~~~~~2008~~~~~
********** Aiden and I had been at the reception for forty-five minutes before I spotted Egon coming through the door. During that time I had told my son a few funny stories, like the time Egon had tried to create a power source strong enough for the death ray he wanted to build. He’d turned a jungle gym into a huge electromagnet with disastrous results. Instead of laughing, Aiden had been fascinated. Egon held the door open for Peter and Dana to make their grand entrance. It looked funny but sweet to see my brother holding a toddler. Everyone vied for the newlyweds’ attention, but Peter politely brushed them aside. He made his way toward Aiden and me. The rest of the Ghostbusters trailed behind them, and I could see Aiden was excited. We stood as they approached the table. I was doing my best to stay calm, and, when Peter smiled at me, relief flooded through me. "Hey, Kitten, long time no see." He greeted me. "Hi, Peter... congratulations." I smiled back at him. I wanted to hug him, but I didn’t want to push it. His eyes fell onto Aiden, and he raised his eyebrows at me. I blushed. "Who’s this tall drink of water?" He chuckled, obviously putting two and two together. "This is my son, Aiden. Aiden, this is your uncle, Dr. Peter Venkman." I introduced them. "This is so cool... Mom never told me she knew the Ghostbusters." Aiden gushed, shaking Peter’s hand. "Well, she was probably trying to protect you... I want you guys to meet my wife, Dana, and this is my stepson, Oscar... soon to be Venkman, once the formal adoption goes through." Peter introduced us, and Oscar made a grab for Aiden’s glasses. Aiden grinned at him and shook his tiny hand. "It’s great to meet you, Dana. Ray and Egon told me all about you." I told her. She shook my hand and smiled at Aiden. "We’ll have to get together for lunch soon and get to know each other." She offered. Ray finally pushed forward to meet Aiden. "Wow! It’s a pleasure to meet you, kid. I’m Ray Stantz, but you can call me Uncle Ray, if you’d like." Ray clapped him on the back. Aiden wore an ear to ear smile. The rest of the introductions were made, and everyone stared at Aiden. He, nor Egon, seemed to notice, which was typical for both of them. Pete pulled me slightly aside. "You and the egghead?" He tilted his head in Aiden’s direction. "Neither of them know." I admitted. "Well everyone else sure has it figured out." "I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it." I sighed. "Is he smart like Egon?" "Oh yeah. We’re in the process of enrolling him at Columbia full time. He’s ninety percent Egon and ten percent me." I told him. "I’m glad you’re here. It’s about time." Pete said, finally hugging me. I hugged him back, fighting tears. "I’m so sorry for everything, Peter, and I’m really happy for you." I told him. He patted my cheek. "Good luck crossing that bridge." He replied, before letting Dana and himself be whisked away. Everyone moved away, finally, until just Egon, Aiden and I stood by our table. They were engrossed in a conversation about street lights, so I went to the buffet table to get plates for the three of us. They talked as they ate, and I marveled at the similarities between them. How could Aiden have so many of the same eating habits as his father when he’d never even met him before today? Winston Zeddemore and his wife, Claire, were seated at the table with us, and they were just as surprised acting. I’d never met him, but I liked Winston immediately. You could tell he’d been raised right, and he was very practical. He told me about meeting the Ghostbusters for the first time, and he explained how he’d met his wife on a call. Claire Zeddemore worked at the 53rd Precinct of the NYPD. She was a records clerk there who’d stayed behind to try to protect the records when the walls had begun to bleed. When the dancing started, Aiden went off in search of a soda, and Winston and Claire headed for the dance floor. "Aiden is an exceptionally bright young man. Have you thought about letting me include him in my study?" Egon asked me. "So you like him?" I asked back. "Of course. He’s your son." Egon replied. It was a sweet statement coming from Egon. "Dance with me." I said, standing and tugging on his hand. He let me pull him up and onto the dance floor as ‘Let’s Stay Together’ by Al Green played.While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
