Colt entered the nurse's office; he visually looked around; then walked over to the desk and grabbed a tissue. "Is she?"
Nurse Drummond nodded. Normally she'd be against visitors, but the patient told her what had happened and why. So she nodded, allowing the visit. "But, be brief; you should be back in class, young man."
Colt offered her a charming smile, that somewhat worked, if an eyeroll with a small smile were anything to go by. He slid over to the resting area a short distance from the desk; but with the lump in his gut, it feels miles away. He parted the curtain just a crack to shove his hand in. He then waved around the swiped tissue, to show the angered patient that he was a fool, and surrenders to any form of punishment.
Geri looked at the makeshift "White Flag", and cocked her head. "Colt?"
"On a scale of: "You got lucky" to "You're fucked, this was your fault", how mad are you?"
"The latter." Replied his girlfriend. "But you defined it wrong." She took his wrist yanking him in enough to expose his face. "I am the latter, but it's: "Why are we surrounded by these idiots; I need to step up my grit", angry."
"Huh?"
"I'm not mad at you. I'm mad at that creep who kicked me." A frown firmly planted, she asked. "I hate to ask, but, how long does the pain last?"
Colt shrugged. "It's been a while," his last time was a basketball; one of his teammates was having fun seeing how high a ball would bounce by the force of his tossing it to the floor. The ball detoured right rather than up, slamming right into Colt's crotch. Worst day of practice EVER. "Unless something happened, usually an hour."
Geri groaned. It has only been ten minutes!
Colt suddenly became aware of the dialogue of the conversation, and changed subjects. Up until now, he'd honestly forgotten about that part of his girlfriend. "Mitchell got suspended. He had to leave today."
"There's a bonus." Rubbing the back of Colt's hand with her thumb, she said with a seriousness. "I was blind-sided. We're gonna show them that this meant nothing. We're a couple; if they don't like it, they can just pick a finger, sit on it, and rotate."
Colt chuckled. "You really wanna go on letting everyone know?" He wondered. "I thought you'd be mad because it was a thoughtless mistake on my part,"
"Sorry, tiger, but I received hatred long before you and I were an announcement; it's a wonder that it hasn't been in this way more often." Her face twisted in pain as she shifted to lie on her side rather than her back but then she turned back over onto her back. No real relief in either position. "Besides, the cause of the fight is probably all over school by now."
"Mr. Douglas, class." The nurse informed.
"Right. Sorry." He looked away from the patient to see if the nurse could see them. "Can I get you anything? A drink, something sweet?"
Geri smiled kindly. "Cheetos would be awesome right now."
"Cheetos? Wouldn't you rather have chips?"
Geri furrowed her brows. "They're the same price."
"Yeah, but if you ask for chips, you'll call them "crisps" - - like a proper English speaker.
"I do not." She crossed her arms in mock offense.
"No need to get upset, my queen, Cheetos it is," he gave her a kiss on the forehead. "Be back in a minute. Time me,"
"Goooo... Now!" She started the timer on her watch.
Colt bolted for the exit, and vending machine.
"Your friend is very kind," the nurse commented.
"Thanks. He's my boyfriend."
"Congratulations. We need more students like him, and less like the nit-wit who did that to you."
"Tell me about it."
Geri hoped not to come across anymore Mitchell Simpsons.
Colt fulfilled the snack request, and bought her an iced tea as well. Soda didn't seem right for the situation. He bid her a speedy recovery then returned to class before he got another detention. How does one do double-detention? You serve your time then add on another hour? As he walked to Science, he wondered if he could take his lock-up time in the morning rather than afternoon. He'd prefer to show up early than stay late.
"Sorry," he said to the teacher, who pointed at the clock when seeing him enter the classroom. "I had to get chewed out." He handed the teacher his note from the principal. "And detention; so, please don't add to it." He put his hands together in prayer.
The Science teacher looked over the note then tossed it, waving for the late student just to take his seat. At least he had showed up. He told Colt the assignment then, resumed silently watching the class work.
'She must be the greatest girl on the planet. I thought we'd be done for sure.' Colt walked through the swarm of other students once the bell released the wild back into the wilderness.
He still felt guilty. This incident was his fault. He should have just let things stay as they were. Secret relationship. Warding off the interested. And just enjoying the privacy. The news of what happened started a spark, the whole forest is on fire with murmurs. Some are giving him looks, others gestures of kindness like a nod or meeting his eye with a look of approval. He was a hero amongst allies and a let down to those who were not. He appreciated those who simply didn't care; existing in a mindset of live-and-let-live, who cares how, if it hurts no one. Those are the real heroes. He didn't want to have to stick up for Geri. Not because he wouldn't, he'd fight a bear for her, but he feels that he shouldn't. He was beginning to understand a lot of new things in life. And it was all due to her.
"Hey!" Hands land on Colt's shoulders. He saw the fan of auburn hair before the smiling face of she whom he'd been distracted by. "I still feel kinda wobbly, but mostly better. "Walking tall." She breathed deep then let it out. Taking his hand, she walked with him, proudly to English class.
"Hi, Colt," a girl giggle; and waved with twinkle-fingers.
Colt snorted. "What's that about?"
"Some girls like nobility. It's very attractive." She looked over her shoulder at the departing girl.
"I think she's interested." He looked over his shoulder; not only was the girl staring, she hit a classroom door that was open. He laughed to himself. "Too bad for them, I'm taken."
"Good. Stay that way." She kissed his cheek. Boldly. Tall.
"I intend to." He kissed her a little more near to the ear.
They chuckled hearing an "Aww" from somewhere in the sea of teens.

"Why are they serving soup with the sandwiches today? It's not cold out." Troy wondered while eyeing said food.
Colt asked. "Then why'd you get it?"
"French Dip." His sandwich plunged into the small bowl of soup. "Mm. Less dry this way."
Geri nudged Colt on his side, then whispered. "Do you know him?"
Colt looked to his left, where sat a stranger at their table. "Must be new," he said to his girlfriend. Turning to the newcomer, he asked. "Are you new?"
The blond teen shook his head. "No. I've been here for years. I'm showing my support."
"By sitting with us?" Geri's brows were at her hairline.
"Well, sure. Name's Archer." He stuck out his elbow; still functioning in virus-prevention-mode.
The table's occupants shook away the invitation.
"Scram." Colt ordered.
"Alright, I get it." He stood. "I'm still an ally, Geri."
"Thanks."
Archer smiled at her then walked away to join back with his usual friends.
"Would it be weird if I ate lunch in the hall beside a locker?" Asked the suddenly too analyzed girl.
"It is unsettling." Amy looked around then stood up.
"Ames, don't."
She held her up to her best friend to block the silencing. "If you've been hearing rumors, just ask. It's better the source clarify the situation than to gossip and more importantly don't stare. You're freaking us out." She sat back down. "See. They're already going on with their usual."
All but two. One dared, and other joined when their friend took up the challenge and moved to carry it out.
"Hey, Larry," he intentionally used a less unisex name. "I was curious, is your di.."
Rocky shoved the guy back into his friend. "Sit back down. You're not funny."
A handful of students laughed at such a declaration. They had expected more, but Rocky came out of nowhere and disappeared in the same; though not as one would Batman away, they could still see him moving to his table with his lunch in hand, but he did Batman away from the situation.
"Who the hell asked you?" The shoved asked. He was suddenly more interested in harassing Rocky rather than Geri and Colt, so he moved over to where the interloper sat.
'Alright, Rock'.' He silently thanked his brother. Imagine that creep about to ask such a question. Were there less decent people born to the world than toxic waste?
Amy tapped her friend's hand. "I'm proud of you going public."
"Don't join in." Geri grimaced. "I'm happy for it, but really, can't it just be seen as nothing unsual?" She shrugged her shoulder. "I am just a girl, going out with a super hawt guy." Geri gasped then said. "This is your fault; you need to lower your hotness level, Douglas."
"You mean elevate it?" He flirted back.
Amy and Troy winced.
"Yuck. Scoot back into the shadows; you're making me sick." Amy groaned.
"Second that." Colt's friend snickered and set down his sandwich. He had to admit it, he hated himself for it, too; but... He was curious as to whether or not Colt has seen it. Is Geri bigger than Colt? It's stupid to wonder; It's completely irrelevant. But, the curiosity is there.
"Geri, let's go out tonight."
"Ok. Where?"
"Well, since I'll probably be grounded for fighting and getting detention; what's say my house's driveway?"
"It's a date."

School had calmed down. Just enough that the couple could get through the day without any further hiccups or injuries. It was almost like any typical day. Especially the collective groan about the multitude of homework assignments given out. What went through teachers' minds?
"The kids seem stressed with the lack of knowledge; let's all pitch in and give homework on the same day. Tee-hee!" Ugh. Teachers are so cruel.
"Loser." Said a random guy, before he shoved Colt up against his locker from behind.
"You can call yourself that without touching me." Colt declared to the fleeing stranger. "Were people always this stupid?" He wondered to himself. "Rocky!" He called out to his brother when spotting him in the crowd.
"What?" He paused, although he looked like he'd rather not pause his pace.
"I need to ask you a huge favor,"
"You're on bathroom duty this weekend, deal with it."
"No. Not that; one,"
"Uh, "one", what happened to a favor?"
"Ok. Stuff? Can you do me a huge solids?"
"Let's here it."
"Take Geri home,"
"I can do that."
"Same deal as before, Prince Charming, no funny business." He ignored his brothers rolled eyes. "And two... I have detention from fighting. Could you maybe smooth things out for me with mom about it?"
Rocky sighed loudly through his nose. "Fine."
"You're the best," he popped him on the chest.
"Of course I am, I'm Prince Charming," he mocked. "Where is she, anyway?"
"Beats me." He pulled his phone from his pocket.
C: Where are you
G: Bathroom.
C: You cool going home with Rocky. Detention.
G: Sure. I'll meet him outside."
C: Love you.
He erased it and, instead, sent a heart emoji. She sent the middle finger with a text.
G: I saw the type bubble. I Lo.. panic heart you, too.
A laugh emoji came up after. Colt smiled; happy that she wasn't weirded-out or upset about that. He slipped his phone into his back pocket. He then told Rocky what she'd said; then made for the detention room.
He drummed his thumbs on the desk; staring out the window with a bored expression. He looked over his shoulder when someone tapped him on the back. He saw a girl smirking at him. He was ready with a good remark when the requisite: What are you in for? Came. Except that wasn't what he heard.
"I heard you're going out with that freaky guy, Geri... What's it like when you touch each other?" She asked, loving that she was able to get this opportunity to do so.
The rumors were that Colt was dating, and when the whom was revealed it was insane to find out. Everyone was pretty sure Jeffrey Douglas was homophobic; and that he was tricked by the man-beast was a laugh riot. It was hard to resist not heckling him.
"He must be a real pro at a hand.."
Colt retrieved his wireless earbuds from his backpack and stuffed them into his ears, decidely drowning out the vomiting fool with some loud Linkin Park; and he paired the verbal concert with doing his homework. It was his saving grace if he wanted to have a date with Geri. He knows he'll be grounded; he also knows it's a school night. Nothing was in his favor. But, doing his assignments might help something.
"Ignore me then, you fag." Spat the obnoxious girl. She would have kicked his seat, but the detention monitor walked in.
"Good afternoon, delinquents."
A girl raised her hand. "I'm not. I'm making up a test I missed."
The monitor rephrased his sentence. "Delinquents, and miss Perez." To which the girl smiled her thanks before continuing the work.

"Rocky,"
"Hmm?"
"I don't remember thanking you, for not telling Colt about me."
Rocky shook his head. "It wasn't something that I should tell him." He added. "I'm glad things worked out. Colt's really changed because of you, even if it's just a little."
"He told me you're bisexual. Did he give you a hard time?"
Rocky shrugged. "We're brothers, the closer we are.. the more bones we try to break," but he smiled. "He said all kinds of stuff; he, like many, don't understand same gender attraction - - especially when the media continually portays gay couples still in the light of F and M. There are thousands of gay couples that are both ridiculously masculine."
Geri nodded. She never really thought about it, but the media does do that.
"And, if it's all right with you, anytime some jerk gives you trouble.. I'd like to defend you, too."
Geri nodded. "I can defend myself, but, I don't mind help when it gets too enclosing."
"I'll keep a respectful distance until I see the Bat-signal."
"Bat-signal? Dork."
"I sure am." Rocky grinned proudly.
"I dork-out over horror games." She confessed. "I always stay on top of the new trailers or rumors." Seeing her house; she un-snapped the belt. "Thanks for the ride. Have a good afternoon."
"You too." He headed for home.
The whole way there he was thinking of how, nevermind why, he had to smooth the bristles he was about to give his mother over Colt's detention sentence. He smiled at the exaggerated scenario of telling his mother, her second son was in jail. His mom would weep, say she knew the day would come, then fix dinner. Why dwell over the troublemaker? Besides, Tum Tum would convince her cooking would ease the sorrow.
"Hi, mom," he said once he walked in and found her in the kitchen.
Rocky washed his hands, then joined her to peel potatoes.
Jessica noticed only one came in; there was no unseen traveler going up the stairs. "Where's your brother? At his girlfriend's?"
"Detention."
Jessica looked weary, but asked. "Should I be more concerned?"
"He was fighting." Her reaction hurried the rest of it out. "Someone, from what I'd heard from others, kicked Geri between the legs. Colt couldn't help it. I would have done the same, had I seen it."
Jessica closed her eyes, then opened them. "Is she ok?"
Rocky shrugged. "She seemed all right on the way home. But, still... It's pretty messed up."
"I agree. Maybe the school needs to have an assembly about abrasive behavior verses abusive." Her peeling stilled. "I don't want anyone getting killed over being themself." It happens far too often. She's seen the news.
"Are you mad at Colt?"
"No. I'm actually kind of proud of him. But I wish he didn't have to do these things."
"Me too."
Maybe the school should hold an assembly? Wake the kids up to their distressing, concerning, and ridiculous behavior. Before someone truly does get hurt beyond repair.
At the Simmons' home. Geri walked over to her mother, joining her on the couch. She wrapped her arms around her, and cried.
