Razielslittleflamekaat- Glad you're enjoying the story. No, I never said if B'rasch's little brother was dead or not. You'll have to wait and see about that later. Hope you enjoy this chapter as much as the others.
*** *** *** The rest of the night was like a hazy nightmare for Jack. Nothing had seemed real, but she had known it was. Some things were harder for her to remember than others. She didn’t recall leaving the building or it exploding almost immediately after they had gotten out. What she did remember was them coming across her dying father, somehow shoving her way out of Ashley’s arm and holding the man in her arms until he died. The entire time she had held him, they never said a word to each other, even when Ashley came on the General’s other side and wrapped his arms around both of them. Not even a single tear was shed between the three. Once the man had died, Ashley silently picked up his sister and continued to carry her out of the building, refusing Hamilton’s offer to take her when he was sure Ashley would be tired. The last thing Jack remembered was them finding her mother and Anthony, who had been covered in blood. Ashley had informed Margret of the General’s death, and she had nodded grimly and told them all to get out. She had ordered Anthony to go with them. Then, she had run off on her own, and never came out of the building. Jack knew her mother had been the cause of the explosion, but she didn’t know why. Hearing the General was dead could not have been the cause of it. Even when they were married her parents weren’t that close. The only thing Jack could think of was that it was some kind of protocol or something along those lines. Anthony probably knew, but he wasn’t talking. He never talked. Most of the military personal and the scientist had died in the complex either during the explosion or attack. Those that survived were whisked off and forced to stay with the rebel Arathians. If any were injured, which most were, they received immediate medical attention once they were back at the base. Those that were unharmed were given rooms, clothes, and the option of going the Arathian ranks or returning home. Most of them had wanted to return home until they saw the weapons, the training grounds, and the women. After that, there wasn’t a single one of them that wanted to go home. None of them had families or any ties that weren’t easily severed. The General had purposefully chosen men that could disappear and no one miss them. It had just been easier since they were working on a secret project and all. Currently, Jack sat in a chair getting her blood drawn by Churo for what felt like the millionth time. Apparently, the antidote Churo had made hadn’t cured the poison, but just made it dormant. It was still in her system and depending on how active she was it would come back. They could keep it in check as long as they continued to give her a shot every twenty-four hours on the dot. Churo was attempting to find an actual antidote, but until that happened, Jack had to keep injecting herself like a diabetic. It had only been a week and she was already tired of it. Jack knew Churo was trying her best, but she couldn’t help but feel frustrated that the woman hadn’t found the cure by now. Churo kept explaining that it was going to take time because of how different Jack was from an Arathian. She never knew how Jack’s body was going to react to a particular medicine. Basically, Churo was telling Jack the part of her that was still human was a nuisance and it was holding up the process. After hearing that, Jack implied that Churo didn’t know what she was doing and was just making excuses to cover it up. The pair hadn’t talked to each other since, which was a total of ten minutes. B’rasch was standing next to Jack’s chair studying the two females intently. Though they had been speaking in the Arathian tongue, he knew the two had insulted each other. Now, the females refused to speak to each other. Females on his home world did the same thing. They would insult each other, then not talk to each other, and then they would fight and everything would be fine. Maybe that was what these two needed to do. Then again, maybe not. Looking at the Arathian female it was easy to see she was no fighter. All her features were too delicate, and her muscles weren’t as defined as a fighter’s would be. She was a female of science and nothing else. Jack would easily take her down, and he had a feeling that would only make matters worse. The two would probably sort it out in some non-violent (boring) way. It was Churo that broke the silence first. “Does he have to go everywhere with you?!” There was only one “he” in the room so it was easy to tell who she was speaking of. For the entirety they had been in the room, the yautja male had been studying her every movement and it was starting to get on her nerves. He did it every time he was in the room with them, which was every time Jack was in the room. Giving the circumstances, she could understand him being a little protective of Jack, but constantly following the female around was going a little far. The strange thing was it didn’t seem to bother Jack at all. In fact, it seemed like she enjoyed having the yautja around. “Yes,” Jack replied plainly. She knew B’rasch made Churo uncomfortable, but she wasn’t about to tell the seven foot plus male that he wasn’t allowed in the room with her. Besides, she started to feel uncomfortable when B’rasch wasn’t around. They had been each other’s shadows for a significant amount of time and they had gotten used to it. “Do you have a problem with it?” “No, of course not,” Churo lied. “It’s just that, um, people are starting to talk. They think you two are mated to each other.” The last part was true. Some Arathians were starting to talk about the two being together constantly. They even slept in the same bed with each other. They could come up with no other explanation except the two being a couple. Not being too fond of the yautja race, they considered it quite unsettling. “So. It’s none of their damn business if we are or aren’t.” Though they called themselves peaceful, Arathians were never really tolerant of other races, especially those that were violent. A bunch of hypocrites they were. They were currently fighting each other, but they still thought they were better than every other race in the universe. Churo knew Jack was right. It was no one’s business what she did. And the male did seem to want nothing but Jack’s safety, which was always good. Churo could admit that she liked B’rasch a little bit. He was much different than his brother who did nothing but stalk around the hideout as if he were just waiting for a fight. There was a certain tenderness that B’rasch had, especially toward Jack, that just made him likeable. But there another reason she was standoffish toward the male. “You know,” she started with her back toward Jack, not being able to face the other woman while saying this, “Anro cares for you greatly. More than any female he had come across.” A small almost shy smile appeared on Jack’s face. “Is that why he decided to start sleeping with me and B’rasch every night?” The shock on Churo’s face nearly made Jack burst into laughter. No, she hadn’t been joking. Hamilton had been sneaking in their room to sleep with them for the past four nights. The heat the two males created was stifling, but Jack loved it. She felt so safe with the two on either side of her. Before Churo could respond, Hamilton walked in, Vegas right behind him. The room grew uncomfortably silent. “You were talking about me, weren’t you?” Hamilton asked, glancing between the two women. When they didn’t say anything, he turned to B’rasch and in English asked, “Were they talking about me?” B’rasch shrugged his shoulders. How the hell was he supposed to know what they were talking about, he couldn’t understand them. Jack smiled up at the man that was standing beside her now. “Yes, we were talking about you,” she admitted in English. “Talking about how you sneak into our bed every night.” She nodded toward B’rasch to include him in the conversation. “You have Monro to thank for that one. That man snores so loud I can’t get to sleep at night. I’m shocked you guys don’t hear it from next door.” He wasn’t lying; Monro’s ridiculous snoring was what had driven him to seek rest elsewhere. It being Jack and B’rasch’s room had just been a plus. “I’m sure we’re causing quite the scandal. Two males sleeping in one female’s bed. They must think you’re a slut,” he said ruffling Jack’s hair. “Hmm, no change from my previous stay. Almost every woman swore I was after their man. I really have no idea what put that in their heads. I don’t go for attached men; I have standards.” Then she looked to Hamilton with a suspicious eye. “Why are you here?” “Oh, well, me and Vegas were walking around with nothing else to do. Thought we’d stop by and see how you were doing.” He made a point to look at Vegas and Churo who somehow glanced at everything in the room except each other. Everyone could clearly see there was something happening between the two. Jack thought it was cute, Hamilton encouraged it, but there were a few that didn’t like it. Monro for example, though no one really cared what the human hater felt about it. There was one other that didn’t like what was happening. That someone had had their eye on Churo for a long time, and seemed to have the inability to take no for an answer. Jack wasn’t sure of the male’s name, but she knew that he was going to be trouble in the not so distant future. But she was willing to stick up for her friends especially if that meant fighting for them. Maybe she should go have a talk with the guy. Then again, that was probably a bad idea. It could possibly make matters worse. “Churo, do you need me here?” asked Jack not really wanting to sit in the chair any longer, and wanting to give the pair some alone time. Churo attempted to verbally respond to Jack’s question, but she stuttered so badly she finally settled on just nodding her head. “Alright, just let me know if you find anything.” Using the arms of the chair for support, she stood up and started to head out of the room. “See you around, Vegas.” Was the last thing said before she exited the room. The hall reminded her too much of the complex she had just escaped from. The entire building reminded her of it actually. She hated it. A need to escape this place filled her being, but she was not a prisoner there. Any time that she wanted, Jack could leave the building and never return. But in reality she could not leave. Not until Churo actually found a cure for the poison still in her system and until they got B’rasch’s little brother back. The threat of the Arathian that wanted her dead also kept her in the safety of the building. Once everything was taken care of, she planned on getting out of the place. Of course, she would be getting off of the planet with B’rasch and his family. Hamilton would be coming as well. He said that he didn’t have anything on the planet to keep him on it. Even though his mother was the leader of the rebellion, Arathians still did not except him as one of their own. He had been cast out of their society and it was made clear that most did not want him there, even if he was trying to help at the moment. Jack couldn’t blame the man for wanting to leave. After witnessing the treatment he received, she would want to leave as well. When B’rasch had informed Mar’tak that Jack and Hamilton would be coming with them, he didn’t take the news too well. There had been a bellowing argument that had all too quickly become violent. No matter how badly Jack had wanted to jump in and help, she couldn’t bring herself to intrude. It may have been about her and her friend, but it was a family matter. Private really. She shouldn’t have been there watching in the first place. It had been Hamilton that gently led her out of the ship B’rasch shared with his brother and back to the headquarters of the rebels (after the escape Mar’tak had parked his ship on the front lawn of the building/house). “That went well,” he had said with a nervous smile on his face. Jack just raised an eyebrow at him and then shook her head. Later, B’rasch had come to their room with a triumphant smile on his face saying that everything was settled. It was clear he had won the fight. “You should eat something,” Hamilton pointed out when he realized Jack was not headed in the direction of food. “Churo drew a lot of blood from you.” He tried to steer her toward the mess hall-like room, but to no avail. She just sidestepped him telling him that she wasn’t hungry. From the direction she was going, he could tell she was headed for the lift. “Fine.” Hamilton gave up. Jack was going to do whatever she wanted and there was no point in arguing with her. It would get him nowhere but pissed off. “My mother wants to see us anyway. She’s in the house.” B’rasch stopped and turned around. “Oh no, she wants you there, too.” Even if Selest didn’t, Hamilton would be damned if he was going to be the only male stuck with two females. B’rasch was going to go with him no matter what. B’rasch got a look on his face that could only be described as despondent. There were so many things he would rather be doing that didn’t include talking to Hamilton’s mother. It wasn’t that he disliked the female, quite the opposite actually, she just unnerved him a little bit. At first, he had believed it to be just him, seeing as Jack wasn’t bothered by the woman, but then he talked to his brother and found they shared the same unnerved feeling toward her. They had quickly agreed it was the way the female looked at them. It was as if she were tearing down every fiber of their being to see what makes them, them. Her gaze was very obtrusive. B’rasch would have hated to have her as a mother. There was just no way you could look the female in the eyes and lie to her. The house was located a mile directly above the headquarters the rebel Arathians used. It was their cover for anyone who spotted them leaving. The only way to get to the house was by the lift that Jack and the two males were headed toward, and it was a decent ride. Being slightly dizzy from Chruo’s turn at vampirism, Jack was not looking forward to the ride, but she couldn’t stay underground for much longer. Besides, the room she shared with B’rasch (and now Hamilton) was in the house and she wanted to lie down. Selest had put her room in the house figuring the woman would be tired of sleeping underground. Jack had to admit having a window she could open was the greatest thing she had had for the past few months. A few times she had opened it and left it in that position all night just because she could. With B’rasch and Hamilton near her she didn’t feel any of the cold that poured in. They reached the lift and Hamilton pushed the “up” button. “Who wants to play I spy?” Jack joked. Hamilton gave her an annoyed look and B’rasch a curious one. For the rest of the ride Jack explained the rule of the game. He finally understood that Jack had been joking when they reached the basement of the house. At first, he had not understood why Jack would want to play the game if everything on the lift looked the same. When he finally did get it was a joke, he didn’t find it very humorous. “It’s not funny when I have to explain it,” Jack muttered under her breath when they got off. Hamilton had found the exchange the most entertaining part of the ride. Getting ahead of the rest of the group, Jack found Selest in the kitchen on the first floor, standing at the counter. The kitchen was neat and tidy and looked like the typical American kitchen. It could have been plucked right out of the page of a homemaker’s magazine, and it probably was. The Arathians didn’t know much about human life except from what was printed on page or scoured on the internet. So really, they didn’t know anything at all. Celebrity rumors, “stunt” videos, and blogging never really captured the true nature of the humans. Or maybe they did. Thinking on it, Jack realized how stupid humans must seem to alien races. She was glad she wasn’t going to be a part of that for much longer. “You wanted to see me?” Selest turned around and smiled at Jack, a plate of food in her hands. “Yes, I did. Please, sit.” She indicated toward the table. When Jack sat down, the much older woman set the plate of food in front of her. “You need to replenish your body.” It was the polite way of telling Jack she had to eat the food. When the younger woman didn’t touch the plate she said, “Don’t worry, I didn’t cook it.” Selest knew she wasn’t much of a cook and was not offended by Jack’s actions. Now knowing the woman didn’t cook the food, Jack shoveled it into her mouth, hardly chewing before she swallowed. It had been a while since she had last eaten and she had lied when she had said she wasn’t hungry to Hamilton. She was starving. She had just been more interesting in getting out from under the ground and into something that resembled a homestead. Hamilton didn’t seem hurt when he spotted Jack devouring her plate of food. Just made himself a plate and sat next to eat, eating the food a little more politely than the female. B’rasch just sat, not having a taste for the food presented. Not enough meat (there wasn’t any at all). “So, what did you want to see us about?” inquired Jack as she shoveled another forkful of food in her mouth. Selest smiled that kind smile Jack was used to seeing on the woman’s face. “Nothing really. I just wanted to make sure you ate something.” Hamilton nearly choked on his food. Somehow, he had forgotten how sneaky his mother could be with that kind of stuff. Of course, she had centuries of practice. “You haven’t been eating enough, dear.” Jack rolled her eyes. She had been eating just fine. Hadn’t missed a meal yet. She was just a little skinny from when she was sick. Now, that she was better, her appetite had come back full force. The only reason Selest knew nothing about it was because she hadn’t been eating the food the Arathians provided. None of the humans really had a taste for it so they always sent a few people into the nearby towns to get some. Sure, it wasn’t healthy like the Arathian food, but it was sure a hell of a lot more tasty. If they kept it up, Jack would be back to her normal weight in no time. Probably add a few extra pounds for good measure. “Where’s my brother?” Jacked asked after finishing her food. Changing the subject seemed like a good idea. Selest let her know he was in his room upstairs. “I need to talk to him about something. I’ll be back.” Her clean plate was deposited into the sink before she left the room to find her brother. It wasn’t hard since his room was the first room to the right on the second floor (a measly two rooms away from Jack’s). When she knocked on the door and walked in, Ashley was sitting on the bay window staring out at the scenery. There was a smile on his face she had never witnessed on him before and she had no idea how to describe it. The only thing she could think to do was ask if he was alright. “I’m fine,” he replied, never looking away from the window. “Better than fine, actually. Just perfect.” “I’m not going to lie; it’s making me a little nervous seeing you like this.” “There’s no need to be nervous. Soon, I’m going to be a married man, and a father. Rocky just found out she is pregnant. Well, Selest told her she was. Woman’s like a home pregnancy test. Rocky hadn’t even missed her period yet. Barely three weeks along. Took a few test just to be sure. Definitely pregnant. You’re going to be an aunt, and you won’t even be here. The General isn’t going to be here to see his first grandchild, and neither is Margret. None of my family.” For the first time ever, Jack was seeing her brother cry. Even after he was picked on and beat up, he never shed a tear. Jack had never thought in a million years she would see the little water droplets fall from the man’s eyes, until that day. Seeing his tears made her body produce its own. It took all she had not to let them spill down her cheeks. “Ashley, I-” “Don’t apologize. You have to go. The people that hired us will hunt you down if you stay here. You’re better of getting as far away from this planet as possible.” “I’ll try to come visit as much as possible.” Both of them knew it wouldn’t be often, but she would try to visit them as often as she could. “What are you looking at out there anyways?” “Rocky. She’s out there making snow angels. Tried to talk me into going out there with her. You know how much I love snow.” He hated it with a passion. Didn’t mind the cold though. “Besides, I wanted a little alone time, to think.” “Mind if I sit with you? I’m sort of hiding from Selest.” Ashley let out a short chuckled and gestured for her to sit. Jack thanked him and decided to just lie on the bed. It seemed like the appropriate place. It was far away enough that Ashley had his space, but close enough for him to know that his sister was there if he wanted to talk. She pretty much knew for a fact he wasn’t going to talk to her, but the gesture made her feel better. Didn’t know about him since he wouldn’t say. Down the stairs directly below them were Selest and Hamilton. They were arguing and Jack could hear it as if she were in the room with them. If she closed her eyes, she could picture everything perfectly. She knew it was rude to eavesdrop, but her name had been used, which had caught her attention in the first place. Maybe if it hadn’t been about her, she would have just ignored it, but it was and she couldn’t. Front what she could gather, the argument was about him leaving. Selest wanted him to stay and had decided it was Jack’s fault her was leaving. “Jack is a wonderful person and I love her, but she is not right for you. Please, choose another female and stay with us.” Selest was using a good trick. Pleading instead of yelling. It was just a way to guilt trip her son into staying. Jack had to commend the woman on her efforts, even if they were wasted. Jack could practically feel Hamilton roll his eyes. “I am not choosing another female. Despite what you and everyone else thinks, I’m not going just because of Jack.” Selest scoffed. “Yes,” he began, his tone sharper in response to his mother’s reaction, “Jack plays a huge part in my decision, as does B’rasch, but they are not the only factors.” Selst asked for the other reasons and Hamilton kept his mouth shut, not wanting to share. His mother took it a different way, of course. “See, there is no other reason. It is just her!” She completely ignored her son mentioning the yautja, and when her son didn’t respond, it confirmed her beliefs even more. “She was with Hasinth, you know.” A low blow she knew, but she was prepared to use everything in her arsenal. When Hamilton’s jaw clenched she figured she had won. Silently, he stood up and walked his plate to the sink. “She tried to keep it a secret, but everyone knew. I could always smell him on her.” Hamilton gripped the plate so tight it shattered in his hand. A big piece cut a large gash on his palm and some small shards imbedded themselves there as well. Most of the broken plate went into the sink, but a few little slivers landed on the floor. “Mother,” he said too calmly for what he had just done, “I am through discussing this with you. I am going with Jack and B’rasch and there is nothing you can say that will change my mind.” With that being said, he left the kitchen and headed upstairs, blood flowing freely from his right hand, leaving tiny droplets on the floor for his mother to clean up. As he passed by Ashley’s room, Jack sat up on the bed. She turned to Ashley and asked if he had a first aid kit. He nodded and pointed under the bed. Unlike more people would, Jack didn’t ask him why he kept it under the bed and not in the bathroom (the General had always been insistent that the kit be kept as close to their person as possible). She just retrieved it and left the room to help out Hamilton, who had went to their room two doors down on the left-hand side. He was in the bathroom letting cold water wash over his hand. Jack set the kit on the gray marble counter before taking his hand into her to examine it. Spotting all of the miniscule plate pieces, she got the tweezers out of the box and started to remove them. “I was never with him,” she finally told him getting sick of the silence. One by one she plucked the small splinters out of his hand. A good sized chunk had imbedded itself inside of his gash and it was a bitch to get out; she almost believed she wasn’t going to get it out. “Everyone always thought we were because we were constantly together, but it was never what they thought.” She spayed some disinfectant on the wound and then wrapped it as tenderly as she could. “All I wanted to do was beat him. He thought it was cute, a human female thinking she could beat him, and so he indulged me. We trained almost every night. The rumors started to get back to me, but I didn’t care what they thought. I was going to beat him, even if it killed me trying.” She used medical tape to make sure the bandage didn’t come undone. “One small fact you should know about me is I hate to lose.” He smiled at her then. “I knew that.” Removing his hand from hers, he clenched and unclenched it a few times. “You’re very good at this.” “I grew up in a military home. I’ve been learning how to bandage wounds since I can remember. Even learned some stitching. Can’t sew worth a shit, but I can stitch up just about any wound. Saved a lot on medical bills.” “That’s good.” “Why?” “Because hospitals are so expensive nowadays.” They shared a laugh then. But it was easy to see there was something weighing heavily on Hamilton. Jack was sure it had nothing to do with what his mother had told him about her and Hasinth since she had cleared up that entire mess. Still couldn’t believe Selest would say something like that about her. She knew the woman wanted her child to stay with her, but to say something so untrue and hurtful was just low. Jack wanted to talk to Selest about it, but it would be awkward letting the woman know she had been eavesdropping on the conversation. Abruptly, Hamilton stopped laughing. “How can I tell her?” he asked so quietly Jack wasn’t sure she had heard him right. “How can I tell my own mother the reason why I want to leave is because of her?” Oh, yeah, Jack had no idea. That seemed like a little too touchy of a subject for her. Way beyond her expertise. “I hate her for what she did to me.” She was going to regret it, but she asked anyways. “What did she do to you?” “She gave birth to me. Gave birth to me knowing that her people would never accept me, that they would even hate me. The first words I remember hearing were abomination and half-breed.” There were other names that he would rather not repeat. “I mean, my own brother finds me appalling. Never wanted to be seen with me in public. He could barely look at me without getting disgusted, still can’t. And she never did anything about it. Never told them to shut up, never told them they were wrong. Just ignored it like it wasn’t happening. The only time she ever defended me was when they were banishing me for being too violent. “And now, I find two people that accept me for who I am, even like it, and she wants me to give that up to stay where I’m obviously not wanted. I can’t do that. I won’t. I won’t give you and B’rasch up just to make her happy. If I did that, I would be miserable. Don’t I deserve to be happy finally?” He looked at Jack then, expecting an answer. She couldn’t think of anything to say except, “I don’t want you to stay. I want you to go with, so does B’rasch. And if your mother bothers you about it again, you just have her come talk to me, I’ll set her straight.” She rested her forehead against his. “Please, don’t make me go to the land of the freakishly tall by myself.” “Never.” Before Jack could say anything else, a loud roar echoed throughout the house. Both her and Hamilton recognized it as B’rasch’s. Jack sighed. “Sounds like we’re about to get ourselves into a fight. Come on.”While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
