Hector Simmons. Age 22. Loving son. College elite. Dashing boyfriend. Credited himself, firstly, as devoted brother.
When his sister was still, visually, a boy; he knew right away that he was different. It was no great scream. It was a simple action, that took place during a common moment. He placed his hair behind his ear before leaning to bite into a taco. Guys usually would toss their head as if having a slap-fight with the invisible man, or they'd viciously yank it out of their face. But, his brother had simply moved the hair behind his ear.
He doesn't know when their parents suspected anything; but, when the holidays rolled around and a doll was asked for, they bought it. No questions asked. It was then that they began to change their thinking. Was the youngest gay? It didn't seem so. So, that could only mean transgender. That was completely out of their knowledge. But they gradually understood the difference between what too many see as 'a gay cover' to someone who was simply born in the wrong body.
Hector respected Geri as he would any female. No more leaping on his little brother, wrestling him to the ground, no more strolling into the bathroom to piss or drop-a-load while a shower was in progress. Doors must be knocked on before entering. The body may have been a boy, but the respectful privacy was offered to the young girl.
So, that brings the older Simmons child to where he currently is. The Simpson home. His large fist knocked on the door, and he waited patiently for an answer. It took a minute, and a ring of the bell before feet finally sounded from the other side of the door.
"What do you want?" Asked a teen.
"Are you..." he played momentarily dumb. "Mitchell Simpson?"
"Yeah, you bring my homework or something?" It was possible. A lot of sophomores look like seniors these days. The football team are beasts.
"Something." Replied Hector before his fist slammed into Mitchell's crotch at full force. Grabbing the doubled-over teen's hair, he raised his head. "If you ever bother my little sister again, I'll be back to turn you into a girl. Got it."
Mitchell, in weeping pain, nodded. His face was beet red. He couldn't even close the door, his hands were occupied with trying to sooth the pain.
Hector sneered at him one last time before walking back down to the street to his car. Mission cleared. Now to stop off where he was supposed to have gone. Popeyes. His sister needed cheering up; and his mother told him to get a feast. Geri loves the spicy heart attack. Although, today she wanted shrimp. And once he returned home, they all sat at the table enjoying their meal. And let go of the awful behavior of some people.
After dinner, Geri went upstairs and changed into something less school attire. She was back down in the living room ten minutes later, hair brushed into a high ponytail; teeth free of all dinner stuffs and breath minty fresh. Now, if Colt has finagled a way to have a date with her, she'll be out the door. In the meantime, she sat and watched TV with her mother while waiting for the call.
At the Douglas home.
"Mom.. would it be ok if I go out with Geri tonight? We won't actually go anywhere!" He was quick to add that. "I just wanna watch a movie out-front." He gave her his big-eyed hazel please. Mouthing the word over and over.
"Ok."
"Yes!"
"But you're sincerely grounded tomorrow. Alright?"
"Yes. Promise." He got up from his seat, and moved round the table to kiss her on the cheek. "Thanks, mom."
"Mhmm. No dessert?"
"No. Popcorn." Looking at his brother, he then threw him his doe-eyes. He knew eating in Rocky's car was a "No", but they gotta. Movies need snacks. And Rocky has late for school toasts and pop-tarts in his car all the time.
"Fine. But no horror." He insisted. "I don't need you two pretending to be scared, making a mess."
"Deal. Thanks." He sped out of the kitchen to get his phone. No phones at the table. A hardened rule. Plus, being grounded, he wasn't supposed to use it.
Sam slanted a glance at his wife. "Grounded? Should I be in detail about it?"
Jessica shook her head. "Colt was fighting at school."
"Seriously? When is he going to grow up? He'll be a Junior soon, then a Senior. Then he'll grow into a thug."
Jessica let her husband get his grief out of his system before speaking again. "Sam, a boy at school kicked Geri in the groin to prove a point about her being male; Jeffrey was rightfully upset. It's a shame he used violence, but I can't say I wouldn't do the same if some little brat did that to my son's while I was in the vicinity."
Sam had to agree. He wouldn't exactly be an innocent bystander, nor have scorning words for someone who messed with his family right to his face. But still, with Jeffrey it was too frequent to just be an outburst. It could become a natural, bad habit that's hard to break away from. His wife's words caught up to him. Sam's mouth dipped to a deep frown. What was the matter with people? Why would anyone do such a thing? Not even he...
''God help me; I did worse.' He rubbed his forehead.
Tum Tum saw the flash of grief on his dad's face. "What's the matter, dad?" He stuffed a bite of pork cutlet in his mouth.
"I think.. I think I owe Jeffrey and his friend, an apology."
Rocky, finished with dinner, got up from his seat; he grabbed his plate. "A good way to start is to call her by her name; and acknowledge they're dating." He suggested. He shrugged his shoulders.
Sam nodded. It made sense. But it was not going to be easy. He's only just realizing his error. Admitting it out loud goes down rough. He always thought of himself as a man who doesn't get it wrong. At least not to a degree that required apologies. What are they going to say? Do they want an apology? Will they accept it, or tell him too late? Then what? Does he live with the nag over his head that he can screw up and not be forgiven? What point is there to apologizing, if that's the outcome?
He heard the stairs. Just when he was about to call for his son so he could take him aside and talk to him; Colt breezed into view holding out two of the accent pillows from the couch. He asked if he could use them in the car. Jessica instructed him not to get it dirty. He swore that he would not. Sam wanted to say something, but his words got stuck. Another time.
Colt was just straightening from his lean into the back seat when his girlfriend arrived by bike. He smiled and greeted her with a kiss on the cheek.
"You waiting for the weekend to tell them about detention?"
"Nope. I had Rocky pave a path for me." He gestured that she could get in first. "Everybody listens to Rocky; anyone that grounded in sense has to be taken seriously." He climbed in and closed the door.
It would have been stuffy in the L.A. warmth but the windows are down; and there's a cool breeze passing now and then.
"What are we seeing?" Geri asked; her gaze on the 10.5 inch tablet screen placed between the front seats.
"Uhh," he swiped through the saved list. "What are you in the mood for?"
"I could watch a horror movie."
Colt mentally spun his mental encyclopedia for any horror films he might have happened upon that weren't too terrible. Then Freddy Kruger popped into mind. The worst collab ever, Freddy vs Jason. Definitely want to steer clear of that.
"Ooh! Scream!" Geri pointed. "My mom said this really freaked her out. Have you seen it?"
"Not the original." It suddenly dawned on Colt that he'd forgotten the snacks. "I forgot the snacks. I'll be a minute."
"Ok." She watched Colt go inside; quickly she checked herself for overpowering perfume scent. That could kill a good time just as easily as a bad smell - - especially when eating. It's like tasting the perfume.
Jessica looked away from the TV when her son walked in. "Did you get your money back?" She teased. She figured he'd be outside for an hour and a bit. Not roughly six minutes.
"What?" He missed the joke about walking out on a bad movie.
"Did you forget something?"
"Yeah, the snacks." He's stuffing a bag of Orval into the microwave. "Popcorn is better fresh." He also grabbed a couple Snapples and a snack cake for them to split. He dashed upstairs to his bedroom. "Tum, can I have one of your candy bars?"
"Which candy bar?" He cocked a brow, giving his brother a critical stare.
"Any one."
"You can have two snack sized, no king."
"Oh, come on!"
"Take it or leave it."
Rocky snickered. "Don't you get it, Tum; Colt wants the romance of indirect kisses from sharing food."
"Oooh!" He chuckled.
Rocky and Tum Tum made kissing sounds. Colt rolled his eyes.
"Forget it." He felt a blush forming at his ears. "You two are so annoying." He muttered.
"No, wait. I don't wanna ruin your mood," he got up from the beanbag and retrieved a king size candy bar. "Don't forget to do that thing where you pretend you don't notice there's caramel on your mouth." He laughed a dodged a swing.
Getting a whiff of the popcorn in the air; the youngest Douglas voiced his desire to have a bag for himself. Colt left the bedroom; he then retrieved the bag from the microwave. He said good night to his mother, who was still seated on the couch watching Grey's Anatomy reruns on Lifetime.
"Night, sweetie."
Geri thought about locking him out of the car to mess with him, but the windows are down and not the kind that roll up manually.
"Password?" She demanded.
"Milky Way."
"Ooh, what a shame; we were looking for Lindt." She hissed through her teeth like a snooty game show host. "Sorry. Looks like your view will be through the window."
"Darn." He handed her the goods before climbing into the car. "Snacks, movie, and babe. Let's start the date."
The pair watched with near muted interest. This was much better than that crap that came out last month. No wonder it became so popular. The movie, they agreed in whisper, was disturbingly possible. Colt took the candy bar after Geri had her bite; he bit a hunk off, saving both the sweet and the indirect kiss. So what if Rocky was right; he didn't have to say it and poke fun. Like he's never done it. Colt was sure there was a side of Rocky that was just as corny and obvious as the rest of the world.
Look at how much he likes to show-off!
"I swear, if my phone rings I'm tossing it out the window." Declared his date.
She made a shocked sound when her fingers danced with Colt's as they both reached into the popcorn bag. She chuckled; interlocking their salty, buttery fingers, together she peppered kisses onto the part of his hand exposed to her.
"You've got a little something on your mouth." Colt reached for her face, but his hand breezed by and landed instead on the back of her head. He leaned her to him, and kissed her imaginary mess.
The movie was momentarily ignored in trade of paying attention to each other. It was then that their rustle of passion was joined by Sydney and Billy, who were engaged in a love scene at the moment. They kissed, and kissed everywhere. The lips glided smoothly, inside the mouth explored like a deep sea dive, their neck was lavished with attention.
Colt stole a glance at the house. No one was peering through a window downstairs, as far as he could tell. And his brothers can't see them in the back. So he dared. He ran his hand up the back of her shirt then unhooked her bra. Geri swung her legs up to rest on Colt's lap; her breathing picked up when his hands palmed and caressed her breast.
They couldn't. They shouldn't. Not in the Douglas's driveway at 7 p.m. But there they were, escalating a kiss. With hands exploring in a grope, grab, squeeze, or caress. Geri's fingertips brushing into the boarder of Colt's jeans sent her onto her back from her boyfriend tilting into her with weight that instructed she lay down.
Geri's light moan danced through Colt's senses when he placed a protruded nipple between his lips. He was entranced by the sound. However, her fingers moving from his rear to his zipper brought the situation into view. He pulled back; breathless and shaking his head.
"What? What happened?" She asked when realizing his pull-back wasn't to remove garments. She sat up; her hands instinctively went to work righting her hair and clothes.
"Nothing. I just realized where we are." He looked around them.
Geri looked as well, blushing. Backseat Bimbo? No, thank you. "You really do have ninja senses. Someone in a neighbor's house could have seen us, or your family."
"If we're gonna do that, we gotta be classy about it."
"Right. Condoms, bed, the whole production."
Colt nodded. Glad she understood.
They both yelped at a sudden bang! Looking at the screen, they twinned like curious pugs; their head cocked as they watched the scene. And in unison they voice their surprise.
"It was Billy and Stu?!"
What a twist! They may have missed the entire tail end of the movie, but it was fantastic!
The couple finished their snacks; cleaned up any mess made; then departed the mock drive-in area. They stood in their feelings outside of the front door of the Douglas home.
Colt could really understand Rocky's relationship tongue-tied moments. He doesn't know what to say. His adrenaline and body are still reliving the moment in the car. And judging by the way Geri is studying her sneakers, she's still in the zone, as well.
"Umm.. I hope I don't sound like some perv, but, could we try again at a hotel?" He quickly explained. "My house is crawling with interlopers, you're housing a miniature Hulk," he smiled from her chuckle over the description of her brother. "And.. I want us to enjoy it. I'll be prepared. You just have to come with me."
"Okay. But, are you sure?"
"Oh yeah, big time."
Geri shoved the horny pervert, then leaned into him, giving him a peck. "When?"
"When I'm no longer grounded. Next weekend?"
"It's a date."
"It is a date; because we're going to dinner first."
"Alright. Until then; stay strong through lockup."
"I always have." He reached out taking her wrist. "Wait, wait."
"Hmm?"
He pulled her phone from the kangaroo pocket on her shirt. "Send this to me." He took a picture of her. "Prisoners need photos of their honey to look at on lonely nights."
Smiling at how adorably goofy he could be; she sent the photo to his phone. "See you at school."
"Later."
He waited until she was out of view before going in.
"Jeffrey," Sam was exiting his office at the moment Colt closed the front door.
'Crap. Did he see us?' Wondered Colt. He schooled down his agitation. The warden was probably made aware of the fight and wanted to have the usual "Fly right" monologue with him. Ugh.
"Can you come in my office?"
"I'm already grounded; do I need a lecture, too?" He walked into the office.
When the door closed; Sam walked over to the desk, leaning on it at a slight sit. "Jeffrey, your mother told me about the fight. And, I want to apologize."
Colt looked rightfully confused. "Why? I mean, unless you put Mitchell up to it, it's not your fault to say sorry." He was about to leave, but his father verbally stopped his exit.
"I didn't put anyone up to anything. I was disgusted by what I found out - - I can see why you fought." He held up his hand to stop his son's joy that, finally, his stuffy father understood him. "I still don't want you fighting, but I do know why you had." He added. "It had me thinking that people are needlessly cruel, and then I thought about my own... Maybe, to some degree, I am xenophobic. I just.. I'm not used to a lot of things, and it freaked me out that I have to address it through one of my kids."
Colt could not believe what he was hearing. Not only was his father apologizing, but he was giving an explanation that made sense. That showed his sincerity. That led Colt to believe him, that he will or even simply could change.
"And I intend to apologize to your girlfriend as well."
Colt didn't miss the struggle to use the relationship term rather than the female aspect. "Thank you. And, I accept your apology." He met his father's open arms.
"Does this mean.."
"You're still grounded for fighting."
"Right. Night, dad."
"Night, son,"
Colt left the office; said good night to his mother; and after dumping his snack trash into the canister, he went up to his bedroom.
"Rocky, are you busy next weekend with work or something?"
"No."
"Could you do me a huge favor?"
"If you want me to chauffeur you around, forget it."
"No. I wanna go out with Geri, and I was thinking it would be nice if it was a double-date."
"I'm not going out with anyone." Rocky was fairly sure his brother knows that fact already.
"Find someone," he threw it out there. "You're Rocky Douglas, cool guy, great time, umm.."
Rocky squinted bitterly at his brother. Was he serious?
"My treat."
#
"Alfie, wanna go out with me this weekend?" Rocky asked while they were at their lockers between classes.
"How the tongues will wag, interracial couple, and gay..."
Rocky shrugged.
"I would but, my boyfriend would kill you then dump me."
"Sorry, I didn't know."
"It's ok. Is it urgent, or have always liked me?"
"Naah. My dimwit brother wants to double,"
"Oh." Alfie chuckled. "Colt really is a master manipulator if he's got you hunting for a date just to accommodate him."
"Yeah. The creep once convinced me to eat his extra ice cream, despite the fact that I was full. I threw up an hour later. Kids can't hold as much sugar as adults think."
Nevermind the fact that Colt also talked him out of calling the police the night Synder's men came to kidnap them. Then there was the time that when they were at the cabin, and Colt told him to drive them out for a pizza. He was only 15, no learner permit. They could have been in serious trouble. Maybe he's not a master, but, he, Rocky, was a pushover?
"See ya," he said to option one. On to option two. "Brina, wanna go out with me on Saturday?"
Brina looked spooked. There was no way this was really happening? She's only had a crush on Samuel Douglas since forever! She nodded mechanically. Her heart ached when he smiled at her.
"Great!" He gave her his number. "I'll come pick you up at six. Just send your address before then."
Again, she nodded mechanically, rusted, ready to fall apart. And, again, she died when he gave her a pat on the head before going to class. Aaahh! A date! On Saturday! ...She needs a new outfit! That's tomorrow!
