Chapter Eleven
After Round Two
Ten more fell after our second attempt at a hunt. Five walked away with trophies and two were seriously injured, Beira among them.We were in groups again, Beira, myself and Tox making up one of them. We managed to track down a handful of hard meat but when we cornered them and got into a battle we stopped paying attention to each other. One of our prey's tail had been severed and they wittingly used it to slingshot acid at us, Tox and I managed to get out of the way but Beira had his back turned and his hands full. If I hadn't acted as quickly as I did, and if Tox hadn't defended us while I worked, Beira would have died.
He rested in the medical wing of the ship on his stomach. His back was being tended to by the ship medic. The burn wasn't very deep, if it wasn't for me it would have ate through his spine and at the very least paralyzed him.
"He's lucky you were there," the medic said but I could only nod. If I had warned him, said something, did something he wouldn't be on the table where he was.
"Go get some rest, I'll let you know when he's awake." Again I could only nod and left the room with a hung head. Beira and I had become close friends as we trained for our hunts. I managed to keep my distance enough to not become intimate but he still teased me every now and then to see if I would change my mind.
"How is he?" Tox asked as soon as I got back to our room. He looked more than concerned, even with his new trophy sitting on his lap.
"He'll recover," I said before plopping onto my bed.
"That's good, I know he's become a good friend," Tox said but I covered my face. If I was a good friend he wouldn't have been hurt.
"How's it coming?" I asked meaning the trophy. It looked like he was just finishing his polishing.
"Just about done with it, I brought yours and Beira's on board, too," he said and I glanced at him. I had killed at least one of the hard meats and Beira killed his just as the acid got flung at him but we didn't have time to pick them up.
"Thanks," I said but I didn't feel like cleaning it. I didn't feel like doing much of anything.
"Boedog," Tox said firmly and I glanced at him again. "It doesn't help to mope around, what's done is done, at least you managed to save his life." My comrade looked at me sternly, I knew he was right, the best thing I could do was focus on something productive.
"How do you think Tobias is holding up?" I asked randomly. I thought about him almost every waking moment, was he safe? Unharmed? Happy? Was Otic driving him mad? Was she even nice to him?
"I'm sure he's fine," Tox reassured me. "Now, go get your skull and start cleaning it."
It was a week before I was allowed to see Beira again, he needed to rest and I understood why. The medic explained that a good percentage of his back had been burned by the acid and it had burned deeper in some areas but nowhere critical."How are you feeling?" I asked my small comrade from the doorway.
"Better now that you're here," he said with a wink and I shook my head. "The medic says you saved me."
I nodded then stepped in. The smell of blood and cauterizing fluid made me wary but I put the feeling aside. "You passed out from the pain, had to carry you back with me," I said with a smile.
"Did we get any trophies?" he asked. I could tell he wasn't getting his hopes up but I nodded and he lit up.
"Tox managed to grab both of our kills and bring them back with us," I told him gently.
"That's good," Beira said and relaxed considerably. "Tell him thanks for me."
I nodded then sat on the side of his bed. He was lying on his side, probably still in pain.
"I'm sorry," was all I could think of to say. I never thought that any of us would get seriously injured let alone die as many of our other comrades had.
"For saving me?" Beira asked lightly. "I didn't think Tox disliked me that much." When I looked at him with my own sad eyes he winked then nudged me with his leg. "I should be thanking you, you pulled me out of that mess. The medic said it could have been much worse."
I nodded reminding myself all too well what I had already gone through. I played out every other scenario I could and in all of them Beira would have died or been seriously disabled.
"When the medic lets me go will you assist me?" Beira asked, suddenly serious. "It will be a while before I fully recover, I will need some help," he said then looked down. To anyone else his request would have been a sign of weakness but I saw it as a sign of strength. He at least had the courage to ask me for help because he knew he would need it. His recovery would probably go faster and better if I was there to help him.
"Of course I will assist you," I said and put my hand on his leg. "I will be there for you but don't think your recovery is going to be all 'pillows and service'," I said with my own wink.
"Looking forward to it." He smiled at me then adjusted himself. I knew he had to be tired so I let him be and went to go find Tox to tell him what I was planning on doing.
