Aislinn went to one of the dress shops under Admiral Norrington’s
direction the next day as she only had a few dresses, hardly any at all, and
James insisted it was time that she acquired a few more. When she went inside,
the shopkeeper walked over and greeted her.
“Good Morning, how may I help you this fine day Miss?” He questioned.
She smiled politely a bit nervous to be there by herself, “Good
Morning. My husband instructed me to see about purchasing some dresses?” She
said a little sheepishly. “My name is Aislinn Norrington and I . . .” She
began not knowing how to conduct this meeting but the clerk instantly seemed to
take over.
“Ah! Lady Norrington, we’ve been expecting you. Admiral Norrington
has expressed that you are to be well taken care of and everything is to be put
on his account. Please, come this way.” Aislinn half smiled as he showed her
the way and she quickly tried to keep up with him.
James knew what she would do if he had left it completely up to her to
purchase her attire, and until she became more accustomed to wearing clothing
that didn’t look as though she was the member of some sacred order that
resided deep in the snow capped mountains, he had better choose what styles and
cuts her dresses were to be made for her.
After the meeting with the fleet officers dispersed, Beckett followed
after James and put his hand on his shoulder. “So? How have things been
working for you? Everything been going smoothly since your move back to Port
Royal?” He questioned.
“I think so. The fleet seems to be whipping itself into shape in a
timely fashion. The officers are keeping the men in tip top training, and all
the ships are in excellent condition.” Norrington said as he closed the book
he was looking in and tucked it under his arm.
“How about personally? Family life going well and all that?”
“Yes, yes. Aislinn is doing well. Getting to know the other ladies of
her station. Still a little nervous but I don’t think it will be to long
before she gets more comfortable with the feel of things.”
“Good, good.” Beckett fell silent for a few moments as they continued
to walk. Norrington could feel something awkward about the silence, then
something quite odd, then realized there was something downright wrong with the
huge silence gap. He stopped and looked at Lord Beckett
“Why do you have such a sudden concern about my Family and it’s
welfare?” He questioned looking Becket squarely in the eye. Cutler didn’t
quite know how to answer, nor was he able to look at him in the eye.
Norrington’s mind started to quickly sort through the things that could cause
this sort of reaction, but when it came down to it, there was only one thing.
His jaw clinched as he turned on his heel and started to storm down the road.
“I could have that bastard dishonorably discharged from his post as a military
surgeon for this.”
Beckett kept pace with James, “He was under orders to keep me informed
of anything of large consequence that might have some affect on your duties,
James. Emotionally or otherwise, and I think that this qualifies. Give him some
credit, he kept the loss of your child quiet for weeks before finally coming to
me about it . . .”
James spun around stepping so close to Beckett their faces were almost
touching. Norrington starred into Cutlers eyes and spoke in a low tone of
warning “Don’t, ever, utter that out loud again Lord Cutler Beckett, not
even if your alone in your room, under your blankets with your head covered by a
pillow.” Lord Beckett seemed a bit caught off guard by this, but could see by
the look in James eyes that this was not a light warning. “I wanted this kept
quiet for a reason.”
“You aren’t the first man this has happened to. You’ve nothing to
be ashamed of.” Beckett said not quite understanding.
“This has nothing to do with me.” He said wishing he’d just stop
talking about it already. Shaking his head he stepped back looking away as his
eyes shifted up the road in the direction their house would be. “Aislinn
doesn’t know she was with child . . . I would prefer it to stay that way.”
“Isn’t that something she is entitled to know Admiral?” Beckett
asked.
“Don’t presume to stand there and try to lecture me on something you
have absolutely no idea about, Lord Beckett. I’m married to a child bride, who
is struggling each day to become part of the world around her. Now unless you
have one the same age who was raised under the same circumstances, I would
appreciate it if you would stay out of it.” Lord Beckett seemed rather
surprised at how out right and blunt the Admiral was, but James was in no mood
to sugar coat anything.
Norrington lay propped against his pillows on their bed reading some
books by candlelight, making marks where they were needed. Finally Aislinn came
into the room wearing her robe over her nightgown. James looked over his book
arching a brow as he watched her carrying a candle with her. Looking back into
his book he made another marking, “Do you always go wondering about the house
in the middle of the night in your attire for bed?”
“Sometimes.” She said softly putting the candle down by the bed as
she slipped her feet from her slippers and untied the ribbons on her robe.
Norrington noticed how short and non specific her answer was. He knew something
was up.
“What were you doing.” He asked wanting to know what was going on as
he continued his work in the book. She paused a moment keeping her back to him
before she untied the last ribbon and swallowed the lump in her throat. Slipping
her arms from the robe she put it aside.
“Just making sure the kittens were warm.” Norrington sighed and
closed the book. He knew she was up to something.
“oh, Aislinn!” He said looking at her. The young woman sat down on
the bed next to him with her hands folded in her lap and her eyes downcast
knowing she was going to be scolded. “Kittens? What kittens? When did the word
‘kittens’ enter into our lives?”
“. . . a carriage ran over their mother in the street this morning.
Their eyes are just barely open, they aren’t old enough to be left on their
own yet they’ll die.” She said. “It’s only for a few weeks, and then
they can go on their way.” Her eyes said pleadingly as they looked at him.
“For Gods sake! Kittens this time!” He exclaimed.
“There is only five of them, and they stay in a box behind the stove in
the kitchen where it’s warm. They won’t be a nascence. I promise you won’t
even know they’re there. The maid and the cook have already taken a shine to
them and they look after them when they need to be taken care of.” She said
hurriedly.
“They are supposed to be taking care of the house and the meals, not
looking after stray animals. WHICH I am sure when I am not at home you do your
fare share of anyway. In fact, I’m sure of it!” Aislinn looked at him
quietly with big round blue eyes. James looked at her for a moment. It was hard
to continue to scold her when she gave him that look. She had such a big heart
when it came to animals. To any sort of stray really. He grumbled slightly with
a sigh of slight defeat. “This is the last time. The ABSOLUTELY last time.”
Aislinn smiled and wrapped her arms around him hugging him tight kissing
his cheek. “I’m not joking. This isn’t going to work again.” He said
looking at her. She just continued to smile and kissed his cheek again hugging
him a bit more. Norrington reached over putting his book down on the table with
the others before wrapping his arms around her. “Look at me Aislinn, know that
I am putting my foot down on this. No more stray animals of any kind. Or
children, or . . . whatever sorts of life you might find that might possibly be
in search of a home is to pass our doorstep. Never again. Understand? This is
it. It’s final. The last.”
The young woman kissed his cheek again still smiling brightly and he
groaned in simple frustration having a feeling that as soon as the kittens were
on their way, something else would suddenly appear if not sooner. James kissed
her before looking in her eyes, “You’re a pest.” He mumbled.
“Thank you.” She whispered as he kissed her again, James pulled her
over his lap as he lay her across the bed moving to lie next to her, keeping his
arm around her as he kissed her again.
“For what?” He questioned leaning up on his arm a moment, swiping a
bit of hair that fell out of place away from her face.
“My clothing. You really didn’t have to go to so much trouble.” She
said resting her hand on his shoulder when he lay over her looking down into her
eyes. “Do you think it’s . . . .well . . . necessary for me to have so
many?” She questioned trying not to sound ungrateful, which she wasn’t of
course.
“Darling, when we were married you hardly had anything at all. You need
different attire for different occasions, different times of the day and such.
Not to mention as the Admiral’s wife I think it’s only fitting you should be
able to look your best at all times.” He half smirked, “And darling . . . if
you think for a moment I was going to have you running about Port Royal in those
God awful thick wool London winter dresses that you came to me in . . . you
would have melted away into a puddle before you even stepped foot off the
ship.” He kissed her. “As I understand it there are a few that are being
ordered that won’t be here right away.”
“Yes . . . yes the shopkeeper did say something about that.” Aislinn
remembered.
“Well no need to worried about that, plenty of others are going to be
delivered and you will look lovelier then ever.” Norrington smiled a bit as he
leaned down kissing her neck and then her shoulder laying over her a bit more
keeping her in a firm embrace. Holding her body close to his own loving the feel
of her warmth even if it was through their clothing.
“You married me for children . . .” Aislinn whispered after a moment.
James found himself effectively frozen in place at her words, as thought he had
just had the point of a blade pressed against the back of his neck. “didn’t
you James?” She asked softly when he didn’t answer and seemed to have
stopped all movement.
“What brought this on.” He said finding this subject coming up yet
again, as it had more often then not even though he had constantly tried to
steer all conversation away from it. Something kept drawing her back to it, and
it kept coming back and James simply couldn’t stand the bombardment any longer
without knowing his attacker.
“What do you mean?” Aislinn said not sure how to answer.
James sighed deciding that any efforts he had been trying to make were
effectively thwarted for this evening and he rolled off to the side as he raised
his head looking at her slightly less then amused. “The subject of children
has been on your tongue for the past few days . . . I would like to know why
it’s been there.” He said making his inquiry as clear as possible.
“That is why you married me . . . isn’t it?” She said again looking
down a little before her eyes moved back up to his. Norrington folded his hands
together as he leaned on one elbow deciding that he was going to have to give a
little to get anything apparently.
“That would be one of many reasons for marriage. I would like children
someday, yes.” That seemed like a safe enough answer that didn’t seem as
though he wanted children this instant or the only reason he had in mind for
taking her as his bride. Aislinn didn’t say anything as her eyes turned away
from him again. Norrington could tell there was something she wasn’t saying.
“Aislinn . . . why is this subject suddenly of such great concern?”
It looked as though she started to say something but the words wouldn’t
come out and she bit her lip looking away again. The Admiral studied her for
several moments having the feeling that it was going to be one of those times he
was going to have to assess the situation and try to guess what the problem was.
He looked at her as his mind ran over the possibilities and then finally it
clicked. He arched his brow and then rolled his eyes chuckling slightly.
Aislinn looked up at him hearing his candid laugher not understanding
what seemed so funny. “Darling . . . you mustn’t feel as though your lacking
in some way or inadequate . . . not everyone starts a family the moment after
their wedding vows are taken.” Apparently he had hit it squarely on the mark
as Aislinn’s eyes turned away and her cheeks blushed. Norrington reached up
touching her chin turning her face back towards him. “Don’t worry. It
won’t be sometime until we start a family of our own. That’s my decision.”
He said touching her nose, “There’s nothing wrong with you.” He said with
a reassuring smile and a wink.
She smiled a little and nodded feeling a little better with his
reassurance. “Good.” He said as he wrapped his arm around her. Aislinn
wrapped both arms around his neck and hugged him tightly. Norrington’s smile
dimmed somewhat feeling as though he had somehow lied to her, but thinking it
was perhaps better to make her feel at ease.
Norrington went down to the docks before sunrise to inspect some of the
ships that were being outfitted to new specifications by order of the East India
Trading Company and his majesties royal forces. Aislinn decided to go out for a
walk since it was such a beautiful day and see some of Port Royal that she
hadn’t gotten to see yet instead of staying cooped up in the big empty house
by herself.
About two hours into her day, she found herself wondering into the less
inhabited part of Port Royal. Wide-eyed and curious about this newfound
unexplored territory she ventured forth eagerly. Biting her lip she looked
behind her from left to right having a feeling that she shouldn’t, but no one
seemed to be paying attention and there was no one about who seemed to care any
way. Gathering her skirts slightly, she turned and hurried off into the trees.
It wasn’t long before she came to a small pool of water that was
connected to a stream of running water. Aislinn was looking around at all the
beautiful trees and plants that seemed almost untouched by human hands. It was
hard to believe that there was a bustling port on the same island not even a
mile away, if that.
Approaching the pool of water she could see how clear it was, and could
hear the sound of the water lapping against the rocks. Her eyes lit up when she
found that she could see colorful fish in the pool and she moved closer kneeling
down and crawling to the edge on her hands and knees.
“You are definitely not from around here.” A voice said startling
Aislinn. She turned her eyes wide not having heard someone come. He smiled,
“Oh sorry, didn’t mean to frighten you.” He walked passed her and sat down
by the pool of water with a bit of line and some other strange looking pieces of
equipment that caught Aislinn’s attention. The young man was perhaps a few
years older then her. 19 or 20 at the most, and had a very charming smile.
Aislinn watched him for a moment and cocked her head. He wasn’t
threatening in the least bit. He just sat quietly baiting his hook, then
throwing his line in the water. He smiled at her acknowledging that she was
there before going on about his business. “Why did you say that?” She asked
after a moment.
The young man looked up at her. “What?” He said. “That you aren’t
from around here?” Aislinn nodded. “I didn’t mean anything by it . . .
it’s just that . . .well, I’ve never seen a lady dressed like that out in
the woods much less crawling about looking at fish the way you are. It’s just
different. That’s all.”
Aislinn frowned and looked away realizing she was being improper again
and started to brush off her dress and straighten up her hair. The young man
quickly held up his hand, “like I said I didn’t mean anything by it. You
have every right to look at fish like anyone else.” Aislinn looked at him.
“What I mean to say is . . . don’t stop because of me . . . I . . . I
don’t mind you looking at fish . . . I won’t go telling anyone if that’s
what your worried about.”
It didn’t take long for the two to become friends, as they were very
much alike. The young man introduced himself as Stephen and of course Aislinn
introduced herself, although they did keep things on a first name basis.
Strangely it was rather easy for Aislinn to talk to this young man, perhaps
because he was closer to her in age and more childlike in nature then anyone
else she was around.
With her skirts tied up so they wouldn’t get wet, Aislinn stood in the
shallow part of the water, and Stephen stood behind her holding her hands in his
as they bent over holding perfectly still. They were both smiling and Aislinn
didn’t seem to be able to stop giggling as several bouts of laughter had
already broken out as a result of the feat they were trying to accomplish.
“Shhh . . Aislinn, if you aren’t quiet your going to scare all the fish
away!” He said nudging her slightly. She bit her lip and nodded grinning from
ear to ear trying to stay serious.
“There, see him?” Stephen whispered. Aislinn’s eyes lit up seeing
an approaching fish and she nodded. As he neared, the young man pushed her hands
down in the water a little more slowly. When the fish was in the right spot,
Stephen quickly hoisted Aislinn’s hands and they captured the fish tossing him
up onto the shore. Quickly both of them hurried to the grass stumbling slightly
over each other as they chased after the wiggling fish. Stephen caught him up
and showed him to her.
“Oh he’s beautiful isn’t he!” Aislinn said.
“He is a beauty.” Stephen complimented.
“Now lets put him back.” She said looking at the young man. Stephen
looked at her wide eyed. Reaching out she put her hand on his arm, “Please
Stephen, before he dies?” She asked.
“After all that trouble you just want to let him go?” She nodded.
Stephen looked at her before looking at the fish. With a shrug and a sigh he
looked at Aislinn, “Not really my kind of fish anyway.” He leaned over into
the water and let the fish slip away.
Aislinn smiled watching him release the fish waving her goodbyes as he
swam away. Stephen smiled to never having had so much fun in one day that he
could remember. Just then, the sun went behind a tree causing it to become a bit
darker for a moment and Aislinn’s smile faded as she looked up and her eyes
popped open wide. “Oh my God, . . .”
“What is it? What’s the matter?” Stephen said as she quickly
reached over pulling her stockings back on and then her shoes.
‘I’ve been here all day. I’ll be late for dinner . . . I can’t
be.” She said quickly untying her dress and getting to her feet.
“Wait . . .Ai . . . Aislinn!” Stephen said getting to his own feet
but it was too late. She already disappeared off into the trees at a dead run.
