When she woke up he was gone. She moved her aching
body slowly, covering herself up with a sheet. Kayla walked into the foyer and
smiled. “You sleep a long time,” Ga’gan said as he ate. He motioned her to sit
next to him.
“Twice your schedule.” Kayla could have sworn she just went to sleep less
than six hours ago.
“If I stayed in bed with you I would have attacked
you. So I had a meal prepared for us. You don’t have to eat just meat and what
do you call it… grits?” She laughed hitting him playfully.
“Once you are dressed I want to take you to meet
someone,” he slid her chair closer to him so he could look at the bruises on
her neck and shoulder. He groaned in delight. “Put some salve on it. You’ll be
fine.”
“Meet who?”
Ga’gan was silent for a moment. He did not know how
she would react to his news. He tried to explain the situation to her first.
“Kayla I will still go on missions. I will continue to hunt, and train. If something
ever happens to me the mate that I choose for you will take my place.” He
sensed her heartbeat rising. “Please don’t be upset. It’s not good for the
baby.”
“Huh,” Kayla’s jaw dropped. “I’m pregnant already? How
did you know I didn’t know.”
“I don’t know either, but just in case.”
“Ga’gan,” Kayla stood up and walked away, he grabbed
her arm and turned her around. She thought of what happened between her and
Maha’vin. “I don’t want to be with someone else!”
“Speak softly,” he touched her stomach then her face.
“I don’t want you to be with anyone else Kayla, but it’s my duty to see that a
proper mate is chosen for you in the event of my death. Someone I know will
watch and protect you. I was thinking my uncle…”
“No,” she quickly cut him off. “Not Maha’vin.”
“He cares for you, even now.”
“I said no,” Kayla yelled as she walked back into the
bedroom to change. She started going through all the drawers. Ga’gan could tell
something was wrong.
“What did he do to you, besides trying to kill you?”
“Where are my training clothes,” Kayla snapped.
“He went to your planet and bought you back here,”
Ga’gan started to get angry. He knew it took Maha’vin a day longer than he
calculated. “What happened?”
“Nothing,” Kayla mumbled as she started to look in
another drawer.
Ga’gan grabbed her arm and swung her around so she
could look at him. She had never seen him so angry before. He was breathing
harder and his mandibles were flared. “What did he do!” he roared at her.
Kayla’s started to cry. “It was dark. He said his camouflage
was stuck so I couldn’t tell if it was you or not at first. He imitated your
voice. Ga’gan, I thought it was you…”
“What happened,” he barked holding her arm tighter.
“I didn’t realize it wasn’t you until it was over. He
called me his Kayla. He mated with me.”
“No,” he pushed her away softly and started to put on
his armor. Kayla followed him as he went into his weapon room.
“Ga’gan no,” she begged. “It’s over,
I’m your mate now.” She stood in front of him but he pushed her out the way.
“He must die,” he growled. “He assaulted you.” Ga’gan
stopped and looked at her. “Did you enjoy it?”
Kayla’s mouth opened in shock. “Ga’gan, I thought it
was you, you, he said everything grew… so yes because I thought it was you.
It’s been over a year.”
“So he’s larger,” Ga’gan said in shock. “As
intelligent as you are, you accepted the answer it grew?”
“I don’t know how your species growth spurts work,”
she argued back.
“I’m going to go cut it off before I kill him,” Ga’gan
barked as he walked towards the door. “If something happens to me then Pa’ram
will be your new mate. I don’t know his size but I’m sure he will show you if
you ask.”
Kayla looked at her sticks before she threw a piece of
fruit at his head. “Don’t you dare insult me!” He
turned around and looked at her angrily before snarling in her direction. Kayla
quickly picked up her sticks. “We sparred together. I know your style.”
He shook his head at her in disbelief. When he walked
closer she slowly got into a fighting stance. Ga’gan started to laugh. “You are
turning me on you know.” He snatched the sticks away from her before holding
her in his arms. The cold metal made her tremble.
“Silly ooman,” he whispered a moment later.
“Crazy Yautja,” Kayla replied.
“Please forgive me. I would never hurt you
intentionally Kayla, you have to know this. The comment about Pa’ram was
completely uncalled for.”
“You are hurting me Ga’gan. You are about to go kill
your uncle. I don’t want any blood shed over me.”
“How do I live looking at him everyday, knowing what
he did to you?” he questioned softly. “Thinking you were in heat and sensing
your child bearer’s musk without manipulation is one thing. That can be
forgiven, but to mate with you by trickery is punishable by death.”
“Please think of another way,” she begged looking at
him. The door com buzzed.
“Are you leaving?” Kul’vir asked looking at his
brother. He looked over at Kayla who was visibly upset. “What’s wrong?” Ga’gan
looked at Kayla and she walked out the room. A few moments later Kul’vir walked
in.
“Stop him,” Kayla demanded.
“No. He has every right to attack Uncle,” Kul’vir said
angrily. “Are you alright?” Kayla shook her head yes.
“No weapons Kul’vir,” she pleaded. “Please. At least
they will both walk away from it.”
“I had never seen Ga’gan this angry. I can’t say they
will both walk away from it.” Kayla sat on the bed slowly.
“What have I done?” she whispered.
“Where are you off to brother?” Ne’el said surprising
Ga’gan. He stopped and gave him a brotherly hug.
“I’m about to go kill Maha’vin,” Ga’gan said calmly.
“When did you return?”
“A moment ago,” Ne’el said. “I don’t know why you want
to kill Uncle but I’m there for you.” Ga’gan looked at him and nodded. Ne’el
was always willing to do anything for him and vice versa. They’ve depended upon
each other since they were children. Ga’gan explained what happened as they
walked.
Ne’el pressed Maha’vin’s com until he answered. Ga’gan
didn’t give him time to speak. He punched him in the nose to knock off his
balance then the stomach to make him topple over.
“I guess Kayla finally told you,” he wiped the blood
from his mouth as he looked at Ga’gan. He held up his hands for Ga’gan to
continue.
“You want me to kill you,” Ga’gan started to hand his
weapons to Ne’el.
“You can try,” Maha'vin laughed. They punched each
other so hard Kayla could hear them fighting as her and Kul’vir approached
Maha'vin’s living quarters. Kayla was about to say something but Ne’el stopped
her as the fighting grew more intense. Kayla gripped Kul’vir’s arm when Ga’gan
stumbled back from one of Maha'vin’s powerful punches to his chest. They hissed
and snarled at one another. Neon green blood was all over the room due to the
deep claw marks in each others body. Ga’gan kneed Maha'vin in the groin before
smashing his fist down on his back. Kul’vir nudged Kayla to look back up.
Ga’gan held Maha'vin in a choke hold. Ga’gan roared as
he applied enough pressure to break Maha’vin’s arm.
“Ga’gan no,” Kayla said softly. She didn’t realize she
said it loud enough for him to hear her. He suddenly looked up at her.
“Beg for her forgiveness,” he growled to Maha'vin.
“After you’re done groveling I will kill you.”
Kayla looked away. She didn’t care for the Yautja like
she once had, but she respected him enough to not watch him be degraded in such
a demeaning manner. “I’m sorry Kayla,” Maha'vin said. “I’m sorry for marking
you. I’m sorry for truly caring for you. I’m sorry that you felt the need to
run into the arms of this stupid boy. I’m especially sorry for giving you what
we both wanted that night on your planet.”
Ga’gan broke his other arm. Maha'vin roared in pain.
Kayla covered her ears. The sound of a screaming Yautja made her skin crawl
every time she heard it. Kul’vir touched her arm when the screaming was over.
Ne’el calmly looked over at Kul’vir then slowly back
to Ga’gan. “You can’t slay him,” Ne’el reminded him. He motioned his eyes towards Kul’vir. Kayla
noticed the secret body language between the two brothers. She knew they were
referring to Kul’vir. Maha'vin was his father. Kul’vir was to busy looking at
Maha'vin to notice Ga’gan and Ne’el.
Kayla couldn’t let Ga’gan kill him. “I forgive you
Maha'vin,” she blurted.
Kul’vir looked down at her. “Kayla, surly you can not
forgive him,” Ga’gan said in disbelief.
She knew from their code and honor system, if she
forgave him there would be no reason for Ga’gan to kill him. “If your mother
can forgive him then so can I,” she looked at Ga’gan. “Ne’el is correct. You
can’t kill him. Please let me take you to the medical lab.” Ne’el looked at
her. For the first time Kayla impressed him. Kayla held her hand out to Ga’gan.
He hesitated for a moment before dropping Maha’vin’s
body to the floor and walking towards Kayla. He held her hand and pulled her
towards his wounded body. She let out a sigh of relief when he nudged his
mandibles softly across her neck.
Kul’vir stared at Maha'vin a moment longer before
speaking. “If you ask me you should have snapped his fucking neck,” he growled
before walking away. Ne’el and Ga’gan didn’t say anything as Kul’vir left.
Kayla looked at Maha'vin. She noticed the sudden disappointment in his eyes
when Kul’vir spoke.
“I think your son just punished you more than death
could,” Kayla said softly before walking out with Ga’gan and Ne’el.
Pahel looked over Ga’gan as Ne’el and Kayla watched.
“If you continue to crack your ribs without proper time to heal they will never
grow back correctly,” Pahel sighed as he put his instruments down.
“Never mind my ribs, check Kayla for pregnancy,”
Ga’gan looked at her.
“You just mated a day ago,” Pahel walked over to her.
“I’m sure it takes longer than a day.”
“Just check her,” Ne’el growled.
Pahel ran his instruments across her stomach and shook
his head no. “Let me further test you. This reading can’t be correct. Do ooman’s produce quicker than Yautja females?”
“What are you saying?” Ga’gan sat up and winced in
pain. Kayla walked over to him and looked back at the doctor.
“It reads, she’s expecting but I will run further
tests after I finish stitching your legs. Maha'vin cut you pretty bad with his
talons.”
“I will stitch him,” Ne’el snapped, “You just find out
if Kayla is expecting.” Pahel growled at Ne’el and Ne’el growled louder making
the doctor leave the room.
“Do you need anything to numb the pain?” Kayla asked
softly when Ga’gan looked down at the slash marks on both his legs. Ne’el
washed his hands and looked over the medical supplies.
“Of course not,” he grunted as Ne’el started stitching
his legs.
Ne’el trilled at Ga’gan, “She’s already impressed with
you brother. No need to endure such pain.” Ga’gan winced again as he watched
Ne’el work two needles at once. He started to break out into a sweat. Kayla
rubbed his head softly.
“I said no,” he growled before passing out.
“He will be fine,” Ne’el laughed sensing Kayla’s
panic. “He’s such a show off.”
“Do you know what you’re doing?”
“I’ve trained as a doctor for a century,” He started
to stitch the other leg. “Does that answer your question?” Kayla didn’t
respond. “How did you know about Maha'vin and Kul’vir?”
“I watched your body movements with your brother,” she
noted. “I guessed the rest. Maybe I should go find Kul’vir.”
“He will be fine,” Ne’el assured her. “I’m sure he is
upset over what happened to you.” Ne’el started to wash his hands. Pahel came
back into the room and instructed Kayla to sit next to Ga’gan. He ran a
different instrument over her stomach as Ne’el walked over and watched.
“Calm down Kayla,” Ne’el said softly sensing her
anxiety.
“She's holding her breath,” Pahel mumbled. He looked
up at her. “Stop holding your breath.” Ne’el thought of what Kul’vir would do
at the moment and reached for her hand. He rubbed on her small fingers softly.
“Well,” Pahel looked at Ne’el. “Ooman’s get pregnant
easy or your brother is really good. Both instruments wouldn’t lie.” Pahel was
excited as he hugged her and patted Ne’el on the shoulder. He and Kayla looked
at each other as if someone just died. She looked over at Ga’gan whom, was
still passed out.
“What is wrong with you two,” Pahel snapped. “It’s a baby
on the way and that’s a reason to be happy.
“Yes it is great news Pahel,” Ne’el said looking at
him. “I will inform my parents immediately.” Ga’gan had to stay in the medical
lab for a few days. Ne’el silently walked Kayla back to her quarters. He left
her at the door. Kul’vir was waiting for her inside.
“How did you get in here?”
“You can only lock these doors from the inside,” he
told her as he leaned back on the bed of pillows. “The defense is at a low
level here since the guards are at the entrance of every hall.”
“Oh.” Kayla sat across from him and sighed. She loved
this part of the quarters. The sunken area consisted of nothing but pillows. It
was where she was able to get to know Nam’rah and the other females better.
“Are you ok?”
“My Uncle just disappoints me a great deal,” he said
softly. He stood up and sat closer to her. Kayla took his hand and rubbed it
softly. His eyes closed. She could tell his dreads have grown. He added several
more rings to them.
“Stop staring at me,” he growled. Kayla smiled and
pushed him softly. “How is Ga’gan?”
“He is fine, Ne’el stitched him up.”
“Good, I can’t wait to mate with you both again,” he
chuckled looking at her. Kayla covered her face with a pillow before throwing
it at him.
“Have I ever met Pa’ram?”
Kul’vir thought for a moment. “You may have seen him
in passing but you never practiced with him. Why do you ask?”
“Earlier Ga’gan was saying something about taking on
another mate in case something happens to him and he mentioned his name.”
“He is a good Yautja and ok fighter but much better
doctor. He and Ne’el are close.”
“Well that settles it, if he is anything like Ne’el I
don’t think he will care for an ooman much.”
“Ne’el likes you,” Kul’vir shook his head softly. “He
just don’t understand the fondness his brother and uncle has for you. He sees
you more of, how do I say it…” Kul’vir
was silent for a moment. “A pet.”
Kayla grunted and crossed her arms. “Maybe if I spar
with him a few times he will see me differently. A pet.
I’m offended!”
Kul’vir laughed. “Sparring with him would have helped
but you can’t fight anymore. It’s not the role of a breeder. He’s heard of your
fighting skills.”
“So who did you
pick for Stef’na?”
“Ga’gan,” he said as if she should already know the
answer.
“He has a mate,” Kayla huffed.
Kul’vir laughed at her. “He can have two. We can take
up to five mates if we have the energy, but I never heard of anyone doing such.
The most I’ve seen was three.”
“So do you plan on taking on another mate?”
“No, Stef’na is more than enough,” Kul’vir stood up
and looked at her. “Besides, the second mate I had in mind decided to mate with
my brother.”
“Ne’el decided to mate again?”
Kul’vir sighed and tapped on her head softly before
leaving. Kayla knew he was talking about her but she didn’t want to have a
serious conversation about mating with him.
