A Different Approach
Jack was pushed into Lord Beckett’s office and the doors slammed shut behind him. Captain Sparrow looked a bit insulted having been manhandled in such a way and rubbed his sore wrists from where he had been shackled.
“Fine hospitality you keep around here, I must say.” He said fliply as he looked around the office and started to make himself right at home looking through things on the desks, tables and anything else around the room he could lay his hands on.
“I would think that it would have been in your best interest not to get yourself captured by my men yet again Jack, yet here you are. A prisoner of the East India Trading company, bound, shackled, under guard.” Beckett turned and crossed his arms over his chest. “And completely at my mercy if I wish it. A simple word from me and your head could be decorating one of the walls of the fort as a warning to all others who would ever want to engage in piracy and go against my wishes.”
“Now really, Lord Beckett. Where’s the fun in that?” Sparrow said as he moved on to the next box and opened it poking through the contents wondering what he would find inside that he might decide to slip into his pocket.
“I want to know what your relationship is to the young woman who visited your cell the other day. How you know her, and when you knew her.” He asked bluntly cutting through all the red tape and silly blather.
“Clever little minx isn’t she?” Jack grinned as he turned walking past Beckett to the large black desk opening the lid, “I’ll bet she sends you pulling your hair out at times, giving you a run for your money too. Stubborn to the bone that one, smart as a whip. Her tongue could clip a hedge on occasion too.”
Beckett was hardly amused yet kept his calm demeanor and persisted with his questioning. “And just how would you know that.”
“Just full of questions about her aren’t you.” Jack asked as he closed the lid of the desk, “Well let me ask you one.” He turned and looked Beckett square in the eye, “How is it that a young lady like her, came by being with child . . . your child, yet has no wedding band on her finger? I’d think you of all men would be anxious to see that she was properly wed before giving birth to your offspring.”
Beckett’s eye twitched slightly, “She told you of that did she.” He said looking Sparrow in the eye. “You must be very close, you and she for her to divulge such intimate details of private matters on a first time meeting. A bond of a sibling? Perhaps?”
Jack looked at Beckett and smiled, “Going to shout that from the rooftops are you? Your very own decree will put us in the line to the gallows.” Beckett found himself in a somewhat uncomfortable position, not wanting anyone to know of Bonnie’s hereditary history. “Without representation, without rites, and being therefore guilty without any chance of being proven innocent. Although technically, I’m not, therefore she’s not, and . . . you’re not. Although I think the only one out of the group deserving of the loving caress of that rope is you.”
“You don’t want her to die anymore then I do. So you’ll not say a word of this out loud again to anyone not even to yourself.” Beckett said in a low tone.
“Well now here is the problem with that, my dear Lord Beckett. She wants me to.” Cutler turned and starred at Jack. “If I am to die anyway, she insists that she go with me this time. Considering her situation, I can’t say that leaving her behind would be very kind under the circumstances. Death would be more of a mercy and less of a cruelty. She’s absolutely miserable.” Jack walked over and picked up a bottle of spirits then another turning it about looking at the color wondering if one might be rum, but he doubted it. “She wants it known that she is indeed my little sister, and that I am in fact her brother, believed to have died several years ago but truthfully a misunderstood miscommunication.”
“Not even you would be so low as to send an impregnated woman to the gallows, Jack.” Beckett said feeling ill knowing really it was him that had made it possible to begin with. “It’s entirely beyond your measure of indecency.”
“But not yours.” Sparrow said as he turned around looking at Beckett. “How many have you sent to the gallows these past months with these “temporary stays of rites” that you have imposed my dear Lord Beckett.”
Beckett looked away finding that he was between a rock and a hard place, and completely up against the wall. “What is it you want Sparrow.” He demanded.
“Our freedom.” Sparrow said without hesitation.
Beckett turned around not certain what he was talking about. “our?” he repeated wanting clarification. Obviously Jack’s freedom was going to be a given in whatever deal was made.
“You send Bonnie off with me, and you won’t have to worry about anyone finding out who she is or who she’s related to. Then you’re safe and you’ve gained your own freedom. I take her off your hands, free of charge, and all is done with.”
“You can’t be serious.” Beckett said starring at Jack as if he assumed that he was joking with him. “Why on earth would I send her with you? The woman is carrying my child.”
“Because if you don’t . . . I promise that you’ll never rest easy again. Every time you shut your eyes, you’ll wonder if that’s the night your throat will be cut for taking my sister against her will and making your bed her prison.” Beckett’s smile faded as he looked into Jack’s eyes. He’d never seen Jack Sparrow so serious in his life, and it was doubtful that anyone else had either.
“And are you really so set on leaving her child fatherless. If you take her away from here, how do you intend that she and the baby are cared for, Jack. At least here you know that they will both have everything they will ever need and be well looked after.”
“After we’re gone, I don’t intend that you shall ever have to give it another thought. Seeing as how she and I are family I can assure you that she will be provided for along with her child and you needn’t worry about that. As it was never yours to worry about in the first place. However if you insist on keeping us prisoner, then I can assure you that you shall have volumes to worry about.”
“I could silence you, you know. Keep you from talking. It needn’t be a public execution.” Beckett said.
“Ah, but then what would keep Bonnie silent? Unless you intend to kill her, which isn’t what you want either. Otherwise you would have done that long ago. Which you may still do if you tire of her, it’s not unheard of with the likes of you. I know you to well.”
“If I can’t keep her and the baby either way then what’s to stop me from just executing you both. At least that way you’ll be silenced from my ever having had anything to do with either of you. It’s better business to tie up loose ends.” Beckett had a grim look on his face at this prospect.
Jack grinned, “Don’t forget whose sister she is Lord Beckett. You might have had me under lock and key all this time, but she’s been out and about with a decent amount of freedom. She’s had plenty of time to put little securities in place that will turn over in the event of our sudden deaths. Rendering you a pirate sympathizer and conspirator. Wouldn’t that be messy.”
Beckett’s eyes moved towards Sparrow who just smiled at him.
Under Cover of Darkness
Jack stood with Bonnie as they sailed out of port Royal watching the shore disappear in the distance and eventually into the fog. Bonnie felt strange, she hadn’t been away from the island in so long, she didn’t know anywhere else. “Come on darlin’. It’s cold here. Best go below where it’s warmer.” Jack said encouraging her to go downstairs.
Bonnie nodded a little as Jack wrapped a blanket around her shoulders and sent her below. Making her way to the Cabin she was given she slipped inside and lay down keeping the blanket wrapped around her still feeling quite nervous. It all seemed to easy. Something made her feel on edge about the whole affair. Beckett was far to possessive. Far to obsessed with her thus far to have simply given her custody over to her brother and sent them off with a pat and a wave. Something didn’t seem right.
Of course, Sparrow had already broken their agreement. He and Bonnie weren’t due to leave until the end of the week, but he wasn’t about to have Beckett plan out every step of their journey and know when they left, how they left, and who they left with. No, he chose their own time and was bartering passage himself. He had already made plans of his own and was going to make sure they were good and lost from Beckett’s sight before the end of the week was out.
Difficult Discussions
Bonnie sat quietly with Jack whilst they ate a modest meal together. They hadn’t really spoken at great length since they had left port royal about anything, but Jack thought that perhaps she was still feeling a bit strange about everything that had happened to her and didn’t press the issue to much.
“So tell me about this husband of yours.” He said at last breaking the silence between them. “The one that Beckett saw fit to run off and take the place of once it was found out you were with child. Is he a good man?” He questioned.
Bonnie looked into her cup a moment before slowly setting it down. “Yes. He was a very kind and generous man. Perhaps . . . perhaps not as street savvy as many are, but very protective and good. He always tried to do what was right, and what was decent.”
“He took good care of you then did he?” Jack said taking a drink of his rum. Bonnie nodded.
“The best care in the world when he could. When Beckett wasn’t doing his absolute worst to keep us apart.” She said feeling all the horrible shame of selling her soul to the devil, Beckett, for what little mercies they were given.
Sparrow watched the expression on her face and could see that she was heartbroken over the affair still. She had told him that it was somewhat of an arranged marriage. Of course the arrangement was made between her and the husband but it was the same principle. “You loved him. Didn’t you.”
She was quiet for a moment before she nodded a little. “I did.” She sighed softly. “But, Beckett said that our marriage should have never been in the first place. So he had it dissolved and sent him away. I never even got to speak to him, about the baby once it was made known that I was with Lord Beckett’s child. It might not have been such a burden to leave me behind.”
“I doubt that very much.” Sparrow said. “Who was this man? Obviously someone who worked for Beckett if he was able to send him off to sea leaving you behind and keep him working so you were home by yourself. What was his name?” Jack asked taking a deep drink of his rum.
Bonnie’s eyes went wide when he asked this. She didn’t want to say. She knew for a fact that Jack Sparrow had a history with James Norrington. James spoke of Jack often and not in a pleasant way. He blamed him for a great many things, including losing his original commission as Commodore and of course James actually served on Jack’s ship “the Black Pearl” for a short time which was excruciatingly humiliating for him. Who knew that all this time Jack Sparrow was really her lost brother Johnny who had simply changed his name. Jack put down his bottle and took another bite of his supper. “Well? He had a name
didn’t he?”
“Yes.” Bonnie said nervously. She wasn’t certain what to do, and was having the hardest time deciding. Should she tell him, or should she make up some story and some name that he wasn’t familiar with to satisfy him. But what if they crossed paths with James on their way? That would only make things more difficult and more complicated.
Sparrow waited another moment and then arched a brow, “Bonnie? What was his name darling?” He asked again wondering why she didn’t answer right away.
Finally she decided that she should just get it out now and reap the consequences. Perhaps Jack hated the Admiral as much as James seemed to loath him, but she would soon find out. She closed her eyes, “Admiral James Norrington.” She said holding her breath with her eyes tight shut. However, instead of being confronted with sounds of anger and horror, she found she heard an amused chuckle instead.
Opening her eyes she looked at Jack to find he found it quite amusing and humorous indeed. “Well, old Norrie finally landed himself a wife did he?” He said taking a drink of rum. “I have to admit that you are a much better choice than the first he had his eye on. Lizzy probably still to this day does not know what she wants.” He started to laugh a bit more, “Oh Lord if he only knew that Captain Jack Sparrow was his Brother-in-law. I don’t know who he’d shoot first, me or himself.”
Bonnie was a bit confused. “You . . . you don’t seem angry.” She said looking at him. “I thought you would be furious with me.”
Jack looked at her a bit strangely, “What a silly thing to imagine Bonnie, why on earth would I be angry at you? You’re a beautiful young woman who managed to make yourself a fine match and marry a wealthy man. I must say you’ve done quite well in my absence.” He paused and sighed a bit seeming to become more serious for the moment. “I would have come back for you Bonnie.” He said looking at her. “I wanted to, but . . . what I was doing was dangerous. I honestly thought you would be better off there. Even if it was on your own.” He looked back to his bottle. “Pirating isn’t any sort of life for a young lady.”
“It wouldn’t have mattered to me.” She said looking at him. “I just wanted to be with you John . . . Jack. You were my life, my whole world. I wish you would have at least sent me word that you were alive.” She said sadly.
“I thought they would have told you that I escaped. I had no idea that they would insist on letting you believe I was dead darling. I promise that I would have sent word if I had known.” Reaching out he took her hand. “And I would have never . . . ever let what has happened befallen you . . . and I take all the responsibility. If I had done an older brothers duty and looked after you properly . . . Lord Beckett would have never gotten his filthy hands on you.”
Bonnie closed her eyes, “Please Jack . . . I don’t wish to speak of him.” She said softly. Jack nodded a bit. Bonnie stood from her seat and picked up her blanket wrapping it around her. “Goodnight Jack.” She said softly.
“Sleep well Lass.” He said watching her leave and close the door behind her.
Angry Meetings
“Disappear.” Beckett said looking at Mercer. “People don’t just vanish and disappear.”
“Sparrow isn’t the fool we hoped he was, Sir. He started jumping ships almost as soon as he left port. He could be anywhere by now. He’s made at least three jumps in the past week we know of. Covering his tracks so he can take his sister into hiding no doubt.”
“He has some sort of plan, some sort of destination. He can’t simply keep moving from ship to ship. He must be looking for one in particular to take him to that destination. We have to find out where they are going.”
“He has a bad habit of making things up as he goes along sir, it’s quite possible that he’s doing that now. He might not know where he’s taking her and hasn’t decided upon it yet.”
“I don’t care. I want them found, and I want them kept a close eye on.” Beckett slammed his book closed. “She shall not give birth to my child without my witnessing the event, and she shall surely not keep my offspring from me. Neither of them shall.”
Just then James came in with his hands clasped behind his back a grim look on his face. Beckett looked up at him arching a brow. Norrington sighed, “You summoned me, Lord Beckett.”
“I suppose that you’ve already been given news of your ex’s family ties and her departure from these shores Admiral.” He said coldly with a dark look in his eyes.
“What family ties are you talking about exactly, Lord Beckett. Her brother was killed some years ago when the prisons were over crowded. She has no other family that I’m aware of.” James said not really wanting to speak to him at all about Bonnie as though giving him information that may aid him with her in some way.
“Ah, so news hasn’t reached you yet.” Beckett stood from his desk and walked around closer to the Admiral, “Her brother is not dead Admiral Norrington, he simply escaped the prison and she was never told of his slipping through the guards fingers. Although he has been quite famous these many years, and we have all known him quite well, she did not realize it was her brother simply because he changed his name.” Beckett leaned against his desk. “To Captain Jack Sparrow.”
Norrington stared at Cutler Beckett for several silent moments as if he had just stopped time itself absorbing the information that he had just been smacked across the face with. Jack Sparrow of all people. She was the sister of his archrival and nemeses? The man who ruined his life that he had to fight tooth and nail to get back? It wasn’t possible. It simply couldn’t be possible. There had to be some sort of mistake or misunderstanding. “That can’t be right. He’s lied to you.”
“They’ve both lied? The prison records have lied? The secret conversations and the fearfulness of being found out that they were in fact related was all a fantastic lie? No, unlike the little play you and she put on for me the first night the two of you met, this was quite genuine Admiral Norrington. They are indeed brother and sister.”
“She couldn’t have known.” James instantly insisted. “That makes her an innocent. She thought her brother was dead, you can’t accuse her of piracy. At most you can only add the crime of kidnapping to Jack Sparrows charges.”
“Except that she went with him willingly and hardly put up a fight. She was eager to leave with him and take part in whatever actions that he is involved in from now on and there is nothing that proves otherwise. There is nothing that can say she is anything but a pirate now herself.”
James frowned as he clinched his jaw starring at Beckett, “Of course she didn’t want to stay here. Was there anything to stay here for? After you had me agree to terminate our marriage, did you even imagine to do the decent thing and marry her yourself?” He demanded to know.
“I don’t think that’s any concern of yours admiral.” Beckett said in a low tone.
“I think it’s a very good point of issue now Lord Beckett. You wanted her so desperately not to be married to me anymore, but you weren’t going to marry her and she was going to have a child out of wedlock wasn’t she?” He narrowed his eyes. “Was it yet another form of punishment for her choosing me over you, or did you ever have the intention of making her a proper wife?”
“You’re out of line Admiral. I suggest that you watch your steps carefully. Your already treading on extremely shaky ground.” Cutler said his eye twitching slightly. Apparently James had managed to hit the nail squarely on the head and it only angered Beckett that much more.
James wanted to fight this man. He wanted to whittle him down to nothing with his sword and burn the remains. For everything that he had done, for the humiliation and pain that he had caused that seemed to unnecessary to begin with. Beckett was nothing more than a spoiled brat who was given far too much power.
“I want them found, and I want her and the child brought back. The baby is, after all, mine.”
Nightmares
Bonnie tossed and turned in her hammock until finally she sat up her eyes wide open. She took deep breaths covering her face with her hands shaking her head, somewhat tormented by her dreams. It wasn’t the first night she’d been awoken by them. Looking over she saw Jack laying in his hammock with his arm wrapped around his rum bottle an d his hat pulled down over his face sleeping soundly.
With a sigh, she rolled out of her bed and stood up taking her jacket and putting her arms through it so she wouldn’t be cold before opening the door and slipping out quietly closing it behind her.
Going out on deck she walked slowly in the moonlight listening to the sound of the waves lapping against the wooden haul of the ship. She felt chills go up her spine and wrapped her arms around herself. She found herself missing James, but then berating herself for the thought when she felt the swell of her stomach below her arms. If only she hadn’t lost their baby, perhaps none of this would have come about. Perhaps Beckett would have kept himself in check and in somewhat of a gentlemen’s behavior had she become a mother then instead of later.
