This
Chapter here is a bit longer as I wanted to “bring forward” the whole story a
bit. After all it would be nice if Will and Jack could spend in the following
chapters some time together on your own, don´t you think? ;)
Chapter 16
On the next
morning they sat with the other crew members on deck, quite busy peeling and
slicing a huge pile of potatoes in their middle.
Jack
glanced at Will.
“How did
you sleep?”
Will´s eyes
looked red and tired. He shook his head. “Not so well… I always feared…” he
swallowed. “Forget it. And you?”
Jack
sighed. “Not so good either. What do you mean – what did you fear?”
Will threw
another sliced potato into a huge kettle. “Naa… Forget it.“
As they
were not alone, Jack did not ask further.
Captain
Canterbury came to them, smiling. “Great, guys… Glad we have you here!” He
patted Jack´s shoulder. “Jack, can I have a word?”
Jack got
up. “Sure..”
They went
over to the rail.
The Captain
looked over the sea. “We´re making good way, I think we´ll arrive in Savannah
earlier than planned…”
He turned
to Jack. “Listen, the next trip we´ll make from Boston will be quite a hard and
long one, up the Arctic Ocean. I might need some more crew members, so if two
or three of your men want to join, I would not mind.”
Jack´s eyes
lit up. “Sure! I will ask them, and maybe…”
He
silenced. His first thought had been to offer his and Will´s help, too. But
then he remembered Will´s eyes when he had tried to go down inside of the ship.
He changed
the subject. “Arctic Ocean… Sounds quite demanding…”
Phileas
Canterbury sighed. “It will be a hell of a trip. I hope I´ll make it.” He
stretched and his face clearly showed pain. “See, Jack… I worked on ships since
I was 13. I am getting old, and the last months were not very lucky for me.” He
laughed. “Don´t think that travelling with these science guys is an easy thing.
I was bitten by some huge lizard on an island in the South Seas and the wound
hasn´t really healed. And if that wasn´t enough, I got the spear of a native
chief of the neighbour island into my shoulder because we stepped into some
sacred territory we didn´t knew about.”
` And I
always thought piracy was dangerous` Jack thought but of course did not say
aloud.
“I wish I
could retire but I think for two or three years I have to continue. My wife and
I bought a small house at the East Coast and could live happily ever after, but
my son died a few years ago and left his own family without any money. We keep
them and…” He shook his head, wiped his eyes hastily. “Sorry, Jack. What am I
doing here, telling you all this… I won´t bother you, bet you had some troubles
of your own…”
Jack let
his hand run over the rail. “It´s a beautiful ship, it´s yours, right? Can´t
you sell it to someone? To the University?”
Canterbury
shook his head. “No chance. I tried… They pay us well, but they can´t buy a
ship at the moment. Tried elsewhere but had no luck.”
He sighed.
“So, keep in mind… If some of your men want to join – just tell me.” He patted
Jack´s back again and left quickly.
Jack was
lost in thoughts the whole day through. Sometimes he did not answer even when
Will asked him something.
The night
came and Jack and the other men went down to the crew cabins again while Will
laid down in the small shanty. Jack did not knew that he hadn´t slept one
single minute the night before, and it seemed that he would not get any sleep
now either. He was not scared being on the ship, alone in the shanty. It was
something else.
He lied
awake for hours, tossing and turning on his narrow pallet.
Then he got
up, went on deck. The sky was dark, filled with thousands and thousands of
silvery stars. Slowly he walked over to the stairs that led down to the crew
cabins. Now at night the way down looked even darker. Will´s heart was beating
so hard and fast that it nearly hurt. His trembling hand grabbed the handrail
when he made one step down the stairs. Another one. Another one until he was in
the large cabin, filled with bunk beds and hammocks.
The men
down in the ship were sleeping. But the ship, like every ship made of wood, was
not silent. It was aching, it was moaning. Will had to press his lips together
so that he would not let the tiniest whimper of fear escape.
He reached
the floor. It was pitch dark now. He leant against the wall, trying to calm
down. Then he sat down on the last step. Took a deep breath. And although the
fear threatened to make him panic, he felt better than in the safe shanty on
deck.
“Will?
Will, is that you?”
A voice in
the dark.
Will held
his breath.
“Jack?”
A dark
figure got up, walked towards him.
“What has
happened, Will… How did you manage to go down here…” He sat down beside Will,
put his arm around his shoulder. “You are shaking…”
Will
swallowed hard. “It might sound crazy…” he whispered. “But I could not stand
being on deck while you are down here… I always feared that if something would
happen to the ship, I would be up there and you would be below deck, that would
be terrible… I could not sleep… I just had to get here…”
Jack pressed
him close to his body. “That was so brave of you…” he whispered. “And… how do
you feel down here…”
Will shook
his head. “Not so good… The sounds the ship makes…”
Jack smiled
in the dark, let his hand run over the wall. “Yes… Doesn´t it sound as if the
ship is breathing? Like a living thing…”
Will pulled
a face. “The image doesn´t make me feel better…”
Jack
laughed silently. “Come… Let us go upstairs for a while…”
They went
to the bow, watching the ship parting the water, creating foamy waves that
sparkled in the starlight. Jack closed his eyes, let the wind tousle his hair.
“Isn´t
it wonderful, Will…” he said softly. “This ship, you know… It’s not just
a keel and a hull and a deck and sails… That's what a ship needs but what a
ship really is… Is freedom…”
Will
caressed his hand on
the rail.
“I know…”
he whispered.
Jack turned
towards him.
“Could you
imagine staying on the `Discovery`? I mean if you would not have to sleep down
there in the dark cabin…”
Will
sighed. “I am not very pretentious, but staying in the shanty… I don´t want to
sound ungrateful, but it´s not so fantastic there…”
Jack was
silent for a while.
“What about
the Captain´s cabin then? Deck-levelled… Large… Huge windows…”
Will´s eyes
widened. “I don´t think the Captain will let anyone of us sleep in his cabin…
At least I would not, if I were him…”
He held his
breath. “Jack, you are not thinking of…” He blushed, shook his head. “I am
sorry. Of course you didn´t think…” He glanced at Jack. “I mean… You…”
Jack
laughed. “No. I am not thinking of commandeering the ship that saves us. Don´t
worry.”
He squeezed
Will´s hand.
“I am
thinking of buying it. Canterbury wants to sell it so that he can retire.”
Will
gasped. “Buying it? But we don´t have any money! We don´t have anything! Even our
clothes are borrowed from the crew…”
He thought
for a moment. “Are you thinking of getting to that island we planned to go to?
Where the Captain of the `Endeavour` might have hidden the treasures he kept
from the Governor?”
Jack shook
his head. “No. The treasures might not belong to the Captain. But they do not
belong to us either. I want to start a new life with you, Will. And I don´t
want to build it on
something…
Illegal.” He rolled his eyes. “An honest pirate. Yes, come on, laugh at me…”
But Will did
not laugh.
“It sounds
wonderful, Jack… And I think, yes, I could live on this ship with you. In fact,
I would love to.”
He glanced
over to the wheel. The helmsman was not looking, so he took Jack´s face between
his hands, kissed him.
“But, as I
said, we have nothing, we…”
He stopped.
Stared at
Jack.
Jack
nodded.
“Yes…” he
whispered. “The plantation.”
Will
entwined their fingers.
“You would
have to go back to Virginia… Face your past… And who knows if they would
acknowledge that the plantation still belongs to you, who knows if you could
sell it…”
Jack
nodded. “I´ll see… I never wanted to go back, but I know if it all works out it
will be worth it… For us… I just have to try.”
He sat
down, his back against a pile of ropes, looking up to Will.
“Would you
come with me? I have to admit, I would feel better if I have you with me…”
Will sat
down beside him, smiled. “Try to stop me…”
He leant
back, looked up to the stars. “And if you manage to buy the ship, what do you
want to do then? Continue the expeditions for the University?”
Jack
smiled. “Well, I heard it´s a hard job and it can be rather dangerous…
Dangerous but honourable… Yeah… If you would agree… Then, yes, I think this
could be a future for us…”
Will put
his head on Jack´s shoulder. He was silent for a while. “Yes…” he whispered
then. “Sounds like a good future… A very good one…”
Jack closed
his eyes. “I´ll talk to Canterbury tomorrow. And from Savannah we´ll make our
way to Hopewell, that´s where the plantation is… Agreed?”
When he did
not get a reply he looked at Will. Smiled.
Kissed his
cheek.
“Sweet
dreams, my love…” he whispered.
He knew
they would surely get bemused looks in the morning, but he didn´t care. He
leant his head against Will´s head and a few minutes later he was asleep, too.
Phileas
Canterbury stared at them.
“Are you
joking?” He looked from Jack to Will, back to Jack. They sat at a huge desk in
his cabin after Jack and Will had asked if they could have a word with him.
“No… You
mean it, right? You honestly have a plantation, and you honestly want to buy my
ship?”
Jack
nodded. “I know it sounds absurd… You don´t know us at all, we are just a few
guys you picked up on an island… And I could understand if you don´t believe a
single word we are saying…”
Canterbury
got up, walked up and down for a minute, looking at them from time to time.
Then he sat
down again.
“I believe
you.” He shrugged his shoulders, grinned. “I don´t know why, but I believe
you.”
He was
silent for a while.
“Okay,
here´s what we´ll do. Stop me if you don´t agree. We still have about one or
two weeks until we arrive in Savannah. You can work here on the ship, help the
crew as you already do so well. You´ll get a reasonable pay – not much I fear-
and in Savannah you can buy some new clothes and travel to – where was it?
Hopewell? Nice name. Arrange your financial things and come back to Savannah.
We will stay there for about ten days anyway until we travel on to Boston. And
if everything really goes well…” He closed his eyes. “I could leave you there
and travel north, to Rockport, my home… And finally…” He sighed.
He
straightened up, looked Jack firmly in the eye.
Then he
reached out his hand.
“If
everything goes well… It´s a deal.”
Jack took a
deep breath and they both shook hands.
“It´s a
deal.”
Will saw
the ship now with new eyes – his future home. If everything went well. He even
tried to sleep down in the crew cabin, but mostly he got up in the middle of
the night, slept in the shanty or on deck. He walked around on the ship,
looking into every corner, touching furtively every rope, every sail. Jack
smirked when he watched Will. “Are you two familiarising with each other?” Will
smiled. “I think so…”
The days
went by with lots of work on the ship. Will and Jack both had recovered so much
that they worked now as hard as the rest of the crew. One day when Will had a
some free time he sat on deck, absent-mindedly watching George, the scientist
with the thick glasses, who scribbled down notes, three jars in front of him
filled with the big bugs whose names Will could not remember. An empty sheet of
paper was blown over the planks and Will caught it. He took one of the pencils
that was lying around and just for fun began to make a small drawing of the
bug.
“Time for
dinner, guys!” the Captain shouted. Will got up, wanted to scramble the sheet
without even looking at it anymore to throw it overboard. George caught his
arm. “Hey! What´s that?” Will laughed. “Nothing… Just killing time…”
George
unfolded the paper, looked at it. “That´s fantastic! Where did you learn that?”
Will
shrugged his shoulders. “Nowhere… I used to make drawings when we made the
weapons in the smithy… But it´s really nothing special…”
George
thought for a while. “Could you do some more of these? Usually we wait until we
get home to the University because we don´t have anyone with us who can draw,
but, wow, that would be great!”
Late in the
evening Jack walked over to Will who was busy drawing. When no one looked he
planted a kiss on his head. “I am so proud of you!” He glanced over to Will´s
model. “Just make sure this stays inside, okay?”
Will looked
up, winked. “All right…”
Then he
bent down again, adding lovingly a few more black hairs to the drawing of the
impressive spider.
And a few
days later the first sea gulls circled the ship, hoping for some fish to be
thrown into the water. Phileas Canterbury smiled. “Soon we´ll reach land… Have
you ever been to Savannah?” Jack and Will shook their heads. “Ah wait and see…
You will love it… Hey, I can get you two rooms in one of the best hotels in
Savannah. My sister runs it.” Jack grinned. “So that the money you pay us stays
in the family?” Canterbury roared with laughter. “Exactly! But I´ll talk to
her, she´ll make you a very good price.”
Jack looked
up to the sky. “Still we don´t want to spend too much. We have to buy clothes
and everything… One room will do.”
Canterbury
chuckled. “Thought so.” He smirked when Jack and Will blushed. “Guys - I might
be old, but I´m not blind.”
He left,
leaving Jack and Will behind who looked at each other quite embarrassed. Will
scratched his head. “I didn´t think we were that obvious…” Jack grinned. “Well,
Canterbury is not blind, as he said, and not stupid either.”
He touched
Will´s hand. “Can you imagine? You and me… In one hotel room… No one else
around…”
Will took a
deep breath. “I can´t even tell you what I imagine right now…”
Jack
swallowed. “Come, let´s get some work done, or it will be even more obvious
what I think right now…”
And on the
next morning, when the fog lifted and the sun came out, they saw a faint line
on the horizon. The coast of Georgia.
