The rest of the night was pretty straightforward.
Since it was slow, Rae continued to grill Jackson on how to do her job. Currently, he was practicing keeping the books. “So, why is it I’m doing this and not Mitch? Isn’t he your partner?” Jackson asked while he worked.
Rae and Jazzy both laughed. “Hey, Mitch!” Rae called into the back room.
“What?!” he shouted, poking his head out.
Rae wrote something down on a napkin and handed it to him. “What’s this say?” she asked.
Mitch scowled and looked at it before rolling his eyes. “Very funny,” he said, returning to the back giving the girls a mock glare. The girls just laughed some more.
Jackson gave them a funny look. “Care to share the joke?” he asked, grabbing some water and taking a sip.
Rae leaned against the bar beside him. “Mitch is dyslexic. So it takes him forever and he tends to make mistakes. So I do it,” she answered.
“Probably why the bar was tanking before Rae came along,” Jazzy added, tossing some empty bottles in the bin. “Mitch refused to admit he couldn’t do it.”
“And Rae changed that how?” Jackson asked, looking up.
Rae grinned sheepishly and Jazzy laughed again. “Rae hid all his sex toys and threatened to burn them,” she said.
Jackson choked on his water. “His what?!” he asked, staring at them.
Rae snorted. “You can’t tell me you haven’t noticed. Mitch is a total sex fiend. He’s got a ton of toys. And not all of them are what most would consider ‘normal.’ I’m always picking the damn things up. With gloves mind you. Unfortunately, I know everything he does with those things.” Rae said with a disgusted face.
“And you know this how?” Jackson asked.
Jazzy scowled. “Mitch likes to brag,” she said before walking off. Rae just shook her head.
“What’s with her?” Jackson inquired as he watched Jazzy storm off.
“Mitch’s sex talks are half the reason those two have been on and off again for the last five years. The other half being that neither seems ready to commit.”
Jackson nodded, watching the dark haired, mocha skinned beauty as she went around the room taking orders. Jazzy didn’t seem to notice, but Rae did, and it took some effort for her not to scowl. Luckily, Mitch got to him first.
Seconds later, Jackson found himself in a headlock. Mitch stood behind him, holding him in place. “You wouldn’t happen to be looking at my woman now would you boy?” Mitch asked, grinning, not that Jackson could see it.
“Uh… little help Rae?” Jackson said, looking over at her.
Rae smiled sweetly. “Nope!” she said, waving cutely and walking away.
“Hey, wait! Rae come back!” Jackson called, trying to squirm free.
Mitch chuckled, “Forget it buddy, you made her jealous, this is her way of getting you back.”
“Jealous? I think you mean mad.” Jackson grumbled, finally giving up. To his relief, Mitch let go.
“No. I mean jealous. The kid likes you. Though the only one who has yet to seem to realize it is you. Normally, I would say she didn’t know it either, but I think it’s more denial with her.” Mitch stated.
Jackson stared at him like he was nuts, though part of him was oddly thrilled at this little insight, though he mentally pushed that aside.
Suddenly, Jackson realized something: Mitch liked to talk. It had always irked Jackson how Rae seemed to know so much about him and was always catching him off guard with it, while he knew practically nothing about her. This was a chance for him to learn a few things and possibly even the score.
Looking around, Jackson caught sight of Rae disappearing into the changing room, probably intending to talk to one of the girls employed as dancers: the perfect opportunity for Jackson to talk with Mitch.
“Why doesn’t Rae celebrate her birthday?” Jackson asked. His question had been casual but direct. He never had been one for beating around the bush.
“A lot of reasons, I suppose,” Mitch replied, drying a glass. “The main reason is probably because birthdays are supposed to be a happy time where you celebrate someone’s birth. But Rae has never had a ‘happy’ birthday; she was always alone as a kid. It’s also the day she watched her first adopted parents die. She usually spends the day down at one of the local parks watching the kids play, you didn’t hear that from me by the way, or if she’s in Japan at the time, visiting their graves. We just give the kid her space.”
Jackson furrowed his brows in thought. “What about boyfriends? Surely, they would try and make the day special for her,”
Mitch looked at him. “You don’t seem to comprehend just how much of a loner Rae is. She’s only ever had one boyfriend before,” he replied.
“What happened to him?” Jackson asked before he could stop himself.
Mitch shifted uncomfortably. “That’s a very touchy subject, boyo. And I would not recommend repeating any of this to Rae got it?” Jackson nodded, recognizing the warning.
Mitch sighed. “’Bout two years ago this kid named Andrey wanted to join Rae’s group. After a few tests, she allowed it. A while later, they started dating. Now it turns out, Andrey is Marius Gaunshtien’s youngest son.”
Mitch paused, taking in Jackson reaction. Jackson was dumbstruck. That was certainly not something he had expected; all he could do was stare at Mitch, his mouth hanging open in disbelief.
Mitch chuckled. “Thought you might react like that. Anyways, Marius didn’t really want his son getting involved in that sort of life. Something to do with his brothers already doing that sort of thing and him wanting Andrey to do something a bit more… legal. Law school, in fact. The kid was smart. I figure the idea was that if he went to law school then when someone in the family got in trouble, they would have someone they could trust to go to and get them out.
“Now, Rae’s not usually one to let someone else tell her how to run things. But as a favor to Marius, she kept Andrey out of trouble. Long story short, somewhere along the line, Marius made a few enemies and Andrey ended up getting shot. He was rushed to the hospital where he stayed in intensive care for a few months and eventually died of complications.
“Poor kid rarely left that room the entire time, and she hates hospitals. She didn’t take it well. Rumor had it that the two had gotten engaged, with his father’s approval, of course.” Mitch reached for another glass and washed it by hand in the small sink behind the bar. “Now, Rae hasn’t killed anyone since that one time when she was a child. But she did play a part in the deaths of the men who killed Andy.”
The use of the nickname caught Jackson’s attention. Apparently, Andrey had been more than just Rae’s boyfriend; it seemed he had also come to be a part of the group Rae and Mitch normally associated with. Jackson watched Mitch as he continued to clean. The bar was pretty much empty at this point.
“She helped lure them out, didn’t she.” he said. It was more of a statement as a question and Mitch simply nodded.
“You’ve heard,” he said.
“I don’t know all the details, obviously,” Jackson replied. “But it was common knowledge that the boss’s youngest was involved with someone. And that the boss not only approved of the girl, but treated her like a daughter. After his son died, we all felt it. Gaunshtien became a lot more violent and cruel then before. Though it was never confirmed, the last rumor about the incident was that the girl had helped by setting up a false meeting. After that, no one heard anything else.”
Mitch nodded. “That’s about the gist of it. Rae distanced herself from Marius’s organization after that, though they still meet from time to time. And there was always the matter of the debt Marius owed her.”
Jackson shifted as things started to fall into place in his mind. “Which she used for me. That’s what she meant when she said he owed her. Why would she waste something like that for someone she doesn’t even know? She could have had anything with a debt like that!”
The question wasn’t really geared towards anyone in particular, but Mitch replied none the less. “Kid’s weird like that. She doesn’t seem to really want anything for herself. And the matter of the debt didn’t really sit well with her anyways. I think she did it for Andy. No one else. All she wanted was justice for his death.”
Before Jackson could respond, he was struck upside the head, spinning around in his seat he saw Rae standing with her hands on her hips looking fairly annoyed. At first he thought she had heard their conversation, but it soon became apparent that she hadn’t.
“Didn’t I already tell you you’re not here to chit-chat?” she demanded. “Get back to work! We’ve still got an hour till closing.” She growled. Mitch laughed as Jackson quickly got up and went to clear some tables.
“And you,” she said, pointing at Mitch. “Don’t encourage him,” she snapped.
Mitch just continued to laugh and resumed cleaning.
Rae had continued to be irritable the rest of the night, and Jackson was getting tired of it. After a quiet ride home, they each grabbed a light snack and went to get cleaned up. Jackson took a quick shower while Rae enjoyed a long bath. Once Rae was done, she slipped on some of her favorite silk PJs.
They had been a gift from Jessica, they were black with red trim around the cuffs of the arms and legs. Grabbing a book, she headed for the living room, intending to spend the rest of the night curled up on the couch reading. What she didn’t expect was for Jackson to be waiting for her outside his bedroom door.
“Where are you going?” he asked, arms folded across his chest as he casually leaned back against the wall.
“To read. Got a problem with that?” she snapped.
“Actually I do,” he replied. “You need to sleep, Rae.”
Rae scowled. “Mind your own business,” she said.
“It is my business. Either you go to bed on your own, or I make you,” Jackson told her, standing up straight.
Rae snorted. “Bite me,” she replied, trying to brush past him.
Before she could get by, Jackson reached down and scooped her up as if she weighed nothing at all.
In her surprise, Rae dropped her book, which bounced harmlessly on the floor. “What the… Jackson! Put me down!” she shouted, trying to struggle.
Jackson just ignored her and went into his room, closing the door behind them. Tossing her on one side of the bed, he climbed into the other, pinning her with one arm before she could get up.
“Go to sleep,” he said.
Rae continued to struggle for a few minutes but he refused to let go, and she was too tired to keep it up for long.
“At least let me get under the blankets,” she pouted.
“Fine. But if you try to leave I’m just going to bring you back in,” he said, lifting his arm.
Rae continued to pout but nodded obediently and crawled under the blankets. After a few seconds of hesitation, she curled against him and Jackson draped his arm over her once more.
“You’re a pain, Jackson Rippner,” she mumbled drowsily, already starting to drift to sleep.
He just chuckled. “Good night Rae.”
Soon, they were both sleeping peacefully.
