Colt wandered aimlessly around the mini-mart. Grabbing this, feigning interest in that, waiting for the line to thin so he can get what he'd really gone in for. Condoms. Why do they have to be behind the register. Why do you have to announce to the world you're active? Your size. Your need for them - - likely soon. Ugh! Even when they're not your adults, they're still nosy and creeping you out by their curiosity.
"Got everything?" Troy asked after providing a defibrillator to his friend's movement in the form of a jump-scare.
Colt spun on his friend, ready to demand that he never startle him like that again, but that would tarnish his skills as a ninja. He's 95% marked due to grandpa's morning, and sporadic, tests throughout the summer days. He sure could use a summer away; his nerves have been next level lately. Was dating always this exhausting?
He waved for his friend to follow him to the counter. Colt set down a Coke, bag of sour cream and onion chips, a honey bun, and a pack of crispy M&M's that he snagged while at the counter. Clearing his voice, he said in a mumble. "And a regular box of condoms."
"Sorry?" The woman asked, leaned over a bit. "You have to speak up."
Colt sighed through his nose; using his eyes he muttered. "Follow the eyes."
The cashier looked at Colt with concern. Was he trying to gently rob the place? If that was the case, she was going to gently thwart him from doing so, with pepper spray and a firm press of the silent alarm.
Troy caught on, then spoke up for his friend. "A pack of smokes, please."
"Aha! Right! Please show some ID, or no."
"I want a box of condoms!" Colt snapped.
The small scatter of customers peeked over by check-out to see who had made the loud request. Must be prom season, they reasoned. The voice of the asker was awfully young.
"Is that all?" She asked. Grabbing three boxes, she asked. "Large, regular, or small?"
Colt silently declared never to enter this particular mini-mart again. Well, at least he wouldn't if that particular employee was working.
"Why're you buying condoms and lube? You and Geri break up?" He yelped when Colt's fist heat-seeked his shoulder. He rubbed the tender area. "It's a logical question. I mean, there's no way you're gonna have sex with her." He corrected himself. "Not at this stage, anyway. Right?"
"What's so wrong if we do?"
Troy scoffed. "She must have an incredible internal repair system post-op."
"She's not, but... I don't know. We'll figure it out."
"You'll figure it ou.. Colt, there is no "figure it out", you just have one option."
The weight of the bag suddenly seemed that of an elephant that's currently carrying another elephant. He hoisted it up so that he's carrying it rather than holding it.
"Is this out of guilt because of that attack at school?" He then asked out of curiosity.
"No. That doesn't even make sense."
"Well, whatwhat then?"
"Believe it or not," he stopped in his tracks to umpire his friend with his words. Forehead to forehead, noses nearly touching, as he loomed over the slightly shorter. "I really do care about her in all relationship aspects. So, if we're both ok with it, then we're gonna progress as we see the need."
Troy hated to break it to his friend, but his need isn't thinking straight.
...
"Hi, honey," his mother greeted when seeing her second son walk through the door.
"Hey," digging in the white plastic bag, he pulled out a pastry. "Bun?"
"Sure." She caught the tossed sweet.
"Tum Tum send you on an errand? Will I be endangered eating this?" She joked before partaking in a bite.
"Naah, just was hungry while I was out."
"I hope you ate some food, too."
Colt snickered. He's got a bag full of hide-the-intention, and she's hoping he had Boston Market before sweets. He wondered if he would be that delusional as a parent? He poured himself a glass of milk, and took a Swiss Roll from the assortment. The condoms he hid in the waistband of his boxers under his shirt.
He quickly passed through the living room, up the stairs he hurried to his bedroom, where he hid the goods. The beautiful thing about a bed with slats is that people think that what they see is what's there. Who would take the time to assume there's something precisely placed on a wooden plank and the mattress? Not many. Colt hoped he hadn't lucked out by how smoothly it all went - - minus the heart attack when purchasing it. He'd felt naked back there, like everyone saw his why and with whom. It was not a comfortable feeling. Sex and using the bathroom. No one was ever to see those personal moments in your life.
His phone vibrated; he picked it up from the bed, and looked at the screen. A smile spread across his face; Geri sent him a picture of a spider in her bathroom sink with a vomit emoji. Next was a video of it struggling through soap bubbles: Rinse and repeat was in the text. They just don't build girls like Geri. She's just cool. Most girls wanna send stupid hearts or corny one-liners: Miss U. Heart U. Thinking about you, bae. Hip as he was, for the life of him, Colt wasn't trendy enough to allow anyone to call him that.
G: What's the dress code? Knife and fork, or just grabbing stuff?
C: Undecided. What are you in the mood for?
G: ...Well the second thing, Chinese sound good? I'm hurting for a Lo Mein.
C: Ok. See you at six.
G: Later.

Tum Tum watched Rocky stuff his foot into a sock before that same foot tucked itself away into his sneaker. He decided then to ask. "Why'd you agree to go on a double with Colt? What do you get out of it? More importantly, what does he get out of it?"
"Free meal out and a fun night out. I've been saving so much that I forgot what fun was like. Socializing away from home or school." He tugged his hair back then slipped on a hat. After debating the look mentally, he removed the accessory, then proceeded to pull his hair back. Perfect. "I forgot what fast food tastes like."
Tum chuckled. "I could have bought you a Happy Meal, Chuck."
Rocky offered his brother a belligerent look for the Charlie Brown-level hopelessness he perceived him. But he remained silent.
"You look like a vampire." Declared the youngest Douglas.
"I do not." Insisted the accused bloodsucker.
"Wear orange. You never wear orange." He tossed his stash of Skittles up and down, watching the little multicolored candies dance about in the Ziplock bag.
Rocky, watching the actions of his youngest brother through the mirror, mischievously prayed that the Variety Gods would have the bag open, spilling the candies all over Tum Tum. Maybe one or two would even go up his nose, smiled the older Douglas. A Happy Meal. Right. Little brat. He'll likely miss Tum Tum most of all, once he moves out. He's certainly the most fun of his brothers to play games with.
"Rocky.. real-talk.."
The older teen paused his intended departure. Tum Tum doesn't 'real talk'. The deepest conversation he's ever initiated was about where they would go on family vacation, since it was his turn to pick at the time. Some summers they go on vacation as a family, grandpa Mori included, because their dad has time off. And each time that happened one of the kids would choose the location. So, interest peeked, he awaited the subject.
"Are you really not freaked out by Geri? Not even a little bit?"
"No. Why should I be?"
Tum shrugged his shoulder. "It's just that... I get that whole thing, y'know.. about being in the wrong body, but.." He sat up; fingers picked thoughtfully at the sealer. "Even once everything is said and done, she's still essentially a boy. Like, her chemical make-up is male." He ate a grape-flavored candy. "It's spooky. Like that whole 'Wolf in sheep's clothing' thing."
Rocky was about to say something akin to a "You're nuts" style brush-off. But, he silenced that urge; instead, he gave his honest thoughts. "You are right, but, it's not something to be afraid of. Geri isn't a guy emotionally or mentally. To her, there was never any male that existed. So, she's not undercover to avoid being teased because she's a gay boy, who wants to date without ridicule or scorn. Does that make sense?"
"Sorta."
"Tum, Geri was a girl from the start.. relationships had nothing to do with it. She made that clear when she chewed-out dad."
Tum Tum chuckled. He thought that was epic. She didn't cry. She hadn't huffed or whined. She even had a bit of humor of teasing in her tone. It was cool.
"I'm positive every transgender person feels that way."
Tum Tum nodded. Then he frowned. "I guess I'm freaked out more for myself than them... I think, even if I found a Geri, I wouldn't date her, because I'd be afraid people would think I'm gay. Not anything bad about them, but just me."
Aah. The ever sought after Social Acceptance. Rocky nodded. "Maybe that's what keeps life so hard for trangenders, other's feeling afraid for themselves if they find out about it, and think they'll be labeled LGBTQ."
"Yeah."
"So, any other questions or concerns?"
Tum Tum shook his head.
"Ok. Later."
"Later. Oh, and depending on where you go, bring me something back."
"We're going to Red Dragon."
"An an egg roll, thanks."
"Egg roll. Got it." He started to leave but paused.
"And an egg foo young."
Rocky raised his brow.
"Over a small Chop Suey."
"Would you like to come with us?" For all that, the kid may as well.
"No way! Mom's making smothered pork chops, try to stop me eating that. Plus, euw, I don't have a date."
"Sit at a different table."
Tum Tum shook his head, then gave his brother a gestured: "Now, beat it" with his thumb pointing to the exit.
"This is a surprise," Sam Douglas commented when seeing his eldest son pass through the living room. "You haven't been out of the house in a while."
"I'm going on a double with Colt; I wouldn't have agreed, but he's paying, so..."
"I didn't even know you were seeing anyone."
"There's a lot of stuff about me that you don't know." He disappeared into the kitchen, finishing his sentence when he exited. "You know I was almost sued last year."
Sam alerted to that statement; he was beyond shocked by that! "Sued?! By who?" He got up from the armchair, ready to suit up and go to battle for his son.
"Remember that guy who tried to kidnap us with his buddies?"
His father thought that over. They arrested a lot of people that night. But the men who'd assaulted the sitter and tried to abduct the kids weren't amongst them.
"That nerdy guy with the curly hair sent them home after they botched the abduction." Seeing Colt appear at the top of the stairs, he was going to say: "It's about time" but his father continued hunting for information. He supposed dropping a bomb like that now was bad timing. "Oh, um, he wanted to sue me for premeditated manslaughter."
"What?! But they tried to abduct you?! This is insane."
Colt thought so, coming in at the tail-end. What the heck was his brother ruffling their father's nerves with?
"That was my line of defense. They had guns, after all!" He grabbed his car keys. "Anyway, we settled. I gave him all the money I'd saved up for an apartment. He was satisfied. All the good it did him; I had him arrested for it, and he ratted on his buddies." To Colt, he says. "Let's go. Bye, dad."
"Bye." Colt said following his brother out the door.
They climbed into the car.
"What was that about?" He asked his brother.
"Oh, that goon Fester Bellamy tried to sue me because I went a little 'overkill'," he made air quotes. "With the self-defense."
Colt through back his memory, he doesn't recall where the third guy was. He did hear something in the background while he was beating up the surfer and grunge guy.
"I kinda noosed him, then strangled him by dropping my full-weight over the banister with the other end." Rocky started the car. "And instead of just landing on the floor, I made it tighter by climbing it, then tying it off. Eventually he'd of blacked out and hanged himself, I guess."
"Wow... I wanna sue you just from hearing it. So he settled?"
"Yeah, why do you think I'm not in an apartment by now? All the jobs I work... I had to start from scratch. Two years worth of savings - - gone."
Colt just watched his brother, then his expression turned to bewildered. "Let me just say, the going out of my way to get a rise out of you ends today, you latent serial killer."
Rocky scoffed. "Yeah, right."
"Seriously. I'm sleeping with both eyes open, from now on."
Rocky shook his head chuckling. Colt was being ridiculous. It was heat of the moment!
"Seek help, bro."
"Enough."
...
Geri and Brina listened to the Douglas brothers sharing tales of extraordinary summer adventures; thwarting evil schemes; training in harsh heat conditions; gardening. The Douglas family are quite interesting. Brina had no idea they were mixed. It had her crushing on Rocky even more. Geri talked about her summers in England, sometimes her family vacations there, mostly they remain in the area and go to the beach. Brina often goes to her aunt's house with her sister. She lives in Arizona; she has horses.
The conversation over a shared dinner of: dumplings, noodle dishes, rice, and egg drop soup - - despite the weather in L.A. - - consists of movies, new shows that came out, older shows that have returned for another season. All but Brina watch Stranger Things, and they speculated over how Vecna would be defeated and who it truly was, if anyone once human.
They hit the theater and watched Sonic 2. It was very entertaining. Rocky said he missed the original voice actors for Sonic and Tails, but Knuckles voice, and given accent, was cool change. The date was at an end now. And after Brina was dropped off first; Colt and Geri exchanged a glance with each other. Now or never. This was happening.
Colt cleared his throat. "Umm, Rock', could you drop Geri and me off at Krispy?"
"After al we'd ate you've got room for donuts?"
Geri intervened. "Krispy Kreme is liquid edible, we've got room."
"Ok." He still thought they were nuts. But as the car approached the shop, he swung in.
"Umm, you go ahead home. We'll walk back." Colt informed.
"Are you sure?" He thought that was an odd situation, but then he remembered how much he liked to end the night alone with his date for the good night kiss. It's better not to be watched, especially by family.
When the couple exited the car, he started away. Not yet for home, he had to stop back at the eatery to grab Tum Tum's order. Luckily he fronted him the money for it.
Colt and Geri fled their drop off to cross the street. They went down one building to a nearby motel.
The woman behind the desk gave the couple a scrutinizing eye; however, doing her job, she gave them the key to room 12.
The couple were in each other's personal space instantly behind the closed door. Their hands touched here and there; the AC hummed telling them not to worry about the elevated temperature. The bed caught their combined weight readily; it sank in as Colt's hips ground down. Geri let out a breath of pleasure; this groping session far surpassed what they'd done through Lord of the Rings. This was no-one-is-home connecting. Out-of-state-no-pop-ins connecting. Their hips certainly hoped so as they humped and ground into one another. But the urgancy slowed once their clothes for the public became clothes for the personal. Nothing but the thin material for undergarments between them and flesh.
Colt's kisses lavished his girlfriend's collarbone; the strap of her bra went in between his teeth and he used his mouth to yank it aside to gain assess to her soft shoulder, his kisses then trailed to her slightly exposed breast. His hand squeezed the other lump of flesh, his fingers snuck up under the fabric, his touch whirled and lightly pinched it's finding.
Geri snapped out of the euphoric cloud long enough to whisper to her exploring lover. "Colt, we should talk about this." And she didn't so much mean the overall, but the how. He wasn't thinking clearly, and she barely had her thoughts together like she had earlier. It was all planned out, what she would say, what they would do with that being explained. But this was manic. Freestyle. Not in the plan. And too good to think anymore. She was just fogged stupid by pleasure. It's pretty much been a never for getting this far. She had one serious boyfriend, it didn't end well.
She whispered for more, just before Colt devoured her in a kiss.
The air was heavy and hot. The AC may as well been a paper fan operated by someone who was over it. Geri was completely gone once he'd unsnapped her bra. She threw it to the floor; suddenly cold from Colt moving away. She watched his imagine removing his boxers, the clothing hit the floor beside her discarded item. He was stunning nude. She hasn't seen a naked guy since Sex Ed at school, and that was years ago.
Their bodies pressed together again, and the want was escalated. They were both enclosed by the passion that crept up and closed in. Their hearts raced as one; their breaths danced like frantic whispers of wind; the shared body heat could make the earth's core sweat. It was deep and heavy, not scalding. Their uncovered flesh pressed in gnash, pops and pounds. His body sought entrance desperately.
Colt paused to grab the condom and small bottle of lubricant. Sweet orchid scented. Sliding it on, with help, he then lied himself back over her. However, something changed right then...
...
"Please don't cry!" Colt begged. "I'm calling Rocky, ok? He'll pick you up." Colt hurried into his clothes. "Please, I'm sorry." He said for the hundredth time. "Don't cry, Geri."
Geri was sobbing heavily; her clothes had been rushed on. She didn't want to be touched or even looked at by Colt right now. This was a bad idea. She was a fool to believe otherwise.
Colt had his phone in hand; Rocky picked up, thankfully, quickly. "Rocky, can you please ask questions later; please come to the Saints Bridge motel and pick up Geri for me. Please, it's an emergency." Hearing a yes, he sighed with relief. "Thank you." He owed his brother the world for all he's done for him lately.
And after an hour of playing chauffeur for the couple; he sat in his brother's car explaining what had happened.
Everything was going along great. But when he was ready for the finale leg of the pulse... Geri's tucked away made a very firm appearance against his. It freaked him out, scared her. They broke out into a shouting match, then she burst into flames. Because that's what a crying girl was in his mind. A poor soul on fire that he can't put out because he caused it without meaning to. Why his brain couldn't keep up with his body he doesn't know.
But he'd give anything to take back what had just happened.
