Moonlit Nights
Norrington stood on the deck of his ship in silence lost in his thoughts. On the Brightside of things he was well away from Port Royal and Lord Becket and would no longer have to listen to the voice of the man he absolutely loathed more than anything for forcing hell on himself and Bonnie. Ruining a marriage that was turning out to be quite well.
“I’m afraid there’s been no new reports Admiral Norrington.” The voice of his second in command said breaking the silence. James gave a nod acknowledging him. “We’re do to make port in three days. Hopefully one of our contacts there will have some information that well better equip us with some sort of direction in which to search, sir.”
“The only one that has even the slightest clue of where they are going is Jack Sparrow himself Lieutenant. Even then it’s doubtful that he has a clear idea of where they are off too.”
“Yes sir.” The lieutenant said giving his salute before turning and walking away from the Admiral who seemed to want his space at the moment. James was conflicted with so many different feelings. He partly wanted to find Bonnie to see her again, but then on the other hand he didn’t want to find them . . . she was safer not being found. Among other aspects of the complications of finding her and not finding her, he was lost in thought.
Caught
Bonnie and Jack where shackled and kept on their knees along with the others found aboard the ship. Weapons were pointed at them and they were not allowed to move, as they were threatened with instant death.
Jack had noticed that Bonnie had been ill as of late, which was why they missed their last jump in vessels and had remained on this one. She was looking rather pale now which made her sway a bit even on her knees. Sparrow leaned towards her a bit when one of the soldiers stepped passed them and whispered, “Breathe deep, try to keep your head.” He said quickly, knowing that what she really needed was to like down and a drink of water.
“Jack.” She whispered as her eyes closed and she tried to keep steady. Swallowing a little she opened her eyes and looked at him, “Please, escape if you can. Don’t worry about me. You’re to well known. I’m only slowing you down, I’m going to get you killed.”
“I left you once, I’ll not do it again.” He said quickly.
“QUIET OVER THERE!!!” A roar came from a guard who quickly came over and kicked Sparrow. However, Jack took his shackled hands and used the chain between them to wrap around the guards ankle and flip the solider down on the deck. All of the prisoners roared in laugher at the foolish way the solider looked and was made to fall.
“What’s all this nonsense.” A voice said as the men in Blue coats that indicated they were the officers appeared on the deck of the captured ship and walked over. Bonnie didn’t hear the voice, she was to ill and her eyes were closed almost delirious. Sparrow on the other hand, did recognize him. How could he not? Calling attention to himself was only going to solidify their capture, and ruin any chance of escape but he looked at his sister who was quite ill and knew that she needed help. Of all the people in the world that would see she got it, this man would.
“Well former Commodore it seems you’ve moved up in the world. But you really should teach your subordinates manners when it comes to dealing with women.” It took James a moment to identify who was speaking but then he realized who it was and recognized the face.
His eyes went wide as he moved closer, “Sparrow.” Before anything else could be said, Bonnie collapsed against another one of the prisoners. Norrington realized that his search had come to an end, they had found the two they had been sent to find. “Take this woman to my quarters, and fetch the surgeon immediately. Lieutenant!” He shouted to have his second in command oversee the charge of the other prisoners.
Time
Jack, James, and two other officers stood in the cabin where the surgeon was looking after Bonnie. Of course, Sparrow was shackled and chained securely, as there was no intention of letting him escape regardless of the circumstances. Finally, the surgeon finished his examination after making sure she was well cared for and walked over to the group of men.
“Well?” James wanted to know.
“I doubt very much we’ll make it to port before she gives birth. She’s gone into labor. She’s going to have this child at sea.” The doctor said keeping his voice down. The men looked at each other.
“This is a military vessel. She can’t have her child aboard this ship.” One of the officers said.
“Well what do you propose she do exactly? Cross her knees and keep the blessed event from occurring until a more convenient time and place prevents itself?” Jack said giving the man a look, wondering if he was really that daft.
Norrington rolled his eyes at Sparrow before looking at the surgeon, “Can you aid her?”
“I am a military surgeon, sir. I’ve never had experience with this sort of thing before. If she had some sort of sickness, or fever, or wound I could fix her up right quick. But . . . . I’m afraid midwives are in short supply in His Majesties Navy.”
“Bollix.” James found himself saying, “There are well over 500 men aboard this ship and thousands of others on the ships in the fleet that can be flagged aboard if necessary. One of them must have had experience with their own children. Find someone, and get them to assist you in helping her anyway you can.”
“Yes sir.” The surgeon and officers said as they hurried out of the room to carry out his order. James ran his hand over his face feeling a bit dumbfounded at the entire situation. Looking over he saw that Jack had moved a little closer to where Bonnie lay resting and was looking down at her watching over her while she slept.
Norrington walked over next to him looking at her as well. She didn’t look comfortable at all. Tormented would be almost the only thing that could describe her. She looked very pale, and there was sweat on her skin, a look of pain and discomfort on her face.
“So you and I, brothers, aye?” Jack said looking towards Norrington a moment with a smirk.
“Not on purpose I assure you. And not anymore. Or weren’t you informed of that little bit of news.” Norrington replied dryly keeping his eyes on Bonnie. His tone wasn’t accusing Bonnie for the misfortune, more like the words held contempt for Beckett.
Jack glanced between Norrington and Bonnie slightly before leaning his head back a little. “You know, being a pirate isn’t all bad mate.”
“I think you forget, that I had the misfortune of tasting the bitter life of a pirate for a brief time Sparrow. You’re not fooling anyone, or selling anything with that line.”
“Maybe.” Jack looked at James, “But then you didn’t exactly have any loved ones you wanted to be with.” Norrington looked at Sparrow. “The only way Bonnie is ever going to be free of Lord Beckett is if you let her go with me, and if you come with us.”
James starred at Sparrow a bit taken aback by his words, but the serious look on Sparrows face only seemed to make him even more dumbstruck. Yet before he could respond, say anything, or have a reaction, the doors of the cabin opened and the surgeon returned.
Hard Labor Pains
Norrington stayed with Bonnie and held her hand tight, unable to stay away when her labor really began to take form. She was quite ill and half conscious even with the extreme pain she was in. The fever that she had contracted the past few days made it more difficult even though it made her extremely cooperative as she did what she was instructed to do.
“James.” She said as she held his hand tighter. In her delirium she began to weep and apologize begging for forgiveness for all of the wrongs she had done to Norrington. Even though Norrington had originally ordered that Jack be taken down to the brig, Sparrow remained in the far dark corner of the cabin waiting and listening to all that was going on.
“It’s alright Bonnie. Everything’s going to be all right. I’m here, try to calm down, and push sweetheart.” He said holding his handkerchief to her forehead a moment before patting her face dry.
“I’ll die, I’d rather die than go back to him. I promise you I’ll die first.” She said as another sharp pain stretched her body causing her to cry out. James held her hand tighter looking at the doctor and the boson that they had found who had apparently bred 14 children of his own and was well versed in this area.
“Darling, please. Don’t think of that, don’t think of all of that now. Just try to focus on having the baby. Push darling, as hard as you can.” He said trying to get her to concentrate on the main thing.
“She might not be aware of what’s happening, Admiral Norrington.” The doctor suggested as he reached up opening her eyelids looking at each one. “She’s so deep in her fever, she’s feeling pain and the delirium is making her recall things that are causing guilt.”
“Well do something, give her something.” Norrington demanded trying to hold Bonnie down as she started to push and toss slightly.
“I can’t until after the child is delivered. It could hinder the birthing process and endanger them both. I can treat her fever, but not until after the baby is born.” James sighed as he looked at Bonnie and carefully patted her face wiping the sweat from her eyes.
“Bonnie, darling.” He whispered into her ear. “Everything is alright. Your safe. Your safe here with me, and . . . .” He loathed to say it, he hated it to say it, but it’s all he knew that was left to make her feel safe. “ . . . and your brother Johnny. Jack Sparrow. We’re at sea, Beckett doesn’t know where we are, he can’t find us. Your safe darling. No one can harm you here. Your safe.” He whispered stroking her hair as he patted her face with his handkerchief again. After a moment she seemed to start to calm down and relax a little, her hands still holding on to his arm that was around her, but her body seemed to relax from where it was tensed before. “You’re safe.” He reassured her once more continuing to stroke her hair as he once did.
Afterbirth
James stood on deck looking out at sea as the bell began to clang the shift change. A guard brought Sparrow up on deck and beside the Admiral who nodded towards the Solider signaling his dismissal to leave the two men alone. The solider saluted and left them.
“Bonnie is resting. The surgeon says that she’ll recover, but she needs rest and care. She could have died from just the fever alone, having to deliver a child on top of it and leaving through the ordeal is extraordinary.” He said never looking at Sparrow once.
“Did you really expect any less of her?” Jack said.
“No but I could have expected more of you.” Norrington snapped. Jack arched a brow as he looked at the Admiral hardly expecting that outburst. “I’ve no choice now but to take her back to Port Royal. There’s no escaping for her in her health. If you managed to find some sort of daring escape she couldn’t go with you in her condition, she can’t be moved. It would be signing her death warrant. If you would have had any brains left in that head of yours you would have landed somewhere she could have gotten help long before this day came instead of jumping from ship to ship for months on end before this happened.”
“Well that’s a little difficult when we’ve got every East India Trading Company blood hound in the Caribbean on our tails, my dear Admiral Norrington. You’ve made them so efficient that getting into any sort of port now a day’s requires swimming from a ship a few miles to shore, and unfortunately, as you could see for yourself, that even though she has always been capable of swimming that far before, she hasn’t been up to it as of late. Honestly, I have regretted not going back and killing Beckett before we departed from the island every day since we left the dock at Port Royal. It would have made things so much simpler on everyone.”
Norrington glanced at Jack when he made his comment. “Do you really think death would absolve all of his sins, Sparrow. He’s ruined countless lives with his lust.”
“It wouldn’t absolve him of anything. But it would certainly remove him from causing further damage wouldn’t it.” Jack Looked at Norrington. “And what about you.” He said turning the conversation away from Beckett for the moment, “What of Bonnie and the child.”
“What of them.” James asked not sure what he was driving at.
“Do you condemn them both because Beckett took it upon himself to father that baby without anyone’s permission or will being involved? Yours, Bonnie’s or the baby who indeed had no say in the forming of its existence? Many a child has been brought into this world without being asked to be.”
“She’s not mine anymore, Sparrow. How many times must you be reminded that our marriage was annulled before it penetrates that thick skull of yours so that you’ll remember? I’ve no say in the matter of what happens to her and the child.” His eyes turned back towards the sea obviously agitated at his own words.
“Only because you choose not to have. Is this position as admiral really so important to you that you’d throw their lives to a dog like Beckett to maintain it?” Jack demanded to know.
“Another word and you’ll not see the light of day until we make port and are led to the gallows Sparrow.” Norrington snapped having had his conscience pricked enough for one night without Sparrows help. Jack grew silently just looking at the Admiral. Norrington took a moment to collect his thoughts. “Whatever was between myself and Miss Rhett, is private and none of your concern. I’ll thank you to keep to your own business, and out of things that do not concern you.”
Turning he looked at the pirate, “And if you have any care for the well being of that young woman who is resting below in my quarters, you’ll keep your relations to yourself. Otherwise you might sign both of their death warrants. I don’t think you need to be reminded of that.”
Mercenary
Bonnie sat quietly holding the child in her arms when James slowly approached. She looked up to see him standing at the foot of the bed and didn’t know quite what to say, and found it difficult to look up at him.
James, on the other hand, couldn’t take his eyes off of her. She looked absolutely beautiful. The clothes she had been traveling in simply wouldn’t do, as they hadn’t been washed for some time, obviously she hadn’t been in a position to keep them clean, so she was given one of James night shirts. Needless to say, it was very appealing indeed on her young form. Her hair was down and brushed back over her shoulders, and she had a glow about her. Perhaps it was the glow that motherhood brought. The way she held the child in her arms rocking gently, comfortingly was so natural, so perfect. He couldn’t help but look at her in awe and smile softly at the scene before his eyes.
Moving closer, he carefully sat down beside her. Norrington knew when she was somewhat uncomfortable and now was one of those times. He was making her feel that way, his mere presence was doing it. Yet he wanted to talk to her, see with her, just spend a bit of time with her.
“Beautiful.” He complimented looking at the baby, as he reached up touching the small ones tiny hand. The miniature sized fingers slowly grasped the Admirals huge finger in comparison bringing a smile to both Bonnie and James faces. “Just like her mother.”
Bonnie’s eyes shifted towards Norrington a moment when he said that before she looked back down at the baby. “She’s . . . she is beautiful.” Bonnie said softly holding the baby close with a soft smile.
James eyes shifted towards Bonnie again, wanting to further to conversation, happy she was talking to him. “What name have you decided to give her?” He asked.
“I . . . don’t know.” Bonnie said hesitantly.
James could tell that she was completely confused about everything and that it was difficult for her to speak about anything really. She didn’t have a direction in which to go and no real point of origin to start from.
The Admiral reached up and gently took one of her hands, making sure that she held the baby securely with the other and looked up at her running his thumb over the back of her hand, caressing it gently.
“She is your daughter, Bonnie. This is your child. She has your beautiful eyes, your lovely features, and I have no doubt she will grow to be a woman as wonderful and as caring as her mother.” His eyes turned back towards the baby for a moment, “It doesn’t matter who the father is . . . because it is her mother who will make the biggest impact on her life.”
Bonnie closed her eyes as tears escaped down her cheeks, “James.” She whispered as she grasped his hand, “We were supposed to have a child.” She whispered. “She was supposed to be ours.”
“I know darling.” He said holding her hand, “I know. But what does it matter? Here is a perfect, healthy, beautiful angel. She is yours.” He paused a moment before looking into her eyes, “And that is enough.”
Bonnie paused a moment looking into his eyes, her breath catching in her chest at his words. “Enough?” She whispered.
“I can’t let him take you from me again, Bonnie. You or the baby. He’s hardly proven himself to be a man. He’s completely shirked the responsibilities of becoming a proper husband to you. How can he possibly be expected to live up to being a father and take on the responsibilities of being one when every other decent and proper thing has escaped him.”
“He won’t let us stay together, James.” She said the moment of happiness and the glimmer of hope leaving her eyes. “He sent you to find me and Jack. Who knows how many others or what sort of bounty is on our heads to bring us back to him.
“Then I suppose . . . we’ll have to do something about that.” Taking her hand in his he kissed her knuckles gently. “But you needn’t worry about such things now. You need your rest, and so does she.”
Nerves
Weeks had rolled by and no word had arrived from Admiral Norrington about Jack Sparrow, Bonnie, or the baby that would have arrived by this time. Beckett was growing restless and his patients, had he any to begin with, was wearing thin.
“Is there any news of her?” Beckett demanded to know when Mercer approached him from behind.
“None from the ships that just arrived sir, however . . . some rather disturbing news has come to our attention that needs addressing.” Beckett could only imagine what sort of trouble there could be now. Pirates were a meddlesome bunch and all sorts of mischief could arise just from their existence. He was more than anxious to have them wiped clean from the earth.
“It seems that Admiral Norrington has disappeared.” Beckett turned around looking at Mercer when he heard these words. “Coming across a ship, they took several prisoners on to his ship, one of them was a woman. A woman who had contracted a fever and was in labor. Two weeks after she gave birth, it seems that both she and Admiral Norrington, the Baby, and yet another prisoner vanished from the vessel.” Mercer said with a knowing tone. Anyone hearing the facts that was well acquainted with the situation could easily put two and two together.
Beckett’s temper flared. “I want every officer off that ship brought in for questioning now, I want the surgeon that attended that woman standing before me immediately.” He ordered.
“Yes sir.” Mercer saluted before turning on his heel and instantly leaving having already had given the orders to bring the officers ashore.
