Chapter 14
Three days
later they sat side by side on the beach, looking out into the sea, cutting
pieces of wood in shape to be used as spears for fishing.
Will
suddenly laughed, shook his head. Jack turned to him, smiled. “What is it?”
Will took his
hand. “We are on this island now for over a week. But just now I slowly begin
to wonder if we ever get away from here- and how. It just did not matter to me
– somehow it still does not matter.” He squeezed Jack´s fingers. “All that
matters to me is that we are together. I don´t care where.”
Jack
nodded. “I feel the same… But I am sure we won´t stay here forever. The island
was on the map, means people were here before. Ships will pass by – merchant
ships, smugglers…” He chuckled. “Pirates…”
For a moment
they both sat there silently. Then Jack glanced at Will.
“You
screamed last night… In your sleep…”
Will looked
up. “Did I? I don´t remember…”
“Yes… I
tried to wake you up, but you didn´t react and then you were silent again…”
Suddenly
Will shivered. “You are right… Now I remember… It was a dream… I was back…” he
breathed in deeply as if he was struggling for air. “I was back on the ship…
And the water…”
Jack
wrapped his arms around him, held him close. “I am sorry…” he whispered. “I am
sorry I made you remember…”
Will shook
his head, panting. “No… It´s okay… It was just… A bad dream… Just a memory…”
They
watched the crew far away on the beach, building up a huge pile of wood. They
did this every morning and every evening, setting it on fire so that they would
hopefully be seen by other ships.
Jack bit
his lip. “If someone finds us here… Do you think you will ever be able to sail
on a ship again – after what happened?”
Will let
out a small laugh. “I guess I have to… I can´t fly away from here, right?”
Jack was
silent again. He picked up a small sea shell, let his fingers run over it.
“I would
give it all up for you.” he said softly.
Will looked
at him. “What?”
“I would
give it up. The piracy. The ships. The sea. If we ever get back to land and if
you don´t want to be on a ship anymore… I would stay with you.”
Will´s eyes
widened. “No… You are a pirate, a sailor… You need a ship and the open sea… I
think you would die without the sea…”
Jack shook
his head. “No, Will. But I would die without you.”
They looked
into each others eyes, and Will bent forward. Their lips met for a long kiss.
“We will
see…” he whispered. “I will try… And I am sure when I am on ship again, after a few weeks it won´t…
Bother me anymore.”
But his
voice sounded unsure.
On the next
day they all sat together in the cooling shadow of a huge palm tree.
“Okay” Jack
said. “Once again. Who are we?”
Philips
took a deep breath. “We are sailors from the small merchant ship “Atlantis”
that got into a storm and crashed on a cliff. We were carrying food and rum
from Jamaica.”
They had
talked about what would happen if someone found and rescued them. None of them
had any desire to come home and then be arrested because of sailing on a
commandeered ship. Nor had Jack and Will any desire to be arrested because of
commandeering said ship.
Jack
nodded. “And my name is…?”
“Jack. Jack de la
Montez.”
“Right.”
When they
were alone again, Will grinned. “Jack de la Montez. What
a fancy, colourful name you made up.”
Jack
smiled. “It was the maiden name of my mother.”
Will
blushed. “I am sorry, I…”
Jack hugged
him, laughed. “Hey… No need to apologise.”
Will looked
at him for a long time.
“We still
have a problem.”
“What
problem?”
Will tugged
playfully at the small braids on Jack´s chin.
“You may
have a new name… But you still LOOK like Captain Jack Sparrow.”
“Oh NO…”
Half an
hour later…
“Outch!”
“Hold
still, will you?”
Will sat
behind Jack, the knife in his hand and shortened patiently Jack´s hair to
shoulder length, disentangling the strands. Jack sighed, looked at the braids
and beads in his hands. “What a shame…”
“Shhh… One
day you can let them grow again.”
It took him
a good while, but then Will was satisfied. He brushed back Jack´s hair, sighed.
“You look
gorgeous. Like a Spanish nobleman.”
Jack tried
to use the knife as a mirror.
“Hmmm…
Well…” he grinned. “Not bad…”
Two days
later Will woke up because Jack shook his shoulder gently.
“Will..
Wake up… I have to ask you something…”
Will
stretched, opened his eyes, blinked into the rising sun.
“Hmmm…? Good
morning… You… What?”
Jack
smiled.
“Baby… I
said I have to ask you something. Have you decided if you ever want to be on a
ship again?”
Will stared
at him, confused.
“I... I
don´t know… Jack, I am hardly awake…”
Jack smiled
even wider.
“Decide
now. Or I am afraid we have to leave you here.”
Will
gasped. Sat up, stared at Jack. And then he heard the shouts and hoorays coming
from the beach.
Tbc…
