Chapter 11 – Compromise

Oria watched as two thirds of the crew clambered into the Pearl’s longboats and the other third set about making the ship ready to sail again. She scowled at Jack, “You’re saying that the Pearl is going to circle us to ensure that no one sneaks up on us?” Jack nodded with a grin and wrapped an arm about her waist.

“Don’t want to be ambushed with our hands full of gems do we?” Oria shook her head faintly and kissed him, he responded with a grin before stepping away. He motioned for her to follow him and she did without question down the side of the ship and into one of the longboats. Her eyes watching Jack out of the corner suspiciously. When they were full the small army of longboats began the short journey over to the island swiftly.

The boats ground onto the sand cutting deep gouges out of the thin layer of sand and stones. They creaked quietly as their occupants poured out onto the beach before being pulled back to the Pearl via ropes. Oria watched as the boats were retracted and glanced back at Jack but he had already disappeared into the caves. Oria followed swiftly and paused as they once more stood inside the dimly lit cavern glinting with the stolen gold and jewels of ages gone.

Oria glanced around suspiciously and caught the glint of Maccus’ eyes down one of the naturally crafted stone corridors. He pointed to the second corridor and Oria peered down it curiously before shouting for Jack. He was by her side in an instant a hand grasping her arm protectively as he gazed down the corridor, “Sara!” Oria shouted the name and the girl blinked and turned to look at her.

Jack stared at the girl, her face was tear-stained and her hair matted, the dress she was wearing torn in places and filthy. Oria rushed forwards and tugged at the chains holding the girl in place by her wrists. It was futile, the locks were old and the chains solid as diamond. Sara tugged her sleeve, “You have to go, they’re going to…” Her eyes widened slightly at something behind Oria.

Jack turned swiftly drawing his cutlass in one movement as a crustacean charged him. He dodged the first blow and ran around the second drawing the creature away from Oria and Sara. Oria turned her attention back to the girl and drew her pistol, “Shield your eyes.” Sara turned away pressing her hands over her eyes as Oria shot at the chain. It still didn’t give and a voice whispered out from the darkness.

“You know that’ll do no good. They were made to hold you so no pistol or tugging will destroy them.” Oria stared at Maccus.

“She’s just a child.” He held a key in his hand and chuckled as her eyes followed it’s slow rocking.

“You have to decide which one you want… not that there’s any guarantee of their survival. Who will it be Sara or Jack?” Oria stared at him and shook her head, she turned away and headed straight for the assigned alley. She shouted for everyone to leave and she didn’t pause to watch which way the sailors went. Drawing her pistol she shot at a trail of gunpowder and watched as the spark trailed into the darkness, setting the timer for her trap.

Turning on her heel she hoped the three minutes she had created would be long enough to get both Jack and Sara out. She froze and spun as the ground vibrated and screams and explosions echoed up from down the different alleys. Oria turned to Maccus and he laughed, “We knew your plot Oria, you have one minute if that to get out alive. No time to rescue them both.” She shook her head in disbelief and headed for the alley with Sara in, Jack was a man, he could fend for himself as long as he followed her plan.

She knelt in front of Sara as she screamed in terror as the explosions travelled quickly towards them. Grasping her shoulders Oria dragged her backwards till the chains on her wrists were pulled taunt. She leapt in surprise as she was dragged away from the girl and spun to face a snarling Maccus. He drew his cutlass and sank it into her side; she grasped his arms tightly as the pain tore through her entire being. He withdrew the cutlass swiftly, “Davy Jones wants words with you when he comes to claim Jack’s soul, it’s only a couple of months away Oria.” He pushed her backwards watching her stumble onto her knees and disappeared back to the ocean with a snarl. Clasping a hand to her wound she scrambled back onto her feet as the earth beneath her feet rose and fell violently as the explosions rocked the unstable island to the core.

Hands grasped her from behind and dragged Oria away, she glanced over her shoulder her vision going blurry. Jack glanced to where Sara had been and fought back the shout of despair but there was nothing to be done, the whole island was aflame. Oria struggled against him and he turned her to face him, “Sara’s dead.” He shouted desperate to get it through so they could escape. She nodded after a few seconds knowing he spoke the truth and accepted his help as he dragged her down the one clear path, the one she had deliberately kept void of explosions and told him to enter and exit by.

Jack glanced back at the raging inferno and dragged her at a quicker pace to the sea. He glanced out but the Pearl must have been circling a different part of the island as it was no where in sight. The ground beneath them lurched suddenly and the sea rose up to meet them as the island began to sink.

“Jack we need to go into the ocean and swim as far away as possible. We’ll get sucked down with the island otherwise.” He nodded and waded into the ocean one arm still locked about Oria as her vision failed completely and she followed blindly as her body fought to keep her conscious by compromising her sight. Several minutes later she lost the fight and slipped into a cold sleep.
