, I’ll keep watch over all of you,” Abe assures him. “Once the storm passes, we’re going to have to radio for help. Now, go get some sleep.”
“Sure,” Evans readily agrees as he staggers to his feet. “I’m beat. But something’s bothering me.”
“Why were the other women burned to death but not Liz?” Abe asks for him.
“Yeah,” Evans replies, looking down at the blue man still sitting on the bench.
“Liz is a pyrokentic,” Abe states. “This means that she can not only create fire from nothing, but she can control it just by her force of will. She can not be burned by fire though she sometimes loses control of her powers and when that happens, you do not want to be within a mile of her. Literally.”
“And I thought she was the cook,” Evans tiredly chuckles.
“Yes, we know,” Abe replies, a smile tugging on his lips. “If Liz ever offers to make you roasted chestnuts, I suggest you decline.”
“Oookaaaay,” Evans responds, a bit confused. “Where are Liz and Hellboy anyways?”
“I imagine they’re probably have found a quiet place to settle down for now,” Abe says. “I’ll check on them later. For now, I want you to get some rest. And that’s an order.”
“Yes, sir,” Evans concedes and heads for a sleeping pallet.
Abe watches as the other agents join Evans and John on more pallets, staying close to each other and the fire as possible. The native men slowly follow suit, the able bodied ones helping the shell shocked ones before finding sleeping spots of their own. Soon the room is filled with the sound of slow, steady breathing and the occasional snore. Once he’s sure everyone is asleep, Abe returns to the ceremony chamber and gets quite a surprise.
“Oh…my.”
