Chapter 10- “So, is there anything else you haven’t told me?” Leia asked a couple of days later. “Like what?” Luke replied, watching as Leia carefully applied her makeup. “I don’t know. Is there anything you know that you haven’t said a single thing about?” Leia said. ‘Yes, actually, there is,’ Luke thought. Instead he replied “No. Not that I can think of.” Luke and Leia heard an amused laugh from somewhere in the apartment. “I am not taking your place. But nice try.” “Please?” they heard Vader say. Leia rolled her eyes. “What’s going on?” Luke queried. “Vader is trying to get out of going tonight. Apparently he doesn’t like official Imperial functions.” Luke nodded. Changing the subject, he said “Why do you put that stuff on? You look beautiful without it.” “I told her the same thing.” Vader said, coming in to the room. “But some women don’t feel ‘put together’ unless they have hidden; sorry, accentuated their natural beauty.” “Since when do you know so much about women?” Leia asked. “Why haven’t you answered his question?” Vader returned, arching an eyebrow and looking at her. “I don’t have to answer him.” Leia answered. “So you’re leaving me? All alone?” Luke asked, in an effort to change the subject. “You won’t be completely alone.” Leia said. “Melendel will be here.” “Great.” Luke mumbled. “Oh no,” Vader said loudly in a theatrical voice. “I have nothing appropriate to wear.” “Shut up and grow up Anakin.” Melendel called back. “It can’t be that bad,” Leia said. “Yes, it can,” Vader said. “Why don’t you come with us?” Leia asked suddenly, looking at Luke. “I’m not sure that’s such a great idea,” Vader said before Luke could answer. “Why?” Leia asked. “Delicately put, there are going to be several people there who do not like him. And I’d rather not tempt the fates,” Vader explained. “Translation: Anakin is being cautious for once in his life and not putting someone in harm’s way.” Melendel said. Vader glared at his father. “No one invited you in on this conversation.” Looking at Leia he said, “We need to leave.” Leia nodded as she made one last adjustment to her hair. Vader left the room, leaving only she and Luke. Glancing at Luke, Leia asked “Will you be okay while we’re gone?” “Yes, Leia. I’m not a child.” “I know. But you don’t really know Melendel that well.” Luke gave a small shrug. “You look beautiful,” he said softly. Leia blushed and thanked him. Coming closer to him, she gave him a quick kiss. Before she could step back, Luke grabbed her arms and pulled her mouth back to his. Leia moaned quietly as they kissed. “Leia!” Vader called. Leia pulled away from Luke and called, “Coming!” Luke followed her out of the bedroom and in to the main room. “Lovely,” Melendel said with a smile as he looked at Leia. Leia returned the smile. “Thank you,” she said. “Have fun,” Melendel said as the two left. Vader threw his father an annoyed look just before the door slid closed. As they walked Vader said, “You do look beautiful.” “Is it okay for this type of gathering?” Leia asked. “Yes.” Vader answered. The two fell silent as they walked. Vader’s mind conjured up a beautiful woman in formal gowns, with an adoring smile on her face. Vader shoved the memories down. Taking her hand and linking her arm with his, Vader led her into the gathering. His eyes swept the room and saw an endless amount of politicians, bureaucrats and their respective aides. Several high ranking officers were in attendance as well. “Lord Vader,” a politician called. ‘Force kill me now.’ Vader thought. “Do you know how to cook?” Melendel asked, looking at Luke. “Mm-hmm.” “Would you like to make dinner?” “Sure. Although it won’t be the gourmet meal Father can make.” Melendel looked at Luke. “I hope you don’t call him that when he’s around.” “Why?” Luke asked, slightly confused. “He doesn’t like it. It’s too formal. And he doesn’t want a formal relationship with his child.” “So what should I call him?” Luke asked. “You’d have to ask him.” Luke worked on making dinner, with Melendel helping when he was needed. “Father said you kept him sane after my mother died,” Luke said after dinner. “What was wrong with him?” Melendel looked at Luke over the chess board. “When your mother died, it devastated him. He tried to carry on, but he couldn’t. Not in private anyway. He didn’t know what to do without her. At that point in time, he believed that it was his fault that she was dead. He went around thinking that he had killed both you and her. I tried everything I could think of to help him. But he didn’t have the heart for anything anymore. I actually think he buried his heart with her. He hid it from everyone, but he was a broken man. I once came home to find him in a pool of blood. It only hit me then how bleak the situation was. Never had I thought he would try to take his own life. I thought he was stronger than that. But I guess love does crazy things to people. Over the next few years, I tried to help him. And he fought back. It was an endless cycle. Sometimes he would listen to me, and other times he wouldn’t. I wasn’t sure how much longer his abused mind and emotions could go on. Then he learned you were alive. I’ve blessed that day ever since. He stopped acting like he would go off the deep end, and started to repair the galaxy. I’m not saying he’s completely better. Because he isn’t. More than likely, he never will be. But the day to day life isn’t such a struggle for him anymore.” “No one noticed that anything was wrong?” Luke asked. “Anakin hides things very well. In public, he acted like the terrifying Sith Lord he is. But when it was just he and I, he’d fall apart. He isn’t weak. He never has been. But he couldn’t stand life without her.” Luke nodded his understanding. The two spent the rest of the evening in silence. Melendel meditating and Luke processing the information that he had been told. A few hours later, Leia and Vader came back. “How did it go?” Melendel asked, looking at Vader. “Fantastic,” Vader answered sarcastically. Melendel looked at Leia. “Did you enjoy yourself?” “Yes. I got to meet people that I’ve never gotten to meet before. Can you excuse me though? These shoes are killing me.” Leia exited to the bedroom. Vader went into the kitchen for a glass of water. Melendel rose to follow him, and gestured for Luke to come along. “Anything happen?” Melendel asked. “Nothing riveting. Just talk of how ‘great the Empire is’ and what a ‘fabulous Emperor’ we have. I swear, every one of them was paid to say those things.” As Leia came in Melendel asked “Was Admiral Piett there?” “Yes, he was there,” Leia said. “At least he tried to hide how miserable he was.” Vader shot Leia a look. “You know,” Melendel said, “you could at least try to act interested. Especially since these people are supposed to support you one day.” “I don’t give a damn what they think. Politicians come and go. It’s the people one has to win over,” Vader returned sharply. “Anakin, I’m not trying to cause a fight here.” Vader raised an eyebrow, waiting for the point. “Perhaps we should discuss this later,” Melendel finished. “You’re awfully quiet,” Leia said looking at Luke. “Are you okay?” Luke raised his eyes from where he had been staring. Nodding once, he said “I’m listening.” “Right,” Leia said disbelievingly. “I’m exhausted,” Leia abruptly said. “Good night.” After Leia left, Vader looked at Luke and softly said, “Are you sure you’re alright?” Luke looked at his father. “Yes. I’m fine.” Vader looked at Luke, then at Melendel. “We have an incredibly important meeting tomorrow,” Melendel said. Vader absently nodded, still not convinced that Luke was alright. “Good night,” Melendel said. “Night,” Luke returned. Once Melendel was out of the room Vader moved and stood in front of Luke. Placing one finger under Luke’s chin, Vader tilted his face up. The two stared at one another for a moment. “What is it?” Vader asked. “Nothing,” Luke answered, trying to avoid his father’s all-seeing gaze. “Don’t lie to me. Something happened this evening. What was it?” Luke hesitated before he answered. “Melendel said you tried to kill yourself.” “And that bothers you?” Vader queried. “Why did you do it?” “Because I didn’t want to live without your mother,” Vader answered. “Do you wish you had succeeded?” “At first. Now I’m glad I didn’t. If I had succeeded, I never would have met you.” Luke’s eyes flew to Vader’s face. “I’m still getting used to that,” Luke said, with a small smile. “Does it bother you to hear it?” “What? That you love me? That you want me? No. It’s nice to hear.” “Good,” Vader said. “You’re going to be hearing it a lot.” Luke’s answering smile lit up the room. A/N: Did you like it? Want more?
