As spring came around, Warren found himself almost relaxed. He still had no idea just where things were going between him and Crystal. Of course the school was still buzzing with the usual talk since Valentine's Day when most of them had seen them kissing. Gavin seemed to be watching him even more closely than ever even if he did not pry. Freon had been almost completely knocked out of the picture really no matter what stunts she pulled.
Crystal had been to his house several times and he had paid her visits when he was not working. They had kissed a few more times but it was a lot different than his first girlfriend. The intimacy or making out was not demanded at all. It was actually a lot better since he could still find things to do or talk about. Mostly, it seemed that both of them were focusing on music. A lot of their tastes matched though it was fun to make a big deal about "fighting" over some artists or songs.
That was one of the things that almost became a ritual when they arrived at school. Crystal always had a CD player and headphones somewhere in her bag. Between classes or at lunch she would often pull it out, put a CD in and hand it to Warren. Depending on the song, their banter would become playful or argumentative to appearances. Then he would put his own CD in and turn the tables on her.
Warren was aware that the S.S.S. had taken a keen interest in what was going on with him, but for once Stronghold revealed he could use what few functioning brain cells he had and did not dig into it. Magenta could not be bothered and Zach followed his girlfriend's lead. Layla wanted to pry but she was ever the Hippy and refrained. The Popsicle was about the only one that kept trying to get him to talk about it.
Save the Citizen games were becoming a lot more intense. As it had been since the start of the year, the senior class was alone for their games and the arena was changed each time to add more obstacles and yes, even bystander Citizens to make things a lot more difficult. The games certainly made the control over their powers vital. Lash and Speed turned up solely for the games and otherwise were not permitted loose in the school outside their assistance.

"Hey, Firestarter."
Warren looked up from his book. Crystal let her bag clunk down on the table followed by her usual lunch cooler. Blinking, he sat up a little straighter just as she flopped down beside him.
"Hey. You're kinda early..."
She shrugged and wrangled her pack to the floor by her feet. "Yeah. That little fight yesterday busted our table, remember?"
He had actually forgotten that. Another little incident with Speed and Lash. For once he was able to stay out of it. Stronghold had detention with them. In a moment, Gavin joined them, sitting across from Warren. That meant he was protected from two sides at least. He put his book aside as Crystal slid the CD player across the table to him. While she began to eat, he pulled the headset on and hit play.
After a moment or two, the S.S.S. arrived. Glancing up, he acknowledged them before turning his attention back to the music selection. It was really very good. A mix of several "darker" themed songs paired with faster rock and some music that screamed of speed and action. Plus, listening to the music meant he did not have to listen to the rattling from the rest of Stronghold's group.
Crystal reached over to pull one of the earphones away from his ear.
"Like it?"
Hitting the stop, he pulled the set off and set it on top of the player. "Not bad."
If anything, she grinned and nodded before turning to dig into her bag. Tugging a CD case out, she popped it open to look inside before taking the player and removing the CD. In a moment, Warren found the package handed to him and he blinked in surprise. He glanced at the simple black paper cover slip under the plastic. The titles and artists of every track were written in a metallic silver pen.
"That's what you've been doing."
The grin grew a little as she nodded. "Yeah. Figured out your tastes in music, made a few lucky guesses and mixed them together."
"Thanks, Crystal."
"Just enjoy it, Warren."
Smirking, he rolled his eyes before sliding the case into his bag and pulled out a text. Crystal followed suit once the player and headset were put away and they got to work. Neither noticed the looks from the S.S.S. even if Gavin was aware of it. Even if he was not supposed to use his power, he made sure that when the rest tried to ask, neither Warren or Crystal heard it. Finally, the others gave up.

It was beginning to warm up enough that students could go outside after lunch again. The air was still very chilly but not enough to keep Warren, Crystal and Gavin inside any longer. The grass was a bit brown but still sported some green from before winter. It had a dry sort of crunch to it when they sat or lay down. Not the quiet of their spot to the side of the school was shared with low talks including pauses as they read the things Gavin wrote.
"Crystal, what are you doing after graduation?"
Looking up from her notebook, she blinked.
"I'll go on to the Military Academy most likely. Get some college. After that...not sure. What about you?"
"I haven't decided yet."
Crystal folded her arms across the notebook to lean forward over her legs. "Not going with the flow and becoming a superhero like everyone else is?"
Warren snorted. Crystal just shrugged.
"You're the first one to ask if I was going to be a hero. Everyone else always thinks I'll be..."
"...like your father. Yeah, I've heard. Then again, most here are brainless idiots."
"Why the military academy?"
She shrugged. "I'm kinda following my father's footsteps. But not because he's making me. I really like the Air Force. I may just enlist. Being an officer does not really appeal to me unless I get to fly a fighter."
Warren watched her intently as she spoke. There was a look in her eyes and the way she spoke and smiled that told him more than anything else.
"I mean, I can control the wind, but to actually fly...in a fighter... The fire-power and precision it takes. Heroes are expected to be powerful on their own, to save the world with what makes them something else than just plain people. But to actually put your life on the line not because you have the power but because you can make a difference by yourself with your actual skills... I love the way that sounds, how it could make me feel."
Listening to her, he was finding himself imagining what that would be like. To fly a machine, fight in a battle. In the past months he had heard many war-stories from her father and his friends on the visits to her house. It had sparked an interest in such stories from history. Almost as bad as his enjoyment of science fiction and horror save that it was real.
"Have you ever...flown before?" he asked almost quietly.
Crystal blinked and came back to earth--so to speak--to look at him. Smiling, there was that ornery spark in her hazel eyes again. Unfortunately, she did not give any solid answer to him before turning back to the notebook she was writing in. He glanced at Gavin, who only smirked and looked back to his comic book to leave Warren eaten with slight curiosity.
