Vacation was over, it was back to Sky High for the remainder of the year. Christmas had been...unusual to say the least. The snowball fight and following kiss were what seemed to come back and haunt Warren. He was not sure just what to think either as he had not seen Crystal again until school started up again after New Year's Day. She and Gavin sat at the same table as always but he was unable to join them due to attention from the S.S.S.
Although he had suspicions as to Crystal and just who her crush was, he was not about to make the mistake of simply jumping to a conclusion. He wanted to know but she had said she would tell him if he asked on graduation. A little bit of patience and he would have an answer. It was beginning to drive him insane in the meantime as February came around. He found himself thinking of Valentine's Day.
If Crystal should have a crush on someone else, it would likely be leading to trouble in the long run. Also, Freon was around every day. She had expected him to get her something for Valentine's Day. Warren actually had no clue about any of Crystal's expectations in anything. Likely he could ask Gavin again. That reminded him what he had been told over Christmas. Even thinking about it, there was no change in how he saw the guy so he shrugged it off.
"Earth to Warren."
Glancing up, he saw Layla studying him. Actually, Stronghold was also looking at him. The rest were apparently rather occupied amongst themselves.
"What?"
"You're kind of...well, distant..." the girl began.
"Yeah, you have been since vacation. Something bugging you?" Stronghold pressed.
Sighing, Warren just looked back at the text resting open in front of him. He had barely gotten past the third question. "Just thinking."
The two should have learned by now not to push him. Unfortunately it seemed they were rather thick about things.
"Does it have to do with Freon?"
"What?"
"You're brooding."
Warren glowered at Layla. "I am not brooding."
Stronghold had to speak up again. "Well, she doesn't like to say 'sulking' to you so brooding has to work."
At any other time, his temper would have flared. Unfortunately, they were right. He just looked back down at the text. Oddly, he could not actually care enough to try to read the words he was staring at. Tapping his pencil on the notebook, he frowned. Somehow he knew the two were exchanging looks. He could care less even if he was not able to see it.
"Warren?"
"I'm just thinking, all right?" he snapped.
She drew back, looking rather hurt. "Sure, Warren...if you say so."
Frowning at her more darkly than he had actually intended, he looked back to the book and tried to focus on reading. Unfortunately, he was drawn off into thought of how it was a little bit fun to go over things with Crystal. Her answers always had some sort of twist or side-comment added on about the subject material or those who made it. Maybe he should go over to their table next time...

On Valentine's Day most of the school seemed uptight about who would be revealed as who's valentine. Warren oddly found himself a lot more depressed than before. It hardly helped when class was interrupted so that Freon could receive one of the large red heart-shaped suckers that had been sold to help the prom committee on funds for the dance. She made such a big deal about it, going on about how sweet it was. He felt like gagging.
By lunch, most of the people in the school had at least one of the valentines. Freon had about twenty all together. Sitting at his usual table, Warren made no attempt at trying to read. Instead he was watching people. The S.S.S. had their suckers as well. Ethan and Zach had two each, Magenta and Layla had four each. Stronghold had his bag stuffed full. Even though he had a girlfriend, it seemed everyone still wanted to be his valentine. It was as amusing as it was disgusting.
Warren received two during lunch. Finishing up, he shoved them into his bag before escaping the table to head over to the other table he frequented after eating. Gavin and Crystal were there. He saw five of the suckers near the guy's elbow. Oddly, there were no signs of any suckers near Crystal or in her open bag. Frowning at that, he sat down beside her and dug out the Chemistry book.
As they did the assignment, he actually attempted a little of that silent conversation with Gavin. Catching the sidekick's eye, he glanced toward the suckers then over to Crystal and back to Gavin before raising his brows in question. Gavin tilted his head before shaking it slowly. So, Crystal had not gotten any valentines so far. The thought was rather disturbing. Still, he did understand the girl enough that he was not going to offer her one of his.
The assignment was finished and Crystal lingered a few minutes before rising and heading off. Warren put his books away and simply frowned at the table. He was surprised when Gavin's notebook slid into his line of sight.
Just to make sure, no, Crystal has not gotten any Valentines at all. I would have gotten her one but...
Yes, he understood that. Sure, the S.S.S. banded together and did the whole mutual valentines thing. Crystal was not the sort that liked it. Even Warren went along with it just because it kept them off his back. The notebook slid away and he finally looked up to scan the room. Freon caught his eye and smirked as she sucked on the top of a valentine sucker. His frown became a glower which only made her smirk more.
That bitch. Still, he forced himself to forget her. He was still worried about the fact Crystal had no valentines. It was only halfway through the day though, hopefully there would be something for her before the day was over. An idea hit him however. Rising, he grabbed his bag and went back to the S.S.S. table while digging for his cell phone.

Warren anxiously looked at the clock for what was likely the twentieth time. It was only five minutes away from where it had been last time he looked. Being how it was the final period before school was out, he was seriously hoping it would arrive before the final bell. Frowning at his paper again, he tried to focus on what the teacher was lecturing about. His attention was hardly able to linger on that longer than a few seconds.
A knock came at the door about ten minutes later. Since the lecture was over, all eyes went to the spot as the teacher called out for them to come in. The same student that delivered the candy turned up. Warren mentally cursed that it was not the one he was waiting on. Still, like everyone else, he watched as the guy moved into the room and opened the bag to pull out another valentine. This sucker was red but it had a white sugar coating around the edge.
It was one of the more expensive ones then, the ones that cost about five dollars. Promptly, the guy moved through the desks and actually offered the sucker to Warren. Surprised, he took it and narrowed his eyes as he flipped open the small card. All that it said however was "Happy Valentines" in elegant handwriting. Already murmurs were rising and many were looking at Freon who was frowning almost as much as he was.
The final bell rang. Warren was one of the first out of the room. He was still hoping, but he only had a minute or two left. Relief flooded him when he opened the door because the item he had asked for was on the top shelf. Quickly changing books to grab only those for homework, he zipped the bag up and grabbed the item before heading for the doors. Hopefully not many would be outside yet so it would have to be fast.
Crystal was just leaving through the front doors. Following her, Warren went down the steps and reached out to catch her wrist. She stopped and spun instantly though the instant she saw him, her other arm dropped. He had almost forgotten she had a fighter's reactions. A stupid move but one he hoped to make up for.
"Hey Warren...something wrong?"
He realized he was just a little out of breath and found that he was blushing a little since she noticed before he had.
"No. I just wanted to...make sure you got this."
At her puzzled look, he glanced down and brought his free hand up. Her eyes widened as he presented the simple black iris. The flower was fully opened with deep red rust-colored beards on the falls. A pattern of white and deep purple dotted the bases of every petal like a starry sky. For nearly a full minute, Crystal just stared at the flower he held, surprise still visible. At last, she released the strap of her bag to reach up and almost carefully take it.
"Would you be my valentine, Crystal?" he asked quietly.
Her eyes rose. For a moment he was sure she did not like it. Maybe he should have gone with a red rose...or a white...even a yellow...something more traditional. He knew she hated pink with a passion. The grin that broke out made him relax instantly. Before he realized it, her arms were around him and he was being caught in a kiss. The world fell away as his mouth opened under hers and he drew her close.
Unfortunately, what shattered the moment was not the need for air but the wolf-whistles coming from somewhere behind him. Pulling back, he glanced over his shoulder to see most of the school staring at them. His temper began to flare. Apparently he was not the only one because before he could do anything, Crystal gave him a squeeze and growled near his ear, "Ignore them, Firestarter."
Before the senior year, he would never have believed that he would simply follow the advice of a girl as if it was a command. Now however, Warren felt his temper slip back down. Glaring at the rest, he turned away to look back to Crystal. She was flushed, likely embarrassed but there was a steely determination in her eyes as she winked at him. Drawing away, she caught his hand in her free one and led him toward the bus while keeping the iris firmly if gently gripped in the other.
The fact that Freon had been standing on the steps, eyes like ice and anger blatantly obvious on her face was not lost on him. Anyone else might have been feeling a sense of satisfaction. Warren however could care less. He had not done it to piss her off. Crystal actually stepped foot on the bus and led him to a seat. As he sat beside her, he found himself smirking a little. Sparks was an idiot for dumping Crystal.
