Chapter Thirteen - Knowing
“Drink this” he pushed the bottle into her hands, her fingers were cold and he
found himself holding them around the glass, helping her lift it to her mouth.
She gulped, once, twice and then coughed, finally looking at him forcing a weak
smile on to her face. She seemed smaller, much smaller than before as if she
had suddenly shrunk in on herself. She is just like you Jack a little voice
seemed to murmur in his head, she is what she needs to be to survive. After all
it is all about surviving innit?
He had bundled her up as the crew came pounding up the stairs, half pulling
her, half carrying her to his cabin, he thought of taking her back to her own.
He had hesitated as he had stumbled down the staircase, unsure if he wanted the
turmoil that was them together in his cabin. He had scarcely slept since the
last time she had been there, it had seemed like everything that was
comfortable about his own place had been rattled about and turned upside down
by her. But he did not know if she had rum there. And rum was what was needed,
rum was good for all sorts of things, unexpected turns of events being just one
of them.
Her eyes were unfocused, cloudy almost, that startling green seeming to be
covered in some sort of fog but she did look at him. Did drink and swallow,
slowly, carefully and he let out a breath. Moving his hands away, moving to
pour himself some rum, slightly shaking fingers raising the goblet to his lips
and watching, always watching.
Maia took another sip, just a sip, one then one more, concentrating on what
should be instinctive, sip and swallow, but she felt as though if she did not
she would not. So she drank carefully when all she really wanted to do was gulp
the liquor down. To lose herself in another reality. She was falling apart. She
had crumbled in front of Jack Sparrow, she had not wept like that when she had
been a child. She had shown weakness and she could not understand how it had
happened. She had shields, walls, rituals of protection that should have
prevented anything of this sort happening and yet she had cracked in front of
the very person that she feared she needed to be strongest against. Trust…she
heard the word whispered in her head and then heard it again spoken out loud.
Jack was talking to her.
“It is a matter of trust, you know more of me than I would like and I think I
have now seen more of you than what you would like.” He was watching her, rum
part way to his mouth but he was gauging her reaction, she began to listen properly
“so it would seem to me luv that we have equal reasons to keep this all just
between us.” He pointed at his chest then at her “you and I, you have my
memories…and..”he was still not really sure what he had seen of hers and
momentarily seemed to be floundering in thoughts most uncomfortable, but she
nodded at him to go on and so he did gesturing grandly, feeling on somewhat
firmer footing with every word spoken. He drank beginning to speak again when
she registered what she was feeling, the ship was moving.
“The wind?”
He looked taken aback for a moment then grinned and nodded, “right after you
had your little…er spell up top it came up again”
“Oh” she had a faint recollection of breeze in her hair when he had been
holding her, but that was all, but it all made some sort of horrible logic.
“You alright luv?” he was watching her with real concern, and she found it hard
to reconcile the anger she had seen early with the man now in front of her.
“yes…yes” she gave that forced smile again “thank you”
He wanted her to shout at him. To be all fire and ice, hot and cold, to have
that aura of power and mystery about her that made men swallow. He really
wished that she would stand up and throw the rum or start swearing, anything
but how she was, she seemed diminished, vulnerable. He did not want to feel
like this about some sea witch, he did not want to feel responsible. But he did
not want to goad her, to risk those tears again so he watched as she sipped at
her rum.
“Sorry, you were saying”
“It is not as you fear ” the words came out in a rush startling even him, as if
suddenly he knew what he was supposed to be saying “you and me, with what
happened back at that island that is what has made things change, what happened
with you that is just with us. No one else luv and you don’t need to fear me.”
He looked straight at her “I did not mean to do that, I did not expect that.”
She gave a shaky laugh and ran a hand through now tangled hair “neither did I
Jack”
They both sat and watched the other; the where to from here hanging in the air
between them but neither spoke the words.
Rum was good. Maia took another drink she was feeling steadier now, warmer and
Jack was not looking at her so intently, he was ambling about the room,
talking, picking things up and putting them down. Telling her of this place and
that, he was talking to her as if she was just anyone, no one had spoken to her
like that in….well she could not remember. He was not watching her, not
watching his words, obviously not even really thinking about what he was saying
as he occasionally broke into small verse of song. She felt a sudden rush of
feeling, affection, that was what she thought it was. Fu*k, the man has just
scared her half to death and she was looking at him with fondness. Life had been
much simpler before she had met Jack Sparrow.
He sensed her straighten, felt just a little shift in the energies that he
would have sworn that he could almost see swirling around her. She was righting
herself. He sang a little bit more, picking up an beaten silver dish that he
had found who knew where and making up a story about it as he went along. He
got quite caught up in the whole adventure, seeing everything so clearly in his
mind that he did not realize that she had stood to walk over to him until he
felt her hand on his arm.
“It’s a lovely story Jack….” He could see in her eyes that she knew that he had
been inventing, embellishing and he could also see that she did not mind and
that she knew his reasons. He felt an sudden urge to protect her, a most
unpirate like gallant sort of urge, he shook his head to clear the unsettling
thoughts. Watching her mouth her lips forming soft words “thank you…”
Her eyes were so green, clear and unclouded, so deep, so much there that he
thought that he almost understood and he found himself frozen, unable to move,
not wanting to move. Oh no not again, the words whispered through his head and
he did not know if they were his words or hers, or theirs but they were empty
words, he wanted to and she wanted him to, he knew that, felt that, but it had
to be him and it had to be willingly and madness though it might be he kissed
her.
