James stood in the hallway of their new home outside their bedchamber
with the doctor who had attended Aislinn. His arms were crossed and his eyes
were downcast as he listened to what the doctor had to say.
“How far along was she.” James asked solemnly.
“Four months maybe. Little less.” Norrington just starred downward
his eyes fixed on the spot they had been looking at, never moving.
“Why did this happen. Was it something . . . I did, something that she
ate, some sort of fever? What?”
“It’s hard to say. As it is right now, she didn’t even know she was
with child. She’s young, she’s strong, but she lost a lot of blood and
she’s going to need rest.” The doctor said keeping his voice down.
James nodded a bit, still in a little shock. The doctor started to turn
to walk away but Norrington stopped him, “Doctor.” The man turned and looked
at him, “You’ll keep this to yourself? You’ll not tell another soul?” He
said making sure.
“Of course not.” The surgeon said assuring him that he’d keep his
confidence.
Norrington walked into the bedroom to see Aislinn resting as the doctor
said she was. Her skin was pale grey, and she had deep black circles around her
eyes. She wasn’t looking well at all, her health had taken such a bad turn
with this incident. James closed the door carefully not wanting to disturb her,
then walked over taking a chair and placing it beside her bed. Aislinn opened
her eyes when he sat down next to her and took a breath.
He smiled at her, “Can’t make up your mind, hmm? Sea sickness when
we’re on a ship, land sickness when we’re on land. Honestly darling, I
don’t know where we’ll be able to live.” James said in a light tone, doing
his best to keep his own feelings hidden.
“Are you cross with me?” Her voice sounded dry, in a whisper. She
must have been thirsty, but the doctor said it was best she wait to eat or drink
until she had had some rest.
“No. No darling, this isn’t your fault.” He said reaching out
taking her hand. “Why would you think that I would be cross with you?”
Aislinn looked a little distressed and she bit her lip, “I made such a
fuss . . . about getting into the boat. I shouldn’t have. On your first day
here at your new post . . . I cause such a scene.” A tear escaped her eye.
“It seems in whatever I do, I always manage to find a way to embarrass you.”
Well. That decided it for him. It would definitely be best if she
didn’t know that she had miscarried their first child. Perhaps someday when
she was older and a bit more able to deal with the world in all it’s psychotic
glory he would tell her, but not right now. At the moment she was feeling guilty
about her refusal to step down a ladder into a smaller boat and passing out in
front of a colleague. Who knows what the physiological weight of knowing she had
lost their baby would do to her, regardless of faults.
“Darling . . .you’re ill. We can’t control when we become ill. I am
only thankful that we arrived today where there was proper help to be had. The
doctor said that you simply need a lot of rest, plenty of good food to eat, and
you’ll be back on your feet in no time at all.” He stood from where he sat
and leaned over kissing her softly. “So I suggest you take his instruction and
go to sleep. I’ll see that when you wake, supper will be awaiting you.” He
promised stroking her cheek.
Aislinn sat on their bed in silence waiting for James to come in for the
evening having been told by a servant that she was to wait and not retire as she
had been doing the past few weeks. She was patient and her fingers traced over
the words in her book as she read them and then turned the page continuing on.
Suddenly, she jumped finding that her book was slammed closed right in
front of her. Apparently she’d drifted off to sleep while reading it. Looking
up she saw James standing next to her and she sat up a little straighter trying
to make sure she was fully awake and alert. “Why have you been avoiding me?”
He demanded to know.
The young woman just starred at him at his abrupt question and looked
from left to right. “Avoiding you?” She questioned not sure she understood.
“Yes, avoiding! Every night when I return here I find the candles
doused and you asleep. Completely and utterly gone into the great beyond, no
matter how much noise I make you do not even stir. The other night, I know for a
fact that you were awake but still you refused to move or acknowledge my
presence and I want to know why!” He said tossing her book down on the table.
“I haven’t been avoiding you, James. I do try and wait up for you but
you come in so late.” She said trying to explain.
“Bollix! It isn’t just at night, you’ve been avoiding me during the
day!” Aislinn grew quiet and folded her hands on her lap. James noticed this
and arched a brow. “What.”
“James, please don’t get angry with me.” She said softly, “But .
. . I’m not the one whose been avoiding you.” She looked up at him,
“You’ve been avoiding me.” Norrington paused and looked at her.
“Pardon?” He said a little surprised.
She sighed, “It’s been that way every since we landed here. It’s as
though . . . as though you dread spending a moment with me. You take your meals
with me, then you disappear right after, you come in so late that it’s well
after when I can keep my eyes open to wait for you . . . and when I wake in the
morning you are already gone. If I come into a room, you may greet me, but you
quickly make an excuse as to why you must leave if I ask why you are going.”
Norrington listened to her as she talked realizing that she was right and
starting to feel sheepish that he had been blaming her for this. It was him who
was doing the avoiding. “James . . .” Aislinn said tears filling her eyes,
as it seems she had cried over this matter before even though she had tried so
hard not to. “What have I done to make you so angry with me? Are you afraid
that I’ll embarrass you again?”
The Admiral looked at the two young blue eyes that were pleading for
answers, only feeling even more like an idiot. “I’ve been a complete ass
haven’t I.” He finally said not knowing what else to say.
“What’s wrong?” She asked.
“I don’t know.” He said with a sigh sitting down beside her. “I
suppose that it’s just the new place . . . but it’s not really new, I’ve
been stationed here before. A lot of things happened here that I would prefer to
forget . . . and coming back here just dredged some of them up. Then of course
I’ve been working trying to get the fleet organized so that when I do take
them out on the first patrol half of them don’t end up in India and the other
half in London.” He looked at her, “Of course that is no reason to neglect
you and I’m sorry. I’ve no excuse for that.”
She nodded a little. “Alright then. I can understand that you’ve had
a lot on your mind, with all the work that has been going on.” She said with a
smile. James felt as though he was going to wither and die not being entirely
truthful with her like he just was. “I promise I’ll stay out of your way
until things get less hectic for you.” Leaning forward she place a soft kiss
on his cheek completely agreeable since it seemed that was what he wanted as she
slid back and crawled under the covers to go to bed.
The word IMBECILE kept flashing in Norrington’s brain. She was so
understanding and gentle, and trusting. And he took complete advantage of that
by unloading whatever he could reach for as an excuse for avoiding her as the
plague on those trusting ears of hers. That was simply not going to work.
“I guess it all depends on wither or not you want children Admiral.”
The doctor said looking at James. “There really isn’t any other way you’re
going to get them you know.” James shot the doctor an evil glare that silently
told him to ‘shut up’. The doctor sighed, “It was your decision not to
tell her what happened. But I’m sure she’s already noticed that any sort of
. . . after hours activities have come to a complete stop. That’s going to
have an affect on her.”
“She’s noticed. They have.” James said his arms crossed. “I
don’t want her to die . . . and according to you and what I saw with my own
eyes she came damn close. Do you have some sort of guarantee for me that it
won’t happen again?”
“Of course I don’t, no one does.” James rolled his eyes not wanting
that answer. “Look, Admiral, there were many factors to consider. Traveling by
ship is hard for everyone, particularly women. From the information you’ve
given me about her situation it would have been a bit more stressful for her as
she would have been more prone to fits of anxiety, stress, illness . . . a
number of things. That might have been the main cause of her loss. Next time
could be different. In all likely circumstances it will be.” Crossing his arms
the doctor leaned against his desk, “Then of course there are ways to prevent
pregnancy if you’re worried about such.”
“We’re married.” James said a little annoyed. “I’m not
subjecting her to those techniques, thank you very much.” He arched a brow,
“Besides, it isn’t that I don’t trust her but I’d rather not give her a
reason for me not to.”
“It seems that you’ve been having to teach her from day one yourself
about the habits of man and wife Admiral. If you simply change your lesson plan
now, you could hurt the poor girl.” The doctor said looking at him. James
shifted his eyes towards the doctor before looking away.
“No.” Aislinn said with her arms crossed and her brow furrowed. James
looked at her wide eyed at her outright refusal as she sat up leaning against
her pillows. Norrington just starred at her for a moment before she looked at
him and repeated herself again. “No!” She said smacking his hand away from
her arm and crossing her own tighter as she looked away.
“Aislinn! What on earth has gotten into you!” He exclaimed looking at
her at a loss for words. “I think this is something we’ve been over numerous
times in the past and I was certain that we had gotten over all of this. First
it was at home, then it was on the ship, then again when we landed at port, then
once more on the ship . . . dare I ask what the problem is now?”
“You are!” She exclaimed before throwing back the covers and getting
up from the bed.
“Where are you going?” He asked quickly as she snagged her robe
disappearing out of the room slamming their bedroom door behind her.
“Aislinn!” he called after her not certain what was going on.
Getting up himself he came down the stairs of their home looking about
finding some noise coming from the dinning room. James hurried in that direction
and opened the door to find Aislinn pacing the floor rather upset. “What in
God’s name is the matter?!” He asked a bit upset himself at the way she was
acting. “I think I’m entitled to some explanation.”
Suddenly he found himself dodging out of the way of a vase that came
flying at his head. Needless to say the Admiral was shocked and caught off guard
looking between the busted vase and the enraged young woman. “You aren’t
entitled to anything!” She yelled. Norrington took a step towards her only to
have her reach for another object. Instantly he was on his toes ready to dodge
the next attack and so was Aislinn, ready to make better aim for her target if
he should move out of her way. “You’ll not touch me again, James Norrington
until I decide I want to be touched. You may be my lord, and my master, but my
body is my own, and I shall decide who touches me and when!” She screamed
throwing the object she held in her hand reaching for another and throwing that
as well.
James couldn’t believe this, he had no idea what had gotten into her or
why. It was like being caught in the crossfire of a battle without your weapons,
and there were far to many near misses for comfort. Finally, it seemed she had
run out of things to throw and it was his chance. The table between them she
started to bolt one way and he was ready to go after her, then she started to go
the other and he stayed on guard.
At last she made her decision and she made a run for the door. However
James made his move and jumped over the chair that was in the way wrapping his
arm around her and knocking her to the floor before she found something else
that could be used as a weapon. She kicked, and scratched and bit at whatever
she could. It was like trying to hold onto a rabid wolverine. James turned her
over straddling her stomach trying to keep his eyes from being clawed out and
grabbed her wrists, pinning her to the floor. “Aislinn . . .Aislinn! Stop it!
STOP!” He yelled.
She struggled a bit more but he kept her held down pushing her back flat
on the floor to the point it was uncomfortable for her to move or to resist in
anyway and was just better if she surrendered. He frowned looking at her.
“What is the matter with you?!” He questioned. “What brought this on!! You
were just fine on the ship, except for becoming ill . . . have you gone mad?”
Tears filled her eyes as she looked up at him, “You blamed me!!” She
cried. “You blamed me, for avoiding you, you said it was me who was avoiding
you!” Norrington remembered that conversation it wasn’t that long ago.
“I know I did, and it was wrong. I apologized. You were right, I was
the one who was avoiding you. But I want to make it up to you, Aislinn. That’s
what I was trying to do when you turned me away tonight. I wanted to try and
make up for the time I foolishly wasted neglecting you.”
“She said you would!! She said that you would, that all husbands do
because they feel guilty.” Tears were streaming down her face now. Norrington
arched a brow at this. “I didn’t want to believe her, I told her that you
were just busy with work . . . with the fleet . . . but you did just as she said
she would! She was right!! . . . she was right!”
The next day, at the home of an older woman, the door kicked in breaking
the latch off and splintering the wood. The woman who lived there stood up
having been drinking some tea and reading a book. The Admiral stormed in angrily
and looked about seeing her in her sitting room.
“James! What in heaven’s name are you doing! How dare you break in my
door like some barbarian!” She said completely insulted and caught off guard
by his intrusion. James was hardly impressed or remorseful about his actions and
walked over to the woman grabbing her by the arm. He nearly dragged her over to
where her coat was and took it from the rack handing it to her as he took her
out the front door. “What on earth . . . where are you taking me!”
“You know . . . I thought to myself, ‘who in all of Port Royal would
want more then anything to see me swinging by the neck from my own marriage
bed’, then I thought . . . ‘I’ll pay my old friend Marguerite, the black
widow, a visit’.” The woman looked a bit embarrassed.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” She said gathering her
skirts slightly so her feet wouldn’t get tangled in them as she tried to keep
Norrington’s pace. He jerked her arm up slightly to let her know she wasn’t
fooling him.
“Be proud of yourself you miserable wretch, you poured enough poison in
a young innocent girls ear that she was in hysterics feeling as worthless as you
are.” He said turning the corner on the street to the next. “But I assure
you, you are going to correct that mistake, this moment. Then you are going to
keep your distance from my wife for the rest of your sad little life or I shall
have you deported, by way of cannonade.” He paused outside his front door
looking at Marguerite. “Am I clear?”
The woman looked at him like a bird whose feathers had just been severely
ruffed as she straightened her dress and gave a nod. “Good.” James said as
he turned and opened the doors to his house pushing the woman inside and then
closing the doors behind.
“Just was is it you expect me to do here, James?” The woman asked
still irritated that she had been dragged through the streets like some sort of
criminal.
“You managed to talk it up nicely so that things would fall into place
to make it seem as though I were having relations with every woman in port royal
except her . . . You have a lot of damage to answer for . . .explain, and
attempt to undo. You’d better convince us both, otherwise you’ll only find
yourself having wished for deportation.”
“What about us? Hmmm? Should I lie to her and tell her that you and I
never had ‘relations’ when you were stationed here before you returned to
London?” She asked narrowing her eyes.
Norrington half smiled, “You haven’t told her that yet . . . you’ll
find that Aislinn is quite open with me about many things. Withholding
information and lying are two entirely different things.” He stepped closer,
“Don’t make it your goal in life to hurt her at every possible turn, or I
shall make a similar goal in mine to hurt you.” He warned.
