All that could be heard was the sound of silverware as two figures ate in
utter silence at the long dinner table. Norrington’s eyes were decidedly fixed
on Aislinn whose own eyes remained on her plate never once looking up. It seemed
she was doing her best not to look at the admiral at all costs. The look on
James face seemed to express that he wasn’t exactly pleased with her at this
time, but he hadn’t addressed it as of yet.
James finished eating first and sat back in his chair watching her as she
continued to eat her own dinner, sipping his wine. It caused Aislinn to feel a
bit uneasy and made it harder for her to eat. Yet still she made sure her eyes
didn’t come into contact with his. Finally, she felt as though she had had
enough to eat and she lay her utensils aside indicating that she was finished.
When the servant came out to clear her dishes she asked if there was
anything else she could get her and Aislinn politely said no thank you. Her
voice unintentionally squeaking a little bit. She cleared her throat excusing
herself and repeated her decline. Before she had a chance to excuse herself from
the table, James started to speak.
“So where have you been this week.” He inquired taking a drink of his
wine. Aislinn grew silent as her eyes moved downcast. “Two invitations two tea
you missed, without even so much as a word to your hostesses. There was some
concern that you were ill, and even more concern that you weren’t.” He
starred at Aislinn a moment, “Rudeness is considered to be more devastating
then illness and disease in certain circles dear.”
Reaching out he put his glass down on the table. “You weren’t here.
The housekeeper has informed me that you have gone out each morning and returned
home perhaps moments before I have.” He looked up at her again. “So where
have you been.”
Aislinn was quiet and twisted her napkin in her lap in her fingers as her
body shook a little in nervousness. She hadn’t exactly been behaving properly
like she was supposed to be, exploring and catching fish in streams. Not to
mention not being where she was supposed to be when she was supposed to be
there. “I asked you a question Aislinn. Please be good enough to answer.”
James said after another moment of dead silence.
“I hadn’t had a chance to see the rest of the island . . . since you
were working I . . .” She lowered her head a little feeling ashamed, “I
thought it would be a good time to wonder Port Royal on my own and see what I
hadn’t seen.” She said softly
Norrington looked at her another moment, “Have you gone off the beaten
paths?” he inquired referring to the roads and other reformed areas of the
island where civilization was. Obviously he wouldn’t approve of that. Aislinn
hesitated to answer. “Have you?”
“Only a little ways . . .”
“You must NEVER go into the uninhabited areas of the island, Aislinn.
It’s bad enough you have gone out into the town on your own unescorted, but to
go into the uncivilized parts of the island is completely asinine.” He sighed
rubbing his temples slightly. “I think it would be best if you hosted your own
tea and invited the women whom you insulted by not attending theirs after you
accepted their invitations.”
“Yes James.” Aislinn said submissively thinking it best not to make
him even angrier with her right now.
It wasn’t so much that James didn’t trust Aislinn, it was more as
though he knew she had a tendency to be pulled into things that felt like fun.
After the first few times he squished her fun, it would be only natural for her
not to tell him everything she had found to do. So the next morning, he made
show of leaving the house before dawn as usual, and waited.
As suspected, right at dawn she came from the house dressed in rather
informal attire and bounded down the walkway heading into town. James arched a
brow at this and followed after her careful not to follow to closely that she
might see him.
Aislinn’s foot steps were swift knowing that Stephen would be waiting
for her next to the brook. She had to tell him that it was there last day
together, especially since James had forbidden her to go off the beaten paths of
Port Royal.
Coming to the tree line, she looked about to make sure no one was
watching her, then quickly hurried through the trees. James frowned and sighed
as he watched this. He had a suspicious feeling that she was escaping into the
uninhabited parts of the island, but for her to return to them after he warned
her not to was nothing sort of defiance. Quietly, he continued to follow her to
see what she had been up to.
The young woman hurried through the forest trees and bushes, seeing
Stephen sitting next to the water waiting for her. The young man smiled and
stood seeing her approaching. Aislinn walked up to him trying to catch her
breath. Stephen’s smile faded a little bit. “Are you alright? Aislinn?
What’s wrong?” He asked putting his hand on her shoulder and tilting her
forward slightly to help her breathe better.
She nodded a little bit. “Yes, I’m alright. I just need to catch my
breath.” She said putting her hand on her chest. “I just . . . I don’t
think that I can come see you anymore.” She said with a frown and sadness in
her eyes. “I’ve neglected my responsibilities, and insulted several people
that I shouldn’t have.” Soon Stephen’s smile faded as well.
“But . . . that can’t be true Aislinn. We have such fun when we spend
time together. I was going to teach you how to swim, and how to fish with a line
and pole. You wanted to learn how to swim, don’t you remember telling me you
were afraid of the water because you didn’t know how?”
Aislinn frowned and nodded, “I know . . . and I want more then anything
for someone to teach me how . . . but . . . I don’t think I’m permitted to
learn how. I think it’s improper for me to.”
Stephen sighed and took her hands in his, “Aislinn . . . your not old
enough to be worrying about that sort of thing yet. What’s proper or improper.
You’re young . . . you should be doing things that are fun that make you
happy. There’s time to become ‘proper’ later.”
Aislinn felt ill to her stomach when she felt the way he held her hands,
feeling his thumbs caressing the back of her hands. “Stephen . . . there is
something I need to tell you . . .” She said quickly her body shuttering.
“Something I should have told you . . . long before now . . . .but . .
.somehow I . . . I didn’t . . .”
Yet before she could tell him, the conversation came to an end. “Boson
Gray.” Both the young man and young woman looked up to see Admiral Norrington
standing nearby beside a tree with a dark look on his face. Aislinn’s eyes
went wide as she pulled her hands from the young mans. She felt light headed and
couldn’t draw a breath. The young boson didn’t really see any sort of danger
here, he didn’t know what was going on and looked at the Admiral.
“Admiral Norrington? Yes Sir?” He said standing at attention.
James eyes were squarely on Aislinn for several moments before he spoke
to the young man again. “As I understand it, your ship is undergoing repairs
until Friday. I hardly think that your work is getting done with you no where
near the docks. Step too.” The Boson realized that he was in deep trouble for
shirking his duties. “I’ll discuss your conduct later. Get back to your
post.”
“Yes sir!” Quickly he turned on his heels and ran as fast as he
could, disappearing out of sight.
Still, James eyes remained on Aislinn never once moving or blinking.
Needless to say, she was scared and shivering a little knowing that he had told
her not to leave the paths of Port Royal.
“James . . . please . . . please don’t fault him . . . the fault was
mine. He didn’t know I was married . . . he didn’t know I was your wife. I
was about to tell him. He was teaching me how to fish, . . . that’s why I
missed the tea invitations . . . I came to learn how to fish . . .”
“Stop.” James said. “Aislinn, there are a world of things I could
say to you right now. Scolding, reprimands . . . it is even in my rights to take
a switch over your back if I so choose. Finding you have been stealing away
whilst I was down at the docks to spend time unsupervised with a boy.” He
looked away a moment with his hands clasped behind his back. “I can’t even
begin to describe to you the incredible rage that is within me right now.”
Even though he was completely and utterly infuriated, his voice was calm and his
demeanor was extremely well kept. “The absolute anger, disappointment, and
just complete and utter distaste for what I have found that you have been doing
here today.” He paused another moment before looking down. “Which is why . .
. I’m going to tell you to go home right now Aislinn . . . and believe me when
I say, that there had better not be one detour made on your way. Straight home,
no stops.” Aislinn’s eyes were wide and she was shaking a little. “Go.
Now.” He commanded.
Quickly she gathered her skirts and almost ran happy to get away from him
and his temper that seemed like it was going to explode at any time and she
didn’t want to be in the line of fire of it.
In the quiet darkness of their bedchamber, James lay over Aislinn nestled
between her thighs. Holding her wrists in his hands he held them down against
the mattress under her pillow. The Admiral looked down at her as his hips thrust
hard against her thighs with deliberate movements, plunging his throbbing
manhood deep within her quivering body. Aislinn whimpered with his vigorous
manner with which he took her and her back arched a little in protest. Yet James
kept his steady firm movements, he didn’t seem as concerned with her
discomfort as he usually was, there was something on his mind and he seemed to
be quite irritated. Everytime the thought past his mind, his thrust inside her
became a bit more forceful and harsher causing her to cry out. This made James
realize what he was doing and calm down a little easing his movements a bit.
After a while he began to reach his climax and his thrusted a little
faster deep inside her. Leaning down he bit her neck just slightly, and arched
his back so his thrusts would be a bit deeper with each stroke. Aislinn arched
her back as much as she could, trying to accommodate his readjustment. Then, she
felt him push her wrists deeper into the mattress and twist them slightly, and
then all at once his teeth sunk deep into her skin as he pushed himself deep
inside her with one hard deep thrust that rocked her body pushing her down into
the mattress below. She gasped a little unable to make a sound or breathe.
Norrington held her there for what seemed to Aislinn like an eternity before
finally easing back letting some of his weight off of her. The young woman
almost gasped for air when he did, and his teeth unlatched from her skin and his
hands unwrapped from her wrists.
Violated as the only word that could describe how Aislinn felt right now.
Norrington wasn’t usually so rough, almost mean with her. Her breasts heaved
against his chest as he himself was a bit out of breath from his vigorousness.
After a moment he pushed himself up and rolled off her licking his lips a bit as
his mouth felt a bit dry. Aislinn reached for the sheet and pulled it over her
turning on her side with her back to James, her arms crossed over her chest.
Norrington wasn’t exactly satisfied with the experience. Not with her
reaction, nor with his own behavior towards her. Usually it would be easy for
him to go to sleep, but not this time. His mind was to restless, and he was to
irritated at to many things, mostly with himself. Rolling over he reached to the
floor and grabbed his britches pulling them on and headed for the door grabbing
a shirt as well. Slamming the door behind him he went for a walk. The sound of
the door caused Aislinn to jump and her body quiver as she pulled her knees to
her chest in the fetal position and closed her eyes tight covering her face with
her hand to stifle her tears.
“Needless to say it was a great surprise to see you Geoffrey. You
should have written to tell us you were coming.” James said sitting in the
study with his friend. “Another two weeks and you would have no doubt run into
storms. The patrols are reporting nasty weather around the islands.”
“So I’ve heard.” Geoffrey said holding up his glass as James
refilled it before setting down the decanter and taking his own seat.
“You’re looking quite well. Not to mention the fleet. Everything is looking
excellent, in top fashion. You really whipped things into shape.”
James smiled, “It would seem that way wouldn’t it. You wouldn’t
believe the mess I found things in when I got here. The East India Trading
Company may be up to his nose in money and trade but it has absolutely no sense
of order or military order whatsoever. Not to mention the way . . .” Suddenly
a sound from the hall stopped the conversation and both men’s attention turned
towards the door. Aislinn was walking passed wearing her cloak and hat on her
way out, accompanied by one of the servants. When her eyes met James’, they
instantly turned downward looking almost hurt and ashamed and Norrington’s own
eyes looked away as well as he took a sip of his brandy. Aislinn’s steps
hastened and she made her way out of the house closing the front door behind.
Geoffrey had witnessed the entire scene and finally had to say something.
“Are you going to tell me what the hell is going on or do I have to nag at you
like a woman until you break?”
The Admiral looked into his glass, “I’m sure I don’t know what your
talking about.” He said taking another drink.
“Oh bull.” Geoffrey said bluntly. “I’ve been here for two days.
She hasn’t said a word, not one blasted word allowed or to herself. That look
that just passed between the two of you . . . spells out that something went
terribly wrong, so what was it?”
James sighed as he ran his hand over his face taking a moment realizing
he had to talk to someone and Geoffrey was perhaps the best one in the world,
the only one in the world to talk to about it. If he kept it inside a moment
longer who knows what the consequence was going to be. “Every since we landed
on the shores of Port Royal, I had felt she was making progress. She was
starting to fit in, she was making progress she was managing to mingle among her
peers. Her first social event she attended, Aislinn managed to receive
invitations from nearly every officers wife in the fleet to tea. Things were
going well, I couldn’t have been more pleased with her.”
Norrington paused taking another drink of his Brandy. Geoffrey waited a
moment before prodding him onward, “Then what happened?” He asked.
“About a week before you arrived, I received well wishes passed on by
two officers for my ‘ill wife” who apparently didn’t arrive at the
appointed time for the social calls she was supposed to make. Assumptions of
course, a factious way of saying that they had received no word at all that she
wasn’t going to be attending. When I confronted her about this, she said that
she had been out ‘exploring’ the island and had forgotten about the
engagements. Of course I scolded her for this, Aislinn has had a tendency to
forget protocols from time to time . . .more often then not and so far if she
has been warned she usually doesn’t repeat the offense.” He remembered a few
times on the ship and rolled his eyes. “Usually.”
“I get the feeling that this time she forgot again.” Geoffrey said
reading the look on James face. A dark look over took the Admiral’s face as he
finished his glass of Brandy and reached for the decanter and filled it once
more.
“I followed her. The next day, I made show that I was leaving to go
about my daily business and then followed her to see where exactly she was
stealing off to each day. Low and behold, I found that she was not only going
into the uncivilized parts of the island where she was specifically warned
against going . . . she was spending each full day with a young man. Whom she
says was teaching her how to ‘fish’.”
Geoffrey sat there starring at his friend a little dumbstruck at his
revelation. “Who?” Was all he seemed to be able to say.
“A boson’s mate. Who should have been at his post working.”
Norrington said.
“Who had the gull to . . . steal away with the Admiral’s wife? Did he
have no sense of self preservation?” Geoffrey said in shock.
“She didn’t tell him!” Norrington said still a little amazed
himself. “Aislinn never even said she was married. Not a word about being a
married young woman crossed her lips. Afraid that she would lose her ring in the
water while she was ‘fishing’ she left her wedding ring at home.”
Geoffrey ran his hand over his face. “God, James I’m sorry. I never
thought she’d be the type. Especially coming from the convent to be running
around behind your back with other men . . .”
“No . . no, it was all perfectly innocent Geoffrey. Your right, she was
raised rather strictly in a convent setting and you’ve no idea what it took to
. . .” He sighed not wanting to get into that. He sighed.
“What’s bothering you James?” Geoffrey asked.
James looked into his glass a moment before his eyes shifted up towards
Geoffrey, “The way I’ve been treating her since this happened is
unacceptable. But . . . it started before this. Long before this . . .”
“When did it start?”
Norrington paused another moment. “When she lost our baby.” He said
looking towards his friend again. “It isn’t her fault. She doesn’t even
know that she was ever carrying our child. I’ve kept it from her. I felt it
would be best.” His eyes shifted back down towards his glass.
Geoffrey sighed with this news as he looked at James. “You’ve been
living with this secret barring it by yourself all this time?” He could see
why things were building to this point, “No wonder your angry James. Who
wouldn’t be? It isn’t fair.” Norrington looked up. “It isn’t fair to
you, and it isn’t fair to her. Let her share in your loss.”
“It’s a little late now, don’t you think? The time for that would
have been when it happened, not months after the fact.” The Admiral said a
little horrified at the thought of telling her now with the added fact of having
to tell her that he had kept it from her. “I told her that the doctor didn’t
know why she was ill, I plainly lied to her when I knew the truth.”
“Well, it was a mistake James. We all make them, your entitled to make
one every now and again too you know.” Norrington shook his head in
disagreement feeling as though this one was far to big to try and correct.
Geoffrey wasn’t about to let him flee from it however, “She needs to know.
You need to tell her. You said it yourself, that your keeping it from her is
affecting how you treat her. Can you look me in the eye and tell me that you are
perfectly treating her as she should be treated if you feel she truly has not
wronged you in someway?”
“She hasn’t. Not really. She’s still learning her place socially
but she is picking up things quickly, and giving it her best.” Norrington
said. Then he sighed. “But I’ve hurt her . . . terribly in the last week . .
.” his eyes shifted away. “I’ve not meant to. It’s as though I’m
someone else. Someone I don’t like. I’ve loathed to touch her intimately . .
. it hasn’t been that I haven’t wanted to exactly . . .” Norrington stood
from his seat and walked to the window looking out towards the docks. “When
she was first taken ill . . . I stayed away from her. She was crushed, and felt
as though she did something wrong.”
The Admiral glanced back at Geoffrey, “Do you remember Marguerite?”
He nodded, “She took the opportunity to fill Aislinn’s inexperienced ears
with the idea that I was being unfaithful.” The Admiral looked back out the
window. “Sorted that nonsense out. Efforts were made after that so that
Aislinn wouldn’t feel that way again.” He fell silent for a moment. “But
since that day when I found her in the clearing with that young man . . . I’ve
hurt her. I see it in her eyes. You saw it too.”
Geoffrey watched the Admiral for a moment before finishing his drink and
setting down the glass standing from his chair. “I’m taking a room at the
Inn.” He announced plainly. Norrington looked over at him. “The two of you
have serious issues to discuss and you’ll need the privacy of your home in
which to do it in.” He walked over to Norrington putting his hand on his
shoulder. ”As your friend James . . . it is the best advice I can give you.
This is something you can’t bare alone . . . and it’s something that she
must be made aware of.” He patted his shoulder once more before turning to
have his things packed and moved to the inn.
James thought about the advice his friend gave him and looked back out
the window to gather his thoughts.
Aislinn sat on the chair in the adjoining room to their bedchamber
starring glassy eyed into oblivion in dead silence as James sat next to her
holding her hand. It seemed like an eternity before any sound or movement was
made. “I knew.” She said in a shallow voice. It was a ghostly like whisper,
almost in a far away sense. “Somehow . . .” She said still in shock as the
word seemed to trail off.
“With . . . everything that had happened, and the travel from London .
. . I thought it was best at the time to not tell you. It was poor judgment on
my part.” James said feeling a tightness in his throat hardly able to say it.
“You had the right to know.”
The young woman was still starring off as if she was remembering how she
felt the days after she had collapsed in Lord Beckett’s office. Norrington
could feel how cold and clammy her hand was and her faced looked as white as a
sheet. She started to talk almost in a trance like state, as she was still
shocked by the news. “I did know . . . I could feel it . . . it felt like
there was a hole inside me . . . like some part of me had slipped away, an
emptiness where there wasn’t one before . . . I thought I was imagining it . .
. I thought it was just . . . but I knew somehow . . . somehow . . .” her
words trailed off again.
James watched her reaction and felt sick to his stomach realizing that he
wasn’t the only one that was feeling the loss. All this time he thought that
he had been the only one who had really lost something, but how could she not
have been apart of it? It was her body, she was carrying their child of course
she felt it too. What was worse, she didn’t know what she was feeling for
sure. The Admiral wrapped his arm around her and pulled her against him into a
tight embrace kissing the top of her head as he stroked her hair gently holding
her close. “Forgive me, please.” He whispered.
Aislinn closed her eyes as tears quietly escaped and slid down her cheeks
and her body shook and began to ache. Finally she relented and wrapped her arms
back around James resting her head on his shoulder seeking solace in his arms.
Both just wanting to find comfort in each other and share in their loss
together.
