Chapter 12 – Mystery

Jack watched silently as he had for the past three days over the silent form of Oria. If he didn’t know better he would have left her days ago believing she would not come around. He glanced down at the wound again, this one was different, it wasn’t healing like the others. It was still there as raw and angry as the day it had been inflicted. He rested his head in his hands and kept up the silent vigil.

A knock came at the door but he didn’t glance back as Gibbs entered, “Captain… you’ve got to stop this now. The crew are getting worried and we need to know a destination.” Jack sighed quietly and thought through his options.

“Take us to Tortuga then.” Gibbs nodded and shouted the orders out before closing the door after him and entering further into what had become a shrine for Oria.

“Captain, you’ve been in here for three whole days, the crew have seen hide nor hair of ya. You haven’t even asked about how the Pearl faired in that storm or eaten but for necessity.” He paused and looked down at the still frame of the girl, “Jack… I don’t think she’s coming out of this one.” Jack shook his head slowly, his gaze still on her.

“No, she’ll pull through, she just needs time.” Gibbs rested a hand on Jack’s shoulder.

“When you’re ready to take back control of your ship, she’ll be waiting for you, ready to sail again.” Jack nodded faintly and listened to Gibbs receding footsteps. He reached for a cold hand and clasped it tightly in his own laying a soft kiss on the back as his eyes slipped closed in prayer.

“Please… God, please.” He whispered against the chilled skin of her hand.

“I don’t think he’s listening.” Jack’s eyes shot up to meet Oria’s, she smiled faintly, “I feel god awful… How long have I been out for?” He shot up instantly and kissed every inch of her face he could reach, his breath catching with relief. Oria laughed slightly and he sat next to her on the bed with a broad grin.

“You have no idea how relieved I am, I know you can’t die but still… you gave me a hell of a fright.” Oria smiled slightly and squeezed his hand gently with her own.

“Sara?” Jack looked pained and glanced away.

“She died in the explosions; the whole island sank because of them.” Oria swallowed down a choked sob and looked away.

“I’m sorry.” Oria whispered drawing Jack’s attention back to her, he brushed away several strands of hair soothingly.

“It’s all right. It wasn’t your fault. Besides, I had the choice of saving her or you. I chose you.” Oria nodded slowly and glanced down at the wound, she scowled at it.

“That’s going to need an iron.” Jack glanced down at it also.

“Why hasn’t it healed?” Oria sat up slowly Jack’s hands supporting and guiding till she was leant against him. She looked drained just from that and it sent shivers of fear down Jack’s spine that something so strong could be reduced to nothing by one strike.

“It’s been poisoned, they have a poison which I can’t heal. It won’t kill or scar but it’ll affect me with the same healing time and symptoms as it would a mortal. I’ll be out of action for a while.” Jack nodded slowly.

“Then will an iron actually help?” Oria laughed slightly and shook her head.

“I don’t know. Jack I need to lie down, I’m going dizzy.” He lowered her back down to the bed slowly and watched as she faded back into a fitful sleep.

:/

A week of fitful dozing and spats of awakening left Jack as weary as Oria, he refused to leave her side and risk her awakening without him there or in need of something and unable to get it without his assistance. Finally the path seemed to be getting clearer and she was capable of walking short distances and sitting up. For the first afternoon in a week and a half Jack was back on deck, Oria sat on a barrel gazing over the ocean Gibbs next to her and propping her up whenever her balance slipped slightly.

Slowly Jack guided the ship into the port of Tortuga still with one eye on Oria, she was annoyed that she was still unable to do the things she could before. At the minute walking from one side of the deck to the other without assistance was a challenge and it was frustrating her to no end. Keeping her balance for long periods of time was another thing slowly driving her insane, she wasn’t aware of losing it till either Jack or Gibbs propped her up.

With the ship finally into port the pair were left alone on the ship while the crew had their two day shore leave. Jack sank onto the barrel next to her and rested a hand on her ribs as she began to tilt towards him, he smiled faintly as she corrected herself and shook her head in annoyance.

“It’s driving me insane.” She growled, he smiled fondly and ran a hand over her arm soothingly.

“It’ll come back with time.” She sighed and nodded, “You’d best be getting some sleep, keep your energy up.” Another heavy sigh fell from her lips and his heart bled for her, mentally and spiritually she was ready to fight but physically she was only capable of waiting. He held her arm slightly and rested a hand on her back trying to be as un-patronising as possible and make her feel as if she was completely independent. She smiled faintly and stumbled into the bed with a weary sigh. Jack dragged the covers up and watched as her eyelids fluttered closed her long eyelashes casting long shadows down her cheeks, “Just going to get a bottle of rum from the stores.” Oria nodded sleepily and Jack left as quietly as possible.

He stepped into the moonlight with a sigh and scowled as he spotted a figure at the top of the boarding plank, “Can I help you mate?” The man nodded and held out a piece of parchment.

“For Captain Jack Sparrow.” Jack reached out and took it, the man disappeared instantly and he frowned down at the water stained parchment curiously. He would read it over a bottle of rum.
