Chapter 15 - Rush
“WHAT DO YOU MEAN, NOT HERE
ANYMORE?” Rick immediately exploded as panic started to
constrict his chest. If Ardeth hadn't held
him back, he would have most likely flung himself at the Med-jai, not
caring about the consequences.
His lover's hands on
his shoulders slightly calmed Rick, but he was still gripped in fear
for his son and Jonathan. 'She must have abducted them. We have to
leave. We shouldn't have stopped.' He felt guilty for not having been
there, when his son went missing.
“Abdul. What happened?”
“The Englishman decided to
leave yesterday evening. I tried to hold him back, but I was only
told to keep him as a guest, not treat him as a prisoner. I didn't
think, that I had a right to hold him back. As for the child, I
assume, that he went with the Englishman, since two horses were gone
in the morning.”
The rest of the
conversation was relatively muddy to Rick's ears. He had been flooded
by relief, when he had grasped the concept, that Alex hadn't been
abducted by Nefertiri. Until it suddenly dawned on him, that the two
of them were now without protection, completely vulnerable to
Nefertiri's attacks.
Dismissing his warrior,
Ardeth turned around to Rick and immediately took him into his arms,
when he saw the shocked look on his lover's face. He stroked Rick's
hair in a soothing manner, not caring about the Med-jai around them,
who were slowly going back to their everyday lives.
“Shh...Rick. It's gonna be ok.
Do you have an idea, where Jonathan and Alex might have gone?”
Since his face was
still buried in Ardeth's shoulder, Rick's
answer was muffled, but the Med-jai understood him none-the-less. “At
our house in Cairo.”
Trying to regain his
composure, Rick slowly stood up. It
wouldn't help Alex or Jonathan any if he was weak at the moment.
Ardeth's love filled eyes looked at him
with concern, but he simply shook his head. There was no time for his
fears, they had to go.
They mounted their
horses, spurring them to a swift tempo as they rode out of the
village. Their rides were still tired from their travel, but they
hadn't had the time to send for new horses. If Nefertiri got hold of
either Jonathan or Alex, they were in really deep shit.

Rick jumped off his
horse and stumbled into the house as soon as his horse halted.
Searching every room, he called out to Alex, but his son was nowhere
to be found and neither was Jonathan. When he sunk down onto the
living room couch in desperation, Ardeth who had followed him sat
down in front of his lover.
“Rick, maybe he has gone out.
Your son spends a lot of time at the library, doesn't he? He might be
there.” Reaching up and placing a soft, reassuring kiss on
Rick's lips, he murmured. “Don't despair, my love, we will find
him.”
“Dad.” Ardeth had just
taken his hand off Rick's cheek, when Alex burst into the room.
Immediately jumping up from the couch, Rick tightly encased him in
his arms and pressed a glad kiss to his forehead.
“Dad, you're choking me.
Hello, Ardeth.” Alex was in a good mood, which assured Rick
that Nefertiri hadn't been here yet. 'Now we only need to find
Jonathan and everything will be okay.'
Keeping his thoughts to
himself, he said instead: “I told you to stay at the camp,
Alex. And where the hell is Jonathan?”
“I don't know. I just followed
uncle Jon, when he rode away at night. I thought, he would take me to
explore Cairo with him, but when we arrived here, he vanished and
hasn't come back to the house yet. He said something about visiting
old friends and that I was too young to go with him. It's unfair,
dad. I always get left behind, while...”
Silencing his son by
putting a hand over his mouth, Rick processed the information he had
received. 'Jonathan, you complete idiot.' As far as he knew, his
brother-in-law had either been kidnapped by Nefertiri or was gambling
at a bar.
“We have to search his regular
haunts. If he isn't there, Nefertiri has most likely kidnapped him.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Have you seen Jonathan? Where
did he go? When did he leave? Was somebody with him?”
Rick was sick of the
ever-repeating questions and of the greasy, dirty bar owners
expecting payment for their help. Fortunately most of them cooperated
as soon as they caught sight of Ardeth. It astounded Rick, how easily
his gentle lover could turn his whole stance to signaling danger,
could let all the warmth fade from his eyes, scaring the people they
talked to with their coldness.
“We have looked everywhere. I
don't know where else to look.” Rick sat perched on the edge of
a dirty table, irritation and worry clearly expressed by his whole
body.
“It seems, Nefertiri has taken
him.” Ardeth said. “We have to stop her, before she can
complete the ritual. As soon as she kills him and spills his blood,
everything will be too late.”
“Ok, let's go then. Alex you
ride home and wait there.”
“Dad. What if she hasn't got
uncle Jon and comes to the house?” Alex really didn't think so,
but he was sick of getting left behind, because it was too dangerous,
he was too young or other such crap. And he knew his dad well enough
to know, what strings to pull.
“Dammit. Ok, Alex you ride
with me.” The three of them stormed out of the seedy bar,
quickly mounting their horses. Rick had the distinct feeling, that
something bad was about to happen, but he forcefully pushed the
thought away.
Nefertiri roughly
shoved her bound and gagged sacrifice off her horse. Capturing him
had really been too easy. The drunk idiot had practically stumbled
right into her arms, mistaking her for a cheap whore, since her face
was hidden. 'Disgusting.'
Dragging him up from
the ground, she roughly pushed Jonathan towards the temple entrance.
He was struggling lightly, but with his hands and feet bound, he
didn't stand a chance against the strong and determined woman.
Nefertiri purposefully
strode through the temple, not paying attention to the gleaming gold
ornaments around her. 'My goal is near. Finally after thousands of
years I shall rule like I was meant to be.' Pausing for a second, she
stared at the hole that gaped in the ground, where the mosaic had
been. Such a pity that those fools escaped from it.
Following the plain
hallway she finally arrived at the chamber that contained the mirror.
Nefertiri tied Jonathan to a pillar in one of the room's corners,
effectively preventing his escape. Turning around, she focused her
attention on the mirror, that glowed with a strange light as if it
knew, that it was about to be used.
Her delicate hand
lovingly slid over the surface of the mirror as it showed her the
wish she desired. Herself perched on the throne of the pharaoh,
the double crown of Egypt decorating her head, while thousands of
slaves bowed to her greatness. 'It is time for my wish to come true.'
