Unexpected Celebrations
“Henry.” Katherine said standing at the door of his study. He was currently in a meeting, but she didn’t feel like it could wait another moment. Henry could see that she seriously needed something and stood from his desk, excusing himself for a few minutes. He stepped out into the hall with Katherine closing the door behind. Before he could ask what she needed, she stepped closer to him. “I don’t think this is a good idea.” She said. “Would you care to start from the beginning.” He said not completely sure but he had a fair notion of what she was talking about. “The boys have only just come home. They’ve been through a lot, we’ve been through hell . . . . can’t this wait? Please?” She asked. “They’ve been home for nearly a month, and the equinox is the perfect time to have a celebration for their return.” She still looked upset, and hardly convinced. “Are you having a problem with the preparations?” He asked. “No, I’ve seen to everything and then some but . . .” She began. “The invitations?” He asked. “No, they are ready to be sent out, but I . . .” Yet he again he cut her off before she continued. “And your dress? Fitted properly and ready by the day?” He questioned. “Of course.” She said. “But this can’t be the best time to host a dinner. It lets a large volume of people through our doors. What if someone comes in, and tries to take them from us again?” “I promise to you, that the children will be heavily guarded and only people on our guest list will be allowed through the doors. There is no need to worry.” Blackwood needed to get back to his meeting, but it was obvious that Katherine was still distraught over this. “We’ll talk more this evening. Go check over the guest list and be sure there is an invitation to each name. They should be sent out tomorrow morning.” He rested his hands on her shoulders a moment and kissed her forehead before turning and going back into his study closing the door. Katherine still didn’t want to do this, but she had no choice. With a sigh she turned and went to do as instructed. Suspicious When dinner was called, Katherine was still working on the invitations, and came across two names that she couldn’t believe she saw on the list. Not certain if she should address these or if it was a mistake, she took the list with her as she went into the dining room. Blackwood had just arrived as well, and she walked over to him. “Henry?” She questioned holding the paper out. “Was this a mistake?” She questioned. Blackwood took the paper and looked it over seeing the two names she hadn’t put marks next to. “Not at all my dear.” He said handing it back to her. Katherine took it starring at him in wide eyed disbelief. “But you despise them. You told me you didn’t want them anywhere near us, or our home. Now you want to extend them an invitation to one of our orders holiday celebrations?” “They did assist in locating and retrieving our children, did they not?” He answered, “Should they not be included in the celebration of their return as well?” Katherine felt strange and very uneasy about this, her eyes turned back to the paper. “Aside from these two are the others finished?” “Yes,” She said softly. “They’re in a box on the table in our rooms.” “After dinner, add these two to the others and they’ll be sent out first thing in the morning.” He said. “They won’t understand. They’ll think it’s a trap of some kind.” She said softly not wanting to sound as though she was arguing. “Perhaps they will.” He looked up at her as if he had just gotten a stunning idea, “I know. Why don’t you hand deliver them. That way they’ll know that the invitation is sincere gratitude for their assistance.” That was even stranger, as he had always been cross with her for going anywhere near Bakers Street, but allowed it somewhat as long as he knew where she had gone and it wasn’t a social call. Yet if Blackwood was truly offering an olive branch, she would be foolish to refuse and so would they. “Alright.” She said softly. “Tomorrow afternoon then, when the boys have awaken from their nap.” “I think it best if they stay here now. In the house.” Blackwood said in a stern tone. She had been taking their youngest with her every single time she left the house with no exceptions since he was born. The hurt look on Katherine’s face, caused Blackwood to half smile slightly as he placed his hand on her lower back walking to the table. “It’s cold this time of year, we certainly don’t want them catching a cold or some such thing now that they are home. Staying here in the nursery while your away with the fireplace in their room is a much better option.” “Who will watch them?” She questioned. “Don’t worry, Katherine. I’ll take care of everything to insure their safety.” He promised walking her to her chair. “Now, you’ve been working hard all day. Let’s have a nice quiet meal and leave such small details alone for this evening.” It felt as though there was still quite a bit to talk about and nothing had been resolved. But she also knew when he was indicating a lack of interest in discussing anything. It was better not to push it and find his temper crashing down on her head. She gave a nod and took her seat as he did the same. Strange Invitations Holmes and Watson looked at each other after having read the contents of the envelopes they had been given. Katherine could see the glance passed between them and stepped forward, “I promise there are no tricks.” She said quickly. “If it wasn’t for the two of you, we may never have found them again. We would like you to please allow us to show you our gratitude.” “You must understand our skepticism.” Watson said. “Yes, I believe the treat of death if we ever set foot on the grounds might be what’s putting us off a bit.” Sherlock added. “I know that you and Henry have had your differences in the past, but this might be a chance to get past that and learn to at least co-exist here in England.” She offered. “Lady Blackwood,” Sherlock started, “Inviting us to a dinner party isn’t going to make us suddenly forget the countless murders and law breaking your husband has committed. Perhaps you can look the other way, but we cannot.” Katherine was a bit frustrated with his argument, as she had no answer to it. “Have you any proof that it was him?” She questioned. Watson and Holmes just starred at her in disbelief. Of course they didn’t. The only evidence they had was the one time they caught him in mid-ceremony in the catacombs and a young woman nearly lost her life. “Then perhaps you can put aside your suspicions and accusations for one evening, and . . . please come celebrate with us the return of my sons.” It was quite clear how sincerely she wanted them to attend. Once again they were the closest thing she had to friends, and the day her sons were brought back her face beamed with happiness, and tears of joy flowed from her eyes like rivers. Was it so hard to believe that she really wanted them there? Watson looked at Holmes as the final decision did rest with him, and even though their reasons for not wanting to attend where quite justified, it seemed only fair that they honor her personal request. “Very well.” Holmes said. “For your sake.” Katherine smiled, “Thank you.” “Dare I ask the dress code?” Holmes said. “Anything you’d like, we’d be more than happy to receive you in.” She said still smiling brightly, thankful they had accepted. “I think what my colleague means, is if it is a formal affair.” Watson said shooting Holmes a look. “Yes, it is.” She admitted. “But we don’t expect you to match anything we ourselves wear.” Holmes gave a slightly insincere smile. “I must be getting back. I’m sure you understand.” “Of course.” Watson said as he walked her out. Dressing for the Occasion “Honestly?” Watson said looking at Holmes attire. “What? Don’t you think it’s somewhat dashing and mysterious?” He questioned. “It’s the suit you wore to your father’s funeral.” Watson said. “Well, it was time to give it some air. It’s been a while after all, and I did spend a rather pretty penny on it.” Holmes said smoothing his hand over the dark black material. “This isn’t a funeral, and Katherine said that we weren’t expected to dress like that.” Watson said a bit irritated at his friend. “You’ll look more out of place in that then you would in a simple jacket and waistcoat.” Holmes turned and pointed to his garment, “Jacket, waistcoat.” He indicated that he was wearing each one. “Holmes.” Watson said preparing to chastise him further. “I brushed my hair, washed my face, shaved and put on a rather expensive suit of clothes all to attend the dinner party of a murderer and his unknowing all though willing accomplice. What more could you or anyone else ask for?” He said in his defense. “Besides the fact that it’s rude, we will be outnumbered at least ten times. Could you attempt to keep a civil and respectable demeanor tonight? For Katherine’s sake?” He said reminding him of the whole reason they accepted the invitation in the first place. “And, if you had told her like we discussed, it’s very likely there would be no dinner party at all and we would not only have Blackwood over a barrel in the courtroom but a willing witness to testify to his monstrosity.” Holmes said putting his hands in his pockets to see if he could find anything interesting left the last time he wore it. “It’s not exactly something you just blurt out at the first available silence. How am I supposed to tell her our suspicions and the horrendous reality it would mean if they were true, just casually in conversation?” Watson inquired. “She doesn’t seem the least bit concerned about why her last pregnancy was different. Perfectly happy as a clam to be ignorant of the whole affair.” Holmes said. “I think that’s going a bit far. Her son was handed into her arms, healthy and alive. Why would she question there being a second child? Or even why she was so sick in the final months before she delivered when there was nothing wrong with the baby?” Watson seemed to be rationalizing a bit now himself. Almost as bad as Katherine had done. “Watson, she is aiding and abetting him by staying silent and willfully ignorant. She knows who he is and what he is, and chooses to turn away and rationalize it. Just as you seem to do for her every time she comes up in conversation. Which is why I’ve simply avoided the subject all together.” He said sternly. Watson was silent for a moment before he spoke. “And what if she had twins and one was a daughter. What then? The only reason her life hasn’t turned into an unimaginable nightmare, is because she doesn’t know. We can’t touch Lord Blackwood without overwhelming proof when he has support from every corner of the empire.” “And what if it is true? What if what we’ve suspected and actually had an eyewitness tell us in confidence was true? Then she is living with and sharing the bed of a man who has committed genocide of her daughter. How is that any more fair then her knowing the truth?” Holmes asked. “Maybe we shouldn’t go tonight.” Watson said. “Some excuse can be given, that one or the other were taken ill.” The doctor considered that perhaps it was better not to tempt the matter if Holmes feeling was so strong about it. The man had a tendency to be very passionate, although somewhat arrogant about his beliefs and convictions. The few there were. So much so that the social graces and manners were forgotten and his conduct was somewhat uncivilized. “I might have agreed with you before going to all this trouble of getting groomed and dressed. But it’s too late now.” He said picking up his hat and heading out the door. Watson had a terrible feeling about this but quickly followed after the inspector. Strange Celebrations Blackwood and Katherine made their entrance once everyone had arrived and greeted their guests with a short speech from Blackwood about the reason for the evening’s festivities, and of course the welcome home of their boys. Katherine was dressed beautifully, in a black silk and satin gown and her hair done with crimson roses and baby’s breath. She didn’t say anything but wore a soft smile as she stood with Blackwood or just behind him. As per usual in public situations, Blackwood and Katherine’s attired complimented each other with the same colors and fabrics as the others. Then the greet and welcome was over, the crowd mingled and visited with one another. It was by mere chance and luck that Katherine was able to separate from Blackwood and slip through the crowd. She made her way to the two figures who seemed to stand apart from the rest. She smiled and held out her hands giving them a personal welcome as she was incredibly happy to see them. “I was worried you wouldn’t come.” She said, “That you might change your minds at the last moment.” Holmes looked at Watson, “How silly.” He said. “Of course we wouldn’t miss such a gathering for the world.” Sherlock took her hand and bowed slightly kissing her knuckles as he looked up at her. “Thank you for the invitation.” Watson looked between him and Katherine, not certain why either one of them seemed to be acting so out of character. Katherine seemed genuinely excited to see them, and Holmes was actually being . . .charming. “Dinner should be ready soon.” She said with a smile, before turning and rushing back through the crowd to find Blackwood’s side again before she was missed. Watson leaned closer to Holmes, “That was absolutely charming.” He said suspiciously. “Are you drunk?” “Not at all. As you have pointed out numerous times since we first left the house this evening, we are here for her sake.” Holmes eyes wondered about the room, and the fast vault ceilings that made it seem almost cavernous. The decor was very dark, very gloomy, and seemed to simply scream power in every direction. The intimidation it was meant to create was evident in every guest there even in such a large crowd. It did make you feel somewhat insignificant, and the only ones whose presence seemed to fill the space adequately was Katherine and Blackwood. Most likely an intentional affect to strong hold his reputation of wielding fear like a sword. “Do you have a feeling we are somewhat well known here?” Watson asked Holmes. The two men looked about them seeing most of the other men’s gaze somewhat attached to them. Most of them had wives that were not practitioners of the order. All the ladies seemed to care about was the chance to dress extravagantly and show themselves off to anyone who would look. Holmes and Watson took it as a good thing, as it was an unexpected safety feature of the evening. For the wives of these men to find out what sorts of things their husbands engaged in, would no doubt cause an uproar of epic proportions. “Let’s be honest. Between the two of us, we’ve hindered more of their plans, ceremonies, rituals, and other activities then anyone or anything else combined.” Holmes said to his friend. “Which just begs the question again, of why we were invited if we are so hated.” Watson said. Awkward Dinner Conversations When dinner was announced, everyone was brought into the dining room where a long table was set and awaiting the guests. Where there would usually be a white table cloth, and perhaps white china dishes, the table was shrouded in black table ware and a long onyx black table cloth. Accented with crimsons color flowers and centerpieces. Holmes and Watson were amazed as they seemed to be the only ones noticing the dreary almost gloomy setting. No one else seemed to notice or be bothered by it. Once they were all seated, Katherine smiled to Watson and Holmes who were seated close to her and Lord Blackwood’s end of the table. Drinks were poured, and the first course was served as polite conversation between the guests could be heard amongst the sound of tableware. It wasn’t until the third course that the conversation seemed to turn a bit political. “I find it odd, Lord Blackwood, that you have yet to be reinstated to the house of Lords.” One man said, as Blackwood half smiled. “It takes time for men to see the error of their ways.” Blackwood answered simply. “I can assure you, I will rise to my proper station again.” “You may be too optimistic in that assumption.” Holmes said deciding to finally join into the conversation. Their end of the table, everyone who heard him speak fell silent. Including Katherine who just remained quiet to see what would happen. “After all, a mistake would indicate that something was amiss with the decision to dismiss you in the first place.” “Not being of noble birth yourself, you’re not expected to understand the gravity of certain situations and protocols Mr. Holmes.” Blackwood said. “What they have failed to realize, as I am sure you have as well, is that turning away an asset such as I am was their misfortune. I doubt it will be long before they decide they must correct it.” “Or, laws will be passed to prevent you from ever being so close to political and legal power again.” Holmes answered. Katherine’s hands began to twist her napkin under the table nervously. Wishing that Holmes would have simply let it lie, and not said anything else. “Hmm. Except that the final decision about my appointment will rest with the people. No laws can be passed without their consent and approval. As I am sure you well realize.” Blackwood decided to take the conversation in a different direction. “And you, Mr. Holmes. You seem perfectly content that our country is not as strong as it once was, and continues to lose power and ground by the day. Have you no patriotic convictions of your own to want what is best for your country.” “On the contrary. I consider my country to be quite the center of the civilized world, as I’m sure most true Englishmen would.” Holmes stated. “Which is why I serve her best by weeding out those who tarnish her reputation and mock her laws.” Katherine cleared her throat a little bit glancing towards Watson hoping he might stop his friend from talking. “I think perhaps we may be ready for desert.” She said picking up the small hand bell and ringing it quickly to signal the servants to clear and bring on the next course. Holmes and Blackwood were starring at each other now, neither blinking nor backing down from the silent challenge that seemed to have been made. “Your favorite, My Lord.” She said when they were served. Blackwood wasn’t a fool; he could see that she was trying to throw herself between him and Holmes. “Perhaps this is a conversation for another time. Not at dinner.” He said as one of the servants filled his wine glass. “Of course, my apologizes.” Of course Holmes was hardly sincere in his apology and Blackwood’s stare continued to meet Holmes’ dead on. Katherine was now so nervous that her hand started to shake and she had to put down her spoon before she dropped it or broke the glass. “Are you alright.” Blackwood said, never once looking towards her but seeing her shake out of the corner of his eye. “I’d like to go and check on the boys. May I?” She said softly. “Be brief. We have guests.” He said. “Excuse me for a few moments.” She said quickly putting down her napkin and leaving the table to go upstairs. “Forgive my wife. However thankful we are to have our children home at last, she is still very worried about their safety.” He said to the guests who noticed that she had left rather suddenly. “As most mothers would be.” One of the men said. “Yes, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing your young men Lord Blackwood. They are all very handsome, and the most piercing eyes.” One of the ladies said. Before the dinner party had started a few of the ladies wanted to see the boys, and Katherine obliged taking them to the nursery to see. Gabriel and Michael were a bit older then Caleb who was still their newest addition. Caleb’s size, however, in contrast to his older brothers when they were born was somewhat smaller. And more than one had noticed this but said nothing. The dinner continued, although somewhat uncomfortable for those sitting at the end of the table where Blackwood and Holmes were seated. The glare between the two men continued after Katherine had left, and most likely was not going to subside. Uninvited After dinner, the crowd milled around somewhat and the Ladies and Gentleman seemed to separate into different rooms. Katherine slipped from her duties as hostess for a few moments to locate Holmes and Watson. When she did, she motioned for them to slow down and remain in the hallway as they stepped back from the others. It was obvious that Katherine’s eye was on Blackwood and she was less concerned with the rabble. Making her way over to them, she kept her voice quiet. “Don’t go with them.” She said softly. “Why?” Holmes asked. “Mr. Holmes, you delighted tonight in trying to get a rise out of Lord Blackwood, and I think you fail to see just how dangerous and idiotic that is.” She answered. “Please don’t take this in a negative manner, but I think it’s best if you both go home now. I do thank you for coming, but I think that might be best.” “Valid points all . . . . but you still neglected to answer my question. Why don’t you want us to attend with the other gentlemen?” He asked. “Because. Tonight is one of the orders celebrations and while I am hosting and entertaining the ladies who are unaware of their husband’s beliefs and practices, they are going to adjourn to see to other matters.” She said as discreetly as possible. “More human sacrifices I presume?” Holmes said. “No.” Katherine motioned for him to keep his voice down for to many reasons to list. “I saw the rituals they want to perform and I promise you that no human sacrifices are needed. But I don’t want to tempt the order of the evening being changed on YOUR account.” She was still trying to stay discreet, but it was clear she felt they would be in danger if they stayed any longer. “Holmes, It was a gracious enough gesture to invite us here tonight. Let’s not overstay our welcome.” Watson said realizing that Katherine’s warning wasn’t to be taken lightly. She knew more about what was going on than they did, and he knew she didn’t want them in danger. “I suppose your right. And I’d hardly want to upset or offend our hostess.” Holmes said with a smile that made Katherine’s skin crawl. She wasn’t sure if he was going to simply leave or decide to try and tempt fate. “We’ll go Katherine. Thank you, it was a lovely evening.” Watson said grabbing hold of Holmes arm and hustling him off towards the front door before he could protest any louder. Disappointment Katherine sat at her vanity in her nightgown brushing her long hair out over her shoulders. Blackwood was watching her in silence as he took another sip of his night cap. “I found it interesting that Holmes and his lap dog disappeared just after dinner.” He said casually. “I’m certain they have many duties to see too. A doctor and an Inspector for the yard, I imagine they’re on call all the time.” She said feeling his eyes on her, and knowing the displeased tone that she could hear in his voice all too well. He knew that she sent them away, and it apparently had interfered in his plans somehow. “Of course. Although were that the case, I find it odd that they accepted our invitation at all. Seeing as how they are so incredibly busy.” He said never taking his eyes off her. She hated this. That ice cold glare that he could make even the toughest of men wilt and cower in his presence. “Well, they have been employed by us for many months and were well compensated for time, expenses and aid. No doubt they thought it would be rude to decline.” She said keeping her eyes in the mirror now as she combed her hair out a bit more. Blackwood fell silent and finished his drink before putting the glass aside as he stood and approached her. Katherine saw him in the mirror and her hand slowed a bit as a shiver went down her spine. He’d been drinking all night, she noticed that his glass was never empty and he continually drank from it. She neither knew why he was drinking, nor what to expect for his behavior when having consumed such a large amount of spirits. Putting down her brush, she cleared her throat and stood. “It was such a long night, it’s going to be morning before long. We should probably retire.” She said starting to walk swiftly past him to the bed. However he caught her by the arm and pulled her back to him. “You’re soft spot for Holmes and his lap dog is starting to become an irritating hindrance.” He said in a low voice glaring at her. Katherine was doing her absolute best not to look up at him, and unconsciously cowered away from him slightly. “I’m starting to wonder if there isn’t more going on between you then I first suspected.” He said in a low tone. “No,” She said softly having to clear her throat a bit to get the words out. “They merely helped us to find our sons and bring them home. I’m grateful to them for their help.” “Hmm. So grateful that you would cross me to show gratitude.” He said his hand squeezing tighter around her arm causing her to wince at the pain. “I’ve told you before that I have my reasons for what I do, and interfering with my plans is not a wise course for you to take.” “I didn’t mean to interfere, My Lord.” She said in a quiet voice. “They were not part of our order, I thought it best that they not stay for the rest of the evening when they already have so many suspicions about you.” “Then it was for my sake was it.” He said not believing that for a second. His hand was so tight around her arm now that her hand was starting to turn white, and she felt as though she was going to pass out from the overwhelming pain. “Please,” She whispered. “You’re hurting me.” She said trying to pull away a bit even though he was far too strong. “Quiet, or this won’t be the extent of the pain you’ll be in tonight.” He hissed. “You seem to choose to ignore the fact that Holmes single goal in life is to put my head on a pike. Is that what you want as well?” “No! Of course I don’t!” She said quickly. “I’m starting to have my doubts about that. You continually aid them, let them escape, and warn them of danger. I also happen to know that you make more visits to Baker Street then you inform me of. So tell me Katherine,” Blackwood said shoving her into the nearby chair with a hard thrust. “Why this dangerous and rather unwise loyalty to those two miscreants?” Katherine grew quiet and turned her face away, just wishing this was a nightmare and she would wake up any moment and be safe from it. However, reality had a harsh bite to it and she could feel its sting clearly. “ANSWER ME!” Blackwood shouted. “If I’d helped you destroy them, if they hadn’t stopped me from poisoning them as sent me to do, or if they were killed the first time you attempted it . . . who would have found our children then? Would we have ever seen them alive again?” She said her eyes staying turned away bracing herself. “You’re explanation rests solely on that does it. You never had any faith that I could keep you and our children safe, and trusted that they could protect them instead.” Katherine looked up at him mortified. “No, that isn’t what I meant. . . .” She began quickly not certain how he could have come to such a conclusion. “Please, Henry . . . that isn’t . . .” She said starting to move forward on the chair wanting to calm him down. “Your own personal bodyguards at your beck and call at all hours of the day, every day of the week.” He hissed his look darkening even more. “My mortal enemies and you conspire with them constantly. Foolish, Katherine. Incredibly foolish.” Reaching out he snatched the front of her nightgown and pulled her up slightly from the chair leaning closer to her face. “I’ve given you everything from the day we were wed, and all I have ever asked of you is loyalty and obedience.” “I have given you nothing but my loyalty and admiration . . . .” Her words came to a stop and her fear seemed to melt away as her eyes went wide turning to shock. She had placed her hands around his wrist. Blackwood paused looking at her not sure what could be attributed to the sudden change. “Caleb?” She said in a whisper . . . “Whose with him?” She questioned as if she was starring further into Blackwood’s eyes trying to see. Blackwood’s found himself somewhat exposed as he pushed her back and dropped her into the chair. “What are you talking about Katherine.” He said turning away and composing himself as he strolled over to poor himself another drink. Katherine was quiet and her eyes remained on him. “Caleb is in the nursery with his brothers.” Katherine’s fear was forgotten as she stood and walked over to him slowly, “No, not his brothers. His brothers are older, their hair is a different color . . .” She said walking around the end of the dresser where she could see his face. “It looked like a mirror image . . . like there were two of him.” “Nonsense.” He said taking a drink from his glass. “You’re simply tired from hosting such a large gathering.” Her eyes stayed glued to him, as though she was trying to sort out what she had seen by seeing it again. At the same time, however she could see and feel his resistance to let her in. “You trained me to see. You nurtured my gift, and brought it out of me when I begged you not to.” Blackwood finished his drink, as though he didn’t care what she was saying and paid no attention. “What are you hiding from me?” She questioned. When he didn’t answer, she reached for his arm. “Henry what are you hiding!” She cried. However he caught her wrist and jerked her against him, “How dare you.” He said before backhanding her causing her to fall to the floor. Needless to say, Katherine was stunned and a bit shocked by the blow. “Don’t you ever try to get into my head without my permission!” He roared. Her hand cupped the side of her face where a huge red mark from the sting of his smack made her very eye pulsate. “You are playing a very dangerous game, Katheirne. And I am running out of patience for your foolishness.” He turned and stormed out, slamming the door of their bedroom behind. The sound made Katherine jump as her hand still covered her face and tears escaped her eyes. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
