Chapter 12

Welcome to Ibonekoen's Smorgasbord

The classes are half-empty the next day at school: everyone’s getting ready for the dance! Casey makes me go though: a one-two punch of ‘we can’t miss school’ and ‘you could wear a track suit and look better than any other girl there.’ The boy is good.

Not that there’s a whole lot happening at school. Most of the teachers realize we’re too busy thinking about the dance to even remotely concentrate on school work.

So we’re in science class, Mr. Furlong isn’t even bothering to teach. I’m sitting in the desk in front of Casey’s, turned around to face him. My fingers are entwined with his and I’m grinning at him.

“Still think we couldn’t have mi sch school?” I ask.

“Yes.” he says with a grin. “Because this way I get to look at you all day. Hey, check out colleges around Yale and Princeton too if you’re serious about that. I did some research, and they actually have better undergrad programs right now. Did I tell you you’re beautiful today? Because you’re beautiful.”

“I think you’ve mentioned it once or twice,” I say, grinning, “but feel free to tell me as much as you like.”

I lean over, kissing him softly. Then I blus I s I hear Mr. Furlong clear his throat pointedly.

“And yes, I’m still serious about moving in with you when we go to college.” I say as I pull back. “I’m counting the days.”

“You keep getting me in trouble.” Casey says with a grin.

“Like you’re not enjoying every minute of it.” I tease, winking at him. “So. . .any hints about what I can expect tonight?”

He scrunches up his nose and shakes his head, grinning.

“It’s a surprise.” he insists. “Okay, one hint. I’ll probably get grounded for not coming home tonight.”

“Ooooooh.” I say, looking intrigued. “Whoa, Casey, I think hanging around Zeke and me has rubbed off on you.”

I squeeze his hand, winking. “I like it.”

“Actually, I think it’s just. . .” he begins, then motions me closer so he can whisper in my ear. “I want you so bad it hurts.”

I grin, blushing a little. “I think Zeke calls that ‘blue balls’,” I whisper back.

Oooh, tonight is going to be awesome.

I frown slightly. “Are you sure you’re okay for tonight?”

He nods.

“It’ll probably hurt a little.” he admits. “But payback for the first time, right?”

Whoa! That was kind of dirty! Um. . .is it warm in here?

“God, Casey, I love you so much.” I say, grinning at him. “I can’t wait.”

I’m getting all tingly just thinking about it.

I grin, nodding. “I’ll be ready.”

I reach out, caressing his cheek. “This is going to be a night to remember, my love.”

“I hope so.” he says with a grin, right before Mr. Furlong ruins the moment. Oh well, on to the dance!

******

It’s almost time for Casey and Zeke to pick me up and I keep fidgeting over my dress and hair.

“Are you sure I look okay, Mom?” I ask for what seems the hundredth time. I just want everything to be perfect for Casey.

I check my reflection in the full-length mirror at the end of the hallway, adjusting my dress again. Maybe I shouldn’t have bought strapless. . .I feel like I’m going to fall out at any second.

“Yes, I’m sure.” Mom responds, smirking. “When should I expect you back home?”

“Mmm, I don’t know.” I say, biting my lip. “Zeke, Casey and I are probably going to hang out at Zeke’s house after the dance. I’ll call you when we get there so you know I’m okay.”

I glance at my mom, wondering if she even remotely suspects what Casey and I are planning to do.

Judging by her expression, she does.

“Want to try that again?” she prompts.

Damn it. Okay, so it looks like Casey isn’t the only one that will get grounded for not coming home tonight. . .

“Um. . .one thirty?” I say, giving her my best puppy dog look.

“Morgana, is there something you’re not telling me?”

Damn it, my mom’s smart.

“What makes you think that, Mom?” I ask, trying my best to look bewildered.

“Joanne Connor called me today.” my mom says. Whoops.

“Oh.” I sigh. Okay, so it looks like I don’t really have much choice in the matter, does it? I’m sure Mrs. Connor told my mom all kinds of stories about how I’d corrupted her baby boy.

“Okay, so I guess you’re wondering just what’s going on between me and Casey, right?” I ask.

“I’m wondering why you didn’t tell me.” she admits. “I think it’s pretty obvious what’s going on.”

I blush. Yeah, okay, she is right about that.

“I wasn’t sure how you’d react.” I admit. “But we use protection, so you don’t have to worry about that. And we’re really only had sex sex once.”

My mom licks her lips and nods.

“He’s a good kid.” she says. “But you guys have been friends for years. What suddenly changed? Or did something just happen with you looking after him? God his mother is an absolute lunatic.”

I blush brightly. “Um, actually, it happened before he got hurt. I finally told him how I’d loved him since third grade and he told me he’d loved me forever and we hooked up.”

I grin, telling Mom about his declaration of love in the quad. I debate whether or not to tell her that our first time was on Zeke’s couch. I don’t want her to forbid me from going over there anymore. . .

“That’s why he got beat up, Mom.” I say. “Delilah was so pissed off that he’d chosen me over her. I should’ve just waited. I knew she’d lose interest eventually and break up with him.”

Mom’s smiling a little, ing ing her head.

“He actually did that?” she asks, looking impressed. “He’s usually so shy. Morgana, I wish you’d told me. I would have understood. I mean, okay, I’m kind of torn between being a good parent and being a cool parent right now, but if you guys are being smart about it. . . he actually stood on a table?”

I laugh, grinning. “Oh yeah. Right in front of practically the whole school. It was so romantic.”

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you, Mom.” I say.

So is my mom really okay with the whole sex thing? I take a deep breath. “Casey has something special planned for tonight. That’s why I was being evasive about when I’m coming home.”

“Morgana, you know I don’t like it when you lie to me.” Mom says. “But I appreciate you eventually being honest.”

She takes a deep breath, runs her hand through her hair, then hugs me.

“You know I worry.” she says softly. “You should make an appointment with the doctor. See about extra birth control. Other than that. . .”

She takes another deep breath.

“You’re happy, right? You’re okay?”

I grin. “Are you kidding? I’m more than happy. I’m ecstatic! I really love Casey, Mom. I think he’s the one.”

I blush. “We’re talking about moving in together after high school.”

Mom smiles.

“You’vt tit time to decide about that.” she insists. “If you’re happy, then I’m happy. Just be safe. How’s Zeke handling it? He’s always been really protective of you.”

I chuckle. “Zeke was the one who pushed me to tell Casey how I feel about him.” I say. “He’s very cool about the whole thing. He likes Casey.”

I glance at the clock on the wall anxiously. Speaking of the guys. . .didn’t they say they were going to pick me up at a quarter to seven?

As if on cue, I hear screeching tires outside. A few moments later, I can hear Casey and Zeke bickering as they come towards the door. Mom laughs, shaking her head.

“Cute.” she determines. “Do you want to get the door, or should I?”

“I’ll get it.” I say, grinning. I start toward the door and then pause, glancing at her and narrowing my eyes playfully. “Now, you’re not going to do anything embarrassing, like try to take a million pictures like you did last year when Zeke took me to the prom, are you?”

“Just half-a-million.” Mom promises with a grin, then goes to get the camera as the doorbell rings.

I laugh as I head to the door. I pause with my hand on the doorknob and adjust my bodice again. Man, I can’t wait to see the look on Casey’s face.

I open the door wide and grin at Casey and Zeke. “Hi guys.”

“Whoa! Looking good!” Zeke exclaims. Casey’s just staring. His eyes giant. Perfect.

“W-wow.” he manages to stammer.

I smile brightly. Yes! Score!

“Thank you.” I say. “You guys look good too.”

Eh, I’ve seen Zeke in a suit and tie before. He just kind of looks weird. Out of place.

But Casey. . .wow. He looks sharp. Yum.

“Come in, guys.” I say, moving out of the doorway and motioning into the house. “Mom went to get her camera.”

“Have you said anything to her yet?” Casey asks me softly. “About, you know, us?”

“Actually, yeah. Just a few minutes ago. Your mom called her today.” I respond softly. “She wishes I’d told her sooner, but as long as we’re smart t itt it, she’s okay with it. Told me to see the doctor and get extra birth control.”

I wink at him, squeezing his hand.

He blushes and swallows audibly.

“You sure she’s okay with it?”

“Hiiiii Casey!” Mom exclaims as she reappears with her camera, an officially shit-eating grin on her face.

“Hi M-Mrs. um. . . hi.” Casey stammers, immediately nervous.

“Hey Mom.” Zeke says, waving.

I frown slightly at Mom. Not funny. She’s freaking out my Casey.

“She’s fine with it, babe.” I whisper in his ear, squeezing his hand reassuringly. “Just relax.”

“What?” Mom asks. “He looks great! You all look. . .oh Zeke. A leather tie? Really.”

“See!” Casey insists, shoving Zeke a little. “Loser!”

Zeke laughs.

I snicker at Zeke. “Love the tie, bro. It really makes the outfit.” I give him a thumbs up, grinning.

I glance at Mom. “I told Casey that you know, Mom.” I say. “He doesn’t believe me that you’re fine with it.”

And yeah, I suppose if I were in Casey’s shoes, I’d be nervous too. Knowing that a mother knows you’re banging her daughter? Yeah. . .nervous for sure.

“So where do you want us for pictures, Mom?” I ask, glancing around our living room.

There’s a couch against one wall, a coffee table in front of the couch with a couple of art books arranged decoratively. There’s also a couple of reclining chairs and a big brick hearth on another wall. I love that fireplace. There’s nothing better than curling up in front of it in the wintertime with a good book.

Casey’s bright red at this point, especially when Mom hugs him.

“Maybe stand in front of the fireplace?” she suggests regarding pictures. Zeke heads to the couch, flops down, and puts his feet up on the coffee table.

“Zeke! Get your feet down!” Mom chastises, smacking Zeke’s legs.

“Child abuse!” Zeke calls out.

“You’re hardly a child anymore.” Mom insists.

I can’t help but laugh at Zeke and Mom. “Welcome to my crazy family.” I tell Casey, grinning.

Awww, he’s so cute when he’s embarrassed. Poor guy.

“Yeah, the fireplace sounds great.” I say, taking Casey’s arm and dragging him toward the fireplace. The sooner we take these pictures, the sooner we can be on our way. Yay!

Casey smiles awkwardly, relaxing a little. Mom starts arranging us for the pictures. She lied, of course. She DOES take a million pictures. Halfway through, Casey suddenly smacks his forehead.

“Shoot! I forgot the thing in the car!” he exclaims.

“I’ll get it!” Zeke volunteers, heading for the door.

“Don’t squash it!” Casey insists.

“I won’t squash it.” Zeke insists, then heads outside.

I grin, raising an eyebrow as I look at Casey. “The thing?” I repeat.

Gasp! Did he buy me a corsage?! That is so sweet! My first corsage from a boy that isn’t my brother! Eeeeeeeeeeeeee!

“Yeah, um, you’ll see.” Casey mumbles.

Zeke returns with a small plastic box. Yes! He DID buy me a corsage!

“Do girls really like these things?” Zeke asks, holding up the flowers. Casey practically attacks him to get the box away from him.

“Yes, we do.” I say, making a face at Zeke. “Are you taking notes, Zeke? You could learn a thing or two from Casey about gentlemanlike behavior.”

I glance at Mom, grinning brightly. Eh eh, didn’t I tell her I really love Casey?

“See, Casey’s like, a genius.” Zeke insists. “I didn’t know flowers had meanings and shit.”

“Language Zeke.” Mom cautions.

“Oops. Sorry.” Zeke says sheepishly.

“Okay, now that Zeke’s totally ruined the moment, let me explain.” Casey interjects as he opens up the box. He lifts out a lavender rose corsage. Eeeeee!

“Okay, it’s a lavender thornless rose.” he explains. “Lavender roses symbolize enchantment, thornless roses mean love at first sight. So I thought it was perfect for you, Morgaine.”

“Oh Casey, that’s so sweet.” Mom sighs.

“Oh my gosh.” I totally melt as I smile adoringly at Casey, feeling my eyes tear up. Noooooooo, I can’t cry! I’ll mess up my mascara!

I kiss his cheek and end up leaving a lipstick mark. Argh, see, this is why I don’t wear makeup on a regular basis. Now I’ve got to touch up my makeup.

“That is so sweet.” I echo Mom, sighing.

Sigh. I’m dating the most romantic guy on the planet.

“Here, let me pin it on.” he says, blinking rapidly himself as he fights to get the flowers attached to my dress. Mom’s snapping pictures like crazy.

“How do you know this stuff, Case?” Zeke asks.

“I read.” Casey mutters as he finally gets the corsage on.

“About things other than science, Zeke.” I say, sning ang a little as I grin at Casey.

I glance down at my corsage, feeling giddy. “It’s beautiful, Casey.”

I raise my head, looking at Mom. “Okay, Mom, we need to get going if we’re going to make it to the dance on time.”

“So we can be the only ones dancing, from my understanding.” Casey says with a smirk. “Maybe it’s a good thing you’re a bit late, Morgaine. Let someone else be the prettiest girl there for five minutes.”

Mom looks at Casey curiously, I think trying to figure out if he’s for real.

“Why am I going to this again?” Zeke muses.

“Because Miss Burke is going to be there, and despite your habit of sleeping with cheerleaders, you actually do like her.” Casey reminds him.

“Yeah, we need to break you of that habit, Zeke.” I say, grinning. “You’ve got better taste than that.”

I sigh, looking at Casey. Isn’t he the best?

“So what do you think, Mom?” I ask, grinning as I hook my arm around Casey’s.

“Casey, if it was anyone else, I’d think you were full of shit.” Mom says. Zeke blinks, then laughs.

“Language!” he calls out.

“Huh?” Casey mumbles, blinking. He rubs at his eye, adjusting his contact lens.

“Have a good time tonight.” Mom says. “Casey, if your mother asks, you stayed here.”

“Wha?” Casey grunts. Oh poor baby. He’s totally confused.

My face lights up and I smile brightly. YES!

“Thank you, Mom!” I say, giving her a hug and a kiss on the cheek. See? I always knew I had the coolest mom on the block.

Mom gives Zeke a hug too, then Casey. Casey’s confusion deepens noticeably.

“What just happened?” he asks on the way to the car.

“I think you just got my mother’s permission to bang her daughter.” I say, smirking. Shazam!

Zeke laughs.

“Your mom’s too cool, Morgaine.” he says.

“Come on! It’s not like that!” Casey protests weakly.

“Thanks, Zeke.” I say, grinning. I hug Casey. “I know that, babe. Mom knows that too. I told her about you declaring your love in the quad. She thinks you’re great, Casey. She’s showing that she trusts us.”

“Okay, as long as that’s clear.” Casey says as Zeke unlocks the car doors. “That just made it sound really. . .I don’t know, wrong.”

I smile, caressing Casey’s cheek. “Don’t worry. Mom knows that it’s more than just sex between us. She wouldn’t have said she’d covered for you otherwise.”

I kiss him softly, wrapping my arms around his neck.

“I love you.” he mumbles against my lips. Zeke gets into the car and revs the engine.

“Will you guys get a room!” he teases. “Whoops! I forgot! You’re ahead of me there, aintcha Case!”

“Zeke!” Casey exclaims. “That was supposed to be a surprise!”

I laugh. “I’ll justtendtend I didn’t hear that, okay?” I say. “I love you too, Casey.”

I get into the car, feeling pretty excited about the night in general, but especially about Casey’s surprise. I can’t wait to see what he has in store for me.
